The prominent family of Dutchess County New York held strong ties to the local horse community especially in Millbrook and Washington Hollow. They were well known for their large estates. Footage captures iconic images of 1930s Florida as they tour Miami beach, witness gator wrestler’s prying the gator’s jaws open, catch fish on a chartered fishing expedition, pick citrus fruits from the vine, attend a horse race at the famous Hialeah Race Track and watch the Sikorsky S-42 Clipper take off. It highlights family life, recreation and fashion among the wealthy in the 1930’s. The era saw Florida in a recovery period from economic hardships brought on by the Great Depression. Revenue was returning to the state through the legalization of gambling on sports as well as tourism. It opens with family members at home riding horses (:09). It transitions to the Florida trip as family members pose with what might be Seminole native youth in tribal attire near thatched roof dwellings (13:07). A gator wrestler pries the animal’s mouth open (:31). Fowey Rocks Lighthouse appears situated seven miles off the coast of Cape Florida on Key Biscayne (:42). Fowey; completed in 1878, replaced for the Cape Florida Light. It remains in place as a marker for the entrance to the Hawk Channel Passage into the Florida Keys. Hialeah is a historic track and oldest existing recreational facility of Southern Florida renowned for it’s architecture style. It is a National Historic Landmark. Jockey and horse round the track (9:42). Sunbathers (10:00) and native women follow on the beach (10:15). Another gator wrestler puts the animal on it’s back (10:46). A fish stuck on a hook streams through the water towards the chartered fishing boat (10:57). A boat similar to the common Farley boat (11:29) and a large passenger steam boat follow (11:35). A fisher holds up a large swordfish (11:38). The group shows of a variety of fish catches (11:49). In a citrus grove, they pluck fruit from the vine (12:18). The conclusion returns to the family’s home (13:14) featuring a woman on a stoop and a boy in tall riding boots petting two dogs (13:24). De passage ligt op ongeveer 200 meter van de oude Minervapassage en moet zorgen voor meer ruimte en een betere doorstroming van reizigers. Ook is er plek voor 2000 fietsen, een werkende roltrap en een brede stationshal. Een grote verbetering volgens reizigers die we spreken. "Het is echt heel erg anders, ik herken het bijna niet meer". Volgens een ander is het 'ontzettend mooi'. Reizigers merken vooral dat de nieuwe passage ruimer en lichter is. "In de vorige passage liepen de trappen soms helemaal vol met mensen. Hier heb je meer ruimte om sneller en makkelijker bij de treinen en metro te komen", vertelt Emiel Vergouw, technisch manager van het project. De opening betekent niet dat de verbouwing van station Zuid erop zit. De oude Minervapassage is inmiddels afgesloten en wordt de komende vier jaar verbreed. De passage moet uiteindelijk twee keer zo breed worden als de nieuwe Brittenpassage. Ook wordt rekening gehouden met de aanleg van een derde perron. De verbouwing van station Zuid maakt deel uit van het grotere project Zuidasdok. Daarbij wordt de A10 Zuid verbreed van drie naar zes rijstroken per richting. Die komen in twee tunnels te liggen. Boven de tunnels komt ruimte voor extra trein- en metrosporen en wordt station Zuid verder uitgebreid. Voor het tweede deel van het Zuidasdok is nog altijd niet genoeg geld beschikbaar. Het Rijk heeft inmiddels 400 miljoen euro toegezegd, maar daarmee blijft een tekort van ongeveer 700 miljoen euro over. Dat bedrag is nodig voor de Zuidtunnel. Voor de Noordtunnel is nog geen geld gereserveerd. Wanneer het volledige project klaar is, is nog niet duidelijk. Ook voor wethouder Elise Moeskops van Mobiliteit: "Hoe het precies gaat lopen qua planning, vind ik nog best lastig om te zeggen. Daar zit nog flink wat rekenwerk in". Bij een brand in een stomerij zijn 164 handgemaakte pietenkostuums, die in Amsterdam bij de intocht worden gebruikt, verloren gegaan. Je zou het als onderwerp voor het Sinterklaasjournaal kunnen gebruiken, maar dit is afgelopen zomer echt gebeurd. Stichting Sinterklaas is daarna heel druk bezig geweest om ervoor te zorgen dat elke piet weer een pak heeft bij de intocht, en dat is gelukt. De pakken gingen afgelopen juli in rook op bij een brand bij een stomerij in Nieuw-Vennep. Voor Stichting Sinterklaas was dat natuurlijk een behoorlijke aderlating. "Een pak kost al snel 300 euro en we hebben daarbij helaas niet alles terug kunnen krijgen van de verzekering. Naast de financiële schade is het een hoop regelwerk wat ons als vrijwilligers flink wat taken gaat kosten", vertelt Mark Sedney van organisator Stichting Sinterklaas. Dat regelwerk wordt volgens Mark voldoende uitgevoerd. "We hebben gelukkig heel veel nieuwe pakken kunnen realiseren en daar zijn we blij mee. Mede dankzij donaties." De vorige pakken waren handgemaakt, vertelt Sedney. Zo waren er Amsterdamse elementen te zien op de pakken: ‘’We hadden andreaskruizen gemaakt op de pakken om het een Amsterdamse identiteit te geven. De pakken van nu hebben dat helaas niet, desalniettemin zijn het nog steeds kwalitatieve pakken.’’ Vandaag over twee weken is de intocht van Sinterklaas in Amsterdam, maar zorgen over de andere pakken zijn er niet. ’De pakken verschillen maar minimaal, dus de kinderen zullen een net zo leuk feest beleven." De intocht zal traditiegetrouw ook live te zien zijn op AT5. Het is misschien wel het belangrijkste moment voor Amsterdam in de 19e eeuw, de opening van het Noordzeekanaal. Dat gebeurde vandaag precies 150 jaar geleden en veranderde de stad, die op dat moment compleet op zijn gat lag, voorgoed. In 1876 zit de stad namelijk op een economisch dieptepunt. De statige grachtenpanden uit de 17e eeuw zijn inmiddels een herinnering aan een vervlogen tijd. De gemeente heeft een permanent geldtekort, de stad ligt er slecht bij en de haven is compleet vervallen. Dat laatste is een probleem: met lukt de grote schepen niet om bij de stad te komen vanwege een dichtslibbend IJ. Bovendien wordt de vaarroute die schepen vanaf de Noordzee moeten nemen om in de buurt van de stad te komen steeds ingewikkelder. Dat gebeurt dan nog via de Zuiderzee, dat vanwege ondiepe plekken (zoals de beruchte zandbak in het water voor Pampus) en onvoorspelbare weersomstandigheden geen aantrekkelijke route is. Steeds vaker wijken schepen daarom uit naar andere steden die beter te bereiken zijn. Een voorbeeld daarvan is Rotterdam, dat Amsterdam dreigt in te halen als economische grootmacht. De gevolgen van een wegkwijnende economie hebben dan als een plaag hun sporen achtergelaten. De werkloosheid is hoog, mensen trekken weg uit de stad en de armoede onder de bevolking is groot. "Het is droevig om te zeggen, maar de stad was totaal ingestort", vertelt Koen Kleijn, hoofdredacteur van geschiedenisblad Ons Amsterdam. "Binnen de Joodse gemeenschap moet de helft bedelen om rond te komen. Van alle kinderen in de Jordaan wordt de helft niet ouder dan vijf." "Gebeurde daar iets tegen? Nee, want het gemeentebestuur vond dat niet zijn taak. Dat soort zaken werd toen nog aan particulieren overgelaten." "Op een gegeven moment liep Amsterdam echt een halve eeuw achter", zegt Kleijn. "In veel andere steden had je al de mogelijkheid om scheepvracht op treinen over te zetten. Hier kon dat nog helemaal niet." Wat niet meehielp was dat het pas aangelegde Noordhollandsch Kanaal (Amsterdam-Den Helder) al na een paar decennia niet meer leek te voldoen aan de eisen van de moderne tijd. Schepen werden steeds groter en het was onvermijdelijk dat ze te ooit té groot zouden zijn om erdoorheen te kunnen varen. Loodzware klus Dat er dus een kanaal in de richting van IJmuiden gegraven zou worden leek dus voor de hand te liggen, maar dat was volgens Kleijn in die tijd niet het geval. Er moest namelijk iemand gevonden worden die het zou betalen. Dat was dus in ieder geval niet de overheid, maar ook het zakenleven stond niet te springen om te investeren. "Hoewel er veel armoede was, zat er bij een aantal families nog veel kapitaal waarmee dat soort ondernemingen gefinancierd hadden kunnen worden. "Maar veel van die ondernemers zaten op hun kussentje. Ze waren niet voor zulke investeringen te porren, ook omdat ze uit waren op rendement. En het rendement dat ze werd voorgespiegeld, vonden ze te laag. De initiatiefnemers hebben enorm moeten leuren om investeerders te vinden. Nederland wilde niet dat er vanuit het buitenland geïnvesteerd zou worden, maar dat is uiteindelijk wel gebeurd." "Zonder het Noordzeekanaal waren we nu een soort Venetië geweest. Dan waren er allerlei grote infrastructuurwerken niet geweest" Koen Kleijn, hoofdredacteur Ons Amsterdam Want het is uiteindelijk een Engelse makelaar die betaalt voor de graafwerkzaamheden. Een loodzware klus die onder slechte werkomstandigheden volbracht moest worden. Duizenden arbeiders uit Nederland en Engeland graven het kanaal met spades uit. Ze slapen in kuilen, afgedekt met takken, klei en veen. Na tien jaar is het graven klaar en gaat het kanaal open. Het verandert veel voor de stad: er wordt weer geld verdiend en mensen kunnen weer aan het werk. Daardoor neemt ook de bevolking van de stad toe. En het stadsgezicht verandert. Er komen drie grote kunstmatige eilanden in het IJ, met op één van die drie het Centraal Station. Ook verrijzen er grote pakhuizen op de Oostelijke Handelskade. Dat het kanaal er uiteindelijk zou komen, is volgens Kleijn geen vanzelfsprekendheid. "Er zijn ook voorbeelden van steden die uiteindelijk niets hebben gedaan met hun haven. Dat gebeurde bijvoorbeeld met de haven van Zeebrugge. Daardoor stierf het achterland uit en viel een stad als Brugge in slaap." "Het is een grote omslag geweest", zegt Kleijn. "Amsterdam werd hierdoor een moderne havenstad. Door de bereikbaarheid van de stad en de verbinding met het Centraal Station konden mensen eindelijk echt zaken doen als ze met hun schip de stad in kwamen. Explore Greenwich's Royal Observatory and the feud that led Flamsteed to burn his star catalogue. From the Meridian Line to Tudor palaces, this is where time began. In this Crown and Country journey across Greenwich, we step inside the country's oldest scientific institution, the Royal Observatory founded by Charles II to solve longitude as Britain rose as a maritime power. Sir Christopher Wren, astronomer-architect, built it for under £500 and set the site for the Meridian Line. First Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed spent 43 years observing from a simple shed, lying on a mattress beneath an opening roof to chart the heavens. His perfectionism ignited a clash with Sir Isaac Newton; with Edmund Halley and a royal warrant, Newton seized the data and published 400 volumes. Flamsteed bought 300 and burned them before his widow issued a corrected edition. Beyond the hilltop, Greenwich Park holds Saxon burial mounds and descendants of deer introduced for the royal hunt in 1515. Henry VIII staged tilts, wrestling and swordplay here, and crossed a bridge long claimed to be London's oldest to nearby Eltham, where he spent much of his youth. Eltham Palace began as a bishop's residence, expanded by Edward IV with its Great Hall, and later declined after the Civil War when regicide Nathaniel Rich stripped its fabric. In 1934, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld created a striking Art Deco home alongside the medieval hall, fusing modern design with royal heritage. Blackheath, named for what lies beneath the soil rather than the Black Death, was both a stage for royal pageantry and rebellion. In 1497 the Cornish marched under Michael Joseph and were crushed here, echoing earlier unrest led by Jack Cade. St Alfege Church, Hawksmoor's first and the earliest under Queen Anne's 1712 Act, anchors the town where the Saxon church once stood. On the riverfront, Wren's Royal Hospital for Seamen frames a clear view from the Queen's House, the Inigo Jones masterpiece that straddled the old road between Deptford and Woolwich and hosted George I's first reception in 1714. Later dramas included Caroline of Brunswick's ill-fated arrival to wed the Prince of Wales, her Montague House scandals and the Delicate Investigation of 1806. At Ranger's House she and her mother Augusta revived royal residence in Greenwich, followed by young Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, drilled in solitary study and war games. Greenwich Fair drew 250,000 revelers for Richardson's theatre and the notorious, often dangerous, hand-in-hand races down the park's steep slopes. Om dat te voorkomen probeert het familiebedrijf Gassan de jonge generatie warm te maken voor het klassieke ambacht. "Diamanten zijn net mensen, je moet ze allemaal anders benaderen." Raymond Vorm (41) werkte jarenlang als stratenmaker en was het werken in weer en wind zat. Een familielid wees hem op de vacature voor leerling diamantslijper. Hij was meteen verkocht. "Het is een prachtig, complex én technisch vak", vertelt hij enthousiast. Geconcentreerd kijkt hij na elke seconde slijpen naar het resultaat door een loep. "Het vraagt veel geduld, het slijpen van een diamant kan dagen duren." In Nederland zijn nog maar 30 ervaren diamantslijpers werkzaam. Dat was vroeger wel anders. In de hal waar Vorm met vier medeleerlingen onder toeziend oog van zijn leermeester Pieter Ouwerkerk (57) een diamant slijpt, zat vroeger de hele ruimte bomvol met ambachtslieden. Nieuwe leerlingen nodig Ouwerkerk: "Het beroep is minder bekend dan vroeger, toen ik begon. En er is heel veel massaproductie in China en India. Ter ere van het 21-jarig bestaan daarvan organiseerden ze een evenement om kennis te maken met het ambacht. Onze stagiaire Moïs mocht zelfs haar eigen diamant slijpen. Na wat getril, gegiebel en natuurlijk opperste concentratie lukte het haar om welgeteld één heel facet bij te slijpen. Om het vakmanschap door te geven aan volgende generaties, bieden ze interne opleidingen tot diamantslijper aan. Er zijn de laatste jaren veel boeken over geschreven, zoals de romans van Édouard Louis en Didier Eribon, of Ron Meyers De Onmisbaren en Tim ‘s Jongers’ Armoede uitgelegd aan mensen met geld. Één ding hebben die boeken gemeen: ze zijn geschreven door klassemigranten, mensen die in een arbeidersmilieu geboren zijn en zich binnen hebben gevochten in de elite. Ergens hadden ze allemaal hetzelfde effect: de hogeropgeleide bovenklasse de schellen van de ogen rukken. Doe niet alsof klasse niet bestaat. Maar het boek Klasse van de Duitse filosoof Hanno Sauer is onvergelijkbaar met die anderen. Al was het maar omdat Sauer absoluut niet uit de arbeidersklasse afkomstig is. Bij hem thuis ging het aan tafel niet over de gasrekening, maar over hoe je omgaat met lastige huurders. Sauer is een prikkelende, licht provocerende denker, die probeert te ontrafelen hoe sociale klasse ontstaat en zichzelf al duizenden jaren handhaaft, ondanks een inherent menselijke behoefte aan gelijkheid. Zijn vraag: als politici al decennialang meer gelijkheid beloven, hoe komt het dat sociale verschillen hardnekkig blijven bestaan? Zijn conclusie: ongelijkheid zit niet alleen in geld, maar vooral in status. En daar hebben politici geen macht. Geld herverdelen lukt nog wel: we innen 10 euro belasting op de één en geven de ander 10 euro subsidie. Maar status kun je niet herverdelen. Het is zoiets als coolheid, stelt Sauer: je kunt er niet meer van maken en het over iedereen verdelen. De elite zal altijd manieren zoeken om zich te onderscheiden van Jan met de pet. Klassenverschillen schuilen in subtiele signalen via kleding, taal en hoe we naar anderen kijken. Een slordig pak zegt meer dan een peperduur horloge. Als je erop gaat letten, spreken de slechte, vuile orcs in Lord of the Rings met een dik arbeidersaccent en de pure elfen zwaar bekakt. En een walgelijke foto in een museum kan zomaar een test zijn: snap jij waarom dit kunst is, of hoor je er niet bij? Sauer laat zien hoe we voortdurend onderscheid maken, zelfs (of misschien júíst) de mensen die gelijkheid zo belangrijk vinden. De kracht van zijn idee is dat hij die impliciete blik glashard expliciet maakt. Als je het eenmaal ziet, neem je het mee in iedere observatie, op straat, op je werk en in de supermarkt. *Over Hanno Sauer* Hanno Sauer is universitair hoofddocent filosofie en doceert ethiek, meta-ethiek en politieke filosofie aan de Universiteit Utrecht.
