Een voormalig Amerikaans restaurant aan de H.J.E. Wenckebachweg in Oost is vandaag grotendeels tegen de vlakte gegaan. In het pand zaten de afgelopen jaren krakers, maar er komt waarschijnlijk een coffeeshop te staan. Vanochtend mochten de krakers hun laatste spullen opruimen. Ze hebben zich nauwelijks tegen de sloop verzet. "Het is wat het is toch. Niets aan te doen", verklaarde een van hen. Een ander, die een camper bestuurde, baalde er duidelijk van. "Al mijn spullen zitten er in." Buurtbewoners en werknemers van omliggende bedrijven die we spreken zijn juist opgelucht. Ze zeggen dat er vaak harde muziek gedraaid werd, bovendien werd er van alles verzameld. "Het werd steeds drukker en uitgebreider met krakers", vertelt iemand die met haar kleinkinderen langsloopt. "En ik weet echt niet waar ze mee bezig waren, dat boeit me verder niet, het was achter het hek, maar het was geen aanwinst voor de buurt." Voor het adres waar het kraakpand staat is een omgevingsvergunning voor een coffeeshop aangevraagd. Niet iedereen zit dat zitten. "Dat zou ik heel erg jammer vingen", vertelt de vrouw met haar kleinkinderen. Toch zijn er ook voorstanders. "Als dat zo is, is dat een mooie plek voor een coffeeshop", zegt een buurtbewoner. De krakers zullen daar weinig van meekrijgen. Zij verkassen naar een andere plek. "Op naar wat beters. In Amsterdam, gewoon ook. Kraken gaat door. Vijf jaar hebben Amsterdammers het moeten missen, maar vanaf zaterdag is het aquarium van Artis weer open. Het gebouw is volledig gestript en weer opgebouwd zoals het in 1882 is ontworpen. De aquaria zijn groter en voor het eerst is het hele gebouw open voor publiek. En ja, dat heeft allemaal wel heel wat gekost: 50 miljoen euro. Het aquarium van Artis, een rijksmonument, is nu in volle glorie hersteld. In de grote hal is met een animatie te zien hoe alle oceanen en rivieren stromen. De centrale hal, met zoet en zoutwatervissen, is compleet vernieuwd. "Het stond er heel slecht bij", vertelt Julian Wolse, de architect die maar liefst tien jaar aan het renovatieplan werkte. "Het zoute water tastte de aquaria, het gebouw en de wanden aan. Er kwamen echt brokstukken naar beneden, veilig was het niet meer." Waar de opstelling voorheen geografisch geordend was, is het nu meer thematisch ingericht. "Je reist als het ware van het zout- en zoetwaterleven in oceanen, door rivieren en langs koraalriffen, naar diepzeeën", legt aquariumcurator Alex Huiberse uit. "Hoe verder je komt, hoe dieper in zee je komt." Geen vissen langer dan twee meter Hij is blij dat het aquarium na vijf jaar weer open is. "De vissen hebben veel meer ruimte en doen het goed in hun nieuwe omgeving." Om de vissen meer ruimte te geven zijn alleen vissen tot twee meter terug in het aquarium. Ook worden er alleen vis uit de zee gehaald die niet gekweekt kunnen worden, maar wel nodig zijn om het ecosysteem in stand te houden. Vissen groter dan twee meter zijn hier niet meer; die zijn allemaal naar andere aquaria gebracht. Maar er zijn nog steeds hele grote vissen te zien, zoals meervallen. "Sommige vissen hebben zelfs al eitjes gelegd, zoals de kleine verpleegstershaai, de zeekatten en de maanvissen. Dus dat is een goed teken." In het aquarium is nu meer aandacht voor bewustwording. Zo kun je met een spel zelf vissen en zien of de gevangen vis bedreigd wordt of niet. Ook is het gebouw nu voor 90 procent toegankelijk. Je kunt dus ook achter de aquaria kijken. Wie een bezoek brengt aan de kelder, ziet de installatie uit 1882 waar het water door microben gefilterd wordt. Kijkje in de open keuken Ook kun je letterlijk een kijkje nemen in de keuken. "Bezoekers kunnen zien wat je klaarmaakt voor de vissen", vertelt dierverzorger Wendy de Jong, die paprika's staat te snijden voor de dieren. "Ja, sommige vissen zijn vegetariër", legt ze lachend uit. "Bezoekers kunnen je nu ook vragen stellen als je bezig bent en dat is heel leuk." De publiekslieveling, 'de Amsterdamse gracht', is gemoderniseerd en aangepast met een biro en een fatbike. En in de hoop dat dit ooit waarheid wordt, zijn er waterplanten geplaatst. De renovatie van het nieuwe aquarium heeft 50 miljoen gekost. Het geld is bijeengebracht door de gemeente Amsterdam, de provincie Noord-Holland, het Rijk, en ook uit fondsen en van particuliere donateurs. You’re Holding the Bag.” It details how Musk convinced Nasdaq to forgo the usual waiting period to include SpaceX in its index fund, potentially exposing retirement savers to what many professional investors believe will be an overinflated stock price. While Musk and early investors are positioned to see their wealth skyrocket, the SpaceX IPO could hurt these regular investors, says Gardner. “He has essentially financially engineered the IPO as a massive wealth transfer from everyday investors to insiders,” Gardner says of Musk. Meer dan honderd buurtbewoners kwamen vanavond af op de informatieavond over de inmiddels beruchte zwemsteiger aan de Borneokade. Jan-Bert Vroege, stadsdeelbestuurder van Oost, kwam tekst en uitleg geven over de gang van zaken. Er heerste teleurstelling, maar ook frustratie over hoe het zover heeft kunnen komen. Na jaren van juridische procedures kwam er deze week uitsluitsel via de Raad van State: de steiger wordt ingekort en de klagende buurtbewoners krijgen elders een ligplek met hun woonboot. Een besluit dat zorgt voor grote teleurstelling in de buurt. Daarnaast plaatste het stadsdeel al hekken om de steiger in te korten. Dat zorgde voor veel commotie onder de bewoners die strijden voor het behoud van hun zwemplek. Het was dan ook niet verrassend dat de gemeente besloot een informatieavond te organiseren. De meeste buurtbewoners kwamen aan met hoge verwachtingen." De steiger moet eerder vergroot worden dan verkleind", vertelt een bewoner die erg baalt van het gesteggel rondom zijn geliefde zwemplek. De meeste bewoners weten door de recente uitspraak van de Raad van State ook wel dat de kans klein is dat Jan-Bert Vroege vanavond zal aankondigen dat de steiger weer in zijn oude glorie hersteld wordt, maar de wens is de vader van de gedachte bij sommige bewoners. "Ik hoop gewoon dat we een statement kunnen maken", vertelt iemand voorafgaand aan de bijeenkomst. "Ik vind dat de gemeente niet helemaal antwoord heeft gegeven op de vraag wat ze zelf fout hebben gedaan en waarom dit zo lang heeft kunnen duren allemaal", vertelt een bewoner na afloop. Iemand anders miste een 'stip op de horizon'. "Ik had gehoopt op meer perspectief", zegt hij enigszins teleurgesteld. Ook nam iemand het op voor de woonbootbewoners, die al jaren strijden tegen de overlast. "Ik ben ook opgekomen voor de woonbootbewoners. Dit leidt tot een polarisatie die niet gezond is", vertelt hij. Eerder werd al duidelijk dat de woonbootbewoners, die gelijk kregen van de Raad van State, te maken hebben met bedreigingen. De woonboot van het stel is besmeurd met urine en er is rode vloeistof op het dek gegooid, vertelden ze geëmotioneerd in de rechtbank afgelopen week. Jan-Bert Vroege, die veel vragen kreeg van de bewoners, kijkt positief terug op de avond. Op de vraag welke fouten de gemeente heeft gemaakt is hij duidelijk: ze hadden de tik op de vingers van de Raad van State niet zien aankomen. "Dat is de voornaamste fout. Wij dachten heel lang dat wij het juiste hadden gedaan. We dachten dat we goed bezig waren, maar dat was niet zo", vertelt hij na afloop. En hoe nu verder? Het wijzigen van het bestemmingsplan werd ook vanavond aangewezen als dé oplossing, al is dat wel iets voor de toekomst. "We hopen dat de gemeenteraad ergens volgend jaar een besluit gaat nemen dat het bestemmingsplan kan worden gewijzigd", vertelt Vroege. De komende zes weken blijft de steiger ingekort en zal het stadsdeel met handhavers gaan monitoren welk effect het inkorten heeft. Wat de gevolgen zullen zijn van die uitkomsten, is nog onduidelijk. We've gathered the Pride parade dates for Europe's capital cities in one place. However, these are just a selection of the many Pride events taking place. 🌈 Why is Pride Month actually celebrated in June? Pride Month has its origins in the so-called Stonewall Riots in New York. On the night of 27–28 June 1969, guests of the ‘Stonewall Inn’, a queer bar, fought back against repeated police raids on queer venues. Today, the protests are regarded as a turning point in the fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ people and as the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Before the Stonewall Riots, LGBTQ+ people generally did not speak openly about their sexual orientation or identity. Just one year later, the first Pride parade took place in New York. Het pact moet de druk op de buitengrenzen van Europa verlichten, asielprocedures versnellen en zorgen voor een eerlijkere verdeling van asielzoekers binnen de Europese Unie. Maar werkt dat ook in de praktijk? In deze video legt EW uit hoe het pact in elkaar zit, welke rol de Europese buitengrenzen krijgen en wat de gevolgen kunnen zijn voor Nederland, Ter Apel en het Europese asielbeleid. Daarnaast moeten lidstaten meer verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor de opvang van asielzoekers. Landen kunnen daarbij asielzoekers overnemen van grensstaten, maar mogen er ook voor kiezen financieel bij te dragen in plaats van opvangplaatsen beschikbaar te stellen. Voor Nederland kan het pact gevolgen hebben voor de instroom van asielzoekers en de druk op opvanglocaties zoals Ter Apel. Tegelijkertijd blijft de vraag bestaan of de nieuwe regels voldoende effectief zijn en hoe de uitvoering in de praktijk zal verlopen. Ook de terugkeer van afgewezen asielzoekers blijft een uitdaging. De Europese Unie werkt aan zogenoemde terugkeerhubs buiten de EU, maar de juridische en politieke obstakels zijn groot en concrete locaties zijn er nog niet.
