Part of the Indian Summer at the British Museum http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/indian_summer/events_programme.aspx
Walk through Ron Mueck’s sculpting process as his hyperrealistic, self-portrait Mask II is installed beside the Easter Island statue Hoa Hakananai'a at the British Museum. This installation brings to light the limitless nature of what can be achieved in sculpture through scale, materials and texture, and how these elements are common throughout history and humanity’s pursuit of breaking the bounds of human limitation. Originally made for Statuephilia: Contemporary sculptors at the British Museum. The exhibition included works by Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Ron Mueck, Marc Quinn and Noble and Webster.
Marc Quinn remembers his visit to the Tutankhamun exhibition at the British Museum. He shares his delight in coming back to exhibit a work inspired by that experience and the surrounding ancient Greek sculpture. Curator Peter Higgs draws parallels with ideal female nudes created in 4th-century BC Greece. http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/london_exhibition_archive/statuephilia/about_this_display.aspx
Tim Noble and Sue Webster describe themselves as artists of circumstance. Walking through the Egyptian galleries they were inspired as to how to use the mice, shrews and toads they had collected. Curator Neal Spencer highlights the appropriateness of such a display, given that in Ancient Egypt animals were bred, slaughtered and mummified in their millions. http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/london_exhibition_archive/statuephilia/about_this_display.aspx
Damien Hirst explores the universal symbolism of the skull, and the futility of decorating them to make death more palatable. Damien and curator Colin McEwan compare this approach to Meso-American cultures where mosaic skulls allude to both death and life. Originally made for Statuephilia: Contemporary sculptors at the British Museum. The exhibition included works by Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Ron Mueck, Marc Quinn and Noble and Webster.
Antony Gormley speaks of how the British Museum has been the foundation of what sculpture means to him. Neil MacGregor (Director of the British Museum) reflects on how Gormley's work and countless examples in the Museum's sculpture collection, one of the greatest in the world, have the aspiration to be much more than just human. http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/london_exhibition_archive/statuephilia/about_this_display.aspx

In AD122 Hadrian ordered a mighty frontier system to be built across the north of Britain. The result was Hadrian's Wall, a 73 mile barrier stretching from the Solway Firth on the west coast of Britain to the River Tyne on the east coast. http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/london_exhibition_archive/archive_hadrian.aspx
For many years Hadrian was perceived as a peace-loving admirer of Greek culture and customs, a philhellene. But the one statue on which this long-standing perception was based is not all that it should be. British Museum curator Thorsten Opper and conservator Tracey Sweek investigate. http://www.britishmuseum.org/the_museum/museum_in_london/london_exhibition_archive/archive_hadrian.aspx
