How are contemporary works of art looked after at the Museum? See how Karel Nel’s ‘Potent Fields’ was prepared for our #SouthAfricanArt exhibition. The artwork is made using ochre, a natural pigment found in the earth. It is inspired by the discovery of 77,000-year-old engraved ochre in Blombos Cave on the southern coast of South Africa. The pigment alludes to the long history of art in South Africa, but also the colour division of apartheid. The work also acknowledges the potential for a colour balance in post-apartheid South Africa. You can buy your tickets for the exhibition here: http://ow.ly/JWSy305MKUS
Check out my SR latch video first: https://youtu.be/KM0DdEaY5sY The JK flip-flop builds on the SR flip-flop by adding a "toggle" function when both inputs are 1. The S (set) and R (reset) inputs are now referred to as J (set) and K (reset) to indicate the different operation. In other words: J=1, K=0 sets the flip-flop J=0, K=1 resets the flip-flop J=1, K=1 toggles the flip-flop The toggling function is useful for building counter circuits which we'll do in future videos. If you want just a few blinkies: http://amzn.to/2i8YTip If you want the cheap as balls ones just search Alibaba and DHgate, it's all the same crap. I ordered 100 and paid like 90 cents apiece, but I see better deals on there now. This box contains 100 miniature rubber bike lights, which I ordered directly from a manufacturer in China. In this quantity they’re cheap as balls. Literally, I think they cost as much as ping pong balls. Anyway these lights are great for being seen when riding around town but they’re pretty useless for lighting up your path. Each light has 3 settings; constant on, strobe, and slow blink. They’re sometimes known as safety lights, but I prefer the colloquial “blinky”. So you may be thinking, dude why did you buy all these blinkies? Well it’s in direct response to a comment on the bike lights video. I had joked that for the price of one hight end bike light you could buy 10 cheapo lights off Amazon and put them all on your handlebars. You guys want to see that, but I don’t. Riding around with 64,000 milliamps worth of the cheapest lithium ion batteries you can legally buy would be sketchy at best. So, I’ve opted for 100 of these harmless blinkies instead. The Fat Ripper is the perfect bike for this experiment because of the skinny steel tubing, rigid fork, and BMX handlebars. We should be able to fit all 100 blinkies on the front. Almost immediately I started finding some duds. This was unsurprising. Still 90 something lights would be no joke, so I weeded out the bad ones and pressed on, methodically. Not a single nook or cranny was spared. Afterwards I took a closer look at the duds and found that they were ALL easy to repair. By replacing the batteries or playing around with the contacts, all 100 blinkies were working. I even found spots for them. Now to wait for nightfall. Turning all the blinkies on took a few minutes, and I even found that one of them was red. The question on everyone’s mind though is whether the combined might of 100 blinkies is enough to illuminate a path. The answer is, sort of. Clearly there was light being projected, randomly from the front of the bike. I did my best to point the blinkies towards the ground, but it’s only possible to do so much. One thing’s for sure; everyone could see me. Fun blinky fact. There are 2 CR2032 batteries per blinky—you know those flat batteries that cost $7 a pair at the drugstore. At that price it costs wayyy less to just replace your whole blinky when the batteries go dead. That’s ridiculous. Of course, buying your 2032’s in bulk would help. Still, it’s amazing how long the batteries last on these. You can expect to get a few weeks worth of commuting out of one blinky before it goes dead. That reminds me, there’s a reason we call these blinkies. As I rode around town, causing seizures and scaring puppies, I realized that I’ve done much more ridiculous things to a fat bike. So there you have it, 100 blinkies. I know it’s not the 10 amazon lights you guys really wanted to see, but at least these can’t explode 4 inches from my scrotum. As a very wise man once said, safety is number one priority. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this and if you see me at Miami Critical Mass this Friday I’ll give you one of these blinkies. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time. This is a good problem to test your skills in PV diagrams. Here a VT diagram is given to you and you are asked to figure out how the PV diagram looks like I go over the steps that came to my mind when I first looked at the problem and solved it. It's pretty simple once you understand what processes are going on. So go ahead and try to solve it and see if you can do it yourself A new problem everyday (almost :D) Take care

Here is the link you need that I keep mentioning in the video: http://www.driving4answers.com/troubleshooting-my-engine/ Engines often don't run, especially after a tear down and rebuild. After I rebuilt my engine I couldn't get it to run right. There was misfiring and low power. This called for some step by step engine troubleshooting to find out what is wrong with my engine. I realized this might be useful for a lot of people, especially with older engines, when they decided to troubleshoot their engine on their own. So here are some of the first things to look at when trying to figure out what's wrong with your engine: Spark plugs Spark plugs are great bang-for-back item in terms of diagnosis. They are super easy to remove and can tell you a lot about what might be wrong with your internal combustion bundle of joy. In the link above there's little chart that can help you diagnose your spark plugs in case they don't look normal. Fuel pressure Fuel pressure can go out of spec because of any of the following: leaky injector o-rings, faulty injectors, dying fuel pump. Fuel pressure is also relatively easy to check. Fuel pressure for a 4age 16v should be 38 to 44 psi (265-304 kPa). In the link above there are detailed instruction on how to check your fuel pressure on a Toyota 4AGE 16v Air Flow meter If everything checks out fuel wise I would take a look at the Airflow meter next. Checking it out is super simple, just rip out a multi-meter and measure the resistances. Make sure you are measuring using the correct resistance setting and also make sure you're multimeter is zeroed in case it's an analog one. Zero it in by touching the probes together and turning the knob until the dial hits zero. Zero in for the resistance setting you will be using. In the link above are workshop manual pages with detailed airflow meter specs to look for when measuring on your Toyota 4age 16v. Throttle body position sensor (TPS) Same deal as the Air flow meter. Get out the multimeter and test. You need a thickness gauge for this part too. This can be done on the car but its a lot easier if you actually take the throttle body off. In the link above are workshop manual pages with detailed TPS specs to look for when measuring on your Toyota 4age 16v. Ignition timing Correct ignition timing is critical for making power and running right. ignition timing determines when spark occurs in relation to the position of the piston. In case its wrong you can have incomplete combustion, knocking and other stuff you don't want. Ignition timing is checked with a timing light. In case of the 4a-ge the procedure is as follows: Make sure engine is at operating temperature Attach timing light (watch video below to see how) Connect diagnostic plugs E1 and T Fire up engine Point timing light at timing marks. Timing needs to be 10 degrees before top dead center (BDTC) i.e. advanced for the 4A-GE 16v Cam timing Cam timing is not to be confused with igniton timing. Cam timing determines the position of your camshafts in relation to the position of your pistons. How do you check cam timing? Easy. Camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulleys all have TDC marks on them that need to align with TDC marks on things right behind them. Cam pulleys align against the backing plate, crankshaft pulley aligns with the bottom timing cover (corolla 4age) or with the pointer needle (MR2 4age) and the timing belt sprocket aligns with a mark on the oil pump (you need to remove crank pulley and timing cover to see this). Lift up your car, remove the passanger side-rear wheel, remove the top timing cover, rotate engine by hand until crank pulley is at tdc. In case any of your cam timing pulleys is not at tdc your cam timing is off and that will make your engine run like poop. What was wrong in my case? MY timing belt skipped a tooth. How did I find out? By looking at my cam timing. When I put my crank pulley at TDC neither off my cam pulleys was at TDC. This clearly told me something was off here. What failed? A 30 year old tensioner pulley spring couldn't do its job. I could not tighten the tensioner pulley sufficiently and my belt would skipped a tooth. I tried it twice and twice it skipped. Solution? Got rid of it, pushed tensioner pulley in manually and tightened it down. Worked like a charm. A whole nother car now. Yay! Some sort of road trip needs to happen soon. This is a mountain bike, and at the heart of any bike is its frame. Let’s start with the parts of the frame. This here is the top tube, the down tube, the seat tube, the seat stay, and the chain stay. This area down here is called the bottom bracket shell. At the very front of your bike is the head tube, which houses the steerer tube. This moves smoothly thanks to a set of cups and bearings collectively known as the headset. Above that are headset spacers and the stem. The stem, which clamps on to your handlebars, is fastened to the steerer tube with a top cap and pinch bolts. On your handlebars you’ll find brake levers, shifters, grips, and end plugs. All this stuff up here is collectively known as the cockpit. Moving down is your fork, which in this case is a suspension fork. This top piece is called a crown. Some bikes are fitted with dual crown forks for added strength. The crown is what holds your stanchions, which you should try as hard as possible not to scratch. Don’t hang your bike by the stanchions. Down here is your brake caliper, which camps down on your rotor when you squeeze your brake lever. Some calipers are mechanical, while others are hydraulic. Hydraulic brakes push fluid through a hose, while mechanical brakes pull the caliper using a cable. This big round thing is a wheel. If you buy a front and back wheel together, it’s called a wheelset. All the parts of your wheels are held together using spokes, which connect to your rim with these little guys. They’re called nipples. Also on the rim is a valve stem which is used for pumping air into your tires. At the center of the wheel is the hub, and inside the hub are bearings. The hub rotates around an axle. On a lot of mountain bikes this takes the form of a thru axle, which can be removed or installed by hand. On the rear wheel a cassette hub. This has a ratcheting mechanism built into it which is made to accept a cassette. The cassette is a set of cogs which can actually be changed to your liking. The size of each cog is measured by the number of teeth it has, and these teeth are specially designed to work with a chain. Your chain is made up of individual links, with one link in particular being possible to unfasten easily. This is called a master link. The chain can be shifted up and down the cassette with a derailleur, which is attached to the bike via a small breakable part called a derailleur hanger. If your derailleur hanger snaps or bends, you can just get a new one. On the derailleur itself is a long spring loaded piece called the cage, which keeps tension on the chain. The chain passes through the upper pulley and lower pulley, also known as the jockey and idler respectively. Moving down to the bottom bracket shell, you’ll find your crankset, with the most visible parts being the crank arms. The crank arms are attached to the spindle, which runs through a set of bearings which are inside the bottom bracket shell. The spindle and bearings collectively are known as the bottom bracket. The part with all the teeth is called the chainring. Some bikes have up to 3 of these. At the end of the crank arms are pedals, which can be found in many different forms. The crankset, chain, derailleur and cassette are collectively known as your drivetrain. On a full suspension mountain bike you’ll find a variety of stuff connecting the front and rear of the bike together, known as the suspension linkage. At the heart of all this is your shock. This is usually fastened to the linkage on one side, and to your top tube or down tube on the other. Moving up, we have the seat, or saddle. The two words are interchangeable, but some people think it’s pretentious to call it a saddle. Personally I don’t care what you call it as long as you don’t correct other people. In any case this is most definitely not a saddle post, it’s a seat post, and it’s held on to your bike with a seat post clamp, or collar. These days a lot of seat posts can be adjusted on the fly. Those are called dropper posts. So I just named well over 50 parts of a mountain bike, but all of these parts can be broken down into hundreds more. So, put those terms down in the comments, and if you’re really bored see if you can come up with an exact count of the terms I used in this video. Also, tell me how you pronounce derailleur. Are you one of those people who say “derailleeyur?”. In any case thanks for riding with me today, I’ll see you next time.
New Zealand artist Marian Maguire discusses the inspirations for her lithographic series ‘Titokowaru’s dilemma’. Marian uses the instantly recognisable silhouettes of ancient Greek red-and-black figure pottery, decorating them with Māori motifs and images from the story of Titokowaru, a 19th-century Māori tohunga (an expert practitioner of any skill or art, either religious or otherwise), who led both passive and aggressive campaigns against European settlers.

The other day I took a stetoschope to my car and I was amazed by the things you can hear with just a stetoscope. Put it against the cam cover and you can hear a whole plethora of weird mechanical sounds. Put it against the injectors and you can hear them firing loud and clear. Put it against the distributor and you can hear the rotor spinning at a crazy pase hitting the contacts in the distri butor cap. More fun can be hear if you put the stetoschope against the oil pan where you can hear the crankshaft spinning. Usually all of these engine sounds are compltely inadubile, obscured by the sounds of combustion. But a simple cheap stetoschope lets anyone hear them all. How I did it? Its a low-tech solution and the simplest cheapest one I could find. The audio quality is not perfect but it is good enough for the purpose. I took apart a stetoschope and stuck a lavalier mic in the plastic tube and taped them together. Simple as that. So if you got a car and an engine don't rob yourself of a really fun experience and stick that stetoschope against that big v8 in your muscle car or maybe an even exotic engine in a super car? Don't worry 4 cylinders are just as fun, no dyscrimination here. The engine in the video is my fully rebuild Toyota 4a-ge bigport sitting in my 1987 Toyota MR2 mk1 (aw11). A lot of you guys have been waiting for this—a close look at the Box One. Just the derailleur and shifter would set you back about $250. That’s not cheap, and with their very established competitors offering a wide range of options in 1x11, consumers are going to want some tangible reasons to go with the relatively unproven Box One. Well thanks to you guys, Box sent me a derailleur and shifter to test out. Let’s take a close look at the Box One, install it, and go for a ride. We’ll start with the derailleur, which seems kind of big and heavy. Still it feels rugged, and I could see it taking a lot of abuse. It has a clutch, which is always engaged, and a cable stop which pivots when impacted. They call this “Pivot Tech”. While this does seem like it would absorb side and rear impacts, it’s worth mentioning that Sram’s cable stop doesn’t stick out in the first place. Of course, it also needs this little plastic wheel to get the cable going in the right direction. Shimano’s solution is to position their derailleur further under the chainstay to keep the whole thing out of harm’s way. All three companies have significantly different approaches to protecting their derailleurs, all of which are quite innovative. Because the Box One is meant to be used as a 1x11, there doesn’t appear to be a long or short cage version, just one size. It has less ground clearance than my Sram XO, but only by about half a centimeter. Yeah I went metric for you guys. So at first glance the major plus sides to the Box One derailleur are that it’s simple and robust. The downsides are that it’s pretty big and kind of pricey. Let’s move on to the shifter. This is where things start to get really interesting, because the Box One “Push Push” shifter only has one switch. Shifting into bigger gears is done just like Shimano or Sram, by pushing the lever forwards with your thumb. To upshift, you push that same lever laterally with the tip of your thumb. I don’t know if this is better or just different, but it’s certainly innovative. Alright let me show you guys something really cool, but first I need to rebuild my Sram GX shifter. I’ll just remove these little screws and take this little plate off and ghhaaaa!!! I’d rather buy a new one than open this can of worms. Now let’s say you’ve had a particularly rough season on your Box One, and you want to get it running like new. The whole assembly literally drops out of the shifter into your hand. Presumably, you could recklessly clean this entire thing in degreaser, re-lube it, and get it working like new. A user serviceable shifter will certainly win Box some brownie points. When installing the Box One, I needed to take my grip and brake off to get the shifter on. It doesn’t have a two piece clamp, but no big deal. It nested under my Sram Guide brake lever nicely. I should have brought a new cable housing though, because I needed a few extra inches to reach the cable stop. So, my cables will be a little messy today. The rest of the installation went ridiculously smooth. I set the limits, adjusted the B screw, and tightened the cable to find it shifting perfectly. I’ll chalk this up to good luck. Time to hit the trails. Most experienced mountain bikers could tell the difference between Sram and Shimano with their eyes closed. Shimano has a heavy clunky feel, while Sram has a light clicky feel. I actually like both of them with a slight preference for Shimano. On down shifts, the Box One feels more like Shimano than it does Sram, but the long lever feels totally different than both companies. Needless to say the lateral upshifts would be a new experience to anyone. I found it effortless to prod at it with my thumb, however I wouldn’t want to push it any harder. If things weren’t working optimally I could see this being annoying, but I don’t know for sure if that would ever be an issue. I got used to the Box One almost immediately. At no point during my ride did I reach for an invisible lever. Maybe it was because I was excited to use it and consciously thinking about it, or maybe because I’m used to demoing lots of different components. The clutch seemed to work fine, and my bike wasn’t any noisier than usual. I had no problems shifting, and no regrets about putting the Box One on my bike. That morning, it performed as well as anything I’ve tried from Sram or Shimano. I liked it. It just feels fun and enjoyable to use. For the full transcript, turn on closed captions. When did Christians start giving Christmas presents? This video explains the origins of giving Christmas presents. The tradition of trees, Santa, and giving presents on Christmas morning comes from the 1800s. Traditional Christmas seasons saw events in town squares, but the 19th century moved Christmas to the home. This video explains how Christmas presents and giving became part of our culture today. This is a hash up of Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder and was released exclusively for Amiga Format by Sensible Software for Christmas 1993. Song by "Sur La Planche" by La Femme It was Ammar's first time in Europe, and it was our most ambitious episode yet. Using only Tinder to find locals, we relied on the generous strangers to give us shelter, food, and a night out. A very big thank you to every kind soul who helped us along the way. Yes Theory are four friends from four different countries who constantly seek discomfort in order to grow. Ammar, Thomas, Matt and Derin met in Montreal, Canada in the summer of 2015 and bonded over their shared desire to live a life that challenged and excited them. Fast forward to a year later, the team is now based out of Los Angeles, making a show on Snapchat Discover every Sunday on the Brother Channel. Enjoy! SHARE the love! And SUBSCRIBE for more.
