I've built another test robot leg in the name of robotic development! I decided to experiment with using current control to make a joint that behaves like a spring, using a brushless motor with 2-stage belt reduction so it's back-drivable, and an ODrive motor controller using current limiting. However a robot with springs in it's legs will behave quite unpredictably, so we need to dampen the spring and make it complaint for it to be any use. I experimented with this by using a PID controller to drive the motor to its new position after the 'virtual spring' has stretched. The next stage will probably be to make another three legs and attach them to a frame to see of the robot is dynamically stable and compliant - with each leg returning to its home position. I'm building some robust robot torsos that I can use as a basis for lots of YouTube performances and events. The robots will be reliable, agile, robust, and transportable. I plan to make puppeteering rigs, and software/interfaces which I can plug other projects into - like vision recognition and machine learning. In this video, I've completed the mechanical build. The main chassis for the robots are made from welded steel and CNC aluminium parts. As I've got towards the ends of the arms I've used more 3D printing to keep the parts light. The shoulders are CNC aluminium plate with 3D printed spacers and mounts - this is the last bruhsless motor stage, with the elbows and second rotation axis being controlled by DC brushed motors with encoders. Next time I'll be adding some electronics so we can position the joints using both ODrive brushless motor drives, and the encoders on the other motors. ① HARDWARE/SOFTWARE What more important hardware is there in life than the clothes on your back and the cup in your hand.
