Watch the whole beginner playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5S7V5NhM8JQoi8vhELX-9aYHmRtmCveT So the beginner skills workshop went well. The plan was to meet a bunch of beginners at the trailhead, have them ride some little obstacles, and give them advice on how to improve. These rows of logs were already in place as a sort of practice course. The smaller logs were easy for most people. The bigger ones were more of a challenge. Like you would expect, most people rode into the logs and held on for dear life, letting their suspension take the impact. That was sort of the topic of the workshop—that is getting out of that habit. To ride big bumps smoothly, you need to stand up and shift your weight around. The first thing to hit an obstacle is your front wheel, so it’s going to take the brunt of the impact. To soften the blow, you should get as much of your body weight off the front wheel as possible. To get your front wheel up bring your chest to your handlebars and pop upwards. This should be timed so that you cooperate with your suspension, just like the motion of hopping around on a pogo stick, or jumping off a diving board. Once you’ve gotten the hang of this part, you’ll still have your rear wheel slamming into things. So, you’ll need to lurch forwards to get the weight off of it. This needs to be timed just right, but all it takes is practice. The thing is most people don’t practice. They go out on the trails, ride over stuff sloppily, and keep moving. The key to getting better is to go back and clean things. To clean something is to ride over it smoothly and confidently, without putting a foot down or losing your balance. Here’s a real mountain bike trail, and here’s a real mountain biker. He won’t go home without cleaning this rocky transfer. Whether you’re riding rocks on the side of a mountain, or riding logs in a parking lot, you’re a badass if you keep trying. Out on the trail you’ll be hitting obstacles one after the other, so I challenged the participants to ride both of these in a row. To set up for a feature it takes a few seconds, but sometimes you don’t have a few seconds. Exercises like these teach you how to set up quickly for consecutive obstacles. It was great to see so many people make so much progress. They all had the bruises to prove it too. As for Lisa, she was still getting comfortable with the idea of standing on a bike. Many of us take this for granted, having ridden bikes for most of our lives. You stand up to climb a hill, or just because your butt is sore. Lisa’s cycling experience consisted of riding her hybrid around the neighborhood, so standing was a new and scary concept. At the beginners workshop she finally got the hang of it, but never ventured on to the bigger logs. It would be a few weeks before I met with Lisa again, since the holidays were approaching. During that time, she was making trips to Jonathan Dickinson Park by herself. Despite there being many closer parks, she kept making the 1.5 hour drive at every opportunity she had. Lisa found her favorite trail, and she was addicted. Having ridden JD before I can see why. It’s flowy, and easy to go fast on. It’s not technical or challenging, but it makes you happy to be on a bike. It may have been just what she needed. Last weekend I met Lisa at Oleta River State park to practice. This little patch of roots is situated between two trees. Immediately after the trees are more roots, and a wooden ramp. For some reason, it was sketching Lisa out. We kept trying it over, and over, and over. Lisa kept putting on the brakes before the ramp. Then I noticed she wasn’t the only one getting sketched out. To be fair he didn’t sign up for mountain bike boot camp that day, but why give up after coming so close? Lisa had defeated the sketchy tree ramp, and consequently the blurry quitter. She made quick work of the rest of the trail. In overcoming her fear, Lisa had made a breakthrough. During this series I’ve been holding my handlebars with one hand and filming Lisa with the other. Today marks the last time I can do that. Just the other month, Lisa wouldn’t go down this mound. She didn’t even want to walk down it. It’ll be satisfying to see her make quick work of this trail the next time we’re at Virginia Key. Next time, we’re going to take a short break from riding and talk about maintenance, cleaning, and basic mountain bike troubleshooting.

Between 8 October 2016 and 8 January 2017, the British Museum sent a Spotlight loan of samian ware pottery to Turner Contemporary in Margate as part of the Museum’s wide-ranging national partnership work. Also known as pudding pans, the pottery originally washed ashore from a Roman shipwreck off the coast near Whitstable. The British Museum National Programmes team and Turner Contemporary have commissioned artist Hannah Lees to create a new work in response to the Spotlight loan. Working in close collaboration with an artist allowed both organisations to bring an important new perspective to the interpretation of the pots. Focusing on the idea of feasting, Hannah worked with Richard Hobbs, Weston Curator of Roman Britain and Sam Moorhead, National Finds Advisor: Iron Age and Roman Coins to ensure that all aspects of her installation were accurate as well as evocative. SOLAR PANELS HOW TO WITH SYNTH AND GUITAR Subscribe for new videos!. Solar Panels don't just have to be used to generate electricity. they can be used as an instrument by themselves. go like www.facebook.com/lookmumnocomputer for more stuff! If you have a sound source give it a go! (even if you don't have a sound source check at the bottom of the description). all you need is a solar panel and a way of connecting it to whatever you have. in the video i use a broken guitar cable. but you can go proper like at the end of the video with the 5 solar panels on a big panel with jack sockets. you can plug it up to readily available synths too like the ARTURIA mini brute in the video. check the rest of the videos over at LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER NEWS FLASH. after i filmed it i just plugged the solar panel into a guitar amp and it was picking up the modulations within the lights (from the national grid power supply) which was in turn making an oscillation!!! try it. just make sure you have a low watt bulb because large watt bulbs tend to not flicker as much as there is a lot more to cool down and heat up, so it won't sound as good! go get a 20 watt bulb from the poundshop. I’ve lived in South Florida for close to 5 years, and one of the things I love doing is riding Fort Lauderdale Critical Mass. As I explained in another video, Critical Mass is an international phenomenon. Once per month, hundreds or thousands of cyclists meet up at a predetermined location to ride around their city in a huge group. There’s no attendance sheet or anything like that; You just show up. Fort Lauderdale is a small city though, so their Critical Mass ride is quite manageable. Sure it causes traffic, and you’d be hard pressed to see the entire group from any vantage point, but it’s small compared to the ride that takes place 20 minutes away in Miami. Until last week, I had never been on Miami Critical Mass. It was really fun. I ran into a lot of subscribers and fans. I gave them blinkies. The whole time though, I couldn’t get over the scale of the mass. One thing’s for sure, it’s very different from the ride I’m used to going on in Fort Lauderdale. In Fort Lauderdale, there’s free parking at the meetup spot, which is vacant lot right outside of downtown. It’s pretty convenient if you’re driving there. In Miami, there’s no such thing as free parking. In Fort Lauderdale hundreds of people ride Critical Mass, and sometimes the group breaks 1000. If you’ve never seen it before, it’s a sight to behold. In Miami, those numbers are peanuts. I have no idea how many riders were in last week’s mass, but it was a lot. Towards the end of the ride we stopped at the top of a bridge for a solid 15 minutes. People were passing us the whole time. When we started riding again we were in the thick of things like nothing ever happened. In Fort Lauderdale it’s a festive atmosphere at the meetup point. Everyone is saying hi to their friends, and socializing before the ride. They know it’s going to be a fun night. As for Miami… Not everyone is waiting around at the meetup point. In Miami the the route looks like a big rectangle. For a mass that large is better to keep everyone on long straightaways through the downtown. It’s the perfect way to see the best parts of Miami from street level. In Fort Lauderdale, the route looks more like a game of snake that you would play on an old Nokia Cell phone. The smaller, nimbler group makes its way through congested downtown areas, residential neighborhoods, and even cul-de-sacs . In Fort Lauderdale, there’s always some guy towing a bike trailer with huge speakers in it. This is called a speaker douche and there’s one on every ride. They’re always riding alone and they always have terrible taste in music, but at least they’re pretty easy to get away from. In Miami, there’s a speaker douche every tenth of a mile. They’re next to impossible to get away from. I’d play the audio more so you can hear it, but I’ll probably get a copyright claim. In Fort Lauderdale, you may come across Benjamin on his tall bike. In Miami, look out for Raven and his army of mutant tall bikes. In Fort Lauderdale, the city turns a blind eye to the ride. In the past they tried to get involved but caused more problems than they solved. So for now the ride is self governed, and usually happens without incident. As for Miami, the city at least in part, embraces the ride. For the thousands of riders who participate, the Miami PD blocks the major intersections so everyone can pass safely. They do this quite effectively. In Fort Lauderdale, tourists are surprised to see the mass passing by. They ask us where we’re going, and snap pictures with their cell phones. It’s really fun to see the looks on their faces when they realize the true size of the group. So, half the entertainment comes from the people at the side of the road. In Miami, stay away from the people at the side of the road. So, if you live in South Florida or you’re visiting, I hope this has given you a little taste of what to expect at each ride. Info on Miami’s ride can be found through Miami Bike Scene, and Fort Lauderdale’s ride through their Critical Mass Facebook page. I’ll leave links to both. If you live near Hollywood you may want to check out their ride too, which is a little more intimate. One thing all of South Florida’s rides have in common is that you can participate in short sleeves at any time of the year. For that reason, you can’t go wrong with any of them. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time. A look at DAT - tape that sounded as good as a CD and was supposed to replace cassettes...however the recording industry decided it had to die. FAQs & Updates are below CORRECTIONS Long Play Mode is 32kHz (added as an annotation before the video went live) WARNING This video may contain the occasional redundant turn of phrase...e.g. "DAT Tape" if this is of concern, please do not press play. FAQs Q) Are you going to do a video about Minidisc? A) Yes - (see 21:22) Q) When A) I don't know Q) Hey why didn't you go into detail about the computer backup tape drives that used DAT? A) Because this was a video about DAT...Digital Audio Tape. You're thinking of DDS Digital Data Storage. I won't be making a video about DDS, so if it's something you know a lot about, and you think there would be an audience for a video on DDS, you should cover it. Q) Did you know that you can record off a radio using a computer? A) I'd guess that everyone knows this...I was only pointing out that Modern HiFi systems rarely contain a separate recording component any more. You can always record anything if you put your mind to it. Q) Hey LOL you said that we are using Napster...you're so out of date dude...etc A) Here's what's going on - Remember Mr Angry in 1986 trying to stop DAT (pretty much what the first half of the video is about)...well when I say..."of course he wasn't to know that in 15 years or so we would be using file sharing programmes like Napster". The maths works like this 1986 + 15 years = 2002 (2017 is 31 years later...not 15). Some people suggest they may be a better fit on Brady's dedicated physics channel (called Sixty Symbols). In response, the reasons they are on Numberphile are: 1) Tadashi, while certainly a modern polymath, is based in a mathematics department. 2) This sub series (with its animation and extra production work) has been supported by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, a Numberphile collaborator. 3) Some of the previous and future Tadashi videos are more math-oriented than physics - and it just makes sense to put them on one channel rather than dividing the series between two channels on an ad hoc basis. In a multi-disciplinary world, it is challenging to run YouTube channels which people come to associate with just one discipline. That said, feel free to go over and watch hundreds of physics videos on Sixty Symbols --- https://www.youtube.com/sixtysymbols
My Gimbal: http://amzn.to/2iG8OKB Hero5 Session: http://amzn.to/2hSJ7o3 Chest strap: http://amzn.to/2ic0MqJ This right here, is called a wearable gimbal. It runs on batteries, holds a GoPro, and gets mounted to a chest strap. It makes your footage look really smooth. Before wearable gimbals became affordable, YouTube channels like BK-XC, Singletrack Sampler, and Nate Hills were not really possible. Watching unstabilized GoPro footage is cool for a few seconds, but starts to make you dizzy after a while. I should know, as I’ll look through hours of it to get the clips I need for my videos. Sometimes I need to take a break, or take a Tylenol. In any case, I think action cameras in general give you a skewed sense of the actual terrain. Gimbal footage, while smooth and pleasant to watch, can further hide some of the features that are clearly visible in real life. The three channels I mentioned do a great job of showcasing the terrain with action cameras—probably better than anyone else out there. Still, I assure you that those trails look way bigger and scarier in real life. To give you an idea of what these guys are actually riding, I put together some comparison clips. Here’s a clip shot on my Hero5 Session with onboard stabilization. Here’s that same section shot with a Hero4 Black on a wearable gimbal. And here’s that section on my Panasonic G7. It looks somewhat similar on all cameras, since it’s on smooth and flowy terrain. Here’s another similar clip shot on the Session. And on the gimbal. Finally, on the G7. You can get a better sense of the terrain in the third person clip. Let’s try something more technical. Here, I’m riding down some rocks with the gimbal on. Let’s see that again. How big do you think that rock was? Let’s see it once more with the Hero Session. Although shaky, we can see those rocks a little better now without the gimbal. But, I bet you didn’t think they were as tall as me. Shot 3rd person, we can see they’re a little bigger. Here’s a step down off wooden platform, shot with the gimbal. How big would you say it is? Let’s try with the Hero Session. Okay, now we’re starting to see not only the drop, but the gap between the wooden platform and the landing. Now shot from different perspective it starts to look way different. As you can see, the GoPro footage doesn’t even come close to revealing the size of this drop. Some stuff will look about the same when viewed from either a first person or third person angle. Flowy terrain in particular doesn’t change dramatically. It’s when things get bumpy that you really lose a sense of what you’re looking at. Here’s a little patch of rocks filmed with the gimbal. Here’s the same patch with just a GoPro. And third person. Very doable by most mountain bikers, but still it looks like nothing when shot from the chest mount. Let’s take a look at something different. Here’s a little jump section with wooden lips. I actually think the GoPro does a decent job in this case, of showing what they look like. On the camera though, you can see the nose bonk at the beginning, and the true steepness of the lips. On the GoPro you can barely see the nose bonk, and the lips look really mellow. This would also be the case for steep climbs, which probably look mellow on a GoPro. Even the stuff shot on my G7 looks bigger in real life, because of lost depth perception, but the shallow depth of field brings a little of it back. By that, I mean that the focus is sharper in one part of the image than another. GoPro cameras by design, are made to bring the whole image into focus because they’re supposed to capture the entire scene. This, along with the wide angle lens, tends to flatten out the terrain. So why would a camera designed to capture action be made like this? Why don’t they design GoPros to pick up the relief in the terrain? Well, let’s see what that would look like. Here, I’m riding on a very smooth trail with a high end Sony Camcorder. It has a floating lens for stabilization, plus a skilled cameraman holding it. How would you like to watch that all day? Yeah, a narrow field of view doesn’t work so well for first person footage. It would be like looking through binoculars on a jetski. So action cameras are not perfect but they are the best tools we have for the job. Having seen this video, I’d suggest you go back to the channels I mentioned and watch those videos with a fresh perspective. I’ll leave some links in the description for their channels, as well as all my gear in case you’re interested. The stars in the sky appear to move in arcs overhead, but it's actually the Earth that is spinning. They look like they're doing loops around Polaris, the north star, because it lies on the axis of Earth's rotation. If you point a camera at Polaris and spin it at the same rate as the sky turns (in the opposite direction), you can halt the rotation of the stars! My first semi-sucessful attempt at this timelapse was taken through my window in Santa Barbara, where the sky (and the glass) are none too clear. Over break, I had the chance to visit a real middle-of nowhere dark sky site with power available - home in North Carolina! One of the most common questions I get is "Can you use these finger picking techniques if you don't have long nails?" My answer has always been "Yes", but I've never been in a position to demonstrate it. This week I found myself with a few weeks break before my next gig, so I thought I'd file them off and actually have a go at demonstrating it! In this video I upgrade a 5.1 home cinema system to a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos & DTS-X Capable system. It features a review of the Marantz NR1607 AV receiver and impressions of how effective Atmos is in the most basic two front upfiring speaker configuration in a small room.....continued.... Featuring the Marantz NR1607 AV Receiver, PSB Imagine XA Atmos Upfiring Speakers, PSB XB Bookshelf Speakers and PSB XC Centre Speaker. UPDATE - CORRECTION - CLARIFICATION I must have done a very bad job in the video of getting across the Atmos experience. So let me try again. I really like my Atmos system. It sounds very very good. It's much better than my old system. The sound feels like it's coming from all around. "It feels like I'm in the middle of a bubble of sound". Now my comments in the video were about expectations vs reality. I expected to be able to identify exactly where a sound was coming from...imagine someone dropping a coin upstairs on a wooden floor. In reality with just a couple of speakers that type of directional focus just isn't achievable...it also woundn't be achievable with four speakers as sound dissipates like a cone..rather than focusses like a laser. So whilst the sound comes from all around...it won't make you duck. It is though...and I repeat...it is, very good and much better than 5.1 ADDITIONAL INSTALL INFO As I'm using upfiring speakers and have a small room with my seating sposition close to the rear wall, adding rear upfiring speakers is something that manufacturers recommend avoiding. The reason for this is because I would be too close to the rear speakers, so would hear the sound emanating from the speakers rather than the sound reflected off the ceiling...thereby making the installation of rear Atmos pointless. In a small room with upfiring speakers, it is recommended that you only install the front pair. A) After I got a 65" 4K OLED TV I've just been watching that. The room couldn't accomodate a large enough projector screen to make it worthwhile. Q) You don't need expensive HDMI cables A) If you try passing 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 through a HDMI cable that doesn't support 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 you'll soon see why you need to use the right cable. *I'm not suggesting paying a lot of money for a cable* you can get a cheap one, but just make sure it supports the standards you need or you experience connection issues. This isn't idle talk, I've tested this out...I don't make up nonsense for fun...observations are based upon personal experience....not just stuff I've heard. Q) What about that switchbox? A) I haven't used it...its from Amazon http://amzn.to/2hCynNE Q) I wasn't paying attention and need you to justify to me why you bought a new AV receiver because that's a normal way to behave.
