Next Video: https://youtu.be/tV4iSISr-OQ I spent the weekend in Hot Springs, Arkansas to see what they were working on. In addition to existing IMBA Epic trail systems, trails are being staked out all over the downtown area for convenient access. With great scenery, lots of stuff to ride, and lots of stuff to eat, Hot Springs is poised to become a major hot spot for mountain biking. - I’m going to try, as best I can, to give you guys some context so you understand what’s going on here. In November I attended IMBA World Summit in Bentonville Arkansas. Right downtown there were flow trails, jump parks, and greenways connecting everything together. This infrastructure didn’t appear randomly; it was actually an intentional and focused effort to boost tourism through mountain biking. Well anyway on the other side of the state is a city called Hot Springs, which is close to a few IMBA Epic trails, like Womble. There are a fair bit of mountain bikers in Hot Springs, but they’re used to driving a little ways to get to trails. It’s not as convenient as Bentonville—yet. Bentonville proved that if you build trails, greenways, and all the other stuff that mountain bikers like, they’ll visit. That’s why I’m here. I was invited to Hot Springs to meet with some of their decision makers, have a look at what they’re building, and give you guys a sneak peak at what’s to come. So on Wednesday I landed in Little Rock, drove to Hot Springs, scarfed down a Jersey Mike’s sub in the car, stopped at Parkside Cycle to pick up a sweet carbon loaner bike, and headed out to some local trails. Thanks to the jersey mikes sub I had to cut my ride short, and headed to my room at Hotel Hot Springs to get some work done. I couldn’t believe how nice it was. I guess someone didn’t get the memo that Seth was coming to town, not Casey. Still I did a time lapse from the room. Anyway, I went out that night with a couple of people from Visit Hot Springs, which is the tourism department for the city. While sitting in a bar that used to be a brothel, they agreed to get me clearance to film in a restricted area full of unsanctioned trails. In the near future, those trails would be groomed for sanctioned use. The following morning, I met them downtown to go to the trails, but first we went to this place with a red couch to take my picture. The photographer told me to do whatever I wanted on the couch, so I did. Then we were off to the trails. It would be smart to make this part of a trail because it looks dope. It’s not every day you get to ride across the top of a dam. I don’t know if the locals have named these trails yet, but I’d name this one “damn straight”. Everywhere you go in these woods, you'll find IMBA’s boundary flags tied to shrubs and trees. The plan is to connect all these trails together, and build brand new ones that link up to the downtown. From the looks of it, there’s going to be something for everyone. Afterwards I decided to go back to the trail from the previous day… the one I got sick on. Hot Springs looks really promising. It’s surrounded by hills and mountains, has some existing trail systems, and lots of other things that mountain bikers like. While talking to the guys at Parkside Cycle, they gave me the lowdown on Womble, an IMBA Epic trail a little ways outside of town. We’ll have a look at that trail next time, as well as some of the bigger more technical rides on the outskirts of town. I am now on to making the next video. ----Errors---- I mistakenly confused Doctor Walkman (who is actually a chap in Italy who repairs walkman) with Mihokm who supplies the belts on ebay. I apologise for the confusion. In addition - I probably should have just said the walkman was working fine at the end - it would have been a happier end for everyone. I'm a bit too honest for my own good sometimes. I could easily have shown it playing on both decks and dubbed the sound over. Given the feedback it seems like a many people would have preferred this...so sorry for that.

It's the age old question. Why, oh why, is there a twist in the floppy disk drive ribbon cable? Ever since I opened up my first PC I've looked that that twist and thought... that seems out of place. But the reason behind it is actually based in pure common sense, and maybe an over engineered original solution, perhaps. Here, I show you intuitively how, just by using the rules of reflection and a little bit of geometry and angles, you can actually figure out the positions of images due to placements of objects at various locations. Usually, you are taught concave mirrors, by giving you a concave mirror and then show how the rays of light converge to a point. That didn't feel very complete to me. I always wondered, if no one had told me about a concave mirror, could I some how rediscover the shape needed to converge a beam of light? So here I start from a plane mirror and show you intuitively (step by step) how we can modify that mirror's shape according to how we need the reflected light to converge at a particular point. The video might be a little bit long, but I guess, which this insight you will never forget what a concave mirror does, because you would have rediscovered it. If not, click the link in the description for a playlist of this contest as it panned out from the beginning. Last time, we got to see some of my favorite video entries, and you guys shared your opinions in the comments. There will be two winners, and today I’ll reveal one of them. Let’s do a quick recap of the finalists. There was Ike, who volunteers at a non profit bike shop, and actually races a bike he built from scratch. There was Chris who hosts community rides and wants a bike to lend out to newcomers. There was also Dan who since last time has started posting more on youtube. We saw him huck these huge road gaps on an XC bike. We also met Drew, who laid out a plan to surprise a local rider and film it. We saw proof of how Drew films things, so this was a story a lot of you wanted to see the continue. Then there was Alex, a humble kid from Norcal who rides a bike that’s much older than him. He appreciates and cares for this bike, even though it’s clearly holding him back. It seemed like a lot of you could relate to Alex. So, who is the first winner? Today was a great day for Alex. To him this was a total surprise. I reached out to his family last week and gave them the tracking number. They kept the whole thing under wraps to coordinate a surprise, and Alex could barely believe it. He keeps saying thank you over and over, and that gratitude is directed at all of you. It was you guys who chose Alex and now we get to see his story continue. Alex’s old bike had a head shock with probably under 50mm of travel. The dropper seat post, the Sram 1x11, and the slack modern geometry mean that Alex is no longer be outgunned, no matter where he goes. Alex’s friends were as excited as he was, and tag teamed the bike to get it assembled right. New bikes take some tweaking and getting used to, but I still wasn’t surprised to see Alex taking flight almost immediately. It’s worth mentioning that Alex wasn’t exactly prepared for this. When he woke up that day he wasn’t expecting to win a bike, or to film anything, so this reveal is only the beginning. Throughout this riding season we’ll get to see Alex’s story pan out, and watch his riding style grow and evolve. As he collects footage, I’ll post some videos here, but you can also check his channel in the link below. As for this contest, it’s not over yet. We still get to find out who wins my personal bike; The bike that has been a major part of this channel since last summer.
