We dissect the origins of the Hebrew Bible (also called the Old Testament by Christians), excavating the deepest layers of the collection of holy books, including the very ancient songs and prayers that were likely passed on orally for centuries before being written down, the scholarly theories of the lost documents that were stitched together to form Genesis and Exodus, and the differing points of view of the various prophets, scribes, and propagandists whose books made their way into the Hebrew canon. Through this excavation, we discover a Bible comprising many voices, many facets, and many hidden meanings. We consider how best to understand the origins of the laws and customs of the Jewish people, or what we call "Judaism." We begin by dispelling the notion that Judaism (or any other belief system apart from Christianity) can properly be called a "religion" -- a category that derives originally from Christian practice and does not make sense anywhere else. We further examine the roots of the idea of "Judaism" as a concept for the Jewish way of life, concluding with a careful analysis of the meaning of the ancient Greek word "ioudaismos," which originates in the Book of Maccabees. Finally, we trace the best possible explanation for the origins of the Jewish people in the Bronze-Age Near East, using archaeological evidence including an ancient Egyptian monument and the vandalized ruins of Canaanite temples. Ultimately, we should be able to understand Judaism and its God as the creations of a particular Middle Eastern people not entirely unlike their ancient neighbors. The math of superposition and quantum states. Minutephysics channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/minutephysics Help fund future projects: https://www.patreon.com/3blue1brown This video was sponsored by Brilliant: https://brilliant.org/3b1b An equally valuable form of support is to simply share some of the videos. Special thanks to these supporters: http://3b1b.co/light-quantum-thanks Huge thanks to my friend Evan Miyazono, both for encouraging me to do this project, and for helping me understand many things along the way. This is a simple primer for how the math of quantum mechanics, specifically in the context of polarized light, relates to the math of classical waves, specifically classical electromagnetic waves. I will say, if you *do* want to go off and learn the math of quantum mechanics, you just can never have too much linear algebra, so check out the series I did at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZHQObOWTQDPD3MizzM2xVFitgF8hE_ab Mistakes: As several astute commenters have pointed out, the force arrow is pointing the wrong way at 2:18. Thanks for the catch! *Note on conventions: Throughout this video, I use a single-headed right arrow to represent the horizontal direction. The standard in quantum mechanics is actually to use double-headed arrows for describing polarization states, while single-headed arrows are typically reserved for the context of spin. What's the difference? Well, using a double-headed arrow to represent the horizontal direction emphasizes that in a quantum mechanical context, there's no distinction between left and right. They each have the same measurable state: horizontal (e.g. they pass through horizontally oriented filters). Once you're in QM, these kets are typically vectors in a more abstract space where vectors are not necessarily spatial directions but instead represent any kind of state. Because of how I chose to motivate things with classical waves, where it makes sense for this arrow to represent a unit vector in the right direction, rather than the more abstract idea of a horizontal state vector, I chose to stick with the single-headed notation throughout, though this runs slightly against convention. 2,500 years ago, fearsome warriors roamed the plains of Siberia. Feared, loathed, admired – but over time forgotten… Until now. This major exhibition explores the story of the Scythians – nomadic tribes and masters of mounted warfare, who flourished between 900 and 200 BC. Their encounters with the Greeks, Assyrians and Persians were written into history but for centuries all trace of their culture was lost – buried beneath the ice. Explore their lost world and discover the splendour, the sophistication and the sheer power of the mysterious Scythians. But some people claimed they caused them headaches. In this video, I explore the reason that fluorescent light can indeed cause headaches or eyestrain in sensitive people, and I explain why that wasn't an issue with the CFL. Then we explore the modern LED bulb and how it actually is bringing the cause of this flicker back. I had lost power for a bit due to Irma and once I got bored with restringing my guitars, I decided to make a Eurorack module featuring the AI wonders of Alexa. It crashes when you ask it the weather, and to my disappointment, due to most of Alexa's features being server-side, I was unable to get her to trigger gates or CV via the board's GPIO. So this is what I was left with. I'd put a tutorial up, but honestly with the Echo Dot costing $40 on sale and having a 3.5mm jack, you'd probably spend more on parts if you DIY'd it. Regardless, if you DO want to make your own Echo, here's the git: https://github.com/alexa/

It is often taught in class and even appears in textbooks. I try to explain why this myth came to be and I offer a potential solution. Yes, you read right. Super Play Magazine. The Independent Super Nintendo Magazine for the UK which ran between 1992 and 1996 has landed back on our shores, albeit in a one off special to celebrate the SNES Mini in style. Bundled along with Retro Gamer (load 172), this is actually quite a nice one off, which re-reviews each game on the console once again (as well as reviewing Star Fox 2 for the first time). I wanted to keep this under the 5 minute mark, but it would be doing the Control Forge a major injustice. I feel like it would take a feature film to entirely explore the capabilities of this module. http://www.rossum-electro.com/products/control_forge/
In the final episode of the series, Hannah and Monique discuss their thoughts on the effectiveness of the conservation project as a whole. Dr Diego Tamburini also shares some of the findings from the dye analysis. You can watch the entire series here: https://goo.gl/v5UqFE This embroidery dates from China’s Tang dynasty (AD 618–907). It depicts the Buddha preaching at Vulture Peak – in Buddhist tradition a favourite retreat of the Buddha and his disciples, located in what is now north-east India. The tapestry is part of a collection donated to the British Museum by the archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein (1862–1943). You can find more information in the collection online here: http://www.britishmuseum.org/research...
Game storage should never be overlooked. Whether you're into game storage towers or boxes, they're essential for any retro game collector. For me, they're also incredibly evocative and bring to mind a flurry of 80s and 90s gaming moments. These little striped boxes for storing cassettes, or cartridge caddys for the Sega Mega Drive were the treasure troves of gaming; the place where gaming started, and indeed, finished. It's for that reason I've made a video on the subject. Join me. Smoke a pipe, do whatever you normally do. Our Instagram: www.instagram.com/yestheory Alright guys, we've been uploading 2 videos a week for about 8 months in a row now. It's been a crazy ride to sustain since many of our videos take several days to film, but it's been an incredible ride. Our goal is to INCREASE the number of videos we post on this channel with a TON new ideas. The problem is we don't have time to plan out these new ideas right now and we also don't have the editing resources to handle the production value we want to accomplish. SO, we are scaling back to 1 weekly video on Sundays for about 4-6 weeks until we create a sustainable system.. then we'll eventually start scaling up to 2-3 and then potentially more... Lot's of exciting things ahead and we're glad you're coming along with us. NOW, we're also SO hyped to release 5 Project 30 episodes a week from Monday-Friday on Instagram. They're made to be watched on your phone so Instagram was the perfect home for these episodes. A prime number "gift" from a mathematicians leaving his college. More links & stuff in full description below ↓↓↓ Featuring Tadashi Tokieda. More Tadashi: http://bit.ly/tadashi_vids Professor McKee explains: "Most of the digits of p were fixed so that: (i) the top two thirds made the desired pattern; (ii) the bottom third ensured that p-1 had a nice large (composite) factor F with the factorisation of F known. Numbers of this shape can easily be checked for primality. A small number of digits (you can see which!) were looped over until p was found that was prime." Animation and editing by Pete McPartlan.
