At the time his official designation was the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. It's not exactly clear what year these images were captured, but we believe it is almost certainly 1963 as he is known to have visited Cambodia and North Vietnam in January of that year. Apparently in North Vietnam he met with Hồ Chí Minh. (Note: we do not know who shot the film, but whoever they were was probably in the entourage of the President, and might have been a Western journalist as the film originated from an American collection.) The film begins with shots taken from a moving vehicle, followed at 0:23 with the state welcome of Novotny by President Sukarno, who is seen at his side. (Sukarno was the first president of Indonesia and served from 1949 until 1967.) At 0:42, Sukarno and Novotny get into a car together. The scene shifts to another location at 1:04, with a convoy of cars in the Presidential motorcade shown; the motorcade includes Jeeps and what appears to be a Buick Special Sedan, Model 41. At 1:20, a banner welcomes Novotny to Indonesia. After a lot of POV driving shots, the film shows groups of performers in traditional dress parading past camera. Het is nog een beetje als een oase in de woestijn, maar het allereerste park op Strandeiland is geopend. Op dit nieuwste deel van IJburg zijn nog geen permanente woningen, maar sinds februari zijn de eerste bewoners er neergestreken. Het grootste deel van het eiland moet nog worden volgebouwd, maar de verste punt ligt nu al het Tagorepark met daarin speeltoestellen, sportveldjes en school- en buurttuinen.  Het moet een plek worden van ontspanning, maar ook de sportieve IJburger kan zich er gaan uitleven. Vandaag waren het vooral de jongelingen die op fietsen en steppen in de rondte gingen op de twee bmx-banen die het park heeft. "Ik heb net van hem een nieuw ding geleerd", vertelt een enthousiaste jongen. "Ik oefen één sprong de hele tijd, dat is echt fantastisch." Het park is vernoemd naar Rabindranath Tagore, een beroemd dichter uit India. Hij wist judo naar het land te brengen en hij stond voor zorgen voor je omgeving en elkaar en mede daarom is het park naar hem vernoemd.  Voor Zeeger Ernsting, dagelijks bestuurder van stadsdeel Oost, is de opening een mijlpaal. Dat het momenteel nog ontbreekt aan woningen dichtbij het park is een bewuste keuze. "Het is in het verleden wel eens gebeurd dat je een stuk stad bouwt en dat die voorzieningen later kwamen. Daar hadden mensen wel last van, dus daarom moet het meteen compleet." Basisschool Na de zomer opent er een nieuwe basisschool op het Strandeiland en dus staat een team van de Poseidon School bij een kraampje tijdens de parkopening. "We hebben op de kraam foto's van de nieuwe school die ook verderop te zien is", aldus directeur Dana Bruins. "Het is op dit moment nog het enige gebouw dat er echt al staat."  De leegte rondom het park valt op en ook voor de kinderen die naar de bmx-baan zijn gekomen, was het best even reizen. "Ik heb een half uur moeten steppen met een vriend om hier naar toe te gaan", vertelt een jongen. Al zijn ze al met al heel blij met de ruimte en de twee banen die er op IJburg zijn bijgekomen. "Als je het eenmaal durft, dan kun je grote jumps doen." Al jaren is er een schreeuwend tekort aan personeel in de technische sector. En het wordt alleen maar lastiger om aan technische mbo-professionals te komen. Daarom hebben de gemeente Amsterdam, het onderwijs en het bedrijfsleven de handen in elkaar geslagen. Via het programma Baan met Toekomst hopen bedrijven zij-instromers warm te maken voor het vak. In de hal van het ROC op het NDSM-terrein kan je een klein lesje lassen volgen. Jelena werkt al negentien jaar in de zorg en wil wel eens keer wat anders. Constructielassen, dat lijkt haar wel wat. "Ja, dat lijkt me echt heel leuk. Ik vind het heel erg leuk dat je secuur moet werken, en nauwkeurig werken. En dat je uiteindelijk uit heel veel dingen kunt kiezen." Op deze oriëntatiedag worden werkgevers en potentiële zij-instromers aan elkaar voorgesteld. Doel is het terugdringen van het personeelstekort in de technische sector, zegt Soraya van Pinxteren, programmamanager bij Servicepunt Techniek Groot-Amsterdam. "Er zijn onwijs veel vacatures. Alleen al 120.000 het komend jaar, en dat blijft naar verwachting ook stijgen. Dus om een stad of heel Nederland draaiende te houden, zijn de mensen die hier rondlopen ontiegelijk hard nodig." Niels Denneman probeert de bezoekers warm te laten lopen voor het vak lassen. Er zijn veel te weinig lassers in Nederland en Denneman denkt wel te weten waarom. "De mbo-vakken zijn een beetje uit de gratie geraakt. Leerlingen moeten tegenwoordig minimaal naar de havo. Dat komt ook door de kenniseconomie van nu denk ik. Dat vakken waarbij je met de handen moet werken uit de gratie zijn geraakt." Dat denkt ook Emmi Fens, hr-manager bij een bedrijf dat onder meer leidingen en rioleringen aanlegt. "Je ziet gewoon dat de vakkennis in Nederland, en waarschijnlijk wereldwijd verdwijnt. Dus de vakkennis van daadwerkelijk iets met je handen doen. Het wordt waarschijnlijk ook niet erg geënthousiasmeerd naar de verschillende doelgroepen toe. Ik zie wel enigszins verandering, maar naar mijn mening kan het wel wat meer." Fens vindt dit soort oriëntatiedagen hartstikke goed én nuttig. "Tot nu toe hebben wij drie nieuwe collega's weten te werven via Baan met Toekomst. Drie mensen met hele verschillende achtergronden die ook alle drie in een andere functie zijn aangetreden. Onder wie ook een statushouder, dat is ook wel uniek om te benoemen denk ik. En we zijn heel erg tevreden over deze nieuwe collega's." Jelena weet het bijna zeker: ze wil lasser worden. "Ik heb me ook gelijk ingeschreven voor een verdiepingsdag, en dan ben ik benieuwd waar het schip strandt." Rice cooker banana bread - 4 overripe bananas, peeled - 2 eggs - 60ml milk - 120ml olive oil - Sea salt - 1 tsp ground cinnamon - 1 tsp baking powder - 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) - 50g (1.7 oz) rolled oats, plus extra for sprinkling - 120g plain (all-purpose) flour - 110g wholemeal flour butter, to serve method Using a fork, mashthe bananas in a large bowl. Next, add the eggs, milk and olive oil, then whisk to combine well. Chuck in a pinch of salt, the cinnamon, baking powder and bicarb, as well as the rolled oats and both the flours. Give everything a good whisk until just incorporated, then pour the batter into the greased rice cooker bowl, and sprinkle more oats on top. start the rice cooker for one cycle and then leave to rest once cooked in the rice cooker for 10 min. Remove and leave on a rack to cool before you slice and serve with butter and honey.

Het is dinsdagochtend, tien uur, als Ali Karaali met zijn zoon Rayan komt aanlopen ("Kiyan zou ook meekomen, maar die voelde zich niet lekker"). De meeste kinderen zitten op dit tijdstip in het klaslokaal, maar de achtjarige Rayan niet. Net als zijn twee jaar oudere broer gaat hij niet naar school. Beide kinderen zijn non-verbaal en hebben extra ondersteuning nodig, maar dat lukte op een reguliere basisschool niet.  Een non-verbaal kind gebruikt niet of nauwelijks gesproken taal om te communiceren. Rayan is helemaal niet naar school geweest, nadat zijn broer Kiyan het al op drie scholen had geprobeerd: één daarvan weigerde hem, op de twee andere lukte het niet om aan te sluiten bij wat hij als non-verbaal kind nodig had. Een doorverwijzing naar het speciaal onderwijs leek in eerste instantie uitkomst te bieden, maar de school waarnaar hij verwezen werd bleek niet bij hem te passen.  Scholen voor speciaal onderwijs zijn onderverdeeld in vier clusters. Kiyan werd naar cluster 3 verwezen (voor kinderen met lichamelijke, verstandelijke of meervoudige beperkingen), terwijl hij waarschijnlijk een taalontwikkelingsstoornis heeft, die onder cluster 2 valt. Karaali: "Op de scholen waar wij naartoe werden gestuurd hadden ze daar helemaal geen expertise in." Omdat het Kiyan niet lukte om de verplichte onderzoeken af te ronden waarmee een taalontwikkelingsstoornis officieel gediagnosticeerd wordt, kreeg hij geen doorverwijzing voor dit cluster. Maanden thuis Het verhaal van Rayan en Kiyan staat op niet op zichzelf. In Amsterdam gaan steeds meer jonge kinderen niet naar school. Van de 821 kinderen die vorig jaar niet op een school waren ingeschreven, was twaalf procent vijf of zes jaar oud. Dat komt neer op zo'n honderd kinderen. Waarschijnlijk ligt het daadwerkelijke aantal thuiszitters veel hoger, omdat veel van hen – net als Kiyan – officieel nog wel op een basisschool staan ingeschreven. De Onderwijs Consumenten Organisatie (OCO) maakt zich zorgen over die groep, en stuurde eind vorig jaar een brandbrief naar scholen en de gemeente, samen met Cliëntenbelang en Jeugdplatform Amsterdam. "Het gaat om kinderen van vier, vijf of zes jaar, die net starten of willen starten op de basisschool, en bij wie in die fase al problemen ontstaan", zegt directeur Floor Kaspers van OCO. "We zien dan dat scholen zeggen: 'We weten niet of we dit kunnen.' Dan krijg je dus dat hele jonge kinderen al thuis komen te zitten." Van boommarters en nachtvlinders tot uilen en zelfs reebokken: ze komen allemaal voorbij. Merel en Martin maakten al eerder, met succes, films over de Amsterdamse natuur. Maar voor dit nieuwste project doken ze de nacht in. "Die liefde voor de Amsterdamse natuur hebben we allebei zo erg", vertelt Merel Westrik. "We vinden het fantastisch om Amsterdammers te laten zien wat er in hun stad gebeurt als iedereen ligt te slapen", vervolgt ze. Maanden wachten Een natuurdocumentaire is ook veel wachten. Zo waren ze maanden bezig om de Amsterdamse boommarters op beeld te krijgen, iets wat uiteindelijk wel lukt. Maar het maken duurde nog langer, maar liefst elf jaar waren ze bezig. How does a spacecraft know where it is when it’s billions of miles from Earth? For Voyager, the answer was stars, sunlight, and a surprisingly clever backup system. Voyager 2 used star trackers to determine its orientation in space, while a Sun sensor helped keep its antenna pointed back toward Earth. But during planetary flybys, the Sun could be blocked from view, so Voyager relied on onboard gyroscopes to maintain its orientation until the Sun reappeared. This level of accuracy was crucial, because when you’re navigating the outer Solar System, even a tiny error can send you hopelessly off course.

De werkgeversorganisaties hebben kritiek, de vakbonden dreigen met acties en oppositiepartijen verwijten het kabinet met te weinig goede plannen te komen.   Hoogleraar politicologie Tom van der Meer adviseerde het kabinet over de vorming van het minderheidskabinet. Hij hamerde voor de start van het minderheidskabinet op een goede samenwerking en eenduidige communicatie. Maar hij ziet daar nu nog te weinig van terechtkomen.
