In the last video we reviewed some mountain biking products, and I showed you where my Fox Digit glove was coming apart at the seam. Like my gloves, all these products are made of fabric and thread. They’re also expensive to replace. But you can squeeze a little more life out of your gear if you know how to fix it. Luckily, Park makes a bike tool for everything. This kit is made for routing cables internally, and this dummy hub lets you service a drivetrain while the rear wheel is off. They must have something for repairing gloves. I'm a part owner of Clik. We make better, easier valves, backwards compatible with Presta. https://clikvalve.com Get Early Videos & Behind the Scenes! 🚲 http://bermpeak.substack.com Alright, I got this covered. Every drug store on the planet carries sewing kits, and today I’m getting the nicest one in the store for $5.49. Park, if you’re watching this I forgive you for not making sewing kits. In fact, I think I can make my own. Well, at least I got the blue right. This is the CSK-1, Cycling Sewing Kit. Although I’m totally unqualified to teach you anything about sewing, I know enough to fix this glove. On almost any textile the seams are on the inside. By turning this glove inside out, we can see where it’s coming apart, and what it’s supposed to look like. In our CSK-1, we have needles, thread, a thimble, totally useless scissors, and even some spare parts. I could use black thread to match the glove, but bright orange is easier to see on video. Cut a nice length of thread, and put it through the eye of your needle. This takes some practice, and it’s easiest if you have a clean cut on the end of your thread. Pull your thread through so the two ends meet up with each other. Now for a sewing knot. Just loop the thread around your finger, roll it, and pull it into this messy gob. Now to repair this seam. I’m just going to use the undamaged part of the glove as a template, and try to mimic the seam the same distance from the edge. This is pretty tough material, so I’m relying on the table or the thimble to push the needle through. I lack consistency, proper technique, and experience, but still this seam is coming together nicely. Alright time tie this up. Go ahead, laugh at my uneven stitches. We’ll see who’s laughing when I turn this glove back around. And it’s fixed. It’ll be interesting to see how long this lasts, considering the original seam came apart after a month. If it does break again, I’ll bust out my CSK-1 and sew it back together. Here you can see the hip pouch on my my hydration pack is torn in the middle, not on a seam. A good way to mend this would be to sew a patch over it, but because it’s stretchy I’m just going to close the wound. Even in this case, I’m putting the seam on the inside so it’s not as vulnerable or ugly. It ain’t pretty, but we stopped it from tearing anymore. So that’s it. To call this basic sewing is being generous, but it’s enough to get you by when you’re on the road, or don’t have the funds to buy new stuff. I think sewing is a skill that every outdoor enthusiast should know, but what do you guys think? How many of you already repair your own gear? Probably a lot. Do you think Park should make a sewing kit? They make a Pizza cutter. Talk about it in the comments. Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time.

Here's my version of the iconic character from Rick and Morty, the butter delivery robot! He's made from aluminum, brass, and stainless steel, and is proportioned to match the butter bot of the cartoon. (which actually mean's he's really short!) This video shows the entire design and build process, from a screen grab of the cartoon to the finished metal robot himself, and all of the CAD, machining, cutting, grinding, turning, and 3D printing in between. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what I did wrong in the comments! I'm pretty new to most of the metalworking techniques shown and I'd love some feedback if I'm portraying anything badly. And before you say it, yes, that was the best way to mount the cutter in the lathe at the time! It looks pretty bad... It's time to search through some old video tapes. Namely these ones, which I've had in a bag since sometime in the 1990s. You could call it a VHS collection, but if so, then it's a pretty poor one. Each of these VHS tapes is it's own time capsule into the past. What will we find on these magnetic mechanical wonders? I can guarantee it's various 90s TV Shows....Perhaps some lost footage of Craig Charles on Cyber Zone (don't get your hopes up). Maybe some footage of the National Lottery in 1997 (more likely). What I can tell you for sure, is that; 1) I recorded a lot of crap in the 90s. 2) I've almost definitely recorded over some absolute gold television, and for that I'm sorry. 3) I recorded a lot of crap in the 90s. D4A Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/d4a Finally its time for a teardown of the junkyard 4a-ge engine I bought a few days ago. In this video I also cover some of the 4age engine family basics, and how the engines are different and categorized. I talk about bigports, smallports, redtop, bluetop, 16v and 20v and all the other 4age realted stuff. Unfortunately the junkyard 4age engine turns out to be a total piece of junk. Came from the junkyard. I should have known. Its rod bearings are ruined beyond belief. In the videos to come I will be dropping the engine from my MR2 and actually work on fixing that one. The junkyard 4age still wasn't such a failure because I did get a working distributor, wiring harness, cylinder head, ECU and some other bits with it. Stay tuned for more fun stuff to come. The numbers I use are based on Planck 2013 data. Data from the 2015 release exists but I chose the 2013 data since the precise calculation of the size of the universe has only been done explicitly in that case as per this paper: http://www.isaacpub.org/images/PaperPDF/AdAp_100039_2016122914005354452.pdf 2. Near the start I say I’m only considering fundamental particles with mass, and not, say, photons. Actually, I don’t count neutrinos either since they too are relativistic, and the precise results are model dependent to an extent. 3 (later addendum). Well done to anyone who spotted the fact that the 75:25% split between H and He ought to be by mass, and not by number of atoms, as in the video. I realised this mistake lying in bed on the night the video was released and kicked myself repeatedly! Very annoying. Anyway, correcting for this, we see that there actually ought to be 12 H atoms for each He atom, since the atom mass of He is 4, and the total atomic mass of 12 H atoms is 12=3x4. Following the same sort of logic as in the video, we find that there are 62=12x4+14 particles for 16=12+4 baryons. Thats means we should have multiplied by 62/16 rather than 26/7, and so our result should be corrected by a factor of 1.04, yielding closer to 3.4 x 10^80 particles. [Of course, no-one really worries about factors of 1.04 in cosmology :)]. The time to the "apocalyptic” end mentioned later in the video then changes by 3 to 4 years, which is anyway well within the rounding errors of the calculation.

How hard is it to find a 256-bit hash just by guessing and checking? Help fund future projects: https://www.patreon.com/3blue1brown An equally valuable form of support is to simply share some of the videos. Home page: https://www.3blue1brown.com/ Several people have commented about how 2^256 would be the maximum number of attempts, not the average. This depends on the thing being attempted. If it's guessing a private key, you are correct, but for something like guessing which input to a hash function gives the desired output (as in bitcoin mining, for example), which is the kind of thing I had in mind here, 2^256 would indeed be the average number of attempts needed, at least for a true cryptographic hash function. Think of rolling a die until you get a 6, how many rolls do you need to make, on average? This week we join Jane Portal, Keeper of the Department of Asia at the British Museum, as she explains the history and rediscovery of the Vulture Peak embroidery – one of the most magnificent of all the compositions found in the hidden library at Dunhuang. This embroidery dates from China’s Tang dynasty (AD 618–907). It depicts the Buddha preaching at Vulture Peak – in Buddhist tradition a favourite retreat of the Buddha and his disciples, located in what is now north-east India. It was discovered by archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein (1862–1943) who, while exploring the many caves at Dunhuang, discovered a walled up cave. Behind this wall was a library full of manuscripts paintings and textiles, including this astonishing embroidery. Watch the rest of the ‘Conserving Vulture Peak’ series here: https://goo.gl/FXoBK2 The tapestry is part of a collection donated to the British Museum by the archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein (1862–1943). They’re the duo behind IFHT, and the wildly popular “how to be” series, in which they break down how to be a mountain biker, how to be a road biker, and how to be a Canadian, just to name a few. Despite the lighthearted nature of their videos, Matt and Jason are serious filmmakers. This meant Brian and I would be spending some time behind a very revealing lens. They say the camera adds ten pounds, but that’s a pretty conservative figure when you’re carrying around a Red. Recently I actually reduced my technological overhead and got a high quality point and shoot for $1000. This wouldn’t even buy you a memory card for a Red. It probably wouldn’t even get you a charger. The Red Raven is a full fledged cinema camera, which Matt and Jason lug around everywhere. But that’s not the half of it, because using a Red requires a stockpile of other crap. First of all you have the camera, huge lenses, proprietary memory cards, audio equipment, cables, straps, connectors, and like three car batteries to power it. Then you need a tripod fit for a telescope. Just in case, Matt and Jason also carry a Canon 5D, which is still bigger (and more costly) than all my cameras combined. Add lenses for that, food, water, a GoPro and tools, and you’ve got some serious monkeys on your back. By my calculations this comes to approximately 1 million pounds of gear, which is 453,592 kilograms if you live anywhere besides the US. For guys who only only ride park, Matt and Jason sure do a lot a climbing with all that gear. Our climb was a beautiful, gradual ascent up Galbraith mountain full of opportunities for shots. Each time, they had to unpack, set up, boot up, and hit that big red record button. At the top, we sessioned a few rock features off the fire road. Matt and Jason have their tables dialed, and it makes me want to work on my tricks again. Maybe I’ll do that in a future video. We headed to the first downhill trail, and I got a taste of what Bellingham is all about. Truth be told, I would have been happy riding this first section all day, but we had—important things to do. It’s pretty common to have a post ride beer, but at the summit? I wouldn’t want to do that before riding down this. Bellingham is only an hour or so from Vancouver, so Galbraith has a lot of authentic North Shore features. These wooden obstacles are built entirely from trees cleared while building the trails, so the planks, joists, and pillars are all milled with chainsaws. To me it looks like art, created by Ewoks. Since we were all riding these trails blind, we stopped a lot to re-ride features and get shots. There are so many line choices at Galbraith that it’s easy to miss the good stuff. We also stopped by this vista to film interviews. That’s when I got to play around with the Red. Bellingham totally blew our minds, and we didn’t even scratch the surface of one trail system. Maybe it was luck, or maybe everything there is as good as what we rode that day. Bellingham is also a cool town with good stuff to eat. That night, Brian and I would cross the Canadian border and make our way towards Whistler, but some of the best parts of the trip were already behind us.

Afraid it might be rod knock? Here's how to check it out. Whether it's a knocking noise inside your engine or a clicking one or whatever else, the only truly foolproof way of checking for rod knock is taking a direct look at your rods and rod bearings. To do that you need to remove your oil pan. Removing the oil pan is easy. In the case of my MR2 mk1 all you need to do is get the exhaust out of the way and unbolt the oil pan. After that remove the oil strainer and you can take a look at your rods and rod bearings. Shake the rods a bit. If they feel loose that is very bad and everything needs to come out. In my case the rods were rock solid but once I removed my bearings I noticed some very alarming things and confirmed that my engine unfortunately did develop rod knock. I just got caught it pretty early. Rod 1 looked best, rod 4 worst, to me it seems like it's an oiling issue, although my oil pressure was good the needle on the manual oil pressure gauge was pretty bouncy. So what now? Another rebuild. I'll drop this engine soon and get it fixed using a junkyard 4age engine I just got. Time to get dirty again.
