Basisscholen in de stad besteden steeds vaker uitgebreid aandacht aan Keti Koti. Op de Flevoparkschool in Oost staat de herdenking en viering van de afschaffing van de slavernij de hele maand centraal in het onderwijs. Leerlingen volgen lessen over Keti Koti, maken traditionele kleding en organiseren op 1 juli een feestelijke optocht door de wijk. Voor de Flevoparkschool in Oost is het één van de belangrijkste dagen van het jaar: Keti Koti. De school viert en herdenkt dan de afschaffing van de slavernij. Op 1 juli is het 153 jaar geleden dat de slavernij in de toenmalige Nederlandse koloniën werd afgeschaft. "We zijn een school vol met Amsterdamse kinderen, van alle kleuren, soorten en maten", legt Janneke Poort uit. Ze is werkzaam op de Flevoparkschool als intern begeleider en coördineert alle activiteiten in het kader van Keti Koti op de school. "We vinden het heel belangrijk dat de hele geschiedenis aan bod komt." Lessen en activiteiten Sinds de start van de Keti Koti-maand op 1 juni wordt op de school dan ook van alles georganiseerd rondom Keti Koti. Leerlingen krijgen lessen over de afschaffing van de slavernij, volgen workshops om traditionele kleding te maken die tijdens de slavernij werd gedragen en zingen liedjes. Met het onderwijs en de activiteiten hoopt de school het belang van de afschaffing van de slavernij zo goed als mogelijk over te dragen op alle leerlingen. Keti Koti in het basisonderwijs De aandacht voor Keti Koti op de Flevoparkschool in Oost staat niet op zichzelf. Meer basisscholen in de stad besteden aandacht aan de herdenking en viering van de afschaffing van de slavernij. Hoe de scholen er aandacht aan besteden verschilt, blijkt uit een rondgang van AT5 onder 20 basisscholen in alle delen van de stad. Sommige scholen bespreken Keti Koti alleen met leerlingen als gespreksopener van de dag. Andere scholen daarentegen verzorgen daarnaast in aanloop naar Keti Koti gastlessen of lessen door eigen docenten. Ook bezoeken ze musea waar ze leren over het slavernijverleden. Dit geldt zowel voor klassen in de onderbouw als de bovenbouw. Tijdens Keti Koti op 1 juli organiseren enkele scholen een feestelijke optocht door de buurt om bewoners in de wijk te wijzen op het belang van Keti Koti. Een enkele school sluit zelfs de deuren op die dag zodat leerlingen en ouders bij de Nationale Herdenking Slavernijverleden in het Oosterpark aanwezig kunnen zijn. Die basisscholen vieren Keti Koti op school een dag eerder op later. Niet alleen in de bovenbouw wordt er aandacht aan besteedt, ook de leerlingen van groep 1/2 zijn met het thema bezig. De kinderen van lerares Orpha maken zelf angisa's (traditionele hoofddoeken, red.) en zingen liedjes. Ondanks hun leeftijd hebben de leerlingen zeker al een idee waarvoor het allemaal is. "We maken het voor het Keti Koti-feest", legt een meisje uit dat knutselt aan een toekan als versiersel voor in de klas. "Dat is het vrijheidsfeest" Bigi Spikri De lessen en activiteiten rond Keti Koti op de Flevoparkschool dienen bovendien als voorbereiding op de Bigi Spikri optocht die op 1 juli door de buurt trekt. "We gaan een optocht lopen door de buurt met alle kinderen", legt Poort uit. "Die vanaf de voorschool tot en met groep acht." Met de feestelijke parade die in het teken staat van vrijheid en het eren van de voorouders hoopt de school iedereen te kunnen laten zien dat dit bij de stad hoort. Het is dit jaar voor het eerst dat de school dit organiseert. The iconic robot vacuum—the autonomous bot that can roam your home sucking up pet hair and Cheerios–is evolving. Manufacturers are shifting almost entirely to combo robot vac-mops. The question, for our vacuum tester, is whether they’re any good and if they’re worth the very steep prices (upwards of $1,600 for top-of-the-line models). Wirecutter writer Evan Dent joins us to explain how the new vac-mops handle everyday messes, the homes they’re best suited for, and what you should know about storing and repairing them. If you’re looking for a deal on a robot vac or vac-mop combo, he also shares the prices to watch for during Amazon’s upcoming Prime Day sale (or any deals event).  This episode covers: • Why robot vacuums are disappearing: Basic robot vacuums have reached a profit ceiling, so manufacturers are phasing them out. Instead, they can charge a premium for the added features of vac-mops. • These new bots are only decent cleaners: The mop function isn't great for tough stains, and the mop pad actually makes them sit higher off the ground, which slightly reduces their vacuuming power. In April 1989, a newspaper clipping about an art exhibit landed in the mailbox of the Rev. Donald Wildmon, the founder of a conservative evangelical group, the American Family Association. Partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit included a now-infamous photograph by Andres Serrano that showed a crucifix submerged in Serrano’s own urine. Incensed, Wildmon sent a copy of the photo to every member of Congress, setting off a battle led by the Christian right over what contemporary art could be and who should receive federal funding for it. Isaac Butler, an author and cultural historian, walks through this and other pivotal moments in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s in his new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America’s Culture Wars.” Butler spoke to the Book Review’s editor, Gilbert Cruz, about how these fights unfolded and what they meant for the artists themselves. The Spanish Inquisition...for five centuries it's been the easy shorthand for religious cruelty: secret dungeons, hooded torturers, endless burnings. Most of that picture comes from the Black Legend, propaganda written by Spain's rivals who had every reason to exaggerate.
