In 2016 hesen Willemijn van Drie en haar vrouw de allereerste regenboogvlag aan de Churchill-laan. In de jaren daarna volgden steeds meer buurtbewoners, maar het aantal vlaggen steeg pas echt nadat er in 2023 achttien vlaggen waren vernield. De Churchill Pride was geboren en wordt sindsdien alleen maar groter en groter. Zo zijn er dit jaar ook Pride-vlaggen te zien aan de buitenkant van De Wolkenkrabber aan het Victorieplein. Verder prijkt op het dak van de woontoren een grote Progress-vlag met daarop het logo van de Churchill Pride. Waar de Pride dus begon op de Churchill-laan, doet inmiddels een groot deel van de Rivierenbuurt mee. Vorig jaar hingen er 550 vlaggen. "Ik voel enorm veel steun als ik al die vlaggen zie. Ik voel me gehoord, ik voel me gesteund, ik voel me veilig", zegt Istvan. Hij is een buurman van Willemijn en een van degenen die een persoonlijk verhaal heeft geschreven dat te lezen is op de website van de Churchill Pride. "Het initiatief door mijn lieve buurvrouw Willemijn om op te komen voor onze vrijheid en bestaansrecht is werkelijk zo sterk en inspirerend geweest dat het ons allemaal dichterbij elkaar heeft gebracht", is in dat verhaal te lezen. Ook een andere buurman, Rico, heeft een verhaal op de website geschreven. "Zelf ben ik gay, en ik vind altijd al dat we zichtbaar moeten zijn. Want zonder zichtbaarheid wordt er geen rekening met je gehouden. Toen ergens die week de vlag van mijn gevel werd getrokken (het gebeurde op een moment dat ik niet thuis was), was de schok natuurlijk groot." Daarmee doelt hij op 2019, het moment dat zijn vlag vernield werd. Rico en Willemijn vertellen dat die vernielingen er alleen maar voor zorgen dat ze meer vlaggen willen ophangen. En daar is de buurt het duidelijk mee eens, getuige het elk jaar groeiend aantal vlaggen. Daarmee groeit ook de Churchill Pride: inmiddels wordt Willemijn geholpen door tien vrijwilligers en sinds 2024 krijgt ze subsidie van het stadsdeel. Bewoners en ondernemers uit de buurt die een Pride- of Progress-vlag willen ophangen kunnen aanstaande zaterdag en volgende week zaterdag gratis een vlag ophalen bij het buurtteam. Hoewel er nu al flink wat vlaggen hangen, start de Churchill Pride officieel pas op 8 juli. Onderdeel van de Pride is de Roze Koeken Party: een buurtfeest waar roze koeken worden geserveerd.
