In het water bij de Schellingwouderbrug is iemand overboord geslagen van een plezierjacht. De hulpdiensten waren in groten getale aanwezig om te zoeken naar de persoon die in het water terecht is gekomen. Na ruim een uur zoeken werd er afgeschaald. Volgens de Veiligheidsregio omdat de overlevingskans zeer klein is. Rond 12.20 uur kreeg de politie een melding binnen dat er iemand overboord was geslagen bij het water tussen de Oranjesluizen en de Schellingwouderbrug. De hulpdiensten gingen er meteen met veel eenheden op af en er werd na twintig minuten opgeschaald. Er werd naar de drenkeling gezocht met meerdere duikploegen en reddingsboten. Ook vloog er een helikopter in de lucht met een warmtecamera. Na ruim een uur werd er afgeschaald vanwege de overlevingskans van de drenkeling. Normaal ben je met vijf minuten aan de overkant van het IJ, maar door de staking van de pontjes zijn alle fietsers uit Noord aangewezen op de Schellingwouderbrug. Dat zorgt voor extra reistijd, maar de meeste fietsers hebben daar vandaag geen moeite mee. Een van de fietsers die rond acht uur tegen de wind in de Schellingwouderbrug op fietst, zegt dat hij die ochtend wel aan de stakers heeft gedacht. "Good for them. Ik kan wel een stukje omfietsten." Pontschippers leggen vandaag het werk neer vanwege de bezuinigingsplannen van het kabinet op de sociale zekerheid. Het kabinet is van plan om onder meer de WW-uitkering in te korten en de WIA, de uitkering voor langdurig zieken, te versoberen. "Ik snap het wel", zegt een vrouw uit Floradorp terwijl ze door de stromende regen fietst. "Het is jammer dat we even op de blaren moeten zitten, maar ach, we overleven het wel." Door de staking zijn veel fietsers een stuk langer onderweg dan normaal. Een man uit de Buiksloterham is onderweg naar zijn werk op de Nieuwmarkt. Normaal gesproken een ritje van vijftien minuten. "Ik hoop er drie kwartier over te doen", zegt hij. "Ik ben om half acht vertrokken en ik ben er nog niet", zegt een vrouw bovenop de brug. "Dus ik denk dat ik ongeveer twee keer zo lang onderweg ben normaal." Toch lijken de meeste Amsterdammers weinig moeite te hebben met de extra reistijd. "Het is geven en nemen", zegt een vrouw die op weg is naar Weesp. Op het Centraal Station stonden met name toeristen die niet op de hoogte waren of toch nog hoopten op een internationale trein. Een van hen hoopte de trein naar Berlijn te kunnen nemen. "Maar ik denk dat ik vast zit in Amsterdam voor een paar dagen." Heel erg vond hij dat niet. "Geen zorgen, ik moet de moed erin houden." Twee andere toeristen waren minder positief. "We zijn hier een week geweest en hebben een goede tijd gehad hier. Maar we hebben geen waarschuwing en geen informatie gekregen... Als buitenlander weten we niet waar we naartoe moeten en waar we hulp kunnen krijgen." De treinen rijden in heel Nederland niet. Alleen de trein naar Schiphol rijdt vandaag. Ook de Internationale treinen EuroCity, Eurocity Direct, Eurostar Continental en Channel, NightJet, ICE rijden niet door Nederland. New Yorkers held a vigil on Friday for Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant who died by suicide near Springfield, Ohio, last week. Bel came to the United States in 2024 and had an open asylum claim, but after the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration, revoking temporary protected status for the roughly 340,000 Haitians who live in the United States, he was fitted with an ankle monitor by ICE in late July. Shortly afterward, Bel posted on social media, “I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone. Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.” Bel was beginning his freshman year as an honors neuroscience student at Wright State University. His family said the ankle monitor made it difficult for him to play soccer and participate in ROTC and that he was bullied by university classmates. Bel’s father said Pierre called him, expressing humiliation about having to wear the device, on the morning of August 31. Just hours later, he parked his car on the side of the interstate and walked into oncoming traffic.
