It covers portions under control of the Asbestos Corporation; a Canadian company and major player in chrysotile asbestos mining at Thetford. Much of Thetford’s land and mines became part of Asbestos Corporation’s assets as the industry reorganized in 1926. ACL was founded in 1925 by John Leboutillier. ACL still operates as a subsidiary of Mazarin Inc. but no longer participates in asbestos mining. (The company is still facing litigation regarding their former operations.) Use of asbestos started in the stone age and large scale mining began in the 19th century. Manufacturers used asbestos for it’s flame retardant properties making it good for thermal and electrical insulation. It was incorporated it into building materials including roofing, siding, flooring, insulation and as adhesive for tiles until the 1970’s when health hazards became widely recognized. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring toxic carcinogenic and fibrous silicate minerals composed of crystal fibers released through abrasion. Inhalation leads to dangerous conditions including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. The film shows the glory days of asbestos’s mining prior to common knowledge of it’s dangerous health risks. The film follows miners down into the pits, as they detonate charges, operate steam shovels to load Dodge and Mack trucks.The film traces the process for open pit mining and block caving. It explores the grounds opened in 1876 including Bell Mine, Bell Mine Shaft No. 1 and Black Lake. Later sections tour Thetford talc and asbestos mining area. Thetford is the asbestos capital of Canada. Operations at the mine ceased in 1997, and the mine was shut down in 2012. Film opens with the title screen (:16) and a processing plant on slopped terrain with excavated rock piles in the foreground (:25). Black Lake Mine in Saint-Joesph-de-Coleraine (:29) and it’s mill (:30). Piles of tailings intersected by conveyor belts. A processing facility sits below (:36). A section explores block pit and open pit mining (:40). Open pit mining removes ore from open-surface pits in the ground in a process calling for crushing, fiberizing, screening, aspirating and grading. Bloc caving calls for blasting. It’s an underground mining technique requiring undermining sections of the rock allowing it to collapse upon itself. Steam shovels remove overlaying material (1:17). Miners use hand shovels (1:24) and jackhammers (1:42). The blast man throws a hand signal (1:57) prior to setting off primary blasts (2:00). Miners on the ground with hand shovels work near Dodge Hauling Trucks (3:45). Mack trucks (3:58) drive off. Shots of blasting and removal of surface materials (5:04). Carts of ore drive into a tunnel (5:18) and pass Bell Mine (5:28); one of the largest and longest running mines in the area. Bell Mine No. 1 shaft (5:37). Carts move into processing facilities (5:43). Miners drop into the pits in hard hats, work boots, overalls, and protective jackets (6:18). Officials survey miners operating steam shovels (6:07). Miners take reprieve with lunch boxes on a low wooden stoop smiling for the camera man (7:24). Well dressed officials pass (7:50). Miners resurface (7:56). Bell Mine’s processing plant and conveyor belt system (8:54). Miners cross ridges above large pilings of tailings (8:57). Anchor chains pass over chunks of material (942). Footage highlights the scale of the operation (10:01). Workers take a wide stance over the jackhammer (10:04). Carts move off for processing (12:02). Carts exit Bell’s facilities (13:26). The block caving method (13:32) begins at Bell Mine Shaft No. 1 (13:38). Workers filter into the cage for the 500 foot level (13:48). Following them within the elevator going down (14:01) and jack hammering underground (14:53). Materials sifted (15:01-1520) and bagged up (16:05) for rail transport (16:09). Een 020-nummer speciaal voor de moppenliefhebber. De Kleine Komedie gaat de rustige zomerperiode tegemoet en opent daarom de Geinlijn. Wie belt krijgt van een bekende Nederlandse cabaretier een mop te horen.  Een breed scala aan langere, maar ook hele snelle raadsels en moppen zijn aan de andere kant van de lijn te beluisteren wanneer je de Geinlijn belt. Het is niet met een groter doel, gewoon voor een glimlach voor wie dat kan gebruiken, zegt artistiek leider Floor Nicolas van de Kleine Komedie.  Het gratis telefoonnummer is al meer dan duizend keer gebeld op de eerste dag, vertelt Nicolas. En wie je dan aan de lijn krijgt? "Bijvoorbeeld Kasper van der Laan, Youp van 't Hek of Sara Kroos", legt ze uit. "Het zijn eigenlijk de spelers van de komedie." Wie nog niet gevraagd is om een mop in te lezen is Arie van de Velden, de bekende moppentapper van Café De Amstel. Hij bundelde zijn moppen in een boek en verkoopt theaterzalen uit tegenwoordig, maar hij kreeg nog geen belletje van De Kleine Komedie. Maar Floor Nicolas vertelt op beeld: "Het proces loopt nog, dus stuur maar in Arie." In zijn kroeg vertelt hij wat de kracht van een goede mop is. "Het moet vooral een beetje een verhaaltje zijn", legt Van de Velden uit. Ook moet je je publiek zorgvuldig kiezen en ook is niet elke grap voor elke toehoorder. Na een paar keer met de Geinlijn gebeld te hebben weet Arie één ding: hij vindt zijn eigen moppen zeker een meerwaarde voor de lijn. Het idee van deze telefoonlijn is overigens niet nieuw. Het is gebaseerd op een idee uit de jaren '70 van Max Tailleur. Ook toen kon je bellen voor een mop. Floor Nicolas van de Kleine Komedie belde vroeger al met die lijn, maar ook de nieuwe Geinlijn heeft ze al regelmatig geprobeerd. "Al tien keer, maar ook een paar keer om te testen", geeft ze aan. Tijdens de hittegolf van vorige week stierven in België 1.222 mensen meer dan gemiddeld. Dat blijkt uit een voorlopige analyse van de Risk Management Group. Hadden de overheden beter, meer of andere maatregelen moeten nemen? Binnen de federale regering geeft minister Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) alvast kritiek op de bezetting bij het noodnummer 112, een verantwoordelijkheid van minister Quintin (MR). Tussen 18 en 29 juni stierven in België 1.222 mensen meer dan gemiddeld in dezelfde periode. Dat rekende de Risk Management Group (RMG) uit, een overlegorgaan waarin de verschillende overheden vertegenwoordigd zijn. Van de extra overlijdens waren 530 mensen ouder dan 85, maar ook bij de leeftijdsgroep onder de 65 was er een oversterfte van 180 personen. "De piek in sterftegevallen vond plaats op zaterdag 27 juni, toen in totaal 572 overlijdens werden geregistreerd", zegt de RMG. In vergelijking met andere jaren zijn in de 12 onderzochte dagen in totaal 39 procent meer mensen overleden dan gemiddeld. Het gaat om voorlopige en onvolledige cijfers. Volgende week komt Sciensano met meer details. Juiste maatregelen? Vorige week dinsdag gaf het Nationaal Crisiscentrum een reeks aanbevelingen mee: voldoende drinken, zware fysieke inspanningen vermijden en uit de zon blijven. Het crisiscentrum vroeg ook om contact te houden met kwetsbare personen. "Laten we samen solidair zijn en zorg dragen voor elkaar", klonk het. Discussie over 112 Federaal minister van Volksgezondheid Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) reageerde vandaag op de oversterftecijfers. "Dit is een probleem van de samenleving: oudere mensen, alleenwonenden en sociaal kwetsbare mensen zijn het slachtoffer. En dat moet de samenleving aanpakken", zegt Vandenbroucke. "Dat doe je niet met decreten en besluiten." Ik vind dat de 112 niet goed functioneerde in het laatste weekend Vandenbroucke is tegelijkertijd kritisch over de manier waarop het noodnummer 112 bereikbaar was en wijst daarvoor naar zijn collega, minister Bernard Quintin (MR). "Vandaar dat ik mijn collega van Binnenlandse Zaken (Quintin, red.) vraag om sterkere maatregelen te nemen." Vandenbroucke gaf eerder deze week in het parlement al kritiek op de wachttijd bij het noodnummer. "Tijdens het voorbije weekend, het weekend van de hittegolf, op 27 en 28 juni, bedroeg de maximale gemiddelde wachttijd 600 seconden, dus 10 minuten. Dat was zaterdag tussen 12 en 13 uur. Dat is veel te lang", zei Vandenbroucke. Volgens de minister was de bezetting zelfs "iets lager" dan normaal. "Op zondag liep dat aantal op tot bijna 19.300 oproepen, terwijl het gemiddelde rond 6.000 oproepen per dag ligt." Mirakeloplossingen om meer 'calltakers' aan te werven, bestaan er echter niet, zei de minister. "Ik heb geen 3D-printer om hen uit te printen." Vandenbroucke heeft een bijkomende evaluatie aan de Risk Management Group gevraagd over de aanpak van de hittegolf. Het OM gaat niet verder met de zaak van Sabine, die vorige maand haar nek brak. Zij kreeg toen een stuk van een bankstel op haar hoofd, maar de politie heeft niet kunnen achterhalen wie er verantwoordelijk is voor het vallende stuk foam. Het telefoontje van de Amsterdamse recherche voelde voor Sabine afgelopen week als 'een klap in het gezicht'. De recherche liet haar weten dat het OM op basis van het verzamelde bewijs geen verdachte kan aanhouden die verantwoordelijk is voor het vallende blok. Sabine liep zo'n vijf weken geleden nietsvermoedend over de Bloemgracht toen zij een enorme klap voelde. "Ik hoor een keiharde krak in mijn nek en dacht: 'dit is helemaal fout'." Volgens een ooggetuige viel er van grote hoogte een groot blok naar beneden, boven op het hoofd van Sabine. Zij ging tegen de grond en werd met spoed naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Daar bleek haar nek op drie plaatsen gebroken. Geen bewijs gevonden Maar wat er precies is gebeurd, blijft een raadsel. Het blok is naar alle waarschijnlijkheid uit een woning gevallen of gegooid. De ooggetuige die het blok wel zag vallen, heeft niet gezien hoe dat precies is gebeurd. De politie heeft een aantal dagen na het ongeluk onderzoek gedaan, maar kon geen bewijsmateriaal vinden. Later heeft ook de recherche zich over de zaak gebogen, maar ook die kan niet bewijzen hoe Sabine gewond is geraakt. "De laatste weken dacht ik dat het recht zou zegevieren, daar hield ik me aan vast. Dit vond ik echt een klap." Op de vraag of ze het gevoel heeft of de politie er alles aan gedaan heeft, antwoordt ze: "Op die dag niet, nee." Maar wat haar vooral steekt, is dat er niemand naar de politie is gestapt om te vertellen wat er gebeurd is. "Dat er toch niet iemand heeft gezegd: 'Sorry, echt fout. Ik ben geschrokken. Ik dacht: ik duw dat even naar buiten en dan ruim ik het later op'. Dat is mijn allergrootste frustratie." Erkenning Die erkenning zou haar niet alleen mentale verlichting geven, maar ook de kans op een schadevergoeding. De afgelopen vijf weken kon zij niet werken en als zzp'er heeft zij weinig financiële zekerheid. Bovendien zal haar revalidatieproces nog ruim een jaar duren. Haar vrienden zijn daarom een crowdfunding gestart. Een woordvoerder van het OM laat weten dat het helaas niet is gelukt vast te stellen wat er precies is gebeurd.
