Today, we embark on another home improvement project, and not without help from some friends. Phil, Hailey, and Kevin help construct a wooden A frame with a 45 degree turn at the top. We named it "The Maim Frame" for its tendency to throw riders off the side. As it turns out, the Maim Frame is not so easy to get over. I purposely chose the slowest corner of the trail for this feature to make things more interesting, but it turned out to be a little too slow. Because of the approach, you need to take a really hard crank in a tight space to make it to the top. In the future, I'll definitely be making the approach a bit easier so that the Maim Frame can be hit with more speed. Stumpthorne (the area at the top of my yard) is going to be a training ground for building features like these. One of the challenging things about this build was the use of rot resistant hardwood, like locust. I really like it as a riding surface because it's grippy, but it's very time consuming to obtain (where I live) and expensive. In the future I'll be using locust as a riding surface, and a mixture of other lumber for framing. Corrections: 18:30: In the video, I say that Dirichlet showed that the primes are equally distributed among allowable residue classes, but this is not historically accurate. (By "allowable", here, I mean a residue class whose elements are coprime to the modulus, as described in the video). What he actually showed is that the sum of the reciprocals of all primes in a given allowable residue class diverges, which proves that there are infinitely many primes in such a sequence. Dirichlet observed this equal distribution numerically and noted this in his paper, but it wasn't until decades later that this fact was properly proved, as it required building on some of the work of Riemann in his famous 1859 paper. If I'm not mistaken, I think it wasn't until Vallée Poussin in (1899), with a version of the prime number theorem for residue classes like this, but I could be wrong there. In many ways, this was a very silly error for me to have let through. It is true that this result was proven with heavy use of complex analysis, and in fact, it's in a complex analysis lecture that I remember first learning about it. But of course, this would have to have happened after Dirichlet because it would have to have happened after Riemann! My apologies for the mistake. This is barely relevant but a reference nonetheless. I managed a 0-100 km/h of about 8.7 to 8.8 which is pretty much the same as stock. Considering the facts that I have 15 inch 195 tires, the pop ups were up, my start was horrible and that this stretch of the road isn't perfectly flat, it's pretty good and I think with the pop ups down and a better start and a perfectly flat road I could do low 8s or even high 7s. This stretch of highway is the best I could find because my country is all hills and the entire highway is full of curves and goes up and down all the time. Up to about 160 km/h (100mph) it actually goes a tiny bit uphill and then goes a bit downhill from 160 km/h to 200 km/h (125mph). So I think the car is actually a bit faster to 160 and a bit slower from 160 to 200 than you can see in the video. Why was the estate tax, which is paid by only the wealthiest two percent of Americans, repealed in 2001 with broad bipartisan support? Prof. Shapiro unravels this puzzle in this lecture by going over the origins of the anti-tax movement, the logic of referendum politics, and 1994 as a pivot point. He then hones in on the estate tax repeal as a case study, discusses tax cuts and the Republican coalition and how far the goalposts have shifted for today's U.S. tax politics. How did we get from the huge euphoria that followed the fall of communism in the early 1990s to our present politics of fear and resentment, and what are the prospects going forward? This DeVane Lecture series course entitled “Power and Politics in Today’s World” with Professor Ian Shapiro answered some of those questions. This course in the fall of 2019 was open to Yale students and the general public. Ian Shapiro is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at Yale University. He has written widely and influentially on democracy, justice, and the methods of social inquiry.
