The Iran war has “fundamentally transformed the United States' position in the Middle East,” says journalist Spencer Ackerman. “The Iranians have cratered the air bases, destroyed the radar systems that protected those air bases, and have held at risk the energy and other critical infrastructure — data center facilities — around the Gulf states that hosted the United States’s military presence, made those U.S. allies in the Gulf think very seriously about whether the United States’s military umbrella actually defends them.”

Meldpunt RITA opent tijdens de WorldPride volgende maand meerdere locaties in de stad waar bezoekers terechtkunnen als zij zich onveilig voelen. Deze zogenoemde 'Safer Spaces' moeten mensen een plek bieden waar zij onder meer hulp kunnen krijgen als ze bijvoorbeeld gediscrimineerd worden. "We hopen alleen dat het niet nodig is", benadrukt Jerrald Justin van stichting RITA. In iets meer dan een maand is het zover: WorldPride komt dan voor het eerst in de geschiedenis naar de stad. World Pride is een groot pride-evenement en wordt iedere twee jaar in een andere stad in de wereld georganiseerd. Op het lhbtiq+-evenement komen naar verwachting zo'n 1,4 miljoen bezoekers af. Hoewel het feest juist in het teken moet staan van vrijheid en jezelf zijn, ziet stichting RITA tijdens de Pride een toename in het aantal incidenten tegen queer personen. De stichting registreert meldingen van onder meer geweld en discriminatie tegen queers personen in de stad. "Vorig jaar hadden we 760 procent meer meldingen dan normaal", legt Jerrald Justin van RITA uit. "Hoe meer zichtbaarheid er is, hoe meer dingen gebeuren." Safer spaces Tijdens de WorldPride richt de stichting op een aantal locaties in de stad daarom speciale plekken op waar bezoekers die onder meer slachtoffer zijn van anti-lhbtiq+geweld terechtkunnen. "Daar kunnen mensen naar binnen als ze iets overkomt, weten mensen wat RITA is en kunnen een melding maken of even bijkomen", legt Jerrald uit. De speciaal ingerichte plekken komen naast het centrum van RITA in de Reguliersdwarsstraat ook in de Nieuwe Kerk, het Stedelijk museum en het Stadsarchief. In een aantal hotels verspreid over de stad komen daarnaast ook enkele 'safer spaces'. De stichting publiceert binnenkort een kaart met alle locaties in de stad. "De boodschap is eigenlijk fijn dat je in Amsterdam bent en hopelijk gebeurt je niks", legt Jerrald Justin. "Maar als je iets overkomt zijn dit de locaties waar je naartoe kunt". 'Hopelijk niet nodig' Stichting RITA gaat tijdens de WorldPride bovendien actief campagne voeren om discriminatie bespreekbaar te maken en mensen aan te sporen incidenten te melden. "We hopen dat de mensen zich gehoord, gezien en gesteund voelen", zegt Jerrald. Meldpunt RITA hoopt dat de speciaal ingerichte plekken verspreid over de stad niet gebruikt zullen worden. Of dat scenario werkelijkheid wordt, is de grote vraag.
