Automobilisten op de A9 kregen gisteravond de schrik van hun leven toen een kudde van twaalf paarden in tegengestelde richting de snelweg op rende. De paarden stonden eerder in een weiland naast de snelweg. Eén van de paarden kreeg het hek van het weiland open, waarna de kudde ervandoor ging.

In the occupied West Bank, two Palestinian teenagers were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers Wednesday as settlers and troops entered the village of al-Mughayyir. The victims were identified as 19-year-old Omar al-Naasan and 16-year-old Khalil Shehadeh. Eyewitnesses say snipers opened fire after Palestinian residents confronted settlers who were stealing their sheep. Meanwhile, Israel has razed the Palestinian village of Khirbet al-Tabban in the Masafer Yatta region, after ordering residents to evacuate their homes. Israel's military had declared the area a restricted military training zone — even though settlers have been establishing outposts and farms in the area. According to B'Tselem, Israel has expelled 66 Palestinian communities from their homes since October 2023.

Door de aangekondigde ov-staking van komende woensdag zal Noord 24 uur lang heel moeilijk bereikbaar zijn. Anders dan bij andere stakingen doen deze keer namelijk ook de pontschippers mee. De gemeente roept mensen op thuis te werken, maar horeca in Noord en een basisschool in West hebben zelf iets geregeld waardoor medewerkers en klanten toch naar de overkant kunnen: ze gaan zelf varen. Basisschool de Zeeheld in West kwam in actie om ervoor te zorgen dat de leerlingen toch op school en weer thuis kunnen komen. "Een van de ouders is eigenaar van Canal Motorboats, dus ik heb contact met hem opgenomen om te kijken of we wat konden regelen", vertelt directeur Nadine Duymaer van Twist. "Er zijn zeven leraren die uit Noord moeten komen, en als dat niet lukt kunnen we sommige lessen niet geven of moeten we klassen verdelen." Een groep mensen staat op de blauw-witte veerboot IJveer 55 in Amsterdam terwijl deze de kade binnenvaart. Sommige mensen hebben fietsen bij zich, en op een bord achter hen staat dat roken verboden is. Op de achtergrond zijn water en een groot gebouw te z Inmiddels hebben ook leerlingen zelf zich aangemeld om mee te gaan op het geïmproviseerde pontje en willen omliggende scholen ook meedoen. "We hebben een boot waar veertig mensen op kunnen", aldus Duymaer van Twist. Ze benadrukt wel dat ze het belang van de staking volledig inziet. "Maar we moeten de kinderen wel naar school kunnen laten gaan." Ook Daan Meeuwig, eigenaar van restaurant Barracuda, kwam met een eigen oplossing in de vorm van een Zwitsers salonschip. "Je kan niet echt naar Barracuda komen door de staking", vertelt Meeuwig. "Maar stiekem speelde ik al langer met dit idee, omdat er helemaal geen pontje naar het Hamerkwartier gaat." Ook omliggende restaurants doen mee met het initiatief. "Het lijkt mij heel leuk als dit een blijvertje wordt. Alle reacties zijn ook heel enthousiast." Ondanks de onhandige situaties die bij de staking komen kijken, kijkt Meeuwig er ook naar uit: "Misschien wordt dit wel de leukste dag in plaats van de stomste dag." Havenbeheerder Port of Amsterdam raadt mensen af om zelf de oversteek over het IJ te gaan maken. "Het mag wel, maar je steekt in feite gewoon een snelweg over", vertelt een woordvoerder van het havenbedrijf. "En als je dan denkt: ik ga het toch doen, houd je dan in ieder geval aan de vaarregels en zorg dat je goed om je heen kijkt. De grachten van de stad worden deze week extra gecontroleerd en schoongemaakt voor de City Swim van aanstaande zondag. Schippers van Waternet halen onder meer fietsen en ander afval uit het water langs de zwemroute die vanaf de Keizersgracht naar het Marineterrein loopt. Alles om ervoor te zorgen dat de meer dan 3000 deelnemers veilig door de grachten kunnen zwemmen voor het goede doel. Het schoonmaken van de grachten is precisiewerk. Met een baggerboot varen Willem Pranger en Jefrrey Klockenbrink van Waternet over de route die zondag door de deelnemers wordt gezwommen. Met behulp van sonar wordt de bodem afgezocht naar fietsen, winkelwagentjes of andere scherpe voorwerpen. "Mijn maat heeft een sonar en ik hoor wat hij zegt: links, rechts of naar voren", legt Pranger uit. Hij zit aan het stuur van een grijper waarmee afval uit het water wordt gehaald. "Hij ziet van alles wat er op de grond ligt." Geluksdag De vangst in de Keizersgracht bij de start van de City Swim valt woensdagmorgen enigszins tegen. "Het is echt een geluksdag", zegt schipper Klockenbrink. "We zijn van de week al een paar keer over de route gevaren. Dat houdt in dat er na ons niks meer in is gegooid, dus ja, positief bericht." Op een verroeste stadsfiets, flink wat stenen, een autoband en een kinderfiets na blijft de container die aan het baggerschip bevestigd zit leeg. Volgens Pranger is dat normaal wel anders: "Dan liggen de grachten vol met fietsen en andere troep." Het leegvissen van de grachten is dan zelfs een ware attractie voor veel toeristen. Volgens wethouder Lian Heinhuis (Afval & Reiniging) is het onvermijdelijk dat er afval in de grachten blijft liggen. "En laten we ook eerlijk zijn, het hoort ook een beetje bij deze stad", zegt ze vanaf het baggerschip in de Keizersgracht. Toch wil de wethouder kijken hoe ervoor gezorgd kan worden dat er minder fietsen in het water belanden. "Wat ik net ook begrijp, is dat bijvoorbeeld Swapfietsen relatief vaak in de grachten belanden. Daar denk ik wel van: kunnen we eens kijken wat daar aan de hand is?" Zwemmen voor het goede doel Ruim 3.300 deelnemers doen zondag mee aan de City Swim in de grachten. Met het evenement wordt geld opgehaald voor onderzoek en behandeling van de ziekte ALS. Deelnemers kunnen kiezen uit verschillende afstanden. Aan de zwemtocht doen ook Nederlandse topzwemmers en bekende Nederlanders mee. Omstreeks 17.00 uur wordt zondag de voorlopige opbrengst bekend gemaakt op het Marineterrein.
