De grote zaal van Tuschinski krijgt deze zomer een flinke opknapbeurt. Daarbij keren ook delen van de oorspronkelijke art deco-schilderingen terug, die ruim honderd jaar geleden voor het eerst te zien waren toen de zaal in 1921 werd geopend. De renovatie is onderdeel van een grotere opknapbeurt van zaal 1. Alle verlichting wordt vervangen door led, er komen nieuwe stoelen en achterstallig onderhoud aan de balkons wordt aangepakt. Tegelijkertijd zijn restauratieschilders bezig om een deel van de historische decoraties terug te brengen. Met behulp van sjablonen worden de schilderingen opnieuw aangebracht, gebaseerd op het oorspronkelijke ontwerp van meer dan honderd jaar geleden. "Als het goed is, gaan we ervoor zorgen dat het lijkt alsof het er al honderd jaar zit", vertelt een van de restauratieschilders. De oorspronkelijke beschilderingen liepen ooit over de volledige onderkant van de balkons. Dat wordt nu niet volledig hersteld, mede omdat er te weinig tijd is. De nieuwe stoelen moeten nog terug de zaal in, de tapijten worden gelegd en de laatste sjabloonschilderingen worden afgewerkt. Vanaf 24 juli is de grote zaal weer open voor publiek. U.S. Central Command said on Sunday the United States had struck 140 targets in Iran. In retaliation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted U.S. military facilities across the Middle East. “U.S. CENTCOM, Central Command, and the Pentagon at large have concealed the impact of Iranian strikes, in some cases entirely,” says Jeremy Scahill, co-founder of Drop Site News, adding that “Trump has dramatically underestimated the Iranians from the very beginning.” The escalating attacks from both sides come after Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz last week and President Trump declared the ceasefire over. Iran insists that, according to the 60-day memorandum of understanding with the United States, commercial ships going through the waterway must “coordinate” their movements with Iranian authorities, which the United States has rejected. “There is no question, objectively speaking, that it’s the United States that’s been violating the terms of this agreement. It is quite explicit that Iran is supposed to have managing authority of the Strait of Hormuz,” says Scahill. Update | Nieuwe geitenhouderijen moeten voortaan op minimaal 500 meter van huizen worden gebouwd, die afstandsnorm wordt landelijk ingevoerd door het kabinet. De regering wil hiermee het risico op longontstekingen verminderen. Zembla onderzocht de gezondheidsrisico's van intensieve geitenhouderij al in 2019. Zo keken we naar het Gelderse dorp Hurwenen, waar een melkveehouder destijds alarm sloeg. Ook het RIVM waarschuwde toen al voor het verhoogde risico op longontsteking voor mensen die binnen een straal van twee kilometer van een geitenhouderij wonen. Nieuwe geitenhouderijen mogen binnenkort dus niet meer binnen 500 meter van bewoond gebied worden gevestigd. Bestaande geitenhouderijen mogen binnen die afstand ook niet uitbreiden. Het kabinet baseert dit besluit op jarenlang onderzoek van de Gezondheidsraad. Die concludeerde dat mensen die binnen 500 meter van een geitenhouderij wonen 73 procent meer kans hebben op een longontsteking dan andere Nederlanders. Tegelijkertijd onthulde NRC afgelopen weekend dat een groep wetenschappers vindt dat er onvoldoende wetenschappelijke onderbouwing is voor het onderzoek waarop het kabinet zich baseert. Vanaf zaterdag wordt er weer gekookt, gedanst en gezongen in het Nelson Mandelapark in Zuidoost, want Kwaku is weer begonnen. De komende vier weekenden is het festival te bezoeken en het lijkt een drukke editie te worden. Het park staat vol met stands met eten, drinken en ijs. De familie Tjong staat al twaalf jaar met onder andere nasi, bami en allerlei andere gerechten op Kwaku. "Voor ons is het een soort vakantie vieren. Een maand lang. Het lijkt wel een camping voor ons", vertelt standhouder Glenn Tjong. Volgebouwd Toch was de organisatie wel een uitdaging, vertelt directeur Ivette Forster. Dat kwam onder meer door prijsstijgingen en bebouwing in de omgeving. "Vroeger konden mensen hier parkeren, maar dat staat volgebouwd." Het is niet toegestaan om in de omgeving te parkeren en Forster raadt alle festivalbezoekers sterk af om met de auto naar het festival te komen. Kwaku heeft in het verleden een paar regenachtige edities gekend waarbij het bezoek tegenviel, maar voorlopig zijn de weersverwachtingen goed. Forster: "Als je geen mooi weer hebt, dan is het de vraag of je het gaat redden. Maar met dit prachtige weer kan het gewoon niet misgaan" "Zoveel culturen komen samen.
