Just weeks after threatening Iran with devastating consequences, President Trump is preparing to sign a new agreement with Tehran - a dramatic shift that is raising questions across Washington, Jerusalem and the wider Middle East. The proposed deal would see US and Iranian officials continue negotiations over Tehran's nuclear programme, despite concerns from critics that many of the key issues which sparked the conflict remain unresolved. Meanwhile, tensions are growing between the White House and Israel, with reports that Israeli officials were not involved in the negotiations despite the agreement's potential implications for the conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Een foto die ruim veertig jaar geleden door fotograaf Ed van der Elsken van haar werd gemaakt, is uitgekozen als icoon van een nieuwe tentoonstelling over zijn werk. "Overal sta ik op, het is ongelofelijk", zegt Helena. De Jong fietste destijds nietsvermoedend door de stad toen Van der Elsken haar fotografeerde. Zelf was ze zich nauwelijks bewust van het moment. "Ik zag ineens een man met een hele grote lens. Ik stak mijn tong uit, want ik houd helemaal niet van foto's." Op de vraag wat ze dacht toen ze de fotograaf zag, antwoordt ze: "Ik dacht: weer zo'n man met een camera." Dat juist deze foto nu het gezicht van de tentoonstelling is geworden, kwam voor haar als een verrassing. "Het is een beetje schokkend", vertelt ze. "Ik had verwacht ergens achterin te hangen, gewoon tussen alle andere foto's. Maar niet zo spectaculair." Ontdekt door zoon Helena wist aanvankelijk niet eens dat de tentoonstelling eraan kwam. Haar zoon ontdekte de foto toevallig toen hij langs het Rijksmuseum fietste. Hij maakte een foto van de afbeelding en stuurde die naar haar. "Mijn zoon had mij gezien op die foto en stuurde die door. It portrays the historical struggle known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. In the mid-1930s, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia appealed to the League of Nations for help after Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, driven by imperial ambition, invaded Ethiopia to restore a new Roman Empire. Despite Ethiopia’s limited military and economic development, Selassie hoped for international support, placing faith in diplomacy over war. However, France and other European powers, wary of antagonizing Italy amid the rise of Nazi Germany, failed to act decisively. Mussolini manipulated a border incident to justify invasion in October 1935, unleashing modern warfare, including poison gas, against poorly armed Ethiopian forces. The League imposed weak sanctions too late to stop the invasion. By May 1936, Italian forces occupied Addis Ababa, and Selassie fled into exile. His subsequent plea at the League was mocked, and Italy’s conquest was effectively accepted, signaling the League’s impotence. The invasion strengthened Mussolini’s alliance with Hitler and emboldened future fascist aggression. By 3:27, Mussolini, who rose to power in 1922 after forming the Fascist Party, seeks to avenge Italy’s defeat by Ethiopian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. At 7:02, Mussolini orders his colonial governor to provoke an incident near the border at Walwal, giving him the excuse to begin his invasion. Selassie places his hope in diplomacy, appealing to the League of Nations. At 8:46, French Premier Pierre Laval, more concerned with securing Mussolini as an ally against Hitler, gives Italy implicit approval to act in East Africa. The League takes no action (10:03), forcing Selassie to issue a general mobilization on September 29, 1935 (10:57). By 11:56, Italy invades Ethiopia, using modern weapons and Moroccan mercenaries. The contrast in firepower is stark: machine guns against spears (12:16). Italy captures Adwa. (13:05) The League of Nations imposes weak economic sanctions. Mussolini uses them to rally national unity. Italian women donate wedding rings for the war effort (14:42).New horrors including aerial bombing and poison gas (15:45). By April 1936 (16:35), Italians reach the outskirts of Addis Ababa and Selassie is forced into exile (17:49). On May 5 (18:42), Italian troops march triumphantly through Addis Ababa. At 19:15, Mussolini celebrates like a Roman Caesar, proclaiming Italy’s empire reborn (20:01). Selassie travels to Geneva to address the League of Nations one last time. The League lifts sanctions against Italy within a month (21:24). This victory isolates Mussolini diplomatically but wins him an ally in Adolf Hitler (22:08). Selassie takes refuge in England (22:39). His warning—that appeasing aggressors invites greater global conflict—goes unheard (23:20). Post-victory, Mussolini militarizes Italy further (23:22), but his people remain ill-suited for sustained warfare. The conquest of Ethiopia becomes his only major military success (24:21). In 1941, British forces liberate Ethiopia, and Selassie returns to his throne (24:42), beginning the longest reign of any 20th-century monarch. According to terms of the memorandum of understanding obtained by CNN and other media outlets, there is to be "an immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon." The leaked text also promises sanctions relief for Iran and access to the country's frozen assets held abroad, as well as a $300 billion fund for reconstruction and development. The memo reiterates Iran's long-held position that it will never produce nuclear weapons, with the fate of its nuclear program delayed until further negotiations. Israel has vowed to ignore the U.S.-Iran agreement and maintain its occupation of southern Lebanon, with many Israeli leaders and commentators expressing outrage about the apparent terms of the deal for being too conciliatory to Iran. The defendants are accused of "conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers" and of allegedly "violently" impeding immigration enforcement in Minneapolis during Trump's so-called Operation Metro Surge, during which thousands of federal immigration agents were deployed and fatally shot two U.S. citizens. The indictment focuses on Direct Action Minnesota, or DAMN, a broad activist coalition that prosecutors have linked to anti-fascist, or "antifa," groups. Update | Tesla heeft de Nederlandse toezichthouder RDW misleidende veiligheidsstatistieken voorgelegd bij het aanvragen van toelating voor het rijhulpsysteem 'Full Self Driving (FSD)', meldt persbureau Reuters. Volgens Reuters gebruikte Tesla vergelijkingen die een vertekend beeld geven van de veiligheid van het systeem. Zo werden FSD-Tesla's vergeleken met het totale Amerikaanse wagenpark, dat gemiddeld veel ouder is. Verkeersveiligheidsexperts noemen de cijfers daarom misleidend. De onthulling komt enkele maanden nadat Nederland als eerste EU-land toestemming gaf voor het gebruik van FSD (Supervised). In onze uitzending ‘De black box van Tesla’ sprak Phil Koopman, expert zelfrijzende auto’s, al over de dubieuze manier waarop de automaker zijn technologie presenteert. Zo bleek een bekende promotievideo uit 2016, waarin een Tesla ogenschijnlijk volledig zelfstandig rijdt, in werkelijkheid gebaseerd op een voorgeprogrammeerde route. Tijdens het opnameproces waren bovendien meerdere pogingen nodig en raakte de auto zelfs een hek. Ook lieten we zien hoe Tesla veiligheidsclaims en twijfelachtige statistieken inzet om vertrouwen te wekken in zijn systemen. Destijds vroegen we Maarten Balk van de RDW om een reactie. De gemeente gaat het kruispunt Kamperfoelieweg met de Banne Buikslootlaan en de Schepenlaan aanpassen na het zoveelste auto-ongeluk. Buurtbewoner Adrian Vrijhoef zag het meerdere keren misgaan en hoopt op een rotonde. De scherven van het laatste ongeluk liggen nog op het kruispunt. Afgelopen woensdag botsten daar twee auto's op elkaar. Vrijhoef reed er vlak achter. In de ene auto trof hij een moeder met dochter, in de andere een oma met twee kleinkinderen. Volgens hem is het niet de eerste keer dat het misgaat op de kruising. "Ik zal niet zeggen dat het wekelijks gebeurt, maar ik denk dat hier afgelopen jaar zeker vier keer een ongeluk is geweest", zegt hij. "En niet een klein ongeluk, maar echt een serieuze aanrijding." De huidige situatie is volgens Vrijhoef te onduidelijk, omdat het verkeer dat van links komt voorrang heeft als dat de bocht doorrijdt. "Daarnaast rijden mensen hier te hard, en kan je het niet goed zien. Het is een apart kruispunt." De gemeente erkent dat de kruising een probleemlocatie is. "De kruising is bij ons bekend. Het is een blackspot." Van een blackspot is sprake wanneer er meer dan drie ongelukken per jaar gebeuren. Volgens cijfers van de politie ging het sinds januari 2025 nu vier keer serieus mis op deze locatie. Rotonde Om de verkeersveiligheid te verbeteren, wil de gemeente het kruispunt op korte termijn aanpassen. Een rotonde zou volgens de gemeente een goede oplossing kunnen zijn. Wanneer ze daarmee aan de slag gaan, is nog onduidelijk. Vrijhoef is positief over de aangekondigde maatregelen. "Goed dat de gemeente eindelijk stappen onderneemt", zegt Vrijhoef.
