Volgens de Stichting Amsterdamse Zwerfkatten (SAZ) is het aantal zwerfkatten in de stad op dit moment buitengewoon hoog. Omdat de dierenasiels ook vol zitten, is er sprake van te weinig doorstroom en kan de opvang het nauwelijks aan. Het is er zelfs zo druk, dat er katten worden opgevangen op het kantoorgedeelte van de opvang. De opvang, waarbij de katten worden verzorgd en geresocialiseerd, is het tussenstation tussen de straat en het asiel. Normaal gesproken gaan katten door naar het asiel of een pleeggezin, maar nu zit dat dus allemaal vol. Dat komt mede doordat het kittenseizoen is begonnen, vertelt kantoormedewerker Michel van de Werken. Het kittenseizoen is de periode (ongeveer van april tot september) waarin de meeste kittens worden geboren. "Ik doe wat ik kan, maar het voelt wel als dweilen met de kraan open", vertelt Alex Meijvogel, een dierenverzorger bij SAZ. Vrijwilligers en steriliseren Michel denkt dat Amsterdammers een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen in het verlagen van het aantal kittens. "We zijn dringend op zoek naar vrijwilligers die ons kunnen helpen, maar ook pleeggezinnen die ons helpen", zegt Michel. Ook is het steriliseren van Amsterdamse katten een belangrijke factor in het verminderen van het aantal zwerfkittens. In this episode of Mastering Spain, I take an in-depth look at the climate and weather conditions that shape Spain’s vineyards and wines. Spain is an exceptionally diverse country, with Atlantic, Mediterranean, continental and subtropical influences. I explore how latitude, altitude, mountain ranges, coastlines, rainfall and temperature all affect grape growing across the country. I begin with Green Spain and the cool, wet regions of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country before moving inland to areas sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains, including Castilla y León, La Rioja and Navarra. I then examine the Mediterranean climate of eastern and southern Spain, including Valencia, Murcia, Andalucía, Cataluña and the Balearic Islands. From there, I look at the extreme continental conditions of the Meseta and explain the importance of altitude and diurnal temperature range. The video also covers the subtropical climate of the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma and Fuerteventura, as well as Spain’s vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events such as the devastating Valencia floods of 2024. The country is a federal constitutional monarchy, with a king as the head of state and a prime minister as the head of government. The decision making is divided between three levels of government: ▶️ Federal government ▶️ 3 communities based on language – Flemish, French and German ▶️ 3 regions – Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. And that's where things get interesting. Because even though Flanders and Wallonia are part of the same country and follow the same national rules, their politics look very different. So why is the far right much stronger in Flanders than in Wallonia? For decades, Wallonia has maintained not only a political firewall “cordon sanitaire" against the far right, but also a media one, the “cordon mediatique”. Mainstream parties don't cooperate with far-right parties, and public broadcasters rarely give them a direct platform. While the far right has become a major force in Flanders, it remains relatively weak in Wallonia. Some argue that's proof the firewall is effective. Others point out that many Walloons actually do share concerns about immigration and security similar to far-right voters in Belgium's north, France, or Germany – but that the far right in Wallonia has struggled to build strong parties, find charismatic leaders, and overcome a highly organized anti-fascist movement. Scholen hebben daartoe een wettelijke meldplicht. Olfers ziet vaker dat basisscholen niet weten wat ze moeten doen bij vermoedens van een seksueel misdrijf.

The Philosopher Who Said Feelings Are in the Room Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt the tension? Before anyone speaks, before anything obvious happens, the air feels heavy. The room feels angry. A classroom before an exam feels suffocating. A cathedral feels solemn. A casino feels unreal. A hospital waiting room feels anxious. We usually treat these as metaphors. But the German philosopher Hermann Schmitz argued that they are not just metaphors at all. Right-wing Trump ally Abelardo de la Espriella has clinched a narrow victory in Sunday's runoff presidential election in Colombia, defeating leftist Senator Iván Cepeda, an ally of current President Gustavo Petro. De la Espriella ran a fearmongering, "tough-on-crime" campaign, promising to build mega-prisons inspired by El Salvador's authoritarian President Nayib Bukele, to bomb "narcoterrorist camps" and to abandon Petro's peace efforts. His reported victory is also a win for President Trump, whose administration is waging an intensifying "war on drugs" across Latin America, targeting left-wing leaders like Petro with false allegations and threats of military intervention.

In Newark, New Jersey, a Father's Day vigil outside the Delaney Hall ICE jail was disrupted when a red sports car entering the facility struck a protester who was waving an upside-down U.S. flag. Demonstrators said they believe the driver of the car was an employee of the GEO Group, the for-profit private prison company that operates the ICE jail. Soon after, ICE agents deployed pepper spray and mace on the crowd. The hunger and labor strike that detained immigrants at Delaney Hall began on May 22 is ongoing, despite most of the strikers having been transferred out of Delaney and sent to other ICE jails, according to local activists.
