I ended up actually enjoying the driving itself, I hated the user interface, the buttonless screens and probably most of all I hated the fact that the car was constantly beeping. When I went over the speed limit, when I changed lanes without signaling, when I got too close to the edge of the road and so on. After fiddling with the screen and the menus I managed to turn off almost all the beeping sources except one. There was one beep that stayed until the end and I couldn’t do anything about it. The car would beep randomly from time to time without any associated message or warning on the screen. I returned the car without figuring out what it is. Two years later I have purchased this, a 2024 Toyota Prius and this car has finally resolved the mystery of what that annoying beeping was. But it has also taught me that I was extremely naive. You see back when I drove the Tesla I hated all the beeping and backseat driving the care was doing but I was foolish enough to believe that’s a Tesla-only thing because Tesla’s are obnoxious tech-obsessed cars for tech-obsessed people who actually hate driving. I thought Toyota is an old-school car brand and there’s no way it would beep and annoy me like that. Well, I was wrong, beeping and backstead driving is not a Tesla thing, it’s now an industry thing and this Toyota actually is the most annoying backseat driver I have seen in my life, and that includes humans. But the really scary thing is that I am now sure that all the intrusive driver “aids” we have in cars nowadays are the beginning of the end of humanity. I now this sounds extreme but please listen to my argument and then, if you can, prove me wrong. Let’s go for a drive so that I can present my argument. Observe, I am now about to come into a roundabout and as you will see the car will beep loudly at me and tell me how it has detected a traffic crossing. I want you to think for a moment, think about how idiotic and anti-safety this actually is. I am supposed to merge into a roundabout or go through an intersection. That is the situation when I want to keep my eyes on the road the entire time in order to accurately judge the situation and multiple other moving vehicles present. I need all my focus outside on the road. What possible use could I have from an image of a traffic crossing being displayed on the screen and a loud chime drawing my attention from the road to the screen. If you need a screen to tell you that you’re coming into a traffic crossing than I believe you should not be driving a car because you are a danger to yourself and others. Here’s something else this car hates. Sunglasses. Whenever I put my sunglasses on it will tell me that driver monitor is unavailable because my face is obstructed. Ok, I’m fine being told that once so that I’m aware of it, but it will proceed to tell me this during the rest of the drive. Every couple of minutes. Sometimes it will forget and then display this message 3-4 times rapidly in a row. It will keep distracting me with this incredibly useless information unil I take my sunglasses off OR turn-off driver monitor. Unfortunately, I cannot turn off driver monitor while driving, I have to suffer until I am fully stopped and then I have to go here, long press ok, and then navigate here, enter and then turn off driver monitor. The sad fact is that I cannot turn off driver monitor permanently…..ever. Not even the dealership can do it. Driver monitor turns itself back on every time you turn the car off and on. Driver monitor is actually just a bunch of sensors here in the steering wheel tracking your face and your eyes. And you can easily obstruct it by driving with your hand like this….however if you do that it will tell you to SIT UP. Just read this. Sit up. Imperative. No, please no nothing. Sit up human and let me collect your eye movement data so that I can train the next generation of self-driving cars. Oh, what do you mean what data, the data collection you agreed to when you started the car. This is why you can’t turn driver monitor off permanently. It’s collecting your data in order to train the next generation of intrusive driver aids and/or self-driving aka autonomous driving vehicles. Thi Nguyen hebben die kwaliteit.   We kennen allemaal wel het gevoel van opgaan in een spel: of het nu het tackelen van een tegenstander is, iemand overtroeven in een kaartspel, of het volgende level halen in een game: het maakt niet uit waar je je op focust, maar als een spel zegt: dit moet je doen en dan krijg je tien punten, dan zijn velen van ons geneigd om even al het andere uit het oog te verliezen. Of zoals Napoleon het ooit zei: ‘Een soldaat vecht lang en hard voor een klein stukje gekleurd lint.’ Maar de vraag die Nguyen stelt is: wie bepaalt eigenlijk waar je punten mee haalt? Wie, zoals Nguyen, met de blik van een game-ontwerper naar de wereld kijkt, ontwaart opeens overal de verborgen scoringssystemen die ons leven sturen, en waar we zo langzamerhand in gaar koken als die spreekwoordelijke kikkers in die pan met water. Het gevaar zit hem niet in de apps, zegt Nguyen, maar in hoe verleidelijk helder onze meetwaarden zijn. Hij noemt het value capture: als voor een individu of instituut hoog op het scorebord belanden het hoogste doel wordt.  Het is die helderheid die zorgt dat de mensen die het hardst voor het getal gaan, systematisch worden beloond. In bedrijven, in politiek, in de academische wereld. Voor Nguyen is dit de overtreffende trap, die hij value collapse noemt: de mensen die volledig worden meegesleurd stijgen naar de top, terwijl de mensen die nog nadenken over wat eigenlijk echt van waarde is, achteropraken. Als je met Nguyens blik van een game-ontwerper rondkijkt op je werk, je studie, op de sportschool of gewoon op internet, zie je het overal in terug: in hoe scholen worden beoordeeld op slagingspercentages en startsalarissen, in hoe media worden afgerekend op bereik en niet op impact, in hoe politici bezuinigen op publieke omroep en cultuur omdat de waarde ervan niet in een getal te vatten is. Het is de logica van het systeem dat beloont wie het spelletje het fanatiekst meespeelt. Maar Nguyen geeft ook hoop, zij het een nuchtere: kijk kritisch naar de meetwaarden die jou worden opgelegd, maar nog belangrijker: kijk iedere dag, in je werk of je vrije tijd, kritisch naar de meetwaarden die jij anderen oplegt. En bescherm daar als een leeuw de speelse, menselijke ruimte die we nog zelf kunnen invullen.  *Over C. This film is a sales and marketing piece for the 1950 Nash Rambler landau, promoting it as a revolutionary, economical (it could get over 30 mpg), and stylish convertible. The film highlights the car's extensive testing and its appeal to a broad range of consumers. Note: The Nash Rambler was a compact, front-engine, rear-drive automobile first manufactured and marketed by the Nash Motors division of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation for model years 1950-1954 — as a sedan, wagon, and notably, a fixed-profile convertible body style. Nash did what up to that point had been considered impossible, successfully establishing a compact market segment. The company did this by coupling the Rambler's size with an upscale complement of features and equipment as its unique selling proposition. It was a small and economical car, but also luxurious. Nash's clever marketing strategy was to introduce the expensive convertible and station wagon models first, and then debut lower cost models. Rebuilding A Rustproof Land Rover - Part #26. The seats that I originally fitted to this 1971 Land Rover came out of a scrap Alfa Romeo car. They were very high quality internally sprung and padded properly. Unfortunately my friend to whom I sold the Land Rover in 2014, fitted a Log burner between the seats which as you can imagine didn't do the seats much good. As part of the rebuild I fitted "slab" type seats which are not sprung at all and to say they are uncomfortable is an understatement as I am big and heavy. Totally by chance I came upon a solution. At the time Sukarno was in power as the first president of Indonesia, serving from 1945 to 1967. Novotny's official designation at this time was the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. It's not exactly clear what year these images were captured, but we believe it is almost certainly 1963 as he is known to have visited Cambodia, North Vietnam, Burma and Indonesia in January of that year. Most of the film is shot from a moving car that was part of Novotny's delegation, past large crowds and Indonesian and Czech flags. At :30, a painting of Sukarno and Novotny is seen by the side of the road, and a banner that welcomes Novotny at 2:06. At 2:38, an Indonesian official, probably part of Suharto's cabinet, smiles for the camera.
