Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency as rescue workers frantically search for survivors in the rubble of "dozens" of collapsed buildings. Historian Alejandro Velasco, who has family in Venezuela, reports that "many Venezuelans abroad are trying to get in touch with their loved ones in Venezuela and are having a hard time doing so." The current death toll is at 164, with 1,000 people injured, but the U.S. Geological Survey warns there's a high chance the death toll could rise into the tens of thousands — or even top 100,000. Ukraine has wanted to be part of the EU since the 1990s. But that desire became far more urgent after Russia’s invasion of the country – for its population too. While around 60% wanted to join the EU in February 2022, a month later that figure had jumped to 90%. But that popular support won’t really speed up the accession process. It’s hard to say how long the negotiations will take - especially considering Russia’s invasion, which makes potential membership way more complicated. And noone can say when the war will end. But one thing is pretty certain: talks with the EU will likely take many years. By the way: the EU has also started accession negotiations with Moldova as well as Ukraine. De aftrap was pas om middernacht, maar een van de zalen van theater De Meervaart in Osdorp was al ruim van tevoren goed gevuld. De zaal zat afgelopen nacht vol met supporters van Marokko, die vol spanning en enthousiasme keken naar de wedstrijd Marokko-Haïti. En dat begon niet helemaal zoals verwacht, maar het kwam helemaal goed. "Het voelt een beetje als een grote familie in een grote zaal", vertelt een jonge supporter. "Het is superleuk." Aan zelfvertrouwen is, na de goede prestaties van het Marokkaanse team de afgelopen jaren, geen gebrek onder de supporters. "Ze gaan sowieso met 4-0 winnen", zegt een man. Toch begint de wedstrijd anders dan gehoopt; na een mooi doelpunt van Haïti staat Marokko al snel op achterstand. Dat mag het optimisme in de zaal echter niet drukken: "We zijn net begonnen, dus we hebben nog goede hoop", klinkt het. Dat zelfvertrouwen blijkt in de eerste helft terecht, wanneer sterspeler Hakimi gelijkt maakt. Helaas is dat van korte duur, want Haïti komt weer op voorsprong na een wereldgoal. Vlak voor de rust maakt Saibari toch weer gelijk. "Echt ongelooflijk", zegt een teleurgestelde fan. "Het had al 3-0 voor Marokko moeten staan. Ze kunnen niet scoren en ze laten de doelpunten vallen. Maar ik maak me geen zorgen hoor!" En zorgen zijn ook niet nodig, in de slotfase van de wedstrijd wint de ploeg namelijk met 4-2. Maar daar hebben de fans dan ook geen seconde aan getwijfeld: "Uiteindelijk komt het altijd goed. Het is Marokko, hè", zegt een fan. Een ander: "Dima Maghreb, begrijp je?" Nederland is natuurlijk rijk aan goeie restaurants met keukens van over de hele wereld. En net als het WK, verbindt eten ook. Daarom duiken we deze weken een aantal wereldkeukens in! 🧡 Op meerdere plekken in ‘t land (Amsterdam en Den Haag) vind je restaurant Sababa, dat 8 jaar geleden door Karlijn, haar zusje en twee vrienden is opgericht. Karlijn was na haar studie bestuurskunde toch niet helemaal gelukkig en wilde iets creatievers doen. Ze volgde haar levenslange passie en ging een koksopleiding doen, wat haar enorm beviel. Toen ze vriend Bob sprak, vertelde hij dat hij in Helsinki hooked was geraakt aan een broodje falafel, terwijl hij eigenlijk een echte vleeseter was. Aangezien ze zoiets hier niet hadden, vroeg hij Karlijn, haar zusje en een andere vriend of zij samen een restaurant wilden openen. Zij hadden samen al eerder een jaar bestuur gedaan op hun tennisvereniging en hadden wel weer zin in een avontuur. Niet veel later openden ze (met een boel klushulp van vrienden en familie) hun eerste vestiging. Het was even een lastige start, maar na meerdere lovende recensies begonnen de klanten binnen te stromen. Nu, 8 jaar later, hebben ze een grote vaste fanbase opgebouwd en organiseren regelmatig leuke dingen. Toch begint de wedstrijd anders dan gehoopt; na een mooi doelpunt van Haïti staat Marokko al snel op achterstand. Dat mag het optimisme in de zaal echter niet drukken: "We zijn net begonnen, dus we hebben nog goede hoop", klinkt het.
