What is up engine heads! Today we're doing a bit of time travel! Why? Because I want to tell you a really interesting story about Maserati, and their incredible 6 valve engine from the 80s. D4A merch: https://teespring.com/en-GB/d4a-merch Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/d4a Our Journey starts in 1975. Why in 1975? Because that's when Argentinian entrepreneur Alejandro De Tomaso, yes, that De Tomaso, the one that founded the DeTomaso car company that would eventually make the Detomaso Pantera, the Detomaso Mangusta and other seriously cool cars. In 1975 Alejandro de Tomaso was living in Italy instead of his home country of Argentina, because in 1955 he forced to flee his country after being implicated in a plot to overthrow Argentinian president Juan Peron. After arriving in Italy Alejandro De Tomasso became Alessandro de Tomaso, he worked as a mechanic, then a race car driver, and then using money from his wife's wealthy relatives he went on a shopping spree and bought out coach builders Ghia and Vignale, motorcycle makers Moto Guzzi and Benelli and car and scooter maker Innocenti. But his most famous purchase happened in 1975, when he managed to convince the Italian government to help him rescue Maserati from bankruptcy. In 1975 Maserati was owned by Citroen, who were also undergoing financial struggles at the time, so with support and funds from the Italian government De Tomaso bought Maserati from Ctiroen in 1975 and immediately set out to transform the company. De Tomaso's plan was to bring Italian luxury to the masses, and make make cars that were more affordable and produced in larger volume than the cars Maserati was making under Citroen, such as the Maserati Bora or the Maserati Khamsin. And in 1982 his plan was materialized with the launch of the Maserati Biturbo. The first mass produced twin turbo-charged car in the world. A car that cost half as much as previous Maserati models and aimed to compete with BMW and Mercedes coupes and sport sedans. And although some may not like the styling of the Biturbo it featured a very clever engine for the time. And it had to be clever, because at that time Italy heavily taxed any cars with engines larger than 2.0 liters. So Maserati had to make a 2 liter or smaller engine but still make the power expected from a luxury sports car. So what they came up with was a pretty revolutionary engine for the time. It was an all aluminum 2.0L SOHC V-6, with Nikasil coated wet-sleeves and twin oil cooled IHI turbos. BTW IHI stands for Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, and it's a Japanese company that in addition to turbos also makes suspension bridges and ships. The turbos were installed one on each bank of cylinders and were pretty small. Small turbos were chosen so they could spool up quickly and prevent the dreaded massive turbo lag that plagued many turbo cars from the 80s. But despite this, the engine made 180 hp from just 2.0 liters and propelled the BiTurbo to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. Pretty impressive for 1982. And while time would show that the initial carbureted Maserati Biturbo cars would be plagued by many reliability problems, the car was a business and sales success. With almost 40.000 Biturbos sold throughout the years, generating the much needed profit to save Maserati from bankruptcy. DeTomaso succeeded in his plan, but he wasn't satisfied yet. The newly acquired profits meant Maserati could go invest into some R&D and show off to the world what they're capable off by further developing the tiny little v6 engine. The 2.0 liter Biturbo engine had three valves per cylinder. 2 intake and 1 exhaust, and this wasn't enough. If you wanted to be on top of the performance game in the 80s you needed 4 valves per cylinder. But DeTomaso wasn't a man of small appetites, he wasn't just going to increase his valve count by 1, so he decided to skip a few engine evolution stages and instructed engineers to start working on something truly incredible. A six valve cylinder head. He even one upped Yamaha's craziness of their 5 valve FZ750 super-bike that they introduced in 1984. So 1985 a late 1985 press release titled "Hi-Tech News," the Maserati 6.36 engine was a 2.0-liter 36-valve V6 set to hit the road in a two-seat sports car in just a few years time. The press release got everyone excited but after some time passed....nothing. Silence. Nobody ever heard anything about the 6 valve from Maserati again. Why? What happened, why did they never make this truly incredible engine? Well, for that answer you'll have to watch the video :) A very special thank you to my Patron: Daniel and http://maserati-alfieri.co.uk/ for maintaining an incredible website full of amazing information on the 6.36 and everything else Maserati driving 4 answers is part of the Amazon Associates program. #d4a #maserati #6.36

CORRECTIONS: [none yet] Welcome to Episode Two of my series about molecular beam epitaxy! In this video, I'm talking about the best way to shoot a beam of atoms at something… As much as that sounds like a crazy scifi weapon, it's actually a great technique for delivering material to a growing crystalline thin film. All materials, even solids, have a vapor pressure and are slowly evaporating. When you put a chunk of material in a vacuum chamber and get it hot, it can evaporate so fast the vapor can be directed towards a target! Which Country is Spending The Most on their COVID-19 Bailout? Paper by Professor Ceyhun Elgin http://web.boun.edu.tr/elgin/COVID_19.pdf Buy Patrick's Book Here: https://amzn.to/2J2kF3A Visit our website: http://onfinance.org Follow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyle According to the IMF, by early April countries around the world have approved more than $4.5tn worth of emergency measures. That number has only grown since. In todays video, lets learn which country has the most generous deal and the different approaches they are taking Professor Elgin of Columbia University recently published a paper titled Economic Policy Responses to a Pandemic where he reviews the different economic policy measures adopted by 166 different countries as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He then constructs an Economic Stimulus Index that combines all of the adopted policy measures. In addition, he analyzes how hard-hit various countries were by the pandemic and how that affects the extent of the countries’ economic policy responses. I’ll put a link to his paper in the description below. Japan's response to the pandemic has been among the most aggressive, with a spending package estimated at around 20% of the country's economy. (It is topped only by Malta, which benefits from European Union funds.) That compares to rescue spending estimated at roughly 14% of GDP in the US, 11% in Australia, 8.4% in Canada, 5% in the UK, 1.5% in Colombia and 0.6% in Gambia. That ranking changes significantly if measures beyond spending, such as central bank actions, are considered. In the biggest European countries, government pledges to guarantee new loans provided to businesses hurt by the shutdowns has accounted for a major part of the response. This is put in place to keep banks lending preventing widespread bankruptcies. In the United States the Federal Reserve has stepped in with lending programmes with a similar aim. When we factor in those kinds of actions, France is at the top of the pack in terms of generosity and the UK is now in fifth place, rather than 47th place. Dr. Elgin shows that the biggest responses have occurred in countries that are richer, older - and have fewer hospital beds. Countries like the US and Japan are in a better position to finance new spending, due to investor willingness to buy their bonds, which keeps the interest cost of this spending lower. Dr. Elgin notes that that the various countries are deploying these funds quite differently. In many countries, the aid is targeted at the poor and to those less likely to get assistance through other programmes. Many are conditioned on a person's job or income having been affected by shutdowns. Canada, is providing CAD 2,000 ($1,400) per month for up to four months to those who have lost income due to the pandemic. All Americans earning under $99,000 are to receive as much as $1,200 per adult, while South Korea's central government is sending cheques of up to 1 million won ( $820) to families in the bottom 70% income bracket. Hong Kong,Japan and Singapore are all pursuing similar strategies mailing cheques to working age citizens. In Europe, many countries have opted against one-off bonuses and are relying instead on the existing safety net programmes, like the UK's Universal Credit system, to meet the needs of those who have lost their jobs. A common strategy globally has been government programmes that help cover payrolls for companies suffering from lockdown measures. The idea is that if firms retain staff, this will allow the economy bounce back more quickly once the restrictions are lifted as companies will not have to re hire and retrain staff. The US, has taken a different approach, dedicating more than $650bn to business loans, which do not have to be repaid if firms maintain staffing levels and spend the majority of the funds on wages within two months. The US Paycheck Protection Program has been overwhelmed by demand and there has been controversy over large companies sucking up much of the money, which had been pitched as relief for small businesses. Democratic lawmakers in Congress are clashing with the White House and Republicans over a new multibillion-dollar stimulus package for the US economy, even as a terrible jobs report revealed the damage to the labor market caused by coronavirus. Citing Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Depression-era New Deal as a precedent, Democratic party leaders on Capitol Hill are calling for urgent fiscal measures to help struggling households, and state and local governments. President Donald Trump on Friday said there was “no rush” to reach a compromise. Republicans are balking at the possible price tag, which could be as high as $2tn, and insisting on provisions to shield businesses from litigation as they reopen their doors following weeks of forced shutdowns.
Correction to what I say at 2:46 mins: The Schwarzschild radius of the Sun is a few miles (not a few thousand miles). What's in the illustration is correct. Sorry about that. Correction to what I say at 4:47: It should have been "They had turned from mathematically wrong to mathematically *corrrect* but non-physical" Black holes rose to the attention of physicists early in the 20th century when Karl Schwarzschild found that they are one of the possible solutions of the equations of Einstein's theory of general relativity. However, at first they were believed to be mathematical curiosities without physical relevance. In this video I explain how and why the situation changed. We are launching a series of calls to help us reinforce a coordinated DiEM25 narrative about where Europe and its nations are right now politically, economically, socially, and our movement’s role is in these historic times. All calls will be conducted as teleconferences, with coordinators (NCs, EWs or DSCs where the former do not exist) as panellists, and all other DiEMers as participants (with the right to ask questions, but not participate in the discussion). Participants can also come from other countries. The duration of the calls will be 2 hours each. From the side of the CC, in each call, there will be 4 members participating, two men (Yanis being one) and two women. One of the four will also be the moderator of the discussion, taking questions from the observers and facilitating the discussion among the “panellists”. All interventions from panellists must not exceed two minutes, so as to allow everyone the same space to express themselves. In todays video we will talk about the Bank of England’s forecast that the Coronavirus epidemic will push the UK economy into its deepest recession in 300 years and their decision not to provide any new stimulus right away. Buy The Book Here: https://amzn.to/2J2kF3A Visit our website: www.onfinance.org Follow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyle The Bank of England in its monetary policy report this morning put forth its predictions for the UK economy. Suggesting that output would fall 3% in the first quarter followed by 25% in the second quarter an almost 30% drop in output drop in the first half of 2020 the fastest and deepest recession since the great frost in 1709. The great frost of 1709 saw three months of deadly cold that led to a year of famine and food riots in Europe. everything turned to ice. Lakes and rivers and seas froze, the soil froze to a depth of a meter or more. Livestock died from cold in their barns and travelers froze to death on the roads. The last time we have had an annual drop in real GDP of more than 4.5% was in 1945. The last time we have had an annual drop in real GDP of greater than 10% was in 1709. These economic projections came with a warning to Britain’s banks that if they tried to stem losses by restricting lending, they would make the situation worse. Andrew Bailey, the BoE governor, said a failure to lend would create a vicious circle of more bankruptcies and higher losses on loans that would come back to hit the banks themselves. Mr Bailey said: “The better path for banks is to keep lending if the system ensures a good supply of loans, we’ll get a better outcome.” Commercial banks responded that they were committed to lending through the crisis. the BoE warned that, even with adequate lending, the economy was bound to take a big hit; household spending has already dropped about 30 per cent since early March. The central bank forecast that the UK’s unemployment rate was likely to rise to 9 per cent by next year, even with the government’s job retention scheme protecting many employees from being laid off. That would mean a higher rate of joblessness than after the 2008 financial crisis. They forecast that inflation would dip to 0.5 per cent in 2021, before returning to the 2 per cent target the following year. On a more positive note, Mr Bailey said the economic rebound was likely to happen “much more rapidly than the pullback from the global financial crisis”. They assume that long-term damage to the economy would be only 1.5 per cent GDP coming from missed business investment in 2020. Otherwise the prediction is for a V-shaped recovery. Bailey defended the decision not to take more immediate action, saying the measures announced in March had not been exhausted and that they have made a very clear commitment to do what it takes to support the economy consistent with the inflation target. All MPC members agreed that more stimulus might be needed in future. The central bank is signalling that more QE is in the pipeline. The BoE analyzed if the financial system could cope with their expected recession. They say that that banks will lose less money than in their latest stress test and that “the core banking system has capital buffers more than sufficient to absorb losses”. The BoE did stress that the pandemic would severely hit corporate cash flow. Government support would plug some of the gap, but there remains a £60bn additional deficit that banks would need to cover to stop viable businesses from going under. The central bank warned that if banks failed to provide credit to their business customers, they might see a short-term benefit in reduced losses, but this would cause more companies to fail and unemployment to rise another 2 percentage points, ultimately leading to larger losses.

A string of tornados and storms passed through the Southeastern US, and Berm Peak took a bit of a beating! This weekend, Alexander and I turn a downed Elm into a really fun skinny mountain bike bridge named Elm'r Fudd. This was a challenging feature to build, but it was even more challenging to ride. The coronavirus crisis is revealing that the powers that be of the European Union have learned nothing from the Eurocrisis. They are currently betraying the interests of the majority of Europeans in the same way that they have done so in 2010 -- by failing to mobilize existing money and public financial instruments in the interests of the many. With their current decisions, they are jeopardizing public health, public goods and the interests of Europeans. We call it TV because we like retro-futurism. But it's much more than TV. Another basic principle of IUPAC nomenclature is the suffix. Suffixes help in identifying the functional group present in a carbon compound. There are two types - primary and secondary suffix. In this video, we discuss the primary suffix in detail and learn how to name some of the simple hydrocarbons.

Start enhancing your understanding with our comprehensive WSET Level 2 mock exams, available here: https://e-learningwine.winewithjimmy.com/course/e-learning-wine-level-2. In this intermediate guide, we delve into the world of Tempranillo, the most planted Spanish red grape variety, known for its versatility and range from fresh, easy-drinking styles to complex Gran Reservas. Explore Tempranillo's medium acidity and tannins, and learn about the common practice of blending it with other varieties. We'll also discuss the crucial role of aging in Tempranillo's expression, including the traditional classifications from Joven to Gran Reserva in Rioja, and how they influence the wine's evolution. Discover Tempranillo's signature flavors of red fruits, complemented by oak-induced notes and rich tertiary flavors as it ages. While primarily associated with regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero in Spain, Tempranillo's influence extends globally. For more insights into the world of wine, follow me on Twitter and Instagram at @WineWithJimmy. If you're in London, visit our wine schools and the Streatham Wine House for tastings and courses. Tips and Tricks for HDPE machining on a desktop router 📢 Twitter: https://twitter.com/BreakingTaps A quick video describing some tips and tricks for machining HDPE on my AvidCNC Benchtop Pro. Not surprisingly, plastic is super easy machine relative to metal... but there are a few tricks that ensure a good finish and accurate dimensions The project in question is another set of face shield molds for some viewers that requested them (tweaked slightly to use Smoothcast 65D, hence the different/thinner shape). But the objective of this video is to give general tips for machining HDPE, not specific details about the mold or operations.
Todays we look at the investing adage "Sell in May and Go Away" Does it make sense today and is it a good general rule? Let's examine the statistics. Buy Patrick's Book Here: https://amzn.to/2J2kF3A Visit our website: www.onfinance.org Follow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyle US stocks finished their biggest monthly rally this April since 1987. The market rose 12.7% over the month, cutting the coronavirus-driven losses on the S&P 500 to about 10 per cent year to date, despite an economic shock far greater than the financial crisis a decade ago. Some investors have expressed doubts about whether the rallies have further to run but are reluctant to bet against the massive interventions by central banks and governments around the world. The rally in equities is not driven by fundamentals but by the liquidity support from the Federal Reserve. The rally has been led by the tech sector that dominate the US stock market. Amazon and Netflix have both gained more than 40 per cent from their mid-March lows, benefiting from the shutdowns around the world that have kept billions of people indoors, reliant on home delivery and streaming entertainment. A big gap between signals from the commodities and bond markets, which indicate expectations for a long period of low growth and stocks, which are pricing in a strong rebound for economic growth and corporate earnings. It is a tug of war between central bank policy and stock fundamentals. Right now, policy is winning. Howard Marks of Oaktree recently said on CNBC “We're only down 15% from the all-time high of February 19, and it seems to me the world is more than 15% screwed up. "It took seven years to get back to the 2000 highs in 2007," Marks told CNBC. "It took five-and-a-half years to get back to the 2007 highs in late 2012." "Is it really appropriate that, given all the bad news in the world today, we should get back to the highs in only three months? That seems inappropriately positive," he added. So, does the Halloween Indicator actually work? Looking at S&P500 monthly returns from 1928 to present we can see that November - April Returns are on average +5.1% while May – October returns average out at +2.1% An academic paper by Jacobsen and Bouman from 1998, which was updated in 2009 finds that this inherited wisdom is true in 36 of the 37 developed and emerging markets that they studied. The 'Sell in May' effect tends to be particularly strong in European countries and is robust over time. Sample evidence, for instance, shows that in the UK the effect has been noticeable since 1694. So, what is the lesson of this? Should investors follow every investing adage that they hear? No, hopefully your take-away from this piece is that most ideas that are testable should be tested. It took less than fifteen minutes for me to download the monthly data and study this effect. While returns are indeed lower over the summer half of the year, there is a general positive expectation associated with investing in stocks. If you want to have a handful of winning investment rules, the best way to get them is to download some stock market data from the internet and test your ideas. Sell in May and Go Away 2020
