The television channel M1 is part of Hungary’s public broadcasting system. For years, the channel was seen as a mouthpiece for then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his government. His successor, Peter Magyar, had promised during the election campaign to restore media independence. On July 7, an unusual moment unfolded on Hungarian television: M1 interrupted its programming completely. Instead of news or shows, viewers saw only a black screen with a clear message: “Public media must not lie. We apologize for having done so, for many years. Public media is now being restructured so that it will be independent and credible in the future. News broadcasting is temporarily suspended. Please stay with us!” Magyar described the day on Facebook as “historic,” writing that the era of propaganda in public media was over. Orbán, meanwhile, reacted angrily to the public apology, saying that people “interested in the truth” should switch to another channel instead. According to the state media umbrella organization MTVA, M1 resumed broadcasting later that same evening. News programs, however, initially remained off air. They are expected to return gradually once a new editorial team has begun its work. The new government is also reshaping the media landscape more broadly. State advertising contracts have been stopped completely. For many private media companies owned by businesspeople close to Orbán, this has had noticeable consequences: some have had to significantly scale back their operations, while others have shut down entirely. President Donald Trump has declared the ceasefire with Iran "over" and resumed attacks on the country. Analyst Trita Parsi says this latest exchange of fire is "much worse" than previous rounds and makes reaching a lasting peace more difficult.

De gemiddelde Gen Z'er kent niet anders: Pride, het huwelijk voor paren van gelijk geslacht en queer cafés. Maar niet eens zo lang geleden was dat alles lang niet vanzelfsprekend. In de Nieuwe Kerk opent vandaag de tentoonstelling Queer Amsterdam, over de roze geschiedenis van onze stad. En die begint vroeger dan je misschien denkt. Nee, we zullen hier niet de gehele vierhonderd jaar queer geschiedenis die in De Nieuwe Kerk wordt getoond behandelen, maar ter illustratie beginnen we even in 1632. In de kerk aan De Dam trouwen dan Hilletje Jans en Willem Adriaensz. Enkele jaren daarvoor heeft de bruidegom ervoor gekozen om niet langer als Barbara, maar als Willem door het leven te gaan. Als dit aan het licht komt, wordt het huwelijk niet alleen ontbonden, maar wordt Adriaensz ook voor 24 jaar uit Amsterdam verbannen. Een tentoonstelling over vierhonderd jaar queer geschiedenis samenstellen is nog niet eenvoudig. De ondertrouwakte van bovenstaand huwelijk is bewaard gebleven, maar dat is dan ook direct een van de weinige objecten uit die periode. De queer geschiedenis is er een van noodgedwongen verborgenheid; de gemeenschap opereerde eeuwenlang in de schaduw, uit angst voor de gevolgen van geldende wetten, normen en tradities. Zo diende de galerij van het huidige Paleis op de Dam in de 18e eeuw als stiekeme 'kruysplaats', oftewel cruiseplek, waar mannen via kuch- en snuifgeluidjes peilden of de ander zin in had contact. Vrouwen communiceerden via zogenaamde 'vriendinnenboekjes', vertelt curator Hélène Webers. "Daarvoor gebruikten ze codetaal. Soms plakten vrouwen ook een viooltje op de borst. Daarmee maakten ze duidelijk dat ze op vrouwen vielen, zonder daar expliciet voor uit te komen." Uiltje Als Bet van Beeren in 1927 Café 't Mandje aan de Zeedijk opent, houden veel queer Amsterdammers hun homoseksualiteit nog noodgedwongen verborgen. "Zoenen was in het café verboden, handen vasthouden mocht wel", zegt Monique Doppert, auteur van het boek 'Een roze geschiedenis van Amsterdam'. In het café stond een porseleinen uiltje met een lampje erin, dat Van Beeren aan knipte wanneer er volk binnenkwam dat ze niet vertrouwde of dat wel eens van de politie kon zijn. "Het moest allemaal anoniem en onzichtbaar blijven", vertelt Doppert. "Pas in de jaren zestig zie je dat er meer foto's en video's beschikbaar worden." Flirten en feest Zo verscheen in 1964 Brenno Premsela als eerste herkenbare, homoseksuele man op tv, als voorzitter van de Vereniging van Homofielen COC. In de tentoonstelling wordt dit weergegeven via het portret '1964 Broadcast' van Erwin Olaf. Doppert: "Iedereen had het er de volgende dag over: heb je dat gisteren gezien, er was een homo op tv!'" De groeiende zichtbaarheid maakt de weg vrij voor bredere emancipatie. Naast de verhalen van strijd en emancipatie, is er in de tentoonstelling ook plek voor verhalen over liefde, flirten en feesten. Zo is er de deurbel van de iconische club Roxy, waar bezoekers zelf ook even mogen aanbellen. "Vroeger kwam ik hier niet altijd binnen hoor", zegt Doppert, die goede herinneringen heeft aan de in 1999 afgebrande club. "Wat gebeurde hier niet? De bankjes in de lobby waren beroemd vanwege de eerste kus met je nieuwe flirt, het was een hele wilde plek." En met wie Doppert daar allemaal geflirt heeft? "Dat ga ik natuurlijk niet vertellen!" This latest death comes exactly six months after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis under similar circumstances.
