Kroegen en restaurants in de stad maken zich klaar voor het WK dat vanavond gaat beginnen. Sommige kroegen, zoals een paar op het Thorbeckeplein, gaan alle wedstrijden uitzenden. Ook die op de meest onmogelijke tijdstippen.  In een Turks restaurant aan de Burgemeester de Vlugtlaan worden wedstrijden van Nederland, Turkije en Marokko uitgezonden. Volgens Emre Arel, de manager van het restaurant, zijn bijna alle wedstrijden al volgeboekt. En dat terwijl de tijdstippen allerminst gunstig zijn. De groepswedstrijden van Marokko beginnen in Nederland rond middernacht, die van Turkije pas midden in de nacht. Vanwege die tijdstippen zijn de regels voor openingstijden voor horeca tijdelijk versoepeld. Kroegen, cafés en restaurants mogen zo lang als ze willen openblijven. Zolang ze dit 72 uur van tevoren bij de gemeente hebben gemeld. Tot nu toe hebben 340 horecagelegenheden gemeld dat ze langer open blijven, laat een woordvoerder van de gemeente weten. Een andere voorwaarde voor die versoepeling, horeca mogen na hun originele sluitingstijd geen nieuwe mensen meer binnenlaten. Het Turkse restaurant in Nieuw-West heeft een vergunning tot 3 uur 's nachts. Wie daar zondagochtend om 6.00 uur de eerste wedstrijd tegen Australië wil zien, moet dus drie uur van tevoren binnen zijn. Genoeg plekken dus om een wedstrijd te kijken, maar op hele grote schermen, zoals in 2010 en 2014, is een ander verhaal. Alleen Westweelde in het Westerpark laat die dit WK plaatsen. Op het Museumplein komt er vooralsnog ook geen groot scherm. De gemeente laat desgevraagd weten daar op dit moment geen plannen voor te hebben gemaakt.
