A Stuart Beam Engine Bought Online - Part #6. Removing the Steam Chest to seal the leaking Gaskets and check the Slide Valve. The timing was way out so I set the Slide Valve in the correct position on the Valve Rod. But the Slide Valve was machined incorrectly so I machined it to the correct dimension. After doing this I then reassembled the Cylinder to test the result. I drilled a detent in the valve gear cross shaft to locate a new Grub Screw tightly. Later I drilled another two detents and changed the others also. Op initiatief van een kunstenaarscollectief gaat het gebied tussen de Dijksgracht en Piet Heinkade in het centrum worden omgetoverd tot graffitivrijplaats en buitensportplek. De plek is momenteel bezet met tentjes, afval en fietswrakken. Een grote groep dak- en thuislozen bivakkeren hier permanent. Het is een grimmige plek, donker en vies. Naar eigen zeggen komt kunstenaar Lars Brehm er niet graag. Hij zou het stukje tussen de Dijksgracht en de Piet Heinkade graag weer begaanbaar willen maken voor de Amsterdammer. Nadat hij samen met meerdere graffiti-artiesten de twee tunnelgangen naast café Hannekes Boom onder handen nam vorig jaar, besloot hij een groter plan te maken voor het gebied. Momenteel zie je er afval, fietswrakken, vuilnis en barbecues. Spullen die verzameld zijn door de groep dak- en thuislozen die er verblijven. Omwonenden zijn er niet en de horeca-gelegenheid staat al een tijdlang leeg. "Dit gebied is al sinds ik een kleine jongen ben een probleemgebied geweest", vertelt Lars Brehm van kunstplatform Amsterdam Street Art(ASA). "Dus ik denk dat het ook voor de gemeente een heel erg lastige opgave is om hier een goed werkend concept neer te zetten." Toen Brehm erachter kwam dat de horecagelegenheid leeg stond, ging hij met zijn plan naar een bevriende ondernemer van het Ambassade Hotel. Een samenwerking volgde dat resulteerde in de naam Rafel. Het Ambassade Hotel neemt de horeca voor hun rekening, Brehm met ASA het buitengebied. Momenteel wordt het pand verbouwd en komt de eerste stap voor de openbare ruimte dichterbij. Er komen panelen aan het hekwerk, waardoor er een graffitivrijplaats wordt gecreëerd. Hier kan jong en oud legaal graffiti spuiten. Maar eerst moet het gebied worden vrijgemaakt, dus moeten de daklozen verplaatsen. "We hebben brieven opgesteld in meerdere talen, de hulpinstanties geïnformeerd en uiteindelijk in gesprek met gemeente en handhaving proberen we duidelijk te maken dat dit er aan zit te komen." Op initiatief van een kunstenaarscollectief gaat het gebied tussen de Dijksgracht en Piet Heinkade in het centrum worden omgetoverd tot graffitivrijplaats en buitensportplek. De plek is momenteel bezet met tentjes, afval en fietswrakken. Een grote groep dak- en thuislozen bivakkeren hier permanent. Het is een grimmige plek, donker en vies. Naar eigen zeggen komt kunstenaar Lars Brehm er niet graag. Hij zou het stukje tussen de Dijksgracht en de Piet Heinkade graag weer begaanbaar willen maken voor de Amsterdammer. Nadat hij samen met meerdere graffiti-artiesten de twee tunnelgangen naast café Hannekes Boom onder handen nam vorig jaar, besloot hij een groter plan te maken voor het gebied. Momenteel zie je er afval, fietswrakken, vuilnis en barbecues. Spullen die verzameld zijn door de groep dak- en thuislozen die er verblijven. Omwonenden zijn er niet en de horeca-gelegenheid staat al een tijdlang leeg. "Dit gebied is al sinds ik een kleine jongen ben een probleemgebied geweest", vertelt Lars Brehm van kunstplatform Amsterdam Street Art(ASA). "Dus ik denk dat het ook voor de gemeente een heel erg lastige opgave is om hier een goed werkend concept neer te zetten." Toen Brehm erachter kwam dat de horecagelegenheid leeg stond, ging hij met zijn plan naar een bevriende ondernemer van het Ambassade Hotel. Een samenwerking volgde dat resulteerde in de naam Rafel. Het Ambassade Hotel neemt de horeca voor hun rekening, Brehm met ASA het buitengebied. Momenteel wordt het pand verbouwd en komt de eerste stap voor de openbare ruimte dichterbij. Er komen panelen aan het hekwerk, waardoor er een graffitivrijplaats wordt gecreëerd. Hier kan jong en oud legaal graffiti spuiten. Maar eerst moet het gebied worden vrijgemaakt, dus moeten de daklozen verplaatsen. "We hebben brieven opgesteld in meerdere talen, de hulpinstanties geïnformeerd en uiteindelijk in gesprek met gemeente en handhaving proberen we duidelijk te maken dat dit er aan zit te komen." 520 sociale huurwoningen op tijdelijke grond, gebouwd in minder dan drie jaar. Brasa Village in Zuidoost laat zien dat woningbouw sneller kan. Maar de echte versnelling zit niet alleen in het maken van woningen in de fabriek. In Bouw Woon Leef onderzoeken we hoe samenwerking en een slimmer planproces het verschil maken. "De bouwtijd is vaak helemaal niet het probleem", zegt innovatieadviseur Marjet Rutte. "De tijd zit in het voorbereidingsstuk." Tussen de eerste plannen en de oplevering van een woning zit nu vaak nog zeven tot vijftien jaar. Bij Brasa Village pakten ze dat anders aan. Gemeente, woningcorporaties, architecten én bouwers zaten vanaf de eerste schets samen aan tafel. "Het ontwerpproces duurde zes maanden. Normaal gesproken doe je daar drie jaar over", vertelt Alice Holmans-Zoer van de gemeente Amsterdam. "Als we de woningnood willen oplossen en sneller willen bouwen, dan moet het wel op deze manier", vult Charlotte Schulte aan. Het resultaat: 520 woningen die in minder dan drie jaar zijn gerealiseerd. Amsterdam wil deze aanpak verder opschalen en de komende jaren nog eens 1.500 flexwoningen realiseren. Een containertje met een deurtje In de Rosmolenbuurt in Zaandam zijn fabriekswoningen nauwelijks van traditionele nieuwbouw te onderscheiden. Ze sluiten naadloos aan op de bestaande arbeiderswijk én blijven hier gewoon permanent staan. "Wij architecten moeten de techneuten uitdagen om flexibeler te worden", zegt architect Jurgen van der Ploeg. Want snel bouwen hoeft volgens hem helemaal niet ten koste te gaan van de uitstraling. Toch hebben mensen vaak nog een vooroordeel als aankomt op woningen uit een fabriek. Op straat denken veel mensen al snel aan "een containertje met een deurtje en een keukentje". Of ze vrezen dat "alles vierkant wordt". Maar tegenwoordig kan er dus veel meer! Slimmer samenwerken Om sneller woningen te realiseren worden ook steeds vaker digitale modellen ingezet, zodat gemeenten, bewoners en ontwikkelaars al vroeg kunnen zien wat er gebouwd wordt en sneller knopen kunnen doorhakken. Zij onderzoekt de verbinding tussen darm en brein, via de lange, grote zenuwbanen die beide belangrijke organen met elkaar verbinden. Dat doet ze met microfluïde chips, een soort mini-petrischaaltjes waarop ze mini-hersenen en mini-darmen kweekt, en die ze vervolgens met elkaar verbindt door zelfgroeiende mini-zenuwbaantjes. Bijna een soort proto-mini-mensje op kweek. The development of permanent signs and symbols became crucial for communication and survival. Printing is one of the most astounding stories in human history and is the origin of almost every resource essential for man's well-being. 2:34 Carved Stone (Epigraphica): One of the oldest means of "printing" was carved stone or epigraphica. Examples include Egyptian hieroglyphics (meaning "sacred carving") and the gigantic writing on the Rock of Behistun commissioned by Darius, King of Persia. 3:12 Another early form of printing was by seals—wedge-shaped instruments pressed onto soft clay or wax. This method of printing was called cuneiform and was used for thousands of years. 3:34 Writing is older than the book, done on bark, shells, animal skins, and stone, using inks made from berries and sea creatures. This became known as India ink. 5:28: At the end of the 4th century, Orientals achieved a means of printing from wood blocks engraved in relief. The block was inked, fine paper was laid over it and rubbed, producing an impression. The oldest known book of this type is a Buddhist text, the Diamond Sutra, dating back to the 9th century. 7:22: After the fall of the Roman Empire, printing was preserved by monks and scholars in monasteries. 8:10: The Renaissance brought significant developments. In 1450, German printer Johann Gutenberg of Mainz produced a Bible of "technical excellence." His major invention, honoring him as the father of printing, was the printing press composed with movable metal type called typography. 8:49: Gutenberg's key idea was to use cast metal letters. He used a durable, rapidly cooling compound of tin, lead, and antimony. 9:43: Gutenberg adapted a wooden wine press for printing. 10:20: The Gutenberg Bible was printed in Latin. The invention of typography spread rapidly across Europe. 11:32: The Industrial Revolution in the mid-17th century demanded a faster printing process. 12:22: Benjamin Franklin, honored as the father of American printing. 12:48: The Times of London employed the first metal press, built by Friedrich Koenig (1810). This was followed by the Albion hand press (Richard Cop, 1820). The first metal press in America was the famous 1838 Columbian (John Clymer, Philadelphia). 13:54: William Morris (English artist) invented the Mars press, which transformed the crude manuscript book and strongly influenced book design, allowing for the first time the production of beautiful books of quality. 14:31: The first successful typesetting machine was the Simplex Linotype, invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler. 15:40: The Linotype eliminated the redistribution problem since the used type could simply be remelted. The invention sparked the teletypesetter. 16:24: On the modern rotary press, the cast plate is mounted around a drum or cylinder. The Copley Press's four-story-high Goss rotary press, can print up to 25,000 pages an hour. 16:51: The age of automation has advanced the industry. In a modern newsroom, typed copy is fed into a computer for proofing and monitoring over a television screen before being photographed to produce the final plate. The Data Speed 40 can print over 6,000 characters per minute. 18:29: The fastest growing counterpart to newspaper printing is offset lithography (or photo offset). 19:20: The final phase of printing is photogravure, a modern offshoot of old copperplate engravings, used to produce paper money and postage stamps. 20:02: Printing is both an art and a science, holding the potential for creativity to provide a better world for all mankind.
