Discover the geography and soils of Galicia, one of Spain’s most distinctive wine regions. I explore the mountains, rivers, vineyard landscapes and soil types that shape the wines of Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and the wider Galician wine region. In this introduction to Galicia wine geography, I follow the Miño and Sil rivers through north-western Spain and examine the dramatic slopes associated with Galicia’s heroic viticulture. I also explain how granite, schist and slate influence the region’s vineyards, together with the traditional espaldeira and parral vine-training systems. Galicia’s landscape is defined by its Atlantic climate, mountainous interior, deeply cut river valleys and fragmented vineyard holdings known as minifundios. These conditions have encouraged growers to develop distinctive approaches to vineyard management. On flatter and more humid sites, the elevated parral system improves air circulation around the canopy, while steep river slopes are more commonly associated with espaldeira training and terraced vineyards. I also look at the Macizo Galaico, the Serra do Eixe, the Serra da Enciña da Lastra and the Serra do Courel before tracing the courses of Galicia’s two most important rivers: the Miño and the Sil. The final part of the video explores Galicia’s principal vineyard soils. Granite is especially important in western Galicia and Rías Baixas, while schist and slate become increasingly significant farther inland and in areas such as Ribeira Sacra. What makes something alive? A flame burns. A whirlpool spins. A cell maintains itself. All three are dynamic patterns. Matter is constantly flowing through them, yet their forms persist. But only one is considered alive. Why? This video explores one of the most fascinating ideas in biology and cognitive science: autopoiesis — the idea that living systems are not simply complicated machines, but systems that continuously produce and maintain themselves. Developed by Chilean biologists Francisco Varela and Humberto Maturana, autopoiesis attempts to answer one of the deepest questions in science: How does ordinary matter become a self? Steeds meer fietsers met helm: "Ik wilde niet voor lul lopen, dus heb deze genomen". Bij AT5 zijn we natuurlijk superhip en snel op de hoogte van de nieuwste trends, zo valt het de laatste tijd op dat er toch behoorlijk wat fietsers met een helm op de straat opgaan. Jaren geleden was dit echt hoogst uitzonderlijk, maar als je nu een uurtje gaat turven in het Vondelpark kom je streepjes tekort. Fietsenhandelaren bevestigen dat de vraag naar helmen toeneemt. En dat is wat de Fietsersbond betreft - uiteraard - een positieve ontwikkeling. In het Vondelpark valt het op: fietsers die een helm dragen. "Ik zit sinds kort op een elektrische fiets dus", zegt een vrouw met een e-bike. "Mogelijk dat ik ga vallen, maar dan niet meer zo hard op mijn hoofd." Een andere fietsers heeft zelfs een hele professionele helm op haar hoofd. "Met lichtjes achter en voor", lacht ze. "Dus ja, heel veilig denk ik." "Als je valt en je hebt hersenletsel, dan is het toch heel stom dat je geen helm op had", zegt een fietser met een groene pothelm. "Ik wilde alleen niet voor lul lopen, dus ik heb deze genomen." De fietsers die een helm dragen zijn veelal de mensen die een e-bike hebben, legt Florrie de Pater van de Fietsersbond uit. De voorzitter van de Amsterdamse afdeling van de bond is positief over de ontwikkeling dat meer en meer mensen een helm dragen. "Ze dragen het om zich te beschermen tegen ernstig hersenletsel." Toename in verkoop Niet alleen op straat valt het op, ook fietsenhandelaren merken dat ze meer fietshelmen verkopen. "De verkoop is zeker toegenomen de afgelopen tijd", legt Nils Rensen van een fietsenwinkel in Oud-Zuid uit. "We zien steeds meer expats in de stad komen en die kopen ook allemaal een helm", legt hij uit Rensen: "En de ouderen willen het qua veiligheid, het gaat toch allemaal steeds sneller tegenwoordig op straat. Die voelen zich veiliger met een helm". De Pater van de Fietsersbond adviseert voornamelijk ouderen en mensen met kinderen ook om een helm te gaan dragen. Zelf doet ze dat overigens nog niet: "Ik heb er een thuis, maar ben er psychisch nog niet helemaal aan toe. Daarbij, ik rij altijd op een gewone fiets." In 2035 wil de overheid dat circa een kwart van de Nederlanders een helm draagt. Als het aan fietsverkoper Rensen ligt is daar een cultuuromslag voor nodig. Armed Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank have carried out a number of attacks in recent days targeting local Palestinians and foreign journalists, as well as detaining U.S. Congressmember Ro Khanna during a fact-finding trip. Khanna said that when Israeli forces arrived, they sided with the settlers. “The U.S. government just merrily goes along funding these atrocities against American citizens, not to speak of atrocities against Palestinians who don’t happen to be American citizens,” says Palestinian American historian Rashid Khalidi. “All of this is being done with our tax dollars.”

Robert van der Hoek nam jaren geleden een schilderij mee dat hij tussen het grofvuil op de hoek van de Prinsengracht en de Reguliersgracht vond. Nu blijkt het werk afkomstig te zijn uit de geroofde kunstcollectie van de Joodse kunsthandelaar Jacques Goudstikker. Robert reed destijds langs het Amstelveld toen zijn oog op een stapel grofvuil viel. "Als Amsterdammer moet je even kijken," vertelt hij. "Ik zette mijn auto op de brug neer en zie direct dat schilderij liggen. Ik vond het een oerlelijk ding." Het doek belandde vervolgens jarenlang in zijn kelder. Daar bleef het staan, totdat Robert onlangs een artikel in De Telegraaf las over een ander teruggevonden schilderij uit de Goudstikker-collectie. Op de achterkant van dat schilderij zag hij een sticker die hem bekend voorkwam. "Er ging meteen een lampie branden", zegt hij. "En inderdaad er zat een sticker op van de collectie Goudstikker. Ik dacht: ik moet de even melden en dit moet uitgezocht worden." Via die melding kwam kunstdetective Arthur Brand in beeld. Hij onderzocht het schilderij en stelde vast dat het inderdaad afkomstig is uit de collectie van Jacques Goudstikker. De Joodse kunsthandelaar vluchtte in 1940 uit Nederland, waarna de nazi's zijn bijzondere kunstcollectie roofden. Nog altijd worden werken uit die collectie teruggevonden. Erfgenamen Voor de erfgenamen van Goudstikker is het uniek. "Ze zijn dankbaar en blij, ze kunnen het niet geloven" zegt Brand. "Eentje bij de nazaten van een hele bekende nazi. En de andere bij het grofvuil. Hoe gek wil je het hebben" Voor Robert stond één ding vast toen duidelijk werd waar het schilderij vandaan kwam. Hij besloot het zonder aarzelen terug te geven aan de erfgenamen van Goudstikker. U.S. Central Command said on Sunday the United States had struck 140 targets in Iran.
