The U.S. and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding on Sunday extending the ceasefire by 60 days. It is set to be formally signed in Geneva on Friday. According to Iran, the deal calls for a permanent and immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. But Israel, which is not a party to the agreement, says it plans to keep troops in parts of southern Lebanon. "The Israelis are trying to destroy this deal, and they will continue to try," says Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. "It will require persistent, consistent pressure by Trump on the Israelis in order to hold them back."

De luchtkwaliteit in de stad verbetert de afgelopen jaren, maar uit onderzoek blijkt dat het nog steeds schadelijk is voor de gezondheid. De GGD en stichting De Gezonde Stad hebben allebei een rapport uitgebracht over vorig jaar en zien dat er nog werk aan de winkel is. "52% van de Amsterdammers maakt zich zorgen om de luchtkwaliteit." Het is duidelijk nog altijd een verkeersader, en juist daarom staat op de Stadhouderskade een meetstation van de GGD. Daar wordt in de gaten gehouden hoe het staat met de luchtkwaliteit in de stad. Volgens Imke van Moorselaar, teamleider Luchtkwaliteit, is de ongezonde lucht voor mensen een gevaar dat niet opvalt. "Je merkt het niet, je ruikt het niet en je ziet het niet. Dus in die zin zou je het een sluipmoordenaar kunnen noemen. We worden er allemaal iets ongezonder van zonder dat we het zien of merken." De hoeveelheid vervuilende stoffen als stikstofdioxide en fijnstof in de lucht is sinds 2010 gehalveerd, blijkt uit GGD onderzoek.  De GGD heeft om in het inzichtelijk te maken een voorbeeld. Je rookt namelijk gemiddeld per dag een aantal sigaretten mee door de slechte staat van de lucht die we inademen Op dit moment zitten we op zo'n 4 meegerookte sigaretten per dag.  Ja, 2017 waren het er nog 6 en als je verder teruggaat richting de 10, dus ook daar zit een positieve ontwikkeling in.  Het gaat dus elk jaar ietsje beter. Meer elektrisch rijden, uitstootvrije zones en na de coronapandemie zitten we uberhaupt minder in de auto. Maar toch kunnen Amsterdammers zelf ook nog wat doen voor schonere lucht. Vaker de fiets pakken, maar ook meer groen helpt bijvoorbeeld al Als we met zijn allen al onze balkons aanpakken dan hebben we misschien wel zoveel groen als het Vondelpark erbij. Dus ik zou ook oproepen: doe er wat aan.  In de stad zitten we momenteel op de drukke straten nog ver van het ideaal. De waardes van schadelijke stoffen zijn daar nog twee keer zo hoog als hoe het zou moeten zijn om het als gezond te beoordelen.  - Is het misschien wel een illusie om ooit die schone status te bereiken?  Q Ik denk niet dat het een illusie is. Het is niet makkelijk dat weet ik ook, maar we weten wat de bronnen zijn en dat er schonere alternatieven zijn. We zien dat het op andere plekken in Nederland ook kan. The company is based in South Texas in a city controlled by Musk known as Starbase, which SpaceX has used for rocket launches since 2014. Environmental and conservation groups recently filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block a land swap approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that would give SpaceX more than 700 acres of a national wildlife refuge in South Texas. With Starbase, "SpaceX has already burned down dozens of acres of wildlife habitat, is dumping polluted water on our beach, has sent rocket debris into our communities, into communities in Mexico," says Bekah Hinojosa, co-founder of the South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which is part of the lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Elon Musk is using our impoverished community as his laboratory to blow up dangerous experimental SpaceX rockets." While groups like the South Texas Environmental Justice Network are organizing opposition to Musk's operations in South Texas, local officials are ignoring constituents' complaints that SpaceX is degrading the environment and their quality of life, says Hinojosa. "We've seen elected officials take money from SpaceX here and lobby in favor of more bills that benefit SpaceX." It is set to be formally signed in Geneva on Friday. The text of the agreement has not yet been released, but Iran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. will lift its naval blockade. According to Iran, the deal calls for a permanent and immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. But Israel, which is not a party to the agreement, says it plans to keep troops in parts of southern Lebanon. "The Israelis are trying to destroy this deal, and they will continue to try," says Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. "It will require persistent, consistent pressure by Trump on the Israelis in order to hold them back." We also discuss how The Free Press, founded by Bari Weiss, published an article last week claiming the State Department had opened a probe into Parsi that could lead to his deportation. The State Department issued a statement just hours later claiming that it had "no plans to revoke the green card of Mr. Parsi at this time." "I do believe that there were elements inside the State Department that wanted to move in this direction," says Parsi. "They thought that this hit piece would help move things forward, but I think, frankly, it backfired." Kunstenaar en programmamaker Wim T. Schippers is op 83-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft zijn stichting bekendgemaakt. Schippers is onder andere bekend als de stemacteur van Ernie in Sesamstraat. Schippers begon zijn carrière eind jaren vijftig in de beeldende kunst en maakte later televisie- en radioprogramma’s zoals De Barend Servet Show en de Sjef van Oekel Show. Voor velen is hij ook bekend als de stem van Ernie in Sesamstraat. Naast Ernie deed Schippers ook meer stemmen in het programma, zoals Kermit de Kikker, De Blauwe Meneer, Biff en Graaf Tel. Naast zijn werk als kunstenaar en programmamaker had Schippers ook een grote liefde voor het in 1929 afgebrande tentoonstellingsgebouw het Paleis voor Volksvlijt. Jarenlang streed hij voor de herbouw van het gebouw dat ooit op het Frederiksplein stond.
