Guy Debord’s Warning About Modern Life You wake up, check your phone, scroll through other people’s lives, package your own life as content, work to maintain an identity, and relax by consuming more images. Guy Debord had a name for this: the spectacle. Is the Self Just Software? Joscha Bach, Consciousness & the Mind as a Model What if the self is not the pilot of the mind, but a user interface the brain creates for itself? In this episode, we explore the computational theory of mind through ideas associated with cognitive scientist and AI researcher Joscha Bach. We ask whether consciousness, emotion, free will, meaning, and identity can be understood as forms of information processing — and whether the mind is best thought of as a self-modeling system rather than a mysterious inner essence. I remove the Connecting Rod assembly from the Crankshaft. This is machined from the solid and has some marks on it. I attempt to get rid of the marks and then I remove the Steam Chest. This film shows off AMF's enormous production capabilities and high tech (for the 1960s) assembly lines, which include not only the packaging of cigarettes but also the manufacture of bowling balls, golf equipment, etc. This film is aimed at U.S. government contracts, with images of missile launches and defense industry. AMF was one of the USA's largest recreational equipment companies, with diversified products as disparate as garden equipment, atomic reactors, and yachts. Veel Amsterdammers kennen de Stopera als het stadhuis en operagebouw aan het Waterlooplein. Maar op precies dezelfde plek lag eeuwenlang een levendige woonwijk: Vlooienburg. Sinds vrijdag brengen archeologische vondsten die geschiedenis opnieuw tot leven in een tentoonstelling in de Stopera. Vlooienburg ontstond aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw op een eiland in de Amstel. De buurt groeide uit tot een van de meest multiculturele plekken van de stad. Zo woonden er mensen uit verschillende delen van Europa, onder wie Joden uit Spanje, Portugal en Midden- en Oost-Europa. Daarnaast woonden er onder meer Duitsers, Scandinaviërs en Britten. Historici beschouwen Vlooienburg daarom als een van de eerste multiculturele wijken van Amsterdam en mogelijk zelfs van Nederland. Vermoedelijk is ook het portret dat Rembrandt van twee Afrikaanse mannen maakte, wat in die tijd een zeldzaamheid was in de schilderkunst, op Vlooienburg gemaakt. Rembrandt woonde hier om de hoek. De wijk is al een tijdje verdwenen, lang kon je alleen aan oude kaarten aflezen hoe het eruit moet hebben gezien. Maar nu is er dus een maquette, die gemaakt kon worden omdat ze bij het UvA Research Lab 3D-modellen van die kaarten maakten. Die maquette staat nu tentoongesteld in een vitrinekast in de Stopera, onder een maquette die de kortgeleden overleden Stopera-ontwerper Cees Dam ooit maakte. De maquettes zijn op dezelfde schaal gemaakt, zodat makkelijk in te beelden is hoe de wijk er in het echt moet hebben uitgezien. Ook de archeologische vondsten, waarvan er een aantal onder en naast de maquette staan uitgestald, geven een inkijkje in het dagelijkse leven van de bewoners. Bij opgravingen in de jaren tachtig, voorafgaand aan de bouw van de Stopera en de metroverbinding, werden complete huizenblokken en tientallen beerputten onderzocht. Volgens Ranjith Jayasena, archeoloog van de gemeente Amsterdam, vertellen de tentoongestelde vondsten veel over Vlooienburg: “Historisch gezien wisten we natuurlijk al dat hier mensen van verschillende achtergronden wonen, maar door deze archeologische vondsten weten we hoe zo'n huishouden er echt uitzag. En wat blijkt? Een katholiek huis zag er bijna hetzelfde uit als een joods huis. Het verschil zat echt in de nuances. Zoals een bord met een Hebreeuwse tekst voor speciale joodse gelegenheden.” De Tweede Wereldoorlog betekende het begin van het einde van Vlooienburg. De wijk bestond op dat moment voor een groot deel uit een Joodse gemeenschap: ongeveer vier op de vijf inwoners van Vlooienburg was Joods. De Duitse deportaties tijdens de oorlog zorgden ervoor dat de ooit levendige woonwijk na de oorlog veranderde in een spookstad. Uiteindelijk verdween de wijk volledig in 1981 om plaats te maken voor de bouw van de Stopera. Nu is het moeilijk voor te stellen dat er op de vierkante meters van de Stopera een dichtbevolkte woonwijk lag. Jayasena hoopt dat de maquette die herinnering weer tot leven brengt. "Ik hoop dat, wanneer je naar de maquette kijkt, je je kunt realiseren dat je op historische grond staat." De maquette vind je voorbij de hoofdingang van het stadhuis. Hij is directeur van de branchevereniging voor de haven en de industrie. Niet gek dus dat de Amsterdamse haven zijn favoriete plek van de stad is. Veel Amsterdammers voelen dat minder. En ook vindt Noorman dat de gemeente niet altijd prioriteit geeft aan de haven en de bedrijven die daar zitten. De gemeente wil tienduizenden huizen bouwen in de nieuwe stadswijk Haven-Stad ten koste van een deel van de haven, terwijl de provincie de haven en de industrie juist wil beschermen. "Ik begrijp dat er woningen bij moeten komen. Maar de haven is zo ontzettend belangrijk. Het is natuurlijk gek dat de provincie daar meer de noodzaak van inziet, dan de gemeente zelf.", aldus Noorman. Toch zijn op de Javakade best wat havenliefhebbers te vinden. "Het is toch prachtig wat daar allemaal gebeurt", vertelt een bezoeker. "Ik vind het machtig. Al vroeg valt de openingstreffer van Amsterdammer Brian Brobbey, waarna het terras ontploft van vreugde. Bier vliegt de lucht in, mensen springen elkaar in de armen en overal klinken juichkreten. Dit is precies het WK-feest waar veel supporters op hadden gehoopt. ''Zonnetje, biertje erbij. Kan niet beter dit'', zegt een supporter. Wanneer Brobbey na een kwartier zijn tweede al maakt, barst het feest helemaal los. Supporters zingen, dansen en filmen de hoogtepunten op hun telefoon. Een groep vrienden springt in de lucht, terwijl anderen juichend hun armen in de lucht steken. ''Ik snap niks van voetbal, maar dit snap ik wel'', aldus een supporter na het eerste doelpunt. Na de rust gaat het doelpuntenfestijn onverminderd door. Ook de Zweedse tegentreffer kan de pret niet drukken. Bij het vijfde Nederlandse doelpunt klinkt misschien wel het hardste gejuich van de avond. Op verschillende plekken op het terras worden vreugdedansjes ingezet en klinkt het gejuich uit honderden kelen tegelijk. Wanneer het eindsignaal klinkt en de 5-1-overwinning definitief is, blijft een groot deel van het publiek nog lang hangen. Waar de eerste groepswedstrijd nog eindigde in een teleurstellend gelijkspel, kreeg het publiek dit keer precies waar het op hoopte: doelpunten, spektakel en een overtuigende overwinning. ''We hebben ze laten zien wie Oranje is.'', zegt een trotse supporter na de wedstrijd. Donderdagnacht speelt Nederland om 01.00 uur tegen Tunesië de laatste wedstrijd in de groepsfase. De volgende ronde kan Oranje eigenlijk niet meer ontgaan. "We moeten een evenwicht vinden tussen besparen en meer rendement halen uit de huidige inkomsten", vindt minister Prévot. Hij gaat daarmee in tegen de visie van coalitiepartner MR, die geen belastingverhoging wil. Prévot denkt zelf bijvoorbeeld aan een vermindering van bepaalde fiscale voordelen. "De inspanningen moeten eerlijk verdeeld worden. Iedereen moet bijdragen volgens zijn mogelijkheden." Hij zegt ook voorstander te zijn van het idee om "de sterke schouders" meer te laten bijdragen. Een rijkentaks dus? "Ja, dat kan, maar misschien met andere modaliteiten dan bij het voorstel van Vooruit. Ik ben zeker niet iemand die tegen rijke mensen is. Maar het is volgens mij logisch dat sterke schouders meer betalen." Prévot denkt dat begrotingsinspanning van 13 miljard euro "niet mogelijk" is Idealiter zou de regering deze regeerperiode nog 13 miljard euro vinden om de begroting in een wat rustiger vaarwater te krijgen, zo zei Pierre Wunsch van de Nationale Bank vorige week. Minister en vicepremier Prévot (Les Engagés) blaast in 'De zevende dag' even als hij dat hoort. "13 of 14 miljard, dat zou ideaal zijn. Maar ik denk eerlijk gezegd niet dat het mogelijk is." "We hebben sinds de start van deze regering al een inspanning gedaan van 32 miljard euro. Dat is de grootste inspanning sinds WOII in ons land. We moeten hervormen, maar we moeten ook aandachtig blijven voor de sociale cohesie van ons land. Anders is dat ook slecht voor de economie. Dat evenwicht moeten we bereiken." Volgens hem is het de doelstelling om dit jaar 7 miljard euro te vinden. "Dat is inderdaad te weinig. Maar deze regering kan niet alle inspanningen doen voor alle regeringen en alle komende jaren. Als wij dit jaar al 7 miljard euro kunnen vinden, zou dat tof zijn. Natuurlijk moeten we dan in de toekomst nog extra inspanningen doen. En ook toekomstige regeringen zullen dat moeten doen." Prévot: "Moeilijk om Israël nog een bondgenoot te noemen" Is Israël nog een bondgenoot van België? Die vraag kreeg minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Maxime Prévot in 'De zevende dag'. "Israël is een partner", klonk het met enige aarzeling. "Maar het is moeilijk om het woord bondgenoot te gebruiken als je naar de houding naar de Israëlische regering kijkt." "De aanvallen van Israël op verschillende landen zijn onaanvaardbaar. De manier waarop de Gazanen worden behandeld, de uitbreiding van de nederzettingen, dat is een schande. Ze respecteren het internationale recht niet meer." Het verklaart, zo zegt Prévot, waarom hij zelf verschillende maatregelen heeft voorgesteld, met onder meer een importban voor Israëlische producten uit bezette gebieden. "Is dat genoeg? Volgens sommigen zeker niet. Maar met die maatregelen zit ons land wel in de kopgroep van Europese landen. Het zou beter zijn om een maatregel te nemen op Europees niveau, maar veel landen durven dat niet, om economische, historische of ideologische reden." Wat is het verschil tussen een partner en een bondgenoot? "We hebben nog contact met de Israëlische regering, met onze landgenoten daar. En er is ook economische uitwisseling. Maar we zitten zeker niet op dezelfde lijn op vlak van respect voor internationaal en humanitair recht. Hun houding moet helemaal veranderen." Meer van onze video's zien?
