Waar ooit een oud drinkwaterpompstation op een uitgestrekte zandvlakte stond, opende dertig jaar geleden Café-Restaurant Amsterdam als grootste restaurant in de stad: een bijzonder concept voor die tijd. Inmiddels is het restaurant – in de volksmond beter bekend als Cradam – niet meer weg te denken uit de stad. Wie goed kijkt, ziet dat er in al die jaren opvallend weinig is veranderd aan het interieur. "Juist dat vertrouwde huiskamergevoel maakt de plek geliefd bij meerdere generaties Amsterdammers." Met een grote glimlach vertellen Milène Hoving en Charles Hollenkamp over de opening, dit jaar dertig jaar geleden. ''Je voelde meteen de goede sfeer. Het was groot, maar tegelijkertijd ook gezellig.'' Sinds de opening runnen ze het restaurant vlak bij het Westerpark, dat inmiddels vier eigenaren heeft. Voor Hollenkamp is het nog altijd 'elke dag weer een feest'. Toch waren er destijds genoeg mensen die twijfelden aan het plan om een restaurant met 300 zitplaatsen te openen. ''Je moet ook een beetje gek zijn om dat te doen'', vertelt Hollenkamp. Het geheim Wie goed naar het interieur kijkt, ziet dat er in dertig jaar opvallend weinig is veranderd. ''Alleen de asbakken zijn van tafel'', vertelt Hoving. Ook de menukaart is volgens Hollenkamp grotendeels hetzelfde gebleven. Helemaal stilstaan doet het restaurant niet. ''Door de tijd heen verander je wel dingen, anders word je oubollig'', aldus Hoving. Maar de basis is altijd hetzelfde gebleven. “Waarom zou je iets veranderen als het mooi is?” Volgens de eigenaren zit het succes vooral in de sfeer. Enthousiaste bediening speelt daarin een belangrijke rol, zegt Hollenkamp. Daarnaast is Cradam voor veel gasten een vertrouwde plek geworden. ''Veel klanten vertellen ons dat ze hier vroeger al kwamen met hun ouders en dat er niets is veranderd'', vertelt Hoving. Geen koekje bij de koffie Ondanks de omvang voelt de plek voor veel bezoekers niet als een massaal restaurant, maar juist als een tweede thuis. ''Ik kom hier al dertig jaar, voor mij is het mijn achtertuin'', vertelt een bezoeker. Een andere gast waardeert juist de levendigheid van het restaurant: ''Er is hier precies genoeg ruis, waardoor je tijdens je werk niet indut.'' Is er dan helemaal geen kritiekpunt volgens de bezoekers? ''Jawel, ik mis een koekje bij de koffie; dat zou ik wel heel lekker vinden.'' Willamalane covers 1,500 acres with five recreational facilities, forty-six parks, ten waterfront areas, twenty-nine miles of hiking and biking trails, nine sports fields and twenty-seven playgrounds. In 1944, voters organized to pass a park and recreation district measure. It is it’s own special tax district. Willamalane provides programs for patrons of various age ranging from after school care for kids, swimming lessons to dog obedience, pottery, computing, water fitness and adaptive recreation for adults with disabilities. The 1950s was the earliest era of the district, and saw the addition of an outdoor pool facility and the formation of the Willamalane Golden Age Club geared at senior programs. Footage opens with the 1951 opening of the outdoor pool and continues to explore other portions of the district’s programs highlighting the park’s vital role in the community. Instructors guide youth through swimming, baseball, basketball and art lessons. Later portions feature a church group, a local school play and cyclists pushing for Armitage County Park. Credits (00:00) open the film. It was photographed by Claude T. Gerlach (:21). Claude was associated with Gerlach’s Out West Photo Shop of Boulder, Colorado. Much of his works documenting the American West are found in archival collections. Employees of Willamalane gather (:21-1:04) as youth rim the fence around the facility prior to the pool’s opening. Footage of the interior shows employees meeting with patrons (17:56), members in the halls (18:21) and an art show (19:05). Youth learn welding (42:47) and baton techniques (43:06). A 1956 Oldsmobile 88 sits outside Deadwood Cafe (44:10). An instructor notes the action on a rifle (44:40). Costumed performers take to a local school stage (45:28-47:29). A baseball diamond (49:12) and grounded biplanes follow (51:57). A stream of cyclists (52:53) pedal for Armitage Park along the Mackenzie River (53:41). It concludes with kids on a trampoline (54:21) and playing ball on the blacktop (54:35). A teen star loses his voice—and invents a new way to sing. This is how a crisis remade Peking opera. From grueling childhood training with flower pots and wall stretches to an early “ghost voice” at 13, Cheng Yanqiu’s path was anything but easy. Guided by mentor Luo Ying Gong and helped by masters, he rebuilt his technique around breath, returned with the Hua Shang Troupe in 1922 to roaring encores, and then left China in 1932 with Paul Long van to study Western drama and opera. What he brought back would change everything: reform in opera education, daring stagings, and the breakthrough comedy The Lucky Purse—featuring a coloratura-inspired aria, a custom huqin timbre, and Tai Chi-infused water sleeves. Decades later, his legacy echoes from Beijing to New York as students carry the Cheng style forward. Negentig minuten lang draait het niet om dansen, maar om luisteren en tot jezelf komen. ZERØBPM is een ambient- en meditatie-evenement dat bezoekers uitnodigt om even naar binnen te keren. Medeoprichter Stefan Beek omschrijft het als een plek waar alle afleiding wegvalt. “ADE gaat over uitgaan en bij ons gaat het over ingaan.” Sommige bezoekers komen vooral voor de muziek, anderen zoeken juist het meditatieve aspect. Door negentig minuten stil te zijn en aandachtig te luisteren, krijgen ze de ruimte om even met zichzelf bezig te zijn. Niet iedereen is gewend aan meditatie, maar dat maakt de ervaring niet minder leuk. Een bezoeker vertelt normaal niet zo met meditatie bezig te zijn, maar vond ZERØBPM juist verrassend leuk.''Vooral ook omdat het een beetje op elektronische muziek is'', aldus de bezoeker. 'Kindermarteling', zo noemen experts de behandeling van Nederlandse jongeren in Huize Soria in Spanje. In twintig jaar tijd kwamen er zo'n 265 jeugdzorg-kinderen in het gezinshuis terecht. Nieuwsuur sprak tientallen van hen. Hoe kan het dat niemand ingreep? Vorige maand werd de instelling na een publicatie van Nieuwsuur gesloten. Inmiddels hebben meerdere jongeren en ouders aangegeven aangifte tegen de eigenaren van het gezinshuis te doen. De eigenaren willen op hun beurt weer aangifte doen tegen Nieuwsuur én de jongeren, die volgens hen valse verklaringen hebben afgegeven. Minister Mirjam Sterk van Jeugd (CDA) zegt geen onderzoek naar de gebeurtenissen te doen. Een meerderheid van de Tweede Kamer wil wel een onderzoek. Sterk heeft gemeenten wel 'dringend' opgeroepen om voorlopig geen jongeren in het buitenland te plaatsen.
