Bij een ontvoering zijn gisteravond twee inzittenden van een auto aangehouden vlak bij het Flevoparkbad in Oost. Het gaat om twee 24- en 35-jarige mannen uit Rotterdam. Bij de aanhouding Werden ook waarschuwingsschoten gelost. In de auto werd het slachtoffer zonder verwondingen aangetroffen. De ontvoering begon eerder die avond op de Burgemeester van Leeuwenlaan in Nieuw-West. Na de melding van een mogelijke ontvoering rukte de politie rond 22.00 uur met veel materieel uit. Dat leidde tot een achtervolging die onder meer over de Insulindeweg ging en eindigde bij het Flevoparkbad. Daar werden waarschuwingsschoten gelost, waarna de inzittenden uit de auto komen. Ook de ontvoerde zat in de auto. AT5 ontving rond 22.20 uur tips over tientallen politieauto's die met sirenes door de straten reden. Ook zijn er een politiehelikopter en een drone ingezet boven het gebied. Op beelden is te zien dat de straat deels is afgezet en dat er een auto op de nabijgelegen tramrails staat. Hoe die daar terecht is gekomen, is niet duidelijk. Rond het Flevoparkbad deden de agenten onderzoek, onder meer in de bosjes. Daarbij lijkt ook mogelijk bewijsmateriaal te zijn veiliggesteld. Politieachtervolging door Oud-West Eerder op de avond was er ook een politieachtervolging, door Oud-West. The three men, including Salgado Araujo's younger brother Victor, are now being detained by ICE and threatened with deportation. "There is a Trump militia roaming our streets, our towns, our cities, killing people regardless of immigration status with absolutely no accountability. … They are either not getting training or getting training to shoot directly at people, to murder people, in the streets," says Congressmember Pramila Jayapal, explaining that the three incarcerated witnesses must be protected from deportation for at least as long as they can provide information for the investigations on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's killing. Victor Salgado Araujo "wants to be accessible as a witness, and it's really hard for him to do that when he's [being detained] 45 minutes away from Houston," says his attorney Ruby Powers. Het al vele jaren gekraakte pand op Van der Madeweg moet aanstaande vrijdag leeg zijn. Het gebouw zal verbouwd worden tot een studentenhotel. De krakers zeggen op het afgesproken tijdstip te vertrekken en zijn druk met schoonmaken. Een van hen laat AT5 zien hoe het pand er van binnen uitziet. Het pand staat op huisnummer 41 en staat al zeker sinds 2014, en waarschijnlijk langer, leeg. Volgens een van de krakers zitten er al meer dan tien jaar een paar krakers in en wisselde de samenstelling van de groep. Hij legt uit dat er voorzorgsmaatregelen zijn genomen tegen indringers. "Dit is een deur waar een boobytrap zit", laat de kraker zien. Het gaat om een paar touwen met een stalen balkje dat geluid moet maken bij het openen van de deur, waardoor krakers zich op tijd kunnen verstoppen als ze dat horen. Overlast voor de omgeving was er afgelopen jaren wel. Op 22 mei van dit jaar moesten de politie en brandweer bijvoorbeeld uitrukken voor een brand in het pand. Volgens de kraker had een andere kraker brand gesticht omdat de groep het gevoel had dat ze niet gewaardeerd werden door pauzerende werknemers van bedrijven in de buurt. "We werden met de nek aangekeken." Lang niet alle voorbijgangers weten dat het pand gekraakt is, maar sommige fietsers wel. "Als ik er langsfiets dan is het altijd verpauperd, altijd weer andere mensen. Die daar slapen. En daar troep maken. En het staat al heel lang leeg." Een anonieme tipgever liet begin deze week aan AT5 weten dat er in het nabijgelegen pand van Ambulance Amsterdam al jaren geluidsoverlast wordt ervaren en dat er veel troep ligt. "De gemeente doet niks. Overlast van dakloze ogende mensen, geluidsoverlast, veel bende." "We maken het bezemschoon voor de eigenaar" Kraker Inmiddels zijn bouwvakkers, terwijl de krakers nog binnen opruimen, bezig met het dichttimmeren van de openingen waar vroeger de ramen zaten op de begane grond. Ze houden daarbij contact met de krakers, die zeggen dat ze vrijdag netjes vertrekken. "We maken het bezemschoon voor de eigenaar." Moderne kamers Veel voorbijgangers die het pand kennen zijn blij dat het studentenhotel, dat straks 188 'moderne en volledig ingerichte' kamers moet tellen, er nu definitief lijkt te komen. "Er zijn hier alleen maar bedrijven natuurlijk", zegt een fietser. "Om vijf of zes uur gaat het dicht. En dan is het doodstil hier." In most of the United States, apartment buildings taller than three stories generally need two separate exit stairs. But architects, housing advocates, and lawmakers argue that this rule has also made many small apartment buildings difficult—or financially impossible—to construct. The alternative is known as a point access block: an apartment building organized around one central stair and elevator core. Removing the second staircase can eliminate long interior corridors, make narrow infill sites easier to develop, and allow apartments to have windows on multiple sides. That can mean more daylight, better ventilation, and more practical three- and four-bedroom homes. Critics see something more dangerous: the return of single-stair tenements and buildings with no backup escape route during a fire. In this video, we examine how a staircase can shape an entire neighborhood. We compare Lincoln Park in Chicago, where older courtyard buildings and walk-up apartments became difficult to replace, with Capitol Hill in Seattle, where the building code has allowed single-stair residential buildings as tall as six stories under specific safety conditions. But this video is not really just about stairs. It is about how zoning laws, parking requirements, permitting systems, and building codes quietly determine which kinds of homes are possible. When cities make small apartment buildings illegal or uneconomical, development does not stop. It becomes concentrated into fewer, larger, and often more expensive options.
