Hospitals are rapidly reaching a breaking point, and thousands of survivors have been left homeless. Reporter Andreína Chávez's building was one of the countless residences in Venezuela's capital Caracas and its surrounding region that were damaged by the massive quakes. Chávez was on the street when the earthquakes struck, and says she "saw at least three buildings partially collapse right in front of [her]." As Venezuelans band together to find survivors, the country is calling for international support and resources to step up critical rescue and recovery efforts. "We weren't prepared for a disaster of this magnitude," says Chávez. "Venezuela is a country that has been under U.S. sanctions … as well as a country that has an infrastructure that is very deteriorated. We have public services that are very deteriorated, and all of that has been something that has really added to this tragedy." The court ruled 6 to 3 along partisan lines to sanction so-called metering at the southern border, which allows immigration officers at ports of entry to block asylum seekers from setting foot on U.S. soil. "In a time of increasing conflict and climate catastrophe, this will result in many more deaths," warns Erika Pinheiro of Al Otro Lado, the lead plaintiff in the case. When the turnback policy was first introduced, recounts Melissa Crow of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, who served as co-counsel for the plaintiffs' case, many asylum seekers became "so desperate that they ended up trying to enter between ports of entry, either by swimming across the Rio Grande or by traversing the desert under harrowing conditions, and many, many of them didn't make it to the other side." Een lekkage bij de bovenburen heeft de stroomvoorziening van Reptielenopvang Zwanenburg platgelegd. Dat is een flinke tegenvaller voor eigenaar Rob Dumont, die al ruim veertig jaar reptielen opvangt. Toen Rob Dumont gister zijn reptielenopvang binnenliep, stapte hij met zijn sneaker in een laag water. Zijn hele zaak was doorweekt en dit bleek te komen door een kapotte wasmachineslang van de bovenburen. Vrijwilligers zijn direct aan de slag gegaan om de schade te beperken. Met speciale waterstofzuigers werd zoveel mogelijk water weggehaald. "We zijn er gisteren de hele dag mee bezig geweest en vandaag nog steeds een beetje", vertelt Dumont. De stroomuitval zorgt wel voor enige onrust bij de dieren. Zo verblijven de gifslangen momenteel in het donker. Als ze ineens worden geconfronteerd met licht en beweging beginnen ze te ratelen. "Deze ratelt normaal nooit. Daaraan zie je dat ze gestrest zijn." Naast praktische uitdagingen kijkt de opvang aan tegen forse kosten. Hoe groot de financiële schade precies is, is nog niet duidelijk. Dumont verwacht dat de verzekering een deel zal vergoeden, maar vreest dat niet alle kosten gedekt zullen zijn. Via sociale media zijn inmiddels de eerste donaties binnengekomen. "Daar zijn we natuurlijk heel blij mee", zegt hij. "Maar het blijft een bijzondere situatie. Along with a growing nostalgia for '90s tech like point-and-shoot cameras and MP3 players, parents are increasingly turning to Wi-Fi landlines to avoid smart phones. These Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones look and feel like old-school corded phones but run over your home internet connection. This episode, Wirecutter baby and kid editor Rachel Hurn explains why families are embracing these devices. She shares how her own Wi-Fi phone, a Tin Can, has given her eight-year-old independence to set up playdates and created an environment for undistracted conversations. Op het Bijlmerplein zagen Oranjefans in een café hoe het Nederlands elftal er met een 3-1 winst vandoor ging tegen Tunesië: "Ze hebben gewoon goed gespeeld, echt netjes. " Het tijdstip van de wedstrijd om 01.00 uur weerhield Oranjefans er niet van om de wedstrijd gewoon te volgen in Eetcafé 100% Zuidoost op het Bijlmerplein. "Morgen ben ik vrij, dus het is zeker niet laat", zegt een supporter die kort daarvoor nog Curaçao zag verliezen tegen Ivoorkust. "Morgen is vrij, want het is vrijdag", lacht hij. Hij is niet de enige die Oranje komt aanmoedigen. In de kroeg hebben zich zo'n 25 supporters verzameld die onder het genot van een biertje de wedstrijd bekijken. Aan vertrouwen in het Nederlands elftal bij de groep geen gebrek: "Winnen gaan ze sowieso". Vliegende start Oranje scoort in de eerste helft twee keer tegen Tunesië. Ellyes Skhiri schoot de bal in de derde minuut in eigen goal. Brian Brobbey trapte in de zevende minuut de 0-2 erin. Het doelpunt is zijn derde treffer dit WK. "De mannen zijn goed op weg", zegt een fan die met zijn vrienden aan de bar zit. "We moeten sterk zijn en we moeten harder komen." Een man die verderop met zijn vriendin naar de wedstrijd kijkt is tevreden over de eerste helft: "Een vliegende start, dat is mooi." Marokko nu de tegenstander In de tweede helft scoorde Tunesië kort na rust door een kopbal uit een hoekschop. Ondanks het tegendoelpunt wist Oranje in de 62e minuut een derde doelpunt eruit te slepen. Jan Paul van Hecke maakte de treffer vanuit een hoekschop. Door de winst op Tunesië is het Nederlands elftal groepswinnaar, waardoor het in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag het opneemt tegen Marokko. Volgens de Oranjefans in het eetcafé moet die wedstrijd voor Nederland wel te winnen zijn. "We gaan ze gewoon afmaken", zegt een van hen na de wedstrijd.
