Horchata Ingredients 260g long grain rice 80g blanched almonds 2 cinnamon sticks (plus extra for garnish) 1 star anise 1 tin (385g) evaporated milk 1 tin (320g) condensed milk 1/2 tbsp vanilla paste 1/2 tsp salt Method Add the rice, almonds, cinnamon and star anise in a large frying pan over medium/high heat. Toast, stirring often for 4-5 minutes until aromatic and lightly golden brown. Transfer to a bowl and fill with cold water until the water line reaches two knuckles from the top of the rice. Transfer the bowl to the fridge overnight to soak. The next day, blend everything (including the spices and water) on high for 2 minutes or until smooth. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve fitted with a cheese cloth. Once passed, add evaporated milk, condensed milk, vanilla and salt. Serve over ice with a cinnamon stick for garnish.

Minister Quintin weigert drone-incident in Leipzig "hybride dreiging" te noemen: "Dat was een aanval, punt aan de lijn" De verijdelde droneaanval op de luchthaven van Leipzig was een regelrechte aanval, eerder dan een "hybride dreiging". Dat zegt minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Bernard Quintin (MR) in De Afspraak op Vrijdag. "We bevinden ons in een soort van oorlog", zegt hij, al zijn er volgens hem geen concrete aanwijzingen voor een gelijkaardige aanval in ons land. "Bevindingen van onze diensten en partners duiden beiden op een Russische betrokkenheid bij de geplande en uitgevoerde en ook verijdelde hybride acties." Dat zei de Duitse minister van Binnenlandse Zaken eerder deze week, naar aanleiding van een mislukte droneaanval op een Oekraïens vrachtvliegtuig op de luchthaven van Leipzig. Daar vonden speurders onder meer een drone met een zwaar explosief. Door een defect aan de ontsteker ging dat niet af. Als reactie sloot Duitsland een Russisch consulaat en een cultureel centrum. Rusland noemde de beschuldigingen "ongefundeerd en absurd". Onze veiligheidsdiensten volgen de situatie van nabij op. Ze zullen dat blijven doen, in goede samenwerking met de veiligheidsdiensten van onze buren. "De voorbije 10 tot 15 jaar is dat onvoldoende gebeurd. Investeringen in het leger versterken ook onze inlichtingencapaciteit. Twenty-five hundred workers lost their jobs with almost no notice when a Tyson Foods beef processing plant in Joslin, Illinois, was abruptly closed on August 14. Workers, most of whom are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, are demanding Tyson increase their severance pay to at least six months of full compensation with benefits. Dozens of laid-off workers protested at the Illinois state Capitol in Springfield on Thursday, urging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to reopen the plant under state ownership and provide relief to all affected workers. Tyson also shuttered a facility in Utah, citing “historic cattle shortages” as the reason for the two closures. The 75-year low of the U.S. cattle herd is due in part to drought, the rising cost of fertilizer and diesel due to the U.S. war in Iran, and years of industry consolidation. Tyson CEO and President Donnie King made over $34 million last year, nearly 800 times more than the median Tyson worker and double the average CEO-to-worker pay ratio among S&P 500 companies.

Whether the AfD can actually govern in Saxony-Anhalt depends on whether the party either wins an absolute majority (in which case it could govern alone) or finds a coalition partner. The latter could be difficult, as all parties except the BSW have established a firewall against the AfD and say they will not form a coalition with it under any circumstances. If the AfD does end up governing, it is very likely that it would also provide the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt. Its candidate is Ulrich Siegmund. He would be the first head of government from a party officially classified as right-wing extremist at either the federal or state level in Germany. Only two other parties can currently be certain of entering the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament: the CDU and The Left (Die Linke). According to current polls, all other parties could fail to clear the 5% threshold. Forming a government without the AfD could therefore prove difficult as well, especially since the CDU and The Left are politically far apart. The CDU rejects cooperation with The Left, while The Left has indicated it would be open to such cooperation if it helped prevent the AfD from entering government. The AfD has put forward several proposals for how it would change Saxony-Anhalt if it were to govern or participate in government. For example, it plans to abolish the current public broadcasting system and replace it with a new model called “Grundfunk” (“basic broadcasting”). It also advocates stricter migration policies. A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration violated the constitutional rights of international students in seeking to deport them for their pro-Palestinian activism and criticism of Israel. The ruling is the result of a lawsuit filed by The Stanford Daily, the student newspaper at Stanford University, which claimed that some of its writers on student visas declined to report on topics related to Israel and Palestine, or requested their published articles be removed from the paper’s website, for fear of deportation.

It has a script by Charles Brackett, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was narrated by Kemp Niver. The film begins with a nod to the Academy Awards, with some fuzzy looking footage of either a Hollywood movie premiere or an Academy Award event. The script explains that the Academy has engaged in "Operation Library of Congress" to retrieve paper prints of early movies from the vaults. At 1:14, Thomas Edison is acknowledged as receiving the copyright on the first American motion picture in 1894 for "The Sneeze" (note: some sources indicate "The Blacksmith Shop" in 1893 was actually the first). Text explains how the Primrose Productions worked with AMPAS and the Library of Congress to bring back some of these early motion pictures from their paper strips. At 2:41, a paper print is opened for the first time. At 3:00, the narrator mentions that scenes to follow show the Harvard Football team, and Boston in 1904 and 1906. At 3:29, the Harvard vs Pennsylvania football game of 1903 (played at Penn) is shown; Harvard won 17-10. At 3:42, some of the earliest record if not the earliest, of a football game. Next, Riverside Park in 1904 with "Canoeing on the Charles" at 4:18. Two of the canoes are equipped with phonographs! At 4:54, a trolley ride through the streets of Boston. Paper prints of films were an early mechanism to establish the copyright of motion pictures by depositing them with the Library of Congress. Thomas Alva Edison’s company was first to register each frame of motion-picture film onto a positive paper print, in 1893. The Library of Congress processed and cataloged each of the films as one photograph, accepting thousands of paper prints of films over a twenty-year period. An unintended but fortunate side-effect is that while the actual films and negatives of this period often decayed or were destroyed, the paper prints sat ignored until the 1940s and were conserved. When this copyright deposit method ended in 1912, actual film prints were registered. Many films made before 1912 were lost forever because their original elements (for example, nitrate film) were too unstable for any lasting preservation or conservation. Paper prints, though, came with their own unpredictable nature, bringing migration challenges that rival the difficulties involved with the analog/digital conversions of today. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
