Perhaps no technological failure is better known than that of the Dvorak keyboard. Since the early 1870s nearly every typewriter used a keyboard with a QWERTY layout, yet most studies show the Dvorak arrangement of keys to be faster. This videos probes the underlying reasons that this arrangement failed to make headway in the marketplace. This video tells the story of why the Dvorak keyboard failed. This is one of three videos in a series on marketplace failures of technological objects. http://www.engineerguy.com/failure.
In 1976 Sony introduced the Betamax video cassette recorder. It catalyzed the "on demand" of today by allowing users to record television shows, and the machine ignited the first "new media" intellectual property battles. In only a decade this revolutionary machine disappeared, beaten by JVS's version of the cassette recorder. This video tells the story of why Betamax failed. This is one of three videos in a series on marketplace failures of technological objects. http://www.engineerguy.com/failure.
How Bell Telephone's PicturePhone, introduced in 1964, flopped yet nearly catalyzed the internet. Technically, it was an amazing achievement: Bell used the existing twisted-pair copper wire of the telephone network -- not broadband lines like today -- to produce black and white video on a screen about five inches square. And, amazingly for the time, it used a CCD-based-camera. It was meant to be the most revolutionary communication medium of the century, driving subscribers to purchase broadband lines, but failed miserably as a consumer product costing Bell a half billion dollars. This is one of three videos in a series on marketplace failures of technological objects. http://www.engineerguy.com/failure.
Introduction to a short series of three videos that takes a "snackable" look at the failure of three famous engineered objects: The Bell System's PicturePhone, which lost the company a half billion dollars, but nearly created the internet; the Dvorak keyboard, which is faster than our current QWERTY arrangement, but failed to gain traction in the marketplace; and the technically superb Betamax video cassette recorder, which lost to an inferior VHS-format machine.

Second part to this video: http://youtu.be/shEk8sz1oOw More links & stuff in full description below ↓↓↓ If the highest power of a function or polynomial is odd (e.g.: x^3 or x^5 or x^4371) then it definitely has a solution (or root) among the real numbers. Here's a nice proof demonstrated by Prof David Eisenbud from the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. At 10:33 Prof Eisenbud intended to say "no rational roots" rather than "no real roots". At 2:52 we should have put (2,5) rather than (2,4). Also, Prof Eisenbud adds that "The Dedekind cut corresponding to the root is: (Rationals x where f(x) is less than or equal to zero) + (Rationals x where f(x) is greater than zero)" Numberline stuff: http://youtu.be/JmyLeESQWGw Dedekind cuts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedekind_cut Support us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/numberphile NUMBERPHILE Website: http://www.numberphile.com/ Numberphile on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/numberphile Numberphile tweets: https://twitter.com/numberphile Subscribe: http://bit.ly/Numberphile_Sub Numberphile is supported by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI): http://bit.ly/MSRINumberphile Videos by Brady Haran Brady's videos subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/BradyHaran/ Brady's latest videos across all channels: http://www.bradyharanblog.com/ Sign up for (occasional) emails: http://eepurl.com/YdjL9 Numberphile T-Shirts: https://teespring.com/stores/numberphile Other merchandise: https://store.dftba.com/collections/numberphile

Printing flexible knee sections for my Iron Man Cosplay in Ninjaflex rubber on a Lulzbot TAZ 3D printer. Painted with Adhesion promoter an chrome paint. The biggest challenge making your own Iron Man power suit - that you can actually wear! – is how much detail. Every expects it to look accurate in terms of colour and shaping, and if you’re going to get inside it latches, strapping and so on is a must but… what else? Do you motorise the faceplate? How much lighting and depth do you give the unibeam? What kind of flexibility and motion do the knees, knuckles and neck need? Well, hopefully you’ll agree I went all out on this Iron Man build. In this video, I will be making n-bromopropane by brominating 1-propanol. The n-bromopropane can then be used in a Grignard reaction to make butyric acid (smell of vomit). Here is the video of me using it in a Grignard reaction: http://youtu.be/_wmx65zQk58 This process can be used as a general procedure to produce bromoalkane. For example, it can be used to make n-bromobutane, which can then be used to make n-Butyl Lithium.

Organic esters tend to be smelly molecules. Some of them are pleasant smelling, while others are quite pungent and unpleasant. In this video, we will be using acetic anhydride to acetylate 1-pentanol to make banana flavoring. The same reaction can be carried out on several other alcohols, however, to make other scents, such as mushroom, orange, or pear.

All of the English dialogue in "Star Wars", split into words, and sorted alphabetically. Fun facts: The word "lightsaber" only appears once in this film. There are 43m5s of spoken English, 81m39s of other. The most common word is "the", of course, said 368 times. The word with most screen time is "you", at 52.56 seconds. There are 1695 different words, and 11684 total words. The longest words are "responsibility," "malfunctioning", "worshipfulness", and "identification", all 14 letters. I labeled the words manually (!) using some software I wrote specifically for the purpose. This is the Special Edition to troll Han-shot-first purists. Everyone knows the orig is the most legit.
