In deze Tegenlicht-aflevering neemt Tim Marshall ons mee naar de kern van geopolitiek: de manier waarop landschap, grenzen, natuurlijke hulpbronnen en strategische ligging het gedrag van wereldmachten vormgeven. De wereld is een periode van oorlogen en toenemende spanningen binnengetreden. Zo stelt hij dat achter vrijwel iedere internationale crisis een geografische werkelijkheid schuilgaat. Een die veel minder snel verandert dan de politieke retoriek. Bergen, rivieren, zeeën, vlaktes en natuurlijke barrières bepalen al eeuwenlang welke kansen en beperkingen landen hebben, en dat is nog altijd zo. Marshall legt uit waarom Rusland historisch zoveel waarde hecht aan bufferzones aan zijn westgrens en welke rol grondstoffen en toegang tot havens spelen in de oorlog met Oekraïne. Wie de wereldpolitiek wil begrijpen, doet er daarom goed aan minder naar de speeches van politici te luisteren en vaker naar een landkaart te kijken. Afgelopen woensdag waren er twee zware aardbevingen in Venezuela. Ziekenhuizen zijn overbelast en mensen zijn veelal op familie en zichzelf aangewezen voor hulp. Inmiddels zijn er ruim duizend doden.

De Venezolaanse Irene woont op IJburg, maar haar gedachten zijn alleen maar bij haar thuisland. Dat werd woensdag getroffen door de twee zwaarste aardbevingen van de afgelopen honderd jaar. Het dodental staat op dit moment op 920 en er zijn nog altijd duizenden mensen vermist. Irene heeft veel familie in het land wonen. Zij zijn gelukkig ongedeerd en zijn nu vooral bezig met het helpen van anderen. "De plek met de meeste schade ligt eigenlijk hier", vertelt Irene van Carmen terwijl ze op een afbeelding van Caracas wijst, die aan haar muur hangt. "Het appartement van mijn tante is helemaal weg. Ik heb contact met haar, maar ook met mijn moeder. Zij zit ook in Caracas. Ik werd wakker en ze zei: ik heb zeven bejaarde vrouwen in mijn huis. Ze gingen eerst terug naar hun huizen, maar voelden zich daar niet veilig." Hulp met zoeken en donaties Verschillende landen, waaronder Nederland, hebben inmiddels hulp gestuurd naar het getroffen gebied. Ook wordt er massaal gedoneerd. "En ook qua technologie worden er bepaalde groepen gevormd om kennis te delen. Verder zie je veel mensen ter plekke helpen en dat is wel heel mooi, dat je een maatschappij ziet die samen is", vertel Irene zichtbaar geëmotioneerd. Het zoeken naar overlevenden onder het puin is nog altijd volop bezig en dat is niet zonder gevaar. "Het ding is dat de beweging nog niet klaar is. Er kan nog een golf komen en sommige gebouwen zijn niet stabiel. Hoewel Amsterdam natuurlijk veel Oranjefans telt, zijn er ook behoorlijk wat Amsterdammers die (ook) juichen voor een ander land tijdens het WK. Omdat het WK groter is dan anders, doen er veel landen mee die nog nooit, of niet vaak, op zo’n groot toernooi hebben gespeeld. Vandaag spreken we Nashira Muskaria, die ons vertelt over hoe het is om als Colombiaanse in de stad te wonen. "Familie is bij ons niet alleen je gezin, maar het is veel groter dan dat", vertelt Nashira. Op de bank zitten twee jonge meiden. Ze voelen zich duidelijk thuis terwijl ze met hun voeten omhoog zitten en een spelletje via de televisie spelen. Het zijn nichtjes van Nashira, maar ze introduceert ze als zusjes. Ze woont in West samen met haar partner. Ze kennen elkaar via de rondvaartboot waar ze allebei op werken. Terwijl ze over hem vertelt, straalt ze. Liefde is een belangrijk aspect van de Colombiaanse cultuur. Alles wat ze doen is met passie, iets wat in het voetbal ook vaak terug te zien is. Passie Er is in de Colombiaanse cultuur passie voor heel veel dingen. De huisdieren waar je lief tegen praat of de muziek die er wordt gemaakt. Een hoofdrolspeler hierin is een instrument dat volgens Nashira vooral aan de kust van Colombia wordt gebruikt, en dat is de accordeon. "De ritmische tonen klinken als het hart", daarom is deze muziek het voorbeeld als het gaat over liefde en passie uitstralen. Veel mensen weten vaak wel dat er salsa en bachata wordt gedanst in Colombia. Al is deze muziek daar dus niet echt voor bedoeld. "Colombianen komen hier naartoe om kansen te krijgen en weten dan voor zichzelf dat ze met een taal als Engels veel meer kanten op kunnen. Je spreekt overigens tegenwoordig in Amsterdam overal Engels." Toch laat Nashira weten dat zoiets als voetbal een land ook verbindt. "Als ik iemand op straat tegenkom met Colombiaanse roots, dan stop ik wel even om een praatje te maken." Colombia speelt vannacht om 01.30 uur de laatste poulewedstrijd tegen Portugal. Uitvaartondernemer Peter van Schaik laat zien hoe die machine - die je onder het bed of kist legt - normaal gesproken zorgt dat het lichaam koel blijft. Met deze temperaturen is dat een stuk lastiger. "Vooral in huizen die heel warm worden, zien we dat de machine het lichaam niet meer koel kan houden. Door de warmte kan het lichaam dan sneller ontbinden", legt hij uit. Daarom adviseert Van Schaik om een lichaam eerst een paar dagen in een koelruimte te leggen in een uitvaartcentrum. Maar ook op en rondom het graf is het opletten. "Op de begraafplaats staan mensen rond het graf. Zeker bij het laatste woord kan dit lang duren. Ook moet de overledene daar vaak in de volle zon heen gedragen worden. Recipe Ingredients - 2 bunches, basil - 30g parmesan - 15g pecorino romano - 2 cloves, garlic - salt to tast - 35g toasted pine nuts - 3 Tbsp olive oil Method 1. Pick the basil from their stems. Place into a large bowl. Finely grate the cheeses, add to the basil and set aside. 2. In a small food processor, add the peeled garlic, pine nuts, a pinch of salt and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Blend on high for 10-15 seconds until blended but not completely smooth. 3. Add all of the cheese and basil to the blender with another tablespoon of olive oil and blend. Taste and adjust the seasoning as required. Place the finished pesto into a jar with a tight fitting lid or enjoy straight away tossed through fresh pasta.
