Hoewel Amsterdam veel Oranjefans telt, zijn er natuurlijk ook veel Amsterdammers die ook juichen voor een ander land tijdens het WK. In Amsterdam wonen ruim 2.400 Argentijnen.  Vandaag spreken we Ezequiel en Geraldina Paludi, die tangoles geven in Zuid. In het midden van de danszaal, authentieke houten vloer en roodfluwelen beklede vensterbankjes, dansen Ezequiel en zijn partner Geraldine een gepassioneerde tango. Het stel is al twintig jaar samen en woont nu tien jaar in Amsterdam. Ze zijn verliefd geworden op de stad en op elkaar, geven ze toe. En dat is voelbaar: zwoele blikken worden gewisseld en het zweet staat op hun voorhoofd terwijl hun voeten vluchtig over de dansvloer bewegen. De passie tussen de twee is niet alleen merkbaar op de dansvloer, maar ook in hun fanatieke support tijdens het WK, waar Argentinië zich opmaakt voor de halve finale tegen Engeland woensdagavond. Het Argentijnse team komt wel eens negatief in de media, maar de dansers zien dat helemaal niet zo: "Wij vinden het juist heel mooi hoe het team de Argentijnse cultuur uitdraagt," zegt Ezequiel. "Ze zijn echt een familie", voegt Geraldina daar aan toe. En dat familiegevoel vinden ze ook zo belangrijk. "Iedereen moet meer dansen", vindt het stel. "Het is passie, verbinding, oog hebben voor elkaar." Dat is ook iets wat Amsterdammers van de Argentijnen kunnen leren, volgens hen.  Ze hebben zin in het WK, maar of ze de wedstrijd van vanavond gaan kijken? Ze geven tangoles. Dus helaas. *Dit is een onderzoek uit 2024. We brengen dit onderzoek opnieuw onder de aandacht. In Nederland rukt de brandweer honderden keren per dag uit. Dat zijn niet alleen branden, maar ook verkeersongevallen, verdrinkingen, suïcides en reanimaties. De bijna dagelijkse confrontatie met ernstig letsel en de dood kan grote gevolgen hebben voor brandweermensen. Zembla onderzoekt hoe vaak posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS) voorkomt binnen de brandweer en wat er gebeurt wanneer hulpverleners zelf hulp nodig hebben. Al in 2015 beloofde de Nederlandse brandweertop onderzoek te doen naar de omvang van PTSS en de ondersteuning van getraumatiseerde brandweermensen te verbeteren. Uit onderzoek van Zembla in 2024 blijkt dat de brandweer nog altijd beperkt zicht heeft op de omvang en ernst van het probleem. Waar PTSS bij de politie en Defensie al langere tijd wordt erkend als beroepsziekte, is dat bij de brandweer niet het geval. Zembla sprak in 2024 met brandweermensen, onderzoekers, advocaten, vakbonden en leidinggevenden binnen de brandweer. Brandweerlieden vertellen dat zij vaak zelf op zoek moeten naar psychologische hulp en soms terechtkomen in langdurige juridische procedures. Ook kunnen medewerkers die uitvallen door PTSS te maken krijgen met inkomensverlies. Tijs van Lieshout, directeur van de veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland en voorzitter van de landelijke raad van brandweercommandanten, zegt tegenover Zembla dat getraumatiseerde brandweermensen al jarenlang onvoldoende hulp krijgen. Volgens officiële cijfers gaat het om een beperkt aantal PTSS-diagnoses binnen de brandweer. Maar internationale onderzoeken wijzen op aanzienlijk hogere aantallen. Onderzoeker Miriam Lommen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen schat op basis van internationale studies dat mogelijk ongeveer 1.500 Nederlandse brandweermensen kampen met PTSS-klachten. Toch blijkt uit een rondgang van Zembla dat de meeste veiligheidsregio’s geen actueel overzicht hebben van het aantal brandweermensen met PTSS. De video laat ook zien hoe het werk van de brandweer in de afgelopen jaren veranderde. Sinds 2006 voert de brandweer steeds vaker reanimaties uit omdat zij vaak sneller ter plaatse is dan de ambulance. Alleen in Amsterdam en Rotterdam verrichtte de brandweer vorig jaar al ongeveer 2.000 reanimaties. Bij een groot deel daarvan overlijdt het slachtoffer. Brandweermensen vertellen over de impact van deze ervaringen, waaronder reanimaties van baby’s en jonge kinderen. Daarnaast onderzoekt Zembla welke ondersteuning beschikbaar is voor brandweermensen met psychische klachten. Door het ontbreken van landelijk beleid verschillen de regelingen per veiligheidsregio. Slechts enkele regio’s hebben financiële voorzieningen voor medewerkers met PTSS en alleen Rotterdam-Rijnmond heeft een psycholoog in dienst. Ook kijkt Zembla naar het landelijke Steunpunt Brandweer, dat werd opgericht om brandweermensen en hun familieleden te ondersteunen, maar waarvoor tegenwoordig nog slechts drie veiligheidsregio’s zijn aangesloten. De directeuren van de veiligheidsregio’s Amsterdam-Amstelland en Rotterdam-Rijnmond erkennen tegenover Zembla dat de nazorg voor brandweermensen jarenlang tekort is geschoten. Zij pleiten voor landelijke erkenning van PTSS als beroepsziekte. Of die erkenning er komt, is nog onduidelijk. Zembla onderzoekt wat dit betekent voor brandweermensen die tijdens hun werk psychische schade oplopen en welke verantwoordelijkheid de brandweer heeft voor hun zorg en ondersteuning. Hulpverleners in het Wallengebied zijn niet verbaasd over de aanhoudingen die gisteravond zijn gedaan bij een grote politieactie. De arrestaties werden gedaan in een onderzoek naar mensenhandel. Marja Sijpestein van Scharlaken Noord spreekt als hulpverlener veel met sekswerkers en noemt het belangrijk dat mensenhandel wordt aangepakt. "Wij spreken veel vrouwen die dan of in een later stadium vertellen dat ze uitgebuit worden. Dat kan in verschillende vormen en soms hebben de vrouwen zelf niet door at ze in die situatie zitten", aldus Sijpestein. "Het gaat dan om iemand die bijvoorbeeld woonruimte geeft of die ze helpt met transport, maar daar onevenredig veel geld voor achterhoudt of vraagt. Maar dat is ook uitbuiting." Verschillende specialistische eenheden, zoals het arrestatieteam, waren gisteren aanwezig bij de acties. Vier personen werden hier in het centrum aangehouden, tegelijkertijd werden drie verdachten in Roemenië gearresteerd. Belang onderzoek De verdachten zitten in beperkingen, waardoor ze alleen contact mogen hebben met hun advocaat. De politie kan daarom ook niet veel kwijt over de zaak, maar volgens Het Parool zou het gaan om een grote pooierbende uit Roemenië. "We begrijpen heel goed dat mensen hier vragen over hebben. De politieactie was heel zichtbaar, het is echt een druk stukje Amsterdam. Maar in het belang van het onderzoek moeten we nu echt even terughoudend zijn met het delen van informatie. In this interview, I speak with Andrew Murray of Andrew Murray Vineyards about his lifelong passion for Syrah and the happy accident that helped shape his career. Andrew explains how a misidentified Viognier cutting ultimately turned out to be Syrah, setting him on a path that would lead to Syrah accounting for around 90% of the winery’s production. We discuss why Syrah has remained California’s perennial “up-and-coming” grape variety, the challenges created by its ability to grow in so many different climates, and the remarkable diversity of styles found across Santa Barbara County. Een servicebeurt aan de lift in een ouderencomplex aan de Laan van Vlaanderen in Nieuw-West blijkt een ramp voor de bewoners. Een aanzienlijk deel van de ouderen die er wonen heeft een rollator, rolstoel of scootmobiel nodig om zich te kunnen verplaatsen. Nu de enige lift van het pand eruit ligt voor geplande werkzaamheden van twee weken, kunnen ze geen kant op, want traplopen lukt hen niet. Een witte slagboom met het TK Elevator-logo en Nederlandse tekst blokkeert de toegang tot een ruimte. Op de slagboom staan twee rode verbodstekens en een mededeling over onderhoudswerkzaamheden. De slagboom staat op een grijze vloer, vlakbij lichtgekleurd Verhalen met een kapotte lift, die kennen we. In dit geval gaat het om een servicebeurt van twee weken, dus de lift deed het tot nu toe prima. Bewoners snappen ook dat er onderhoud nodig is, zeggen ze. Toch is er in dit geval veel misgegaan, want het door woningcorporatie Eigen Haard beloofde alternatief voor de lift ontbreekt. "Dat zou een stoeltjeslift zijn langs de trappen omhoog", vertelt bewoner Marja Rexwinkel. "Wij weten dat er mensen zijn met scootmobiels, dus toen zijn we eigenlijk gelijk gaan bellen van 'hebben jullie daaraan gedacht?' Want die kunnen niet op een stoeltjeslift." Dat geldt ook voor Hans, die lijdt aan MS. Hij heeft een elektrische rolstoel en scootmobiel. Een stoeltjeslift zou voor hem dus geen optie zijn. "Ik zou er op kunnen gaan zitten en omhoog en naar beneden kunnen", beschrijft hij. "Leuk, dan heb je ook een uitje. Maar dan sta ik beneden en dan kom ik verder nergens meer. Want de benen willen niet meer." De aankondiging voor de werkzaamheden was in mei, toen hing er een brief in de lift. De bewoners waren blij met de heldere communicatie, hoewel er dus zorgen waren voor het deel dat gebruikmaakt van rollators en scootmobiels. Ze hoopten dat er nog wat verzonnen zou worden op dit ongemak, voordat de werkzaamheden zouden beginnen. Geen alternatief Het was daarom ook een bittere pil toen de monteur afgelopen maandag begon aan de servicebeurt van de lift, zonder dat de stoeltjeslift was geplaatst en zonder dat er met Eigen Haard nagedacht kon worden over hulp voor de rollator- en scootmobielgebruikers. De gevolgen zijn groot, voor Leendert van den Berg en zijn vrouw. "Het is in- en intriest dat het zo moet en dat veertien dagen lang", geeft hij aan. "Mijn vrouw moet eigenlijk vrijdag naar het Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, maar we kunnen er niet heen omdat we niet naar beneden kunnen." Een oudere man met een bril staat voor de deur van een appartement, met een rollator in zijn hand. Hij draagt een rood en marineblauw shirt en een korte broek. Aan de reling en de muur hangen bloempotten. Linksonder staat het logo „AT5“. Foto: AT5 Dat zijn vrouw waarschijnlijk niet naar haar behandeling tegen kanker kan, maakt hem verdrietig. Ook al begrijpt hij tegelijkertijd ook dat onderhoud aan de lift noodzakelijk is. "Het moet ook wel gebeuren, maar dan moet je wel zorgen dat de mensen die er wonen op een fatsoenlijke manier naar beneden kunnen. En dat is nu niet." Hans heeft zich neergelegd bij de situatie en zorgt in ieder geval voor een aanzienlijke voorraad levensmiddelen. "Ik heb boodschappen in huis gehaald en mijn eten wordt zo gebracht. Die moet het ook naar boven dragen. Brood heb ik in de vriezer liggen en wat voorraad, dus dan kom ik een heel eind." Eigen Haard versnelt werkzaamheden De woordvoerder van Eigen Haard biedt zijn excuses aan voor de ontstane situatie. Hij erkent dat er in de voorbereiding zaken fout zijn gegaan, want deze gevolgen van de werkzaamheden had hij graag willen voorkomen. Na meerdere klachten en een telefoontje van AT5 staan er vanaf vandaag lifthulpen overdag, die begeleiden mensen de trap op en af. Dat dat voor een deel van de bewoners geen oplossing is, spijt Eigen Haard, maar daar kunnen ze voor nu niks meer aan doen. Today we're talking about shockwaves! Shockwaves and sound waves, and machines that create an arc that dumps enough energy into a bit of gas it can create shockwaves that travel tens of kilometers per second, make the air molecules split apart, react with each other, and glow! It's pretty amazing! All of the physics involved is cool by itself, but it's also extremely necessary from an engineering perspective when NASA tries to send spacecraft into other atmospheres where we can't just test a bunch of heatshields. We can't be 100% sure how bow shock in front of a spacecraft will behave… until we try it! This video is part garage demo, part physics simulation, and part laboratory tour, because last summer I got to visit NASA Ames and saw their EAST (Electric Arc Shock Tube) facility - the fastest shock tube in the world! Fans in geel-rode shirts kunnen hun geluk nauwelijks op: hun ploeg staat voor tegen Frankrijk, met sterspeler Kylian Mbappé. Toch blijven de Franse supporters tot het einde hopen op een ommekeer. In een snackbar op de Jan Evertsenstraat in West is vanmiddag brand uitgebroken. Bij de brand kwam veel rook vrij. De brandweer kwam met veel materieel ter plaatse voor bluswerkzaamheden. Er raakte niemand gewond. De brandweer kreeg rond 12.50 uur de eerste melding van de brand. Zo'n zes minuten later schaalde de brandweer op naar 'middelbrand' en kort daarna werd het sein 'grote brand' gegeven. Dat betekent dat er meerdere brandweerkazernes worden opgeroepen ter ondersteuning. Een woordvoerder van de brandweer liet rond 13.15 uur aan AT5 weten dat de brand onder controle is, maar dat er nog wel wordt nageblust. Ze kon later ook bevestigen dat er niemand gewond is geraakt. De woningen boven de snackbar zijn tijdelijk ontruimd. Nadat die waren geventileerd konden de bewoners terug naar huis.
