Freddy Hardest for the Sinclair Spectrum was one of my favourite ZX Spectrum games, but for a long time I could only remember a vague game I played featuring a bloke with an oversized chin, who crashed in a spaceship and was attacked by potato like people. That's essentially what this game is, although it does have an Ace Rimmer style to it. Join me for a quick play through on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Ebikes have been around for a while, but they haven’t always looked this dope. Companies like Specialized have done the same thing for Ebikes as Tesla has for Electric cars. Now that E mountain bikes don’t look so nerdy, they appeal to a wider audience. Still, there’s a lot of controversy surrounding the whole—you know, battery and motor aspect, which is why Bike Tech of Miami brought a few down to Virginia Key Park for us to test out. VK’s stance on Ebikes and pedal assist bikes is that they’re not allowed, period. They made an exception today for this trial, only allowing very experienced riders and trail builders to test them. We’ll get back to the controversy in a minute, but first let’s take a look at what this bike actually does. First of all, it was super cool of Bike Tech to let us ride their $7500 Specialized ebikes. Their rep, James, saw me doing 360s on my hardtail in the parking lot, so he knew very well what they were signing up for. At about 44 pounds, the ebike made my 6 inch full suspension feel like a carbon hardtail. That is, only when I was handling it and throwing it around. When pedaling, it felt light as a feather thanks to the motor in the bottom bracket. The software in this bike automatically manages the power output so that it’s still you pedaling, but with a little extra help. There are no throttle controls or switches. It feels in every way like a mountain bike, and it gives you the experience of mountain biking. For me, there was no learning curve. As strange as it sounds, the bike didn’t even make me any faster—at least not on technical sections. After getting accustomed to the bike for about an hour, I took it on Highway to Hell, which is a very short section I’ve done in 1:17 on my hardtail. I rode as hard as I could on the Ebike, and still came up a full 6 seconds short of my record. The difference though was that I ended my run with lots of energy to spare. When Juan and I tried to open up to full throttle on this straightaway, James kept right up with us on an analog full suspension bike. The harder you crank on the pedal assist bike, the more it’s limited by your own power. I think this was a very responsible design decision on the part of Specialized, and it makes this bike much safer for beginners, or for people who need the extra help. Overall, I had a very positive experience on this bike, and I didn’t think it was dangerous at all. So, where’s the controversy? Why are these currently banned from most mountain bike trails, including, to my knowledge, every bike park in South Florida? Well, firstly, this bike is kind of like a friendly pitbull that wants you to rub its belly. It has the ability to tear you to shreds. Change a few lines of code, and this thing could pose a serious hazard to analog mountain bikers. All it takes is one rich douchebag with a jailbroken ebike to cause injuries and liabilities to the park and its riders, but personally I think this scenario is pretty unlikely—at least at the moment. Specialized, and shops like Bike Tech are very interested in preserving the mountain biking scene they helped create. But what happens when these are sold at big box stores, with software that makes them nothing more than glorified electric dirt bikes? 5 years down the road, these will cost a fraction of the money, and they will most certainly be more powerful. So, opening the floodgates now for what appears to be harmless could end up becoming a trojan horse. With the limited resources that bike parks have, it’s just not possible to govern what kinds of ebikes are or aren’t allowed on the trails. For now, the safest route is to ban them all. So, am I taking the very myopic stance that we should just ban everything that can be abused? After all, there’s nothing stopping you from driving drunk, or using your kitchen knives to stab people. Maybe I’m scared, or maybe I’m an analog bike elitist. Call me what you will, but until the laws have caught up with the technology it would be pretty irresponsible to allow motors the trails, regardless of the software controlling them. After all, once we allow motors in bike parks, we're kind of sort of eliminating the one motorless place we have left to ride. Most of us are in no rush to do this. Granted, another part of me sees the amazing benefits of pedal assist. Used responsibly, there are a lot of people who could experience mountain biking for the first time, without dying of exhaustion and getting discouraged. Like everything, there are positives and negatives to ebikes. For now, I’m firmly against allowing motors on the trails. So until there’s a clear roadmap for the future of ebikes, we should keep an open mind and proceed with caution. Frank Capra, who came up with the idea. It was released twice a month and shown to military troops as a 20-minute newsreel. Part 2 shows men after liberation from a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines. Reel 2, the liberated men describe the Bataan death march. Part 3, Anopheles Annie brags of her conquests and laments anti-malaria measures, but finds Pvt. Snafu to be a good prospective victim."
Arguably the most specialized area of bike repair is wheel building. You need to know about spoke types, spoke lengths, hubs, rims, rim sizes, lacing, truing, dishing, and a variety of measurements that would make your head spin. Not to mention the expensive specialty tools like truing stands, nipple drivers, spoke wrenches, and dishing gauges. It’s no wonder that some bike shops outsource their wheel repair to specialists. Just carrying the parts is a challenge. To me, wheel builders are like heart surgeons. So, I came up with a terrible challenge: Swap a rim with no specialty tools other than a spoke wrench. We’re not starting with a pile of parts though. I actually do have a bent wheel here which needs a new hoop. First we’ll remove the brake rotor to expose the side of the hub. I said I’d only use a spoke wrench, but I don’t think a torx driver counts as a wheel building tool. In an attempt to make my life slightly easier I’m tying all these spokes together with string. For an experienced mechanic this wouldn’t make things easier at all, but for me it takes the complexity out of lacing the wheel back up. Now I’m removing all of the spoke nipples, which would be way way easier with a nipple driver. I feel like my hand is going to fall off and I haven’t even started fastening the new rim. You can sorta use a screwdriver for this, but it doesn’t have the little point in the middle that keeps it centered. It’s harder than you would think. Now to lace the new hoop on. Even with the spokes tied together this is not easy. In fact, I almost wish I left the string off. This part of the process wouldn’t have been too bad, but I got a few of the nipples stuck inside the rim. To get them back out, some wheels are worse than other. A few times I considered just sawing the rim open and quitting mountain biking. I tried tweezers, magnets, you name it. The only thing that works is shaking the wheel for 20 minutes and hoping for a miracle. Now that I have all my hardware back, the wheel is at least put together. Now it needs to be trued so that all of the spokes have even tension. Since I’m doing this with no tools, I’ll use the front fork and some zip ties. If you’ve never trued a wheel before, it’s basically a matter of finding the biggest bow in the wheel, tightening the spoke on the opposite side of it lightly, and then repeating the process until the wheel is straight. Although it might look straight, we still need to align this rim with the hub laterally. This part is called dishing. Dishing is normally done with a gauge, or even a properly calibrated truing stand. Since I don’t have either, I’ll be using a trick I saw on a forum. Basically, I’m setting a reference point on one side of the wheel, flipping it over, and making sure the hub face is the same distance from the rim on both sides. It’s not. It’s off tremendously. Because it’s off by so much, I’m going to tighten every spoke on the right side, and loosen every spoke on the left side one half turn. 30 minutes later and a couple more passes around the wheel, and I’m as close as we’re gonna get with my homemade precision dishing gauge. One more tedious truing and we’re finally done. That took me over 3 hours and I regret it thoroughly. There’s a little jump in the rim too. It won’t be noticeable while riding, but I’ll know it’s there and it’ll bother me. There are scratches all over my brand new Easton Arc rim, and the nipples look like they’ve been through some kind of S&M clamping ritual. I don’t know what tool I missed the most. Obviously the truing stand would have helped, as a properly calibrated one can pretty much do the whole job. Not only that, but it provides a nice mount at eye level for working on the wheel. The other part that killed me was not having a nipple driver. If you’ve ever smashed your hand in a car door, then you know what it feels like to build a whole friggin wheel with just a spoke wrench. Let’s also consider that I was building a front wheel, which is easier than a rear since it’s pretty much centered over the hub. A rear wheel is offset even more to account for the cassette, so my terrible experience was actually the best case scenario. I could have used really nice tools, and the help of an experienced mechanic, but I thought this video would be useful those who wanted to save a few bucks. Actually, how many bucks are we saving? $35? Ugh… Even if your local shop charges twice this, I can’t recommend doing it yourself without the proper tools and knowledge. The risk of you screwing it up and costing yourself more money is just too great. I hope that at least, this was worth the entertainment. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

The Sinclair ZX81 (or the Timex 1000 as it was sold in the USA), is in many ways, the father of the home micro computer scene. Although it wasn't the first machine Sinclair released, it was certainly the one to achieve significant success and make a massive impact on the lives of British households (and a more limited impact in the States and other countries). The ZX81 delivered micro computing for the everyday man, as it was priced to be affordable regardless of the sacrifices this meant to hardware. Incorporating only 1KB of RAM and a Z80 processor, it was slightly upgraded from the ZX80, but remarkably, even cheaper at just £69.95 back in 1981. It couldn't do much without an additional RAM pack, but it was the ideal machine to delve into BASIC and learn what computers were all about. Join me as I look at it's history, the marketing strategy used to sell over 1.5 million of the units, it's uses, a selection of ZX81 games and what the legacy of this amazing little micro was. And of course, I talk about Sir Clive Sinclair quite a bit as well. ☟Subcribe☟ https://www.youtube.com/user/nostalgianerdvideos?sub_confirmation=1 ✊Support Me! ✊ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nostalgianerd?ty=h Visit my eBay Shop: http://ebay.to/1QQpYyy Buy From Amazon (affiliate): http://amzn.to/1OzCQWR ★Nerd Social★ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/nostalnerd Face: http://www.facebook.com/nostalnerd Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/nostalgianerd Web: http://www.nostalgianerd.com ★Equipment★ Lumix G6 with Vario 14-42mm Lens Nikon D3200 with 40mm Macro Corel Video Studio Ultimate X7 Corel Paint Shop Pro X6 Blue Snowball Microphone ♜Resources♜ First and Last tracks are Night Drive Turbo and Reflection of Paradise by the amazing Rad Universe - https://soundcloud.com/raduniverse Is That You or Are You You by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/reappear/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ Some images sourced from Wikipedia/Wikimedia Magazine archives sourced from archive.org Jim Bagley's demonstration of Dragon's Lair on the ZX81 is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuF4g5CDZQA

The Army-Navy Screen Magazine Number 21, 1944 01 Youth Power: High school students at James A. Garfield High School in Los Angeles work at the Lockheed and Douglas aircraft plants under a special program for the war effort. 02 Private Snafu - Snafuperman: Snafu doesn't have to study, because he is going to crush the Axis all by himself. 03 I Was There - Tarawa: Sgt. Norman Hatch, Marine Combat Cameraman, shares footage from Tarawa. (A lot of his footage is included the Academy Award-winning With the Marines At Tarawa http://archive.org/details/WiththeMarinesatTarawa) The Army-Navy Screen Magazine 21: the entire newsreel The Army-Navy Screen Magazine was produced by the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pictorial Service, under the supervision of Col. Frank Capra, who came up with the idea. It was released twice a month and shown to military troops as a 20-minute newsreel. "By the end of the war, the Army-Navy Screen Magazine reached an enormous weekly audience of 4.2 million. It had become for American soldiers all over the world a communal experience that greatly influenced their perception of the war." It featured short documentary films, news from back home, and short training films like Dr. Seuss' Private Snafu cartoons. I've uploaded the entire Screen Magazine and also each segment as a separate file (some editions are comprised of 1 long film, though). Description at the National Archives: "Reel 1, Part 1, high school students work part-time at the Lockheed and Douglas aircraft plants in Los Angeles. Part 2, Pvt. Snafu scoffs at education, but later learns that brawn is not enough in battle. Part 3, a combat cameraman explains how footage of the Tarawa invasion was taken. (Reel 2) Chaplains hold religious services aboard ships in a convoy. Invasion barges are beached as naval guns fire. Flamethrowers are used to rout Japanese from a blockhouse. Wounded are evacuated by Higgins boats. Prisoners surrender and bulldozers are used to clear an airstrip."

I do want to do a real and proper 50k celebration video, so that will be uploaded eventually. When we soak the chicken in acid, the most interesting part is that the chicken turns white and appears cooked. The strong acid has a similar effect as heat which denatures the proteins that give the chicken its reddish color. NC State's campus is awesome in spring! Here's a timelapse compilation in the theme of House of Cards! I built a panning timelapse rig in order to record video at a FIRST Robotics Competition event, but when I got back to Raleigh, I wanted to do more! Over my last three weeks on campus (until 3:00 a.m. the morning of graduation) I took roughly 40 timelapses in and around NC State. Most of those (33 of them) made it into this final cut, compiled in the style of (and to the music of) House of Cards. Enjoy! Today we are making some pyridine from niacin. We use basic copper carbonate as a catalyst to get things going. There is another method that is a lot more efficient, where a copper chromite catalyst is used and a video on this has been made by Doug's Lab. I opted not to use the copper chromite catalyst because it is a little harder to prepare. Apparently CaO might also be useable though, which would be pretty easy to make/get. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNsqYwzm40M A possibly similar mechanism of catalysis: http://pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/ArticleLanding/2011/DT/c1dt10771b#!divAbstract Forum post that I kind of followed: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=20145&page=2#pid313324 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Merch - https://nilered.tv/store ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join the community: Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/nilered Discord - https://discord.com/invite/3BT6UHf NileRed Newsletter - https://nile.red/home#newsletter You can also find me here: Facebook - https://m.facebook.com/NileRed2 Instagram - https://m.instagram.com/nile.red Twitter - https://mobile.twitter.com/NileRed2 Nile talks about lab safety: https://youtu.be/ftACSEJ6DZA
