Om 22.28 uur sloeg de bliksem in en ontstond er een behoorlijke brand. Op een video die AT5 kreeg toegestuurd, zijn mensen te horen die geschrokken gillen door de inslag. De lucht kleurde wit door de hevigheid van de blikseminslag. Het dak van het huis in de Tweede Jan van der Heijdenstraat moest meer dan een half uur lang geblust worden. De brandweer liet weten dat er geen gewonden vielen.  ''Het was serieus'', zegt buurman Roel vanmiddag. ''Een knal en echt een milliseconde erna was de inslag." Hij wist het zeker: dit moet in onze buurt zijn. ''Ik woon hier schuin tegenover. Gek genoeg heb ik er nooit aan gedacht dat het ook wel eens mijn huis zou kunnen zijn. Maar ja, ik woon vijftig meter verderop." Zijn buurtgenoten moesten buiten in de stromende regen wachten. Terwijl de brandweer bezig was, schoten de bliksemflitsen nog door de hemel. Enkele buurtbewoners in de Bilderdijkstraat proberen zich te verzetten tegen de kap van een iep die bij de kruising met de Jacob van Lennepstraat staat. De boom, geplant in 1966, wordt komende nacht geveld. "In deze straat is weinig schaduw en veel uitstoot, deze boom biedt een balans." De boom is niet de eerste in de straat die verwijderd wordt. Recent gebeurde dat ook al bij drie bomen aan de overkant. Alleen de stammen van die bomen zijn er nog. De bomen zijn gekapt omdat ze ziek waren. Maar de boom die komende nacht op de nominatie staat, is volgens buurtbewoner Lisette nog kerngezond. En daarom protesteert ze tegen de kap ervan. 'Stop', 'help me' en 'laat me staan', is te lezen op stukjes karton, papier en katoen die om de boom zijn gehangen. Volgens de gemeente is de boom inderdaad niet ziek, maar is er wel een probleem met de stam. Die zit niet goed in de grond gefundeerd, waardoor er kans is dat de boom omvalt. Volgens een woordvoerder is er sprake van een 'beperkte veiligheidsmarge' tijdens een storm. "Dit vormt een verhoogd risico voor de omgeving. Duurzaam behoud is niet aan de orde vanwege een gevorderd ent-onderstam probleem." Een straatbeeld toont geparkeerde fietsen, auto’s en motorfietsen voor gebouwen met meerdere verdiepingen, winkels en luifels; er rijdt een wit bestelbusje voorbij. In de linkeronderhoek staat het AT5-logo. Toch vindt Lisette dat de boom moet blijven staan. Volgens haar is de kap van de boom niet rechtmatig, omdat de gemeente in de kapvergunning het verkeerde adres zou hebben gemeld. Maar de gemeente zegt desgevraagd dat een vergunning voor de kap van meerdere bomen in de buurt is aangevraagd. Daarin is onder meer het ID van deze boom vermeld. Volgens Lisette is het belangrijk dat de boom blijft staan: "Er zijn weinig schaduwplekken, er is veel verkeer, veel uitstoot, veel geluidsoverlast. Deze boom biedt daarin een balans." De gemeente is verplicht om de boom te herplanten als is nog niet zeker of de nieuwe boom op exact dezelfde plek komt te staan. "Daarnaast is de boom die we terugkrijgen veel kleiner", zegt Lisette. A mass-produced gasoline engine developed and built in China by automotive giant Geely. This engine achieves an incredible thermal efficiency of 48.41%. Of course, with this efficiency, it’s not surprising that this engine also powers the current Guinness World Record holder for the most fuel-efficient mass-produced hybrid (non-plug-in) vehicle. Allow me to put the thermal efficiency into perspective: the best Toyota has achieved in their latest generation of dynamicforce engines is 41%. Nissan achieved 42% in their e-power system, where the engine only ever acts as a generator. Improving efficiency beyond 40% is an area of ridiculously diminishing returns. A 1% improvement here is already massive, yet Geely somehow managed to outperform Toyota by an incredible 7.4%, and in this video we will explain exactly how that was done. First up, the very heart of the engine, the bore and stroke. Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact bore and stroke because Geely never published it, but they have published the engine displacement, number of cylinders and the stroke-to-bore ratio of 1.39:1, which tells us that the stroke is 39% larger than the bore. Based on these numbers we can calculate that the bore is 70 millimeters and the stroke is 97.4 millimeters. As we can see this is a ridiculously undersquare engine, probably the most undersquare mass-produced gasoline engine I have ever seen. To put it into perspective here’s the Geely 1.5 I-HEV engine next to an old-school muscle car engine. We will use this juxtaposition to explain the benefits and the reasons behind such an undersquare design. In an undersquare engine, we have a small bore, which means that we are limited in the amount of air and fuel we can pack in there. We are delivering a small punch. At the same time the very long stroke means that we will be able to extract more of the energy of our small punch because our piston has a longer distance to cover while traveling downward and extracting energy. But because the stroke is longer the piston must travel faster to cover it, which is why we can’t rev as high because at some point pistons speeds get so high that the engine destroys itself. But with an undersquare engine we usually don’t even want to rev to high because our priority isn’t making power it’s extracting all the energy from our clean little punches But the undersquare anatomy alone isn’t enough to achieve the incredible thermal efficiency, you also need cringey branding, and so this engine also features something called a Fire Tornado Combustion System and a duckbill intake. In reality what this is is an intake anatomy that results in increased air velocity and air tumbling which improves air and fuel mixing leading to optimized combustion. To further optimize combustion the injection pressure has been increased to 500 bar which improves fuel vaporization. And to squeeze in every last bit of the energy of our super optimized air and fuel mixture, we have a 15.5:1 compression ratio and a deep miller combustion cycle. On top of this we have laser-clad valve seats, which are directly fused onto the cylinder head instead of being pressed in like traditional valve seats. This both improves cooling and enables more freedom of intake port design. The engine also features advanced surface treatments and machining as well as DLC coatings on many critical engine surfaces and moving parts for an impressive reduction in friction. And there you have it. 48.41% thermal efficiency. At least, that’s the story according to the press release. Now, if you’ve been following engine development in the last 10 years, you have probably noticed that this engine is about as innovative as a brick. See the direct comparison with a Toyota Dynamic Force engine in the video to see my point. All the technologies present on the Geely 1.5 I-HEV engine can be found on engines from various European, Japanese and US manufacturers and they most certainly do not explain an efficiency improvement of 7.4%. So where does the improvement come from? It comes from a deep Miller cycle. It comes from there because that's the only place where it can come from. Na opnieuw een hete dag zijn gisteravond en vannacht zware onweersbuien over het land getrokken, plaatselijk met hagelbuien en zware windstoten. Overal in het land ging het los.

Een zeer zware onweersbui trok gisteravond en vannacht over de stad. Op verschillende plekken sloeg de bliksem in, onder meer in De Pijp, Zuidoost en op de Pontsteiger. Ook kreeg de meldkamer honderden meldingen van wateroverlast en stormschade. In totaal werkte de brandweer ruim duizend meldingen af.
