At least 72 people died during the attempt. The sudden influx of migrants overwhelmed the city's residents, leading to a humanitarian crisis while border police deployed water cannons, tear gas and warning shots to deter people from crossing. According to Spain's Interior Ministry, nearly all of the migrants returned to Morocco just a day later. Miriyam Aouragh, an anthropologist and the daughter of Moroccan immigrants to Europe, says the driving factors for the mass movement are a combination of shifting entry policies to Spain and increasing economic inequality in Morocco that "has given a sort of empowering incentive to people to try to go to Spain" via Ceuta. The city, which is surrounded by Morocco along a five-mile-long border, dates back to the Phoenician era and has been under Portuguese or Spanish control since 1415. The Moroccan government claims that Ceuta is occupied and colonized territory, while Spain considers it an integral part of the Spanish state. Zij deden het afgelopen jaar opnieuw onderzoek naar het koraal rondom Bonaire. In vijftig jaar tijd is er zo'n 90 procent van de oorspronkelijke hoeveelheid afgestorven. Het beschermde koraal rondom het eiland staat al jaren onder druk. Opwarming van de aarde, vervuiling en toerisme zorgen ervoor dat er steeds meer verdwijnt. Zembla deed in 2022 al onderzoek naar de staat van het Nederlandse koraal. Een grote brand in het Westelijk Havengebied; het komt meerdere keren per jaar voor. Uit onderzoek van AT5 blijkt dat de brandweer de afgelopen jaren honderden keren moest uitrukken om een brand te bestrijden. Maar waarom is er zo vaak brand in Westpoort? 'Luie Amsterdammers' blijken een belangrijke reden te zijn waarom de lucht in de stad soms zwart kleurt. Een grote zwarte rookwolk kleurt de lucht boven de stad. De tiplijn van AT5 stroomt vol met beelden die Amsterdammers maken van de rook. "De wolk is goed te zien vanuit de Indische Buurt", "hier in Noord is de rookwolk goed zichtbaar" en "zelfs vanaf de Zuidas zien wij de rookwolk". Het zijn reacties bij de vele foto's en video's die AT5 ontvangt. De oorzaak die meestal de reden is? Een brand in het Westelijk Havengebied bij een van de duizenden bedrijven die Westpoort vullen. Het is iets wat Amsterdammers een paar keer per jaar meemaken. Honderden incidenten Vanwege de hoeveelheid branden die in het gebied voorkomen, onderzocht AT5 het aantal branden, de groottes daarvan en wat nou de oorzaken zijn van die grote branden. Sinds 2022 moest de brandweer 214 keer uitrukken voor een brand in het havengebied. Daarnaast waren er dezelfde periode 494 brandgeruchten, waarbij er een vermoeden is van brand, maar er nog veel onzeker is. Die meldingen worden onder andere verstuurd door automatische brandmelders, maar zitten ook regelmatig fout. Van de 214 branden waar de brandweer voor op pad moest, moest er 158 keer worden opgeschaald. Daarvan gingen veruit de meeste om 'kleine branden', wat betekent dat er één tankspuitauto ter plaatse hoeft te komen om de brand te blussen. 27 keer ging het om een 'middelbrand' (twee tankautospuiten), veertien keer om een 'grote brand' (drie tankautospuiten) en acht keer om zelfs een 'zeer grote brand' (vier of meer tankautospuiten). Zijn de branden gevaarlijk? 214 brandincidenten klinkt als heel erg veel, maar is dat ook zo? Volgens Tom de Nooij, brandveiligheidsexpert van Riskonet, valt dat op zich wel mee. "Als je kijkt naar de hoeveelheid branden in vergelijking met het aantal industriepanden die in het gebied zitten, dan is het natuurlijk gering", aldus De Nooij. "Maar zijn het er te veel? Ja. Elke brand is er een te veel en neemt risico's met zich mee." Volgens De Nooij zijn branden in industriepanden een stuk risicovoller dan bijvoorbeeld branden in woningen. "De vuurlast is vele malen groter bij dit soort panden. Dus als dat ongecontroleerd aan het branden is, dan krijg je veel grotere rookontwikkeling en toxische gassen die ontsnappen." Raymond Pikee, teamleider bij de gezamenlijke brandweer in het Westelijk Havengebied, legt uit dat bij grote branden in Westpoort er ook altijd meetteams de omliggende wijken ingaan om de concentraties te meten. Eigenlijk worden er nooit te hoge concentraties vastgesteld, maar "elke rook is natuurlijk niet gezond". De Veiligheidsregio, waar de brandweer onder valt, communiceert dan ook vaak naar omwonenden om ramen en deuren te sluiten en de ventilatie uit te schakelen. Bij heftige rookontwikkelingen waar het extra belangrijk is dat de rook niet de huizen in komt, kan er een NL-Alert worden verstuurd. Zoals bij de enorme brand bij een opslagpand voor elektrische deelscooters in maart van dit jaar. Voornamelijk bij twee soorten bedrijven Kijkend naar de grote en zeer grote branden die de afgelopen jaren in het Westelijk Havengebied hebben plaatsgevonden, valt er wat op. Die vinden voornamelijk plaats bij twee soorten bedrijven: afvalverwerkers en schrootbedrijven. Van de 22 grote en zeer grote branden ging het 17 keer om een brand bij zo'n soort bedrijf. In het Westelijk Havengebied zitten verschillende soorten afval- en schrootverwerkers. Ze verwerken afval van Amsterdamse huishoudens en bedrijven en zelfs schroot van over de hele wereld. Beide branches hebben te maken met hetzelfde probleem dat de branden veroorzaakt: batterijen en accu's die tussen het afval en schroot zitten. "Batterijen, vapes en fietsaccu's", zo somt Marcel Hendriks, de manager van de scheidingsinstallatie van het Afval Energie Bedrijf AEB, de boosdoeners op. Bij het AEB, waar dagelijks tonnen aan Amsterdams huisvuil binnenkomen, zijn wekelijks (kleine) brandjes hierdoor. "We zien in vergelijking met vorig jaar een toename van 50 procent aan branden die ontstaan door weggegooide fietsaccu's. We praten dan gemiddeld over drie tot vier keer per week."
