To help to promote the sale of War Bonds, Paramount Studios created this short film for the U.S. Treasury in 1945. "A girl is desperate to get to Washington D.C. to be with her lonesome brother, a wounded G.I. She persuades Bing Crosby to let her join his caravan."
A few weeks ago I decided to take a trip down to Cambridge and check out the Centre for Computing History in all it's digital glory. In this video I explore the museum, gawp at hundreds of BBC Micros, play with lots of machines from both the 8 bit and 16 bit eras. Walk past a long of things including a Sinclair C5 and various arcade cabinets and then have a chat to Jason Fitzpatrick, the curator and founder of the museum. I also venture outside the public area of the museum and explore the extensive archives of vintage computer hardware, software, oddware and anything in-between. This is truly silicon heaven. If you get a chance to visit, I highly recommend it. With a plethora of homebrew Russian developers still pushing out contemporary themed games for the aging Sinclair Spectrum, it felt fitting to take a look at yet another one. This time, it's Angry Birds Opposition for the 8 bit Speccy, released at the start of August 2016 in the World of Spectrum forums by kas29. Rather than a direct conversion of the popular mobile game, this version is a twist on the original, with the player in charge of the piggies, in an attempt to shoot those dastardly birds clean out of the air before they reek havoc on the professional construction abilities of our pig like friends. Expose yourself to a large number of people for a long enough time and the quality of those interactions will follow. It's a common frustration of men to never hear back from women, and vice-versa. It's a common frustration for 2010's-era adults to not hear back about job applications. CD-ROM was, and indeed remains, a wonderous thing. But back in the mid '90s it was almost magical. Here was a medium that could hold over 400 floppy disks worth of data in one reflective, rainbow coloured circle. Compact Discs had been used in the music industry for a while by now, but having data on these CDs was a whole new ball game. The excitement of popping in a disc and searching it's seemingly endless supplies of data was staggering, and that's exactly what I want to talk to you about in this Nostalgic Discharge. ☟Sharing☟ If you wish to share this video in forums, social media, on your website, *please do so*! Retro-Tech: According to the adverts - the Panasonic RS-296US could play 2.5 days of music non-stop...that's roughly the same play time to the '1000 songs in your pocket' that the first 5GB Apple iPod boasted in 2001. NOTE 2.5 days of play time equates to 60 hours which would require 20x 180-min cassettes. Whilst these tapes did exist at one point, 180-minute lengths were also very fragile and best avoided. A more realistic play time is to load this machine up with 20x 90-minute cassettes which gives you 30 hours, and that's why I refer to the 'day and a half' of continuous music at the end of video. ----------Links------------- The Antikythera Mechanism I mention at the beginning* is a 2000 year old computer that has been in a number of documentaries - someone has uploaded a BBC video about it here: [Since Deleted] You may have spotted two special cassettes in the video - a Back to the Future Replica "Edward Van Halen" tape and a Guardians of the Galaxy "Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1" - both were provided by my good friend Hugo from Walkman Archive - you can find more info on his tapes here: BTTF: http://goo.gl/k86dod GOTG: http://goo.gl/HMd5GT My Akai "Auto-reverse the hard way" video can be found here: https://youtu.be/2CE_zmpHcWQ My website is here: http://goo.gl/m0i0jg Youtube Audio Library music can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music -------------SUPPORT--------------- This channel can be supported through Patreon https://www.patreon.com/techmoan Patron Supporters usually get to see videos early. ---------------SUBSCRIBE------------------ http://www.youtube.com/user/Techmoan?sub_confirmation=1 * when I mention that the RS296US's place in history is similar to the Antikythera device - this is a patently ludicrously overblown statement merely said for comic effect. ------AFFLIATED LINKS/ADVERTISING NOTICE------- All links are Affiliated where possible. My biggest achievement that day was the simple act of riding to the park though, where I encountered everything from intersections to sidewalks, to steps. I really contemplated just hitting the mountain bike trails today, but I opted instead to go to Birch State Park for a slightly less violent introduction to off-roading. I know you guys want to see me go down in flames, but maybe not today. This time, I brought my stabilizer with a little bendy tripod on the end. Just riding with this contraption is going to be challenging. First, I need to get from the car to the nature path. Despite me riding a unicycle through the park with an action camera and sophisticated looking selfie stick, nobody has said a word to me. Either I look totally unapproachable, insane, or armed and dangerous. Maybe it’s all three, but I’m not in the mood to explain myself anyway. Aside from the occasional root or muddy spot, these paths are pretty smooth. It’s the twists and turns that make them challenging. Free mounting in a confined space is also difficult. One thing I never even considered was ducking under a branch on a unicycle. I’d go back and give it another try, but standing around in this jungle is going to get me infected with zika. I’d better keep moving. This little incline doesn’t look like much, but on a unicycle it seems like an insurmountable obstacle. Going down it is actually not so bad, climbing it is another story. Note to self: Follow your own advice and hydrate. I climbed a 900 foot hill over the weekend and felt relatively fine, but this 2 foot incline has me almost vomiting. Back to work. Although I got excited and fell almost immediately after, I eventually prevailed. Now to get back to the car and greedily gulp melted iced coffee. I thought this shiba inu was going to lose its mind when I passed, but it seemed as confused as its owner. I think at some point I’ve hated everything I got good at. Today, I hate unicycling, and I guess that’s a good sign. It means I care enough about it to keep trying, to the point of absolute exhaustion and frustration. After this little trip to the park though, I think I’m ready to try some real mountain bike trails to shock my system. We’ll see how that works out. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time. Check Out Unicycle.com Stickers and shirts! https://bermpeak.com

CORRECTION: In the video I referred to "JORBA" with an N, instead of a J. That's what happens when you're up late editing. Coming from New York, I’ve always had mixed feelings about New Jersey. Mention its name, and I used to think of angry drivers sipping 20oz RedBulls, cutting each other off in their BMW’s. Although this assessment is 100% correct, it doesn’t quite paint the entire picture. Venture off the beaten path, and you’ll see why New Jersey has been dubbed, “The Garden State”. In the foothills of the Appalachians, lies a mountain bike trail system only minutes from New York City. I drove to Ringwood on Saturday morning to meet with locals, Dave, Bob, Al, and Brian. Al was in charge of leading the ride and keeping us safe. If you ever wondered why full suspension fat bikes even exist, look no further than Ringwood. We headed out towards Skyland’s Ridge, and I got a taste of what North Jersey terrain is like. There were plenty of features to stop at, on and off the trail. I was having a great time with my new friends, and really liking what New Jersey had to offer. The Release 3 I’m riding was lent to me by my friends at Diamondback, who by now understand the implications of lending me a bicycle. I was feeling really good on the release, and getting terrible ideas. This fallen tree was clearly not part of the trail. Riding with locals is definitely the way to go. Having never ridden here, holding Al’s wheel was challenging. He shouted out the turns and features up ahead which ended up being really helpful. If I had gone by myself, I would have missed out on a lot of cool stuff. Luckily I was able to find Dave on Singletracks.com, checking into the trail. A few more miles of pure rock garden and we were back in the parking lot. Al offered to take us on another outing through the New White Line, but he seemed to be the only one crazy enough to do that after the exhausting ride we were just on. I couldn’t say no, so off we went for round 2. This route started off with pure climbing. Al paced himself, nonchalantly pedaling a sustained climb for what seemed like 40 minutes straight. I followed far behind, slowly making my way up. When we were finally done pedaling, it was clear that all that climbing would be well worth it. We had over 15 minutes of downhill switchbacks ahead of us, complete with big freaking rocks everywhere. According to JORBA, the New White Line took 3 years to build by hand. Since then, people all over the Northeast have been checking into Ringwood, to brave the rock gardens of the garden state. On just a few hours of sleep I had ridden over 12 miles and climbed around 1500 feet. 12 miles doesn’t seem like a lot, but this wasn’t on sand or gravel. Riding this place gives your upper body just as much of a workout as your legs. This type of singletrack isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s most definitely not for beginners. With so many trails getting dumbed down and smoothed out, it’s refreshing to see what JORBA is doing here. So thanks JORBA, thanks to my new friends in Ringwood, and thanks to Diamondback for lending me this sweet bike. Oh yeah, and thanks for riding with me today, I’ll see you next time. Welcome to the channel 4 TV show centred around the exciting world of gaming in the early 90s. This was an era when 16 bit was king, and this is a series that created it's own magazine spin off and made Sir Patrick Moore the height of coolness once again. This is episode 1 of series 1, first aired on January 7th 1992 featuring Dominik Diamond and, and I'll be providing light commentary, watching golden joysticks, John Fashanu, Dave Perry (as the monk) and Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES, all whilst eating some pink panther wafers and consuming a cup of tea. Today's game, and indeed, it's box, is Cholo for Acorn's BBC Micro machine. This game is an interesting one. The premise is to free humans trapped in a nuclear bunker by controlling robots on the surface via. a terminal. Your goal is to control these bots to solve puzzles, explore the map and free the human survivors. It's an interesting game which was ported to other 8 bit platforms, including Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC, albeit with varying amounts of colour. For me, the most interesting thing about this game is the box, and it's contents, including the incomplete map of the city you have to guide your robot around. Mmmmmmm, nostalgic game packaging. ☟Sharing☟ If you wish to share this video in forums, social media, on your website, *please do so*!
