How could Shakespeare have possibly allowed his sonnets -- personal, sexual, and often scandalous -- to be published? I advance my own theory to account for the printing of the most shocking book of poetry in the history of literature, and discuss the possibilities as to the identities of the alluring Young Man and Dark Lady. Finally, we consider the light that the Sonnets shed upon Shakespeare's plays, particularly his obsession with gender ambiguity and androgyny. The US Senate overwhelmingly approved new legislation on Wednesday that could lead to Chinese companies such as Alibaba Group and Baidu possibly being delisted from U.S. stock exchanges amid increasingly tense relations between the world’s two largest economies. The bill was approved by unanimous consent in the US Senate and would require companies to certify that they are not under the control of a foreign government. It would require that foreign companies listed on a US exchange be audited by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. If a company can’t show that it is not under government control or the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board isn’t able to audit the company for three consecutive years, the company’s securities would be removed from US exchanges. Corporate Finance Book: https://amzn.to/2WT5Jw7 Visit our website: www.onfinance.org Follow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyle The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board or PCAOB is a little-known agency, created by the Sarbanes–Oxley Act in 2002 to oversee the audits of public companies and other securities issuers. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act required that auditors of U.S. public companies be subject to external and independent oversight for the first time in history. Previously, the profession was self-regulated. This all came about in response to the Enron accounting scandal in 2001 which brought down Arthur Andersen after it was found guilty of crimes in the firm's auditing of Enron. The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act, is not yet law. For this to become law, it has to be voted on by the House of Representatives and then sent to the President of the United States who can choose whether or not to sign the bill. If the President signs the bill, it becomes a law. Why is this an issue all of a sudden? There have been a number of scandals in the last short while which have raised questions about the state of Chinese accounting practices, and whether stock exchanges are doing enough to protect investors from fraud and scandal. The most notable story has been the fall of Luckin Coffee, which announced that it may have overstated sales by hundreds of millions of dollars. Nasdaq has since sent a notice to Luckin Coffee that it intends to delist the company’s ADR shares from the exchange. Around the world the models of corporate governance differ according to the variety of capitalism in the countries in which firms are incorporated. The Anglo-American model emphasizes the interests of shareholders. The multi-stakeholder model associated with Continental Europe and Japan also recognizes the interests of workers, managers, suppliers, customers, and the community. Corporate governance is of great importance economically. It is the reason that investors have faith in the capital markets and are willing to invest their savings in projects and businesses that provide jobs, economic growth, and products to the marketplace. I have a chapter in my Corporate Finance book, on corporate governance which goes through the various laws and listing requirements, particularly in the United States. There has been a general trend towards better corporate governance around the world – a trend which started after the 1929 stock market crash. In recent years, a lot of Silicon Valley companies have bucked that trend. Facebook went public a few years ago with a multiple share class structure. This enabled Founder shares to maintain 10 times the voting rights of common shareholders. Shortly after that Snap went public issuing only non-voting shares to the public. Former president Donald Trump last year issued an order banning investments in companies that the Pentagon had put on a list of groups with suspected links to the People’s Liberation Army. Companies can look around the world to find exchanges to list on, but no regulatory regime or exchange wants to be recognized as the place where companies with questionable corporate governance and accounting irregularities look to when raising capital. Some political analysts are saying that investors should “expect swift passage” of the bill “likely before the end of the month” “From there, it will go to President Trump’s desk, where he will sign it into law, likely within the next few weeks.”

What do Shakespeare's sonnets actually say? What can they tell us about the life or character of the man who penned them? Not only romantic and philosophical, the sonnets are erotic, desperate, and often angry, laced with shocking sexual imagery and emotional confession; as a group, they break all conventions of Elizabethan poetry, and trace the ghostly outline of two passionate affairs -- one a brief, tawdry fling with a mature voluptuous woman, and one a long, fraught relationship with an androgynous young man. This will be followed by a discussion of the publication of the sonnets, the possible identities of the "Dark Lady" and "Fair Youth," and their relation to the plays; and then by a discussion for patrons only of the "authorship controversy." Will The US Oil Fund Be Shut Down By Their Broker? In todays video we will discuss whether USO will have to liquidate their holdings after running into issues with their brokers. Some history on this topic. Oil prices went negative for a few hours the day before the expiration of the may oil futures contract last April. I posted a video explaining that issue. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfqmjSOD7pQ The USO is an ETF that invests in oil futures. They had rolled their futures, so were uninvolved with the negative price issue, but… People realized the USO could possibly go negative and there were no systems in place to deal with an ETF having a negative price, in addition the fund AUM ballooned and USO no longer had sufficient authorized shares allowing its price to drift from NAV. I made a video on that topic too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIqIjbHeV-g The make up of the ETF was then changed, so it was then tracking longer dated contracts, minimizing the impact of the roll and reducing the risk that the ETF could have a negative NAV. This is not great for hedgers, many of whom short the ETF to hedge a position and need it to accurately track its underlying. In today’s news we are now learning that brokers (known as FCM’s in the world of futures trading) might now be unwilling to deal with the USO ETF for risk management reasons. RBC Capital is the USO ETF’s only clearing broker and RBC has informed the ETF that they are longer prepared to clear USO’s portfolio. Specifically, in the benchmark front month but also, rather surprisingly, in any other expirations. RBC has indicated that this limitation on USO is a result of RBC’s own internal risk management requirements and directions it has received from other regulators in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Ugh… Brokers. USO just filed an update to the SEC today explaining: RBC, currently USO’s only FCM, has expressly informed USO that, until further notice, USO may not hold positions in the Benchmark Futures Oil Futures Contract and that it may not purchase any other Oil Futures Contracts for USO’s portfolio through RBC whether or not such purchases would be within the limits permitted by the exchanges. RBC and other market participants , including other FCMs, have taken risk mitigation measures that constrain USO’s ability to invest in the Benchmark Futures Contract and other Oil Futures Contracts. USO has been engaging in efforts to enter into additional FCM agreements for the purpose of the purchase and sale of Benchmark Oil Futures Contracts as well as other Oil Futures Contracts. To date, USO has not entered into an agreement with any FCM other than RBC and it cannot predict with any certainty when it will do so. Some more History: USO’s sister product, the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), experienced similar, but lesser stresses in the Summer of 2009. First its AUM exploded, then it started experimenting with exotic instruments, next its registered shares got depleted, then its creations were suspended, then it continued to trade at a premium despite creations being suspended, then the SEC failed to grant it permission for the issuance of new shares. So far this is the same as the USO. For UNG, the SEC ended up changing its mind after regulators got involved with position limits, and finally, the fund reopened. This situation is different, as the problem is with brokers, their willingness to take risk combined with their regulators possibly advising them on their risks in the background. What this means for the oil market at this point is unclear. In the strictest literal interpretation of the filing, it could mean that unless it finds an alternative clearer right away, the USO will be forced to liquidate all its holdings before the next roll period. A looser interpretation might be that it is allowed to hold onto existing positions but not be allowed to add new ones. In a continuing contango market this would see it run down its overall position over time. RBC is not just a broker, but also an Authorized Participant creating and breaking up ETP Units. Authorizedparticipants tend to become the counterparts of the derivatives the USO acquires. So the long positions the fund holds are offset by short positions taken on by the fund’s authorized participants. It remains to be seen what will happen with the USO ETF and for us to discover what RBC Capital’s exposures to the USO are at this point.

We are launching a series of calls to help us reinforce a coordinated DiEM25 narrative about where Europe and its nations are right now politically, economically, socially, and our movement’s role is in these historic times. All calls will be conducted as teleconferences, with coordinators (NCs, EWs or DSCs where the former do not exist) as panellists, and all other DiEMers as participants (with the right to ask questions, but not participate in the discussion). Participants can also come from other countries. The duration of the calls will be 2 hours each. From the side of the CC, in each call, there will be 4 members participating, two men (Yanis being one) and two women. One of the four will also be the moderator of the discussion, taking questions from the observers and facilitating the discussion among the “panellists”. All interventions from panellists must not exceed two minutes, so as to allow everyone the same space to express themselves. The coronavirus crisis is revealing that the powers that be of the European Union have learned nothing from the Eurocrisis. They are currently betraying the interests of the majority of Europeans in the same way that they have done so in 2010 -- by failing to mobilize existing money and public financial instruments in the interests of the many. With their current decisions, they are jeopardizing public health, public goods and the interests of Europeans. We call it TV because we like retro-futurism. But it's much more than TV. How did BC flatten the curve? British Columbia, Canada has been one of the safest places in the Western world when it comes to the Covid-19 outbreak. The government has done an excellent job responding and keeping BC residents safe, but the province, which is home to an incredibly large Asian population, might have some advantages to other regions around the world when it comes to preparing for the Covid-19. In this video, we highlight why BC is Canada's safest province.
It's time to build the ultimate robot dog using the R&D from my previous builds. This dog will use Quasi-Direct Drive from large diameter low KV brushless motors so that we can make the joints dynamically compliant using the same method as my previous back-drivable test dogs which worked well. I'll then add the some of the dynamics I tested in the miniDog series. This time I'm building a test leg, using two Turnigy Multistar 9225 90 KV motors controlled by an ODrive, I'm testing out the load a single leg can take with a 5:1 belt reduction on both the knee and hip. The design still needs a lot of refining. Passive investment indexes in times of market volatility have become a subplot of the recent drama in markets, following wild moves in the oil market. It’s looking like things could kick off in stocks, too, as index overseers consider ejecting underperforming companies. In indexes like the S&P 500, dozens of companies are at risk of deletion, after shares dove in March. While index compilers are guided by rules, they must also use their judgment in assessing the market right now: how much of the recent plunge will turn out to be permanent? The S&P committee is going to have to decide how long to wait before ejecting impaired companies, The S&P 500 may be the world’s most-followed passive index, but the recent market volatility is going to force its constructors into some very active choices. More than 30 firms might be removed from the S&P 500. The S&P500 has staged a remarkable recovery since March, a rebound whose strength is largely due to its weighting in technology and health-care stocks. Less noticed by investors is the impact of almost fifty company removals over the last three years. These deletions were mostly of retail, industrial and energy companies, sectors that have happened to struggle the most in 2020. A basket of the companies deleted from the S&P 500 over the past three years (for reasons other than acquisitions) is down 47% this year, almost five times more than the broad markets 2020 decline. Just five of the deleted firms have shown positive returns year to date. Bed Bath & Beyond and Macy’s, two large retailers are down around 70%. Many of these companies were in some form of trouble before 2020, justifying their removal. But the fact that they belong to the industries that have struggled the most this year has been fortunate for anyone with passive index exposure to the market. Changes in index members are made as needed and can be made at any time, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. Human judgment is part of the process, the committee aims to minimize turnover and doesn’t view crossing below thresholds governing, market capitalization, as a reason alone to eject a stock. The criteria for addition to an index are not the same as those for continued membership according to the S&P U.S. Indices Methodology rule book available on the Standard & Poors website. “An index constituent that appears to violate criteria for addition to that index is not necessarily going to be deleted unless its impairment is judged to be more permanent. Removal of 30 companies would exceed the annual average over the last thirty years and be one of the busiest years on record. Even passive investments have active elements, a fact on display last month when an oil ETF reshuffled the mix of its futures in order to protect itself from blowing up. A company must have a market-cap of at least $8.2 billion for S&P 500 consideration. Liquidity must also be sufficient, and the sum of total earnings over the past four quarters must be positive, along with profits in the most recent quarter. Market-cap guidelines for the S&P500 were raised to $8.2 billion on Feb. 20, 2019, about a fifth of companies in the index no longer meet that standard today. The index committee is probably hesitant to add more technology firms to a benchmark that’s already very concentrated in that sector. The Information Technology sector makes up 26% of the index, the highest share since the dot-com boom. D4A merch: https://teespring.com/en-GB/d4a-merch Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/d4a In 1676 Sir Isaac Newton wrote this in one of his letters „If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants“. If there was ever an engine that this quote applied to, it's got to be the LS engine. Because the GM LS is the direct descendant and the modernized and improved version of one of the most Iconic engine designs ever made the Small block Chevrolet engine. The timeless original small block design was on the market for almost half a century and during that time it managed to set itself apart by being a class leader in many aspects. But by the 90s the small block Chevy finally started to show it's age. It was time for a successor. So GM introduced the Generation II of small block engines, but unfortunately without much success. The Generation II was largely based on the original small block, and just like the small block it started to struggle with the strict emissions, mpg and weight regulations of the 90s. So by the mid 90s GM decided that it was time for a clean sheet design. A brand new V8 engine. But the generation III and IV of the GM small block could have turned out very differently, because in the 90s everyone was talking about DOCH, V6 that, inline 4 this and even within GM there was this feeling present that the pushrod is a dinosaur with no future. But GM wasn't quite ready to give up their push-rod so to decide the future of the engine GM carried out some blind testing using their own executives which ended with the conclusion that the entire GM leadership preferred the pushrod engine. After driving two otherwise identical C4 corvettes, one with a pushrod LT4 and the other with the Lotus designed DOCH LT5 engine the management decided that the pushrod was staying. But the other important thing done by GM after the blind testing is that they appointed the right person for the job. They didn't import engineers, but relied on one of their own veterans, Ed Koerner. A veteran of engine design but also a true car enthusiast, a drag racer and record holder himself. If you want an engine that will be loved by petrolheads, you better get a petrol-head to design it. The GM LS engine premiered in the form of the LS1 engine in 1997 in the engine bay of the C5 Corvette. It made impact right after it's launch and won Ward's engine of the year award in the same year. In the following years the LS family would spawn several truck engines such as the LM, LR, LY, LQ, some of which make great starting points for projects. The generation IV of the small block started in 2005 with the LS2 and improved many aspects of the engine including the intake and exhaust and brought new technologies such as displacement on demand and variable valve timing. 2006 brought the Z06 C6 corvette and the 7 liter behemoth LS7 engine, which was soon up followed up by the LS3, perhaps the most popular LS swap engine. After this the horsepower monsters, the supercharged LS9 and LSA powered the Cadillac CTS-V, the ZL1 Camaro and the ZR1 Corvette and came as the final hurrah of the LS which would finally end it's production in 2017. Something that was heralded already in 2014 by the C7 corvette and it's LT1 engine. When it comes to the specs all LS engines have 90 degrees opposed cylinder banks and a deep skirted Y shaped engine block which is a massive improvement in strength over the original small block chevy block design. The deep skirted block also enabled engineers to design 6 bolt cross bolted main bearings caps. The block also accommodates some very long held bolts for minimized bore distortion. All LS engines have forged powdered metal connecting rods with fracture split caps. An exception to this are the LS7 and LS9 engines which feature some very fancy titanium connecting rods. The heads feature hydraulic valve lifters and some very nice lifter guides that make it possible to swap cams on the LS engine without removing the heads. When it comes to tuning, the LS engine family is a true champion because it has a lot of things going for it, it's readily available, reliable and has an amazing aftermarket. The block is strong and can take a lot of boost. If you want massive power the only thing your really have to get rid of are the stock cast pistons and powdered metal rods, after which the LS engine can take you to the stratosphere. The stock crankshaft, even though it's cast nodular iron, is very strong and can take 1000 hp like a champ. When it comes to the camshafts, many stock LS camshafts are pretty well suited for boost, except when aiming for obscene power. NA tuning the LS on the other hand starts with cams, intake and exhaust and some remaps.
