Eind maart werd in een bad het levenloze lichaam van de vrouw gevonden. Kort daarna werd haar partner Clen V. (39) aangehouden. Hij ontkent in alle toonaarden betrokken te zijn bij haar dood. De man wordt verdacht van de moord op zijn vrouw. Dat zou hij volgens het OM hebben gedaan door onder andere giftige middelen toe te dienen en haar hoofd onder water te houden, waardoor ze geen lucht meer kon krijgen. "Het gaat om een voorlopige dagvaarding. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat er geen zekere doodsoorzaak is gebleken", zo zegt de officier van justitie. Het is reden voor het OM om alle opties open te houden. "Wij weten ook niet wat het verdere onderzoek ons gaat brengen." Clen V. bij eerste zitting Het was vandaag de eerste openbare zitting in het onderzoek waarbij de verdachte aanwezig was. In een geruite colbert komt V. de zaal ingelopen en probeert met een glimlach wat blikken te vangen van familie en vrienden op de publieke tribune. In de zaal zit ook de familie van het 40-jarige slachtoffer. De vrouw verscheen eind maart niet op haar werk en had vergaderingen gemist. Haar collega's werden ongerust toen ze geen contact kregen en gingen naar haar woning aan de Koninginneweg in Oud-Zuid. Het feit dat haar fiets nog voor de deur staat, maar niemand de deur opendoet, is voor hen reden de politie in te schakelen. Lichaam in heet bad Als zij de woning betreden, vinden ze het lichaam van de vrouw in de badkamer op de eerste verdieping. Ze ligt in bad, het water stroomt nog uit de kraan, maar direct is duidelijk dat ze is overleden. Uit onderzoek blijkt later dat ze lang in het badwater heeft gelegen en vermoedelijk de avond voor de vondst is overleden. Volgens een patholoog bemoeilijkt het feit dat ze urenlang in een heet bad heeft gelegen het onderzoek. In dat onderzoek wordt uitgegaan van vier hypotheses: suïcide, natuurlijk overlijden, een ongeval of een misdrijf. Maar volgens het onderzoeksteam zijn er voldoende aanwijzingen voor dat laatste, en daarvoor zou volgens hen V. verantwoordelijk zijn. De man is meerdere keren gehoord, maar beroept zich nog altijd op zijn zwijgrecht. "Ik blijf bij het door mijn advocaten gegeven advies. Ik wil nergens aan meewerken", zegt V. vandaag. Ook is duidelijk dat de man voor onderzoek in het Pieter Baan Centrum is geplaatst, maar ook daar werkt hij niet mee aan onderzoek. Toch nam hij aan het einde van de zitting het woord: "Ik wil me tot de rechtbank richten. Ik vind het bizar en begrijp niet waarom ik hier ben. Waarom zit ik hier? Het is echt heel moeilijk. Ik leef in een nachtmerrie. En wat mij betreft zijn de feiten superduidelijk en die liegen niet. Ik heb niets te maken met de dood van mijn vrouw", aldus Clen V. "Ik wil naar huis. Ik wil naar onze prachtige dochter. Ik wil samen met familie en vrienden mijn vrouw eren. Ik wil uw rechtbank dan ook vandaag met klem vragen: kijk alstublieft naar de feiten. Laat mij vrij. Ik heb niets, maar dan ook niets met de dood van mijn vrouw te maken. Volgens zijn advocaat Sophie Hof zijn er onvoldoende concrete aanwijzingen om te kunnen concluderen dat het slachtoffer om het leven is gekomen door een misdrijf. "Niets wijst op doodslag of moord. Er zijn zeer concrete aanknopingspunten voor niet strafbare scenario’s en dat komt niet uit onze koker, maar uit de NFI-rapportage." Hof verzocht de rechtbank V. vrij te laten, maar daar gaat de rechtbank niet in mee. "Uw zwijgen is als een schaduw over dit onderzoek", aldus de rechtbank. Het onderzoek gaat verder en de rechtbank dwingt V. onder observatie te plaatsen in het Pieter Baan Centrum. Discriminatie en racisme zijn in delen van Nederland nog altijd aanwezig en diepgeworteld als erfenis van honderden jaren slavernij, en daarin is nog een lange weg te gaan. Dat was de strekking van de toespraken van burgemeester Halsema en premier Jetten tijdens de Nationale Herdenking Slavernijverleden in het Oosterpark. Tegen de verwachting van sommige aanwezigen in heeft Jetten 1 juli niet uitgeroepen tot nationale vrije dag. Halsema begon haar toespraak met een verwijzing naar het shirt van de Oranjespelers, met daarop onder meer leeuwen, tulpen en Surinaamse sieraden en symbolen. Het verdient volgens haar de prijs voor 'het mooiste shirt van het hele toernooi'. "Het ontwerp zegt: dit is Nederland, dit is onze nationale trots." Maar online zorgde het shirt voor 'racistische kritiek'. "Op onze spelers van kleur en ook weer na de wedstrijd tegen Marokko." En die haat komt volgens Halsema niet van een kleine groep mensen. "Meer politici en opiniemakers komen er openlijk voor uit dat ze streven naar witte superioriteit." We leven volgens de burgemeester met 'de lelijke erfenis van honderden jaren slavernij en handel in slaafgemaakte mensen' en in delen van de samenleving is er 'nog altijd een diep verankerd racistisch mensbeeld'. "Samen streven naar rechtvaardigheid" Wat ons land nu echt Nederland maakt, stelde ze zichzelf de vraag. "Is dat de valse trots op koloniale roof en uitbuiting? Zijn dat waanideeën over afkomst en ras? Is dat vol rancune afgeven op minderheden? Is dat nu Nederland, is dat waar wij trots op zijn?" Volgens Halsema kunnen we leren van de Amerikaanse schrijver James Baldwin, die, zo stelde ze, door het leed tegen hem 'en zijn zwarte medeburgers' alle reden had om zijn land de rug toe te keren. Maar dat deed hij niet. "Hij bleef erop aandringen dat witte en zwarte mensen samen zouden streven naar rechtvaardigheid." Ook in Nederland bepalen we samen de toekomst van de samenleving, vervolgde Halsema. "Een land van vrijheid, vooruitgang, democratie, solidariteit en gelijkwaardigheid. Een land dat het verleden recht in de ogen durft te kijken." Daarbij hoort, vindt ze, omkijken naar en opkomen voor een ander. "We bepalen samen de koers van het land waar we trots op willen zijn." Keti Koti geen vrije dag Premier Jetten zei in zijn toespraak dat het slavernijverleden en het heden elkaar elke eerste juli 'ontmoeten'. "De plek waar gedeelde pijn, gedeelde kracht en trots en een gedeelde identiteit samenkomen." Hij zei ervan overtuigd te zijn dat die energie niet meer weggaat. Tegelijkertijd is er volgens hem 'nog een lange weg te gaan'. "Discriminatie en racisme zijn in Nederland nog altijd structureel aanwezig en diepgeworteld", vervolgde Jetten. "Laat ons in actie komen om 1 juli nog steviger te verankeren als een werkelijk nationale herdenking en viering. Op 1 juli herdenken we, de andere 364 dagen handelen we." For decades, Black residents of Evanston were subjected to redlining and other forms of housing discrimination, which prevented them from obtaining bank loans to purchase property. “Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, housing has been the primary way that families have built wealth, and we are in a country where there is 10 times as much wealth in the white community as there is in the Black community. … [T]hat gap is a result, primarily, of this type of dispossession on the grounds of housing,” explains Howard University law professor Justin Hansford. Evanston’s reparations program, funded through donations and a local tax on recreational marijuana sales, grants Black residents and their descendants up to $25,000 for property down payments, mortgages, home repairs and other related fees. In a 5-4 split, the Supreme Court ruled that mail-in ballots do not need to be received by Election Day to be counted, as long as they were postmarked by then. Although a “rare victory for voting rights,” the conservative justices’ assertion that voting by mail is prone to fraud — a disproven theory that Trump blames his loss in the 2020 election for — is “very disturbing,” says Ari Berman, the national voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones. “My fear is that this is going to embolden Republicans to double down on their efforts to try to get rid of mail voting, including the SAVE America Act, Trump’s sweeping voter suppression bill, which he seems desperate to go to any lengths to try to pass,” says Berman, who also comments on the court’s decision to strike down a federal law limiting campaign spending. In de jaren tachtig werden enkele duizenden kinderen via adoptie uit Sri Lanka geadopteerd door Nederlandse gezinnen. Zembla sprak in 2017 met geadopteerden die ontdekken dat er grote verschillen bestaan tussen hun adoptiedossier en de werkelijkheid. Geboortedata blijken te zijn aangepast, pasfoto’s vervalst en gegevens van biologische ouders blijken niet te kloppen. Ook ontdekken sommige geadopteerden dat zij broers of zussen hebben van wie zij het bestaan nooit hebben gekend. De dossiers van kinderen die in de jaren tachtig vanuit Sri Lanka zijn geadopteerd, zijn vaak onvolledig en bevatten volgens betrokkenen in veel gevallen onjuiste of vervalste gegevens. Een voormalig bestuurslid van het inmiddels opgeheven adoptiebureau Stichting Flash schat dat een groot deel van de adoptiedossiers niet in orde is. Zembla beschikt daarnaast over interne documenten waaruit blijkt dat Flash destijds geld heeft betaald aan een Sri Lankaanse moeder die haar kind terug wilde. In dit onderzoek uit 2017 komen verschillende voorbeelden van fouten en onregelmatigheden in adoptiepapieren aan bod. Zo toont Zembla een paspoort waarin handmatig een ander geboortejaar is ingevuld. In een ander dossier staat dat een geadopteerd kind enig kind zou zijn, terwijl later blijkt dat zij nog een oudere zus en een tweelingzus heeft. De meeste adopties vanuit Sri Lanka kwamen in de jaren tachtig tot stand via Stichting Flash. Volgens betrokkenen verliepen adoptieprocedures destijds soms opvallend snel. Voormalig directeur van adoptiebureau Wereldkinderen Zef Hendriks blikt terug op die periode en uit kritiek op de werkwijze van Flash. Ook stelt hij vragen bij het gebruik van tussenpersonen die per adoptie werden betaald. Door de jaren heen verschenen verschillende rapporten met kritiek op de kwaliteit van interlandelijke adoptie. Eind vorig jaar adviseerde de Raad voor de Strafrechtstoepassing en Jeugdbescherming (RSJ) staatssecretaris Dijkhoff van Veiligheid en Justitie om te stoppen met adopties uit het buitenland. Volgens de RSJ brengen financiële belangen binnen het systeem risico’s op illegale en ongewenste praktijken met zich mee. Dijkhoff nam het advies niet over, maar kondigde wel aan dat Nederland beter onderzoek wil doen naar aspirant-adoptiekinderen in de landen van herkomst. Zembla onderzoekt of deze maatregelen voldoende zijn om de kwaliteit van het adoptieproces te verbeteren. Daarnaast onderzoekt Zembla de vraag of de risico’s die volgens de RSJ onderdeel zijn van het systeem van interlandelijke adoptie ook in de toekomst kunnen worden voorkomen. De discussie over buitenlandse adoptie blijft actueel. Op 24 mei houdt de Tweede Kamer een hoorzitting over het advies van de RSJ. Een eerbetoon aan de deze maand overleden beeldend kunstenaar en programmamaker Wim T. Schippers in het Stedelijk Museum. Vandaag wordt daar het laatste kunstwerk waar Schippers aan werkte gepresenteerd: Wim is weg 1942-2026 (onvoltooid). Boezemvriend Titus Muizelaar zal na afloop een gedicht voorlezen. We spraken de acteur en regisseur in café De Jaren, waar hij en Schippers 26 jaar lang samen koffie dronken. Titus Muizelaar beheert als voorzitter van Stichting Wim T. Schippers het cultureel erfgoed van de beeldende kunstenaar. Maar bovenal waren de twee goede vrienden. 26 jaar lang spraken ze elke week af in café De Jaren om lekker te ouwehoeren. Muizelaar zit aan hun vaste tafeltje met een kop koffie. Voor het eerst zonder Wim. Wel ligt er een portret van Schippers op tafel, dat na zijn overlijden op de leestafel van het café heeft gestaan. Muizelaar is zichtbaar geëmotioneerd. "Het is zo raar. Zijn dood raakt me, maar vooral hier. Dit was onze vrijplaats. We kwamen hier 26 jaar lang om elkaar te ontmoeten. Elke zaterdagochtend als ik opstond, wist ik: ik ga naar Wim, ik ga naar De Jaren. Dat zo'n ritueel doorbroken is, raakt mij meer dan de grote kunstenaar die verloren is gegaan. Het was mijn vriend. En ik was zijn vriend." Wim T. Schippers kwam altijd zogenaamd struikelend het café binnen. Muizelaar doet het even voor. "Of hij speelde dat hij mij niet herkende. Dan stopte hij, draaide zich om en zei (doet de stem van Schippers na): 'Zeg, jij hier?'." Volgens de barvrouw mondden de ontmoetingen tussen Schippers en Muizelaar steevast uit in luide discussies. Het laatste halfjaar lazen ze elkaar de rouwadvertenties in de kranten voor. Bespottelijk vonden ze die meestal. "We zullen je voor altijd missen. Hoezo, voor altijd? Hoe weet je dat? Weet je dat nu al? Daar werd dan stevig commentaar op gegeven. Daar beleefden we enorm veel plezier aan." De klokken van Schippers De eerste keer dat Muizelaar werd geconfronteerd met het werk en de denkwereld van Schippers, was in 1971, op het Rembrandtplein. Schippers plaatste daar 25 identieke staande klokken in een kaarsrechte lijn dwars over het plantsoen heen. "Ik was gefascineerd. Ik vond dat zo'n fantastische nieuwe ervaring. Wim vertelde me daar later een grappig verhaal over. De middenstand rond het plein maakte enorm veel bezwaren tegen het plaatsen van die klokken. Die moest daar niets van hebben.
