Recipe Ingredients - 1 cup jasmine rice - 400ml coconut milk - 200ml water - White pepper and salt - 4 Allspice berries - 15 large prawns/shrimp, deveined - ½ tablespoon olive oil - ½ Tbsp all bay seasoning - 1 ½ limes - 2 plum tomatoes - ¼ large red onion - ½ bunch coriander Method 1. Rinse the rice under cold water twice or until the water runs clear. Drain all the water before placing the rice into the rice cooker. Add the coconut milk to the rice cooker. Add the water to the empty tin of coconut and swirl to rinse the can. Tip this coconut water into the rice cooker. 2. To the rice cooker, add the allspice berries, a few cracks of white pepper and a pinch of salt to season. 3. Close the lid, then turn the cooker on. While the rice is cooking, make the marinade the prawns and the salsa to accompany the rice. 4. For the marinade, place the prawns into a bowl with the olive oil, a pinch of salt, all bay seasoning and the zest of a lime. Mix well and place aside to marinade for 10 minutes. 5. To make the salsa, slice the tomatoes in half and remove the core. Slice each half into four wedges, lengthwise and dice. Finely dice the red onion. Chiffonard all the coriander leaves and separate into two. Keep half aside for the rice later on. Mix all together with the juice of a lime and a pinch of salt. 6. Once most of the excess liquid has evaporated from the rice cooker, add the marinated prawn to the top of the rice cooker and remove the allspice berries. Close the lid and continue cooking until the rice is soft and the prawns are cooked through. 7. Add the remaining coriander and fluff with a rice paddle. 8. Serve in a bowl with the salsa and a wedge of lime.

Het type ebola dat nu slachtoffers maakt in oost-Congo heet Bungibuyo. Hij is vernoemd naar een stadje in buurland Uganda, waar de ziekte 2007 slachtoffers maakte. Daar kijken ze met gemengde gevoelens naar het rondzingen van die naam.

Op de Kattenburgerstraat draait dit weekend alles om verliezen. Niet omdat de deelnemers slecht zijn, maar juist omdat ze tot de wereldtop anti-schaken behoren. In Amsterdam wordt op  7 juni het Wereldkampioenschap anti-schaken gespeeld, een schaakvariant waarbij het doel precies tegenovergesteld is aan normaal schaken, namelijk wie als eerste al zijn eigen stukken kwijtraakt, wint. Zo'n twintig spelers uit onder meer India, Oekraïne, Frankrijk en Duitsland zijn naar de hoofdstad afgereisd om te strijden om de wereldtitel. Daarmee is Amsterdam dit weekend het middelpunt van een kleine, maar fanatieke internationale gemeenschap die zich volledig heeft toegelegd op deze bijzondere denksport. Voor buitenstaanders klinkt anti-schaken misschien als een grap, maar volgens de deelnemers schuilt er juist veel strategie achter het spel. Omdat slaan verplicht is wanneer dat kan, moeten spelers voortdurend vooruitdenken en proberen hun tegenstander te dwingen hun stukken van het bord te halen. “Het is vreemd, ja,” zegt een deelnemer. “Maar wij zijn vreemde mensen, dus dat past eigenlijk ook wel.” Die regels vragen om een compleet andere manier van kijken naar het schaakspel. Waar een gewone schaker zijn stukken probeert te beschermen, zoekt een anti-schaker juist naar manieren om ze zo snel mogelijk kwijt te raken. “Ik ben een waardeloze schaker, maar een hele goede anti-schaker”, zegt organisator Richard van Es met een lach. Vijfde wereldkampioenschap anti-schaken Het wereldkampioenschap wordt dit jaar voor de vijfde keer georganiseerd. Hoewel anti-schaken bij het grote publiek relatief onbekend is, leeft de sport online onder spelers uit tientallen landen. The F-4 is an American tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it entered service with the Navy in 1961 before it was adopted by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force, and by the mid-1960s it had become a major part of their air arms. Phantom production ran from 1958 to 1981 with a total of 5,195 aircraft built, making it the most produced American supersonic military aircraft in history, and cementing its position as a signature combat aircraft of the Cold War. Van eigenaar van twee restaurants en raadslid naar een voltijdbaan als wethouder. Voor D66'er Elise Moeskops is het aankomende week hoogstwaarschijnlijk realiteit. Vandaag had ze daarom haar laatste werkdag in haar restaurant aan het Purmerplein in Noord. Moeskops was de afgelopen vier jaar D66-raadslid en hield zich onder meer bezig met verkeer en de veiligheid van vrouwen in de openbare ruimte. "Ik heb altijd een beetje een bestuurlijke kant gehad", vertelt ze. "Ik wil gewoon graag dingen regelen. En ik ben soms een beetje te ongeduldig voor het raadslidmaatschap." Mede daarom stapt ze dus over naar de post van wethouder. Ze zal dan ook over verkeerszaken gaan, want ze neemt die portefeuille van wethouder Melanie van der Horst over. Gaat ze net als haar voorganger, die bijvoorbeeld op veel wegen de maximumsnelheid van 30 kilometer per uur invoerde, ook vergaande besluiten nemen? "Ik denk dat Melanie van der Horst al een hoop dingen heeft gedaan die ook op mijn wishlist zouden staan", antwoordt Moeskops. "Zoals die 30 kilometer per uur. Ik vraag mezelf oprecht af of zulke rigoureuze ingrepen op dit moment nodig zijn. Tegelijkertijd is het wel iets om op voort te bouwen." Ook zij benadrukt dat Amsterdam 'steeds drukker' wordt en dat er 'stevige keuzes' gemaakt moeten worden.  Om belangenverstelling te voorkomen wordt het restaurant aan het Purmerplein verkocht. Moeskops heeft daarnaast nog een tweede restaurant in het centrum, dat restaurant wordt overgenomen door haar partner. "Het is ook wel een beetje verdrietig", zegt ze. "Ik heb een grote liefde voor wijn. Ik ga denk ik het praten met mensen heel erg missen. Maar ik denk dat ik maar heel veel etentjes thuis moet organiseren." Het aantal meldingen van burenruzies neemt al twee jaar af, maar het aantal complexe burenruzies neemt percentueel gezien juist toe. Dat zijn conflicten waarbij psychosociale problemen, verward gedrag, dementie of taal- en cultuurbarrières een rol spelen. Een deel van de bemiddelaars van BeterBuren krijgt nu een speciale cursus, zodat ze dit gedrag kunnen herkennen en weten hoe ze ermee om kunnen gaan. Je kunt je zelf melden bij BeterBuren als je een conflict hebt met je buren. In 2024 gebeurde dat in Amsterdam nog 1408 keer, in 2025 ging het om 1291 meldingen. Het aandeel complexe zaken steeg daarentegen in diezelfde periode van vijfentwintig naar dertig procent. Een paar jaar geleden was dat nog twintig procent. Daarom is BeterBuren dit jaar met een pilot gestart: dertig van de tweehonderdvijftig bemiddelaars worden nu opgeleid om hen te kunnen inzetten bij dit soort complexe ruzies. En zo'n training kunnen ze wel gebruiken, want wie denkt dat de bemiddelaars professionals zijn, die heeft het mis. "Ik maak documentaires en podcasts", zegt bemiddelaar Xander. Bemiddelaar Marit: "Ik werk bij de gemeente Amsterdam." Geen hulpverleners Je zou de vraag kunnen stellen of je deze niet-professionals wel moet inzetten bij zulke soms heftige situaties. "Die vraag snap ik heel goed", zegt Claudia Helsloot, directeur van BeterBuren. "Bij ons is ook altijd het verhaal: zijn we niet naar hulpverlening aan het afglijden, want we zijn geen hulpverleners. We blijven bemiddelen bij een burenruzie, dus we zijn er niet om mensen met ander gedrag te helpen om te herstellen, maar om de situatie te verbeteren waar zij en hun buren inzitten."
