Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently embroiled in a corruption scandal in Israel, is up for reelection. On Friday, after two Israeli soldiers were killed at a checkpoint near Hebron, just days before Israeli polls are set to open, Netanyahu announced heavy restrictions on the movement of Palestinians out of the West Bank. Since then, Israeli forces have detained and expelled thousands of Palestinian residents from the area and begun home demolitions to clear the way for future Israeli settlements. "The reason that they're doing this is because this entire election is about who is going to be tougher on Palestinians," says Palestinian human rights lawyer Diana Buttu. "What [Netanyahu is] trying to do in the lead-up to this is say to Israelis that 'I'm the only person who can provide you with security.' So, while lighting the place on fire, he's also selling water." Buttu explains that Netanyahu's opponents across the Israeli political spectrum are equally punitive toward Palestinians. "The fact that you have all of these parties that are advocating major war crimes and nobody is blinking says something very deep about Israeli society, but also about an international community that has fostered this and that has allowed this to brew for all of these years." Candidates from the Student List, who are not students themselves but largely first-time politicians selected by student-led popular assemblies, won a majority of seats in Sunday's parliamentary elections, marking a seismic shift in Serbian politics. Their victory comes two years into a student-led movement sparked by the collapse of a roof at a train station in the city of Novi Sad, which killed 16 people. The disaster became a focal point for anti-government protests over corruption, cronyism, political violence and democratic backsliding. "Students really changed the whole political landscape of the country, and maybe even more important, they changed political imagination. They changed our understanding of what's politically possible for all of us," says journalist Lela Vujanić, who speaks to us from Belgrade about the groundbreaking elections. "This was a great democratic opening and democratic awakening, not only for the students, but for the rest of the country also." Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest for plotting a coup against Lula four years ago. The younger Bolsonaro, who narrowly defeated Lula in the first round of voting earlier this month, is now refusing to concede. Lula's surprise comeback comes after weeks of student-led organizing and campaigning on his behalf, and amid accusations that U.S.-based tech companies were suppressing Lula's reach online in favor of his Trump-aligned opponent. "The amount of organizing, the amount of marches and rallies, campaigning, pamphlets that we've seen the last three weeks has been something that I have never seen in my entire life, ever, covering elections for decades in so many different countries. It is absolutely unprecedented," says Brazil-based journalist Michael Fox. "It is an absolute game-changer for the region." Miljoenen Israëliërs gaan morgen naar de stembus voor de eerste parlementsverkiezingen sinds de aanslagen van 7 oktober, het genocidale geweld in Gaza en de daaropvolgende oorlogen met Iran en Hezbollah. Omdat er niet vanuit het buitenland gestemd mag worden, vliegen naar schatting meer dan 50.000 Israëliërs terug om een stem uit te brengen, veel van hen tegen Netanyahu. Zo ook de 54-jarige Guy Spigelman. "We hebben een nieuw begin nodig." Guy gaat wel vaker terug naar Israël, maar deze reis legt hij speciaal af om tegen Netanyahu te stemmen. "Hij heeft bizarre wetten ingevoerd om de rechterlijke macht kapot te maken", legt hij uit. "Hij is corrupt, en daarnaast was hij ook nog premier tijdens de grootste aanslag op het Joodse volk sinds de Holocaust. Ik wil ooit terug naar Israël, maar dan wel in een Israël dat het goed doet." En dus is de maat nu vol. Naast Guy zijn er wereldwijd nog tienduizenden Israëliërs die vanwege dezelfde reden richting Israël vertrekken. Volgens de organisatie Fly&Vote, zijn dat er meer dan 50.000. De organisatie zet zich in om ervoor te zorgen dat het makkelijker wordt voor Israëlische mensen in het buitenland om alsnog te kunnen stemmen. Dat is iets waar premier Netanyahu geen voorstander van is, zijn partij probeert de organisatie als illegaal te bestempelen. Ook Guy kent meerdere mensen die hetzelfde doen als hij. "Bijna al mijn vrienden hier in Amsterdam die Israëlisch zijn, gaan terug. Dat zijn er best wat, en zij hebben ook weer vrienden die teruggaan." Het zijn spannende verkiezingen; in de huidige peilingen komt tot nu toe nog geen sterke favoriet naar voren. Net als in Nederland zal er in Israël een coalitie gevormd moeten worden. Als dat niet lukt met de partij van Netanyahu en zijn bondgenoten, zou het nog wel eens ingewikkeld kunnen worden. In Serbia, the student-led opposition movement won the parliamentary snap election by a surprisingly high voter's turnout. It is called the “Student List” (in Serbian: Studentska Lista) and grew out of student protests against Serbia's long-standing leader Aleksandar Vucic. For 14 years, Vucic has dominated Serbian politics: He has brought Serbia closer to Russia and China and moved it further away from the EU. After more than two years of protests, many people in Serbia, especially young people, wanted a change in power. According to the latest projections, the Student List has received 53% of the vote, giving it an absolute majority in parliament (as of 26 October 2026). This means it could make major changes. Voter turnout in this election was also historically high, at almost 70%: more people in Serbia have not turned out to vote in over 30 years. However, there are hardly any students on the Student List itself. The opposition movement behind the list has no leadership positions of its own and makes its decisions through grassroots democracy. The list mainly includes university teachers, doctors and artists. These are the people chosen by the student movement to govern the country in line with its goals. Its election platform is a short, 11-point program that aims to restore the rule of law and democracy and fight crime and corruption in Serbia. However, it is still unclear who will become prime minister. The Gen Z movement has not yet made any decisions about who will fill key positions.
