Veel Amsterdammers vinden een openbaar dak een goed idee, zeker nu de ruimte op de grond steeds beperkter wordt. Maar geldt dat ook als het over je eigen dak gaat? Het iconische Sluishuis op IJburg laat zien hoe dat in de praktijk werkt. Daar delen de bewoners hun gezamenlijke dak op gezette tijden met de rest van de wereld. Sinds de oplevering is het dak toegankelijk voor het publiek. Na klachten over overlast werd gekozen voor vaste openingstijden: op werkdagen tussen 12.00 en 16.00 uur kunnen bezoekers van over de hele wereld het dak op. En de huismeester? Die houdt een oogje in het zeil. "Dat werkt fantastisch", legt bewoner Eljo de Galen uit. Voorbeeld voor andere VvE's Hoewel het af en toe best druk kan worden op het dak, overheerst vooral het trotse gevoel bij de bewoners van het Sluishuis. "Het is leuk om je eigen gebouw te kunnen laten zien en het uitzicht te delen op onze prachtige stad Amsterdam", zegt bewoner Selma van Velsen. Volgens Van Velsen kunnen andere VvE's hier een voorbeeld aan nemen: "Ik zou het andere VvE's aanraden, maar dan wel gereguleerd. Met regels en wat toezicht gaat het prima." The Warner Bros. merger, if completed, would bring an even larger slice of the industry’s market share into Ellison control. It’s been contested for months as a likely violation of antitrust laws amid a wider trend of corporate consolidation in the media and entertainment industry. “This has been one of the most shallow and corrupt merger review processes we’ve ever seen,” says Craig Aaron, co-CEO of the advocacy organizations Free Press and Free Press Action (not to be confused with Paramount Skydance’s conservative news outlet The Free Press), about the Justice Department’s greenlighting of the merger. The deal will place two of the largest U.S. broadcast news networks — CBS News and CNN — under the control of a single company that “has shown it is willing to warp and manipulate news coverage to please the president,” Aaron says. It is the third consecutive summer of organized mob violence against immigrants in Northern Ireland, with roots in the extant paramilitary structures that remain there after decades of sectarian warfare. Our broadcast from the Northern Ireland capital features guests Sinéad Marmion, an immigration lawyer, and Patrick Corrigan, the Northern Ireland director of Amnesty International UK. Both were among the tens of thousands who attended a recent rally in Belfast condemning racism and standing in solidarity with immigrants. “The vast majority of people in Belfast, as across Northern Ireland, are antiracist and very welcoming to the people who have come here to make their lives from around the world,” says Corrigan. “We wanted to send, most importantly, a message to them, to say, 'You are welcome. This is your city. This is your home, just as much as it is ours.'” As mob violence drives residents from their homes and leaves many fearing for their lives, “it’s the community that has picked up the pieces. It’s women in the community, it’s migrant women in the community, that have organized and mobilized the response. Israel, however, is not a party to the tentative deal and says it plans to keep occupying areas of southern Lebanon — a position still contested by Iran and the key sticking point to the partial ceasefire deal agreed to by the U.S. and Iran in April. Although the new agreement is set to be signed Friday, Israel’s unrelenting assault on Lebanon could once again spoil any deal. “This is going to become the center of whether any actual agreement takes place,” says Drop Site News's Jeremy Scahill, who joins Democracy Now! to break down what we know about this latest round of diplomacy. Jonge basketballers uit het hele land konden vandaag hun geluk niet op. NBA-speler Quinten Post, die in Amerika op het hoogste niveau voor de Golden State Warriors speelt, gaf in Sportcentrum VU basketbaltraining. "Het leek mij gewoon heel gaaf om iets terug te doen voor basketballend Nederland." Zo'n tachtig jongeren tussen de 6 en 18 jaar hadden vandaag het geluk om les te krijgen van de 2,13 meter lange Amsterdammer Post. De belangstelling voor het gratis basketbalkamp was groot: volgens organisator All Day Athletes, dat het evenement samen met Post organiseerde, kwamen er zo'n 800 aanmeldingen uit binnen- en buitenland binnen. Gisteren kregen 80 jonge basketballers ook al les van de topsporter. Post speelt nu twee jaar voor de Warriors in hun thuisstad San Francisco. "Ik heb daardoor nu best een platform gecreëerd voor veel basketballers in Nederland", legt hij uit in de sportzaal in Amstelveen. Het leek de center van de Amerikaanse topclub een goed idee om iets terug te doen voor de basketbal-community. "Het had mij op 13-jarige leeftijd ook gaaf geleken om een dagje mee te kijken met een NBA-speler." Deelnemers van de les van Quinten zijn maar wat blij dat hun sporticoon in de stad te zien is. "Ik ben blij ook dat ik een van de tachtig gelukkigen ben", zegt een jongen uit de Bijlmer die al een paar jaar basketbal speelt. "Het is gewoon een leuke ervaring dit, om te vragen hoe hij zijn carrière is begonnen en hoe hij gekomen is waar hij nu is." Een meisje dat helemaal uit Rotterdam gekomen is voor de training vult hem aan: "Het is een kans die je niet zomaar kan krijgen, dus die wilde ik graag benutten." Tussen de training door maken de jonge basketballers graag gebruik van de mogelijkheid om met de in West opgegroeide topsporter op de foto te gaan. "Supervet dat hij gewoon bij mij in de buurt is." Hoewel Post al twee jaar voor de Warriors speelt in de Verenigde Staten is het vooralsnog onduidelijk of hij daar komend seizoen ook van de partij is. "Dat is wel de hoop, ja", zegt de geboren Amsterdammer met een grijns op zijn gezicht. "Er is op dit moment nog niks officieels", legt hij uit. "Het NBA-seizoen is nu klaar, dus hopelijk gaat het balletje snel rollen en komen we er dan achter." Ukrainian historian and scholar of antisemitism and the Holocaust, Marta Havryshko, discusses the tragedies of memory politics in Ukraine. There has been an outcry in some quarters over the Ukrainian Government’s repatriation and reburial of the Ukrainian nationalist, Nazi collaborator and leader of vicious ethnic violence against Jews, Poles, Russians and others, Andriy Melnyk. The issue was raised in the most recent phone call between the USA and Russian Presidents. We discussed this scandal of memory politics and their relationship to the NATO-Ukraine-Russia war in the first 45 minutes of the interview.
