Once it arrives there, the ship is seized by the Royal Navy. The film documents a pivotal movement in the history of the state of Israel. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, survivors were evacuated to Palestine, even though the British did not want them to migrate. Here, hundreds of refugees -- some of them apparently survivors of Buchenwald -- are shown crammed aboard a ship dubbed "SS Unafraid". The ship sails across the Mediterranean but is soon spotted by British aircraft, and then escorted by a small flotilla of Royal Navy ships. Soon, a destroyer draws alongside and offloads a prize crew. The ship is then deviated to the harbor at Haifa, where its occupants will likely face deportation to an internment camp in Cyprus. The film begins with shots of a man with field glasses searching the horizon, and other refugees aboard the ship looking out from the ship's rail. Announcement are made (:52) aboard the ship and those who were huddled below decks allowed to come out for air. A British destroyer is visible (1:22). Various shots of refugees, some of them apparently quite seasick, follow. At (2;24) the destroyer is shown again. At (2:45), the assembled crowd begins to fashion banners and an Israeli flag is hoisted at (3:04) and the crowd stands at attention as it rises to the mast top. At (3:44) another flag is hoisted on the ship's fantail and the crowd sings what will soon be the national anthem. At 4:31 a banner reads "Haganah Ship Unafraid". At (4:47), a fake sign used as a disguise, marked Karaco Adalia, is removed from the stern of the ship and thrown overboard. At (4:58) the British destroyer looms large. At (5:12) a woman is shown in labor aboard ship. At (5:23) the baby is delivered and the mother is shown post-partum. At (5:51) more shots of the destroyer escort. At (6:20), another shot of the banner "Hagana Ship Unafraid" is seen. At (6:30) British sailors board the ship from the destroyer, which has now come alongside the refugee boat. At (7:17) a signalman uses flags to communicate with the destroyer crew. At (7:26) a large banner is unfurled reading "Open the door Bevin... your Tommies want to get out and we are coming." (This refers to Ernest Bevin a British statesman, trade union leader and Labour Party politician who was Foreign Secretary when the Palestinian Mandate ended. He played an important role in the end of the Mandate of Palestine and was strongly opposed to the establishment of the State of Israel.) At (7:36) British sailors are seen aboard the ship, which has now apparently reached the docks at Haifa. At (8:50) a mother nurses her young baby. The End (9:25). Night-time shots of refugees with large packs boarding rubber boats. Crowded onto deck, rushing into hold and covering selves with tarpaulin when British airplane flies overhead. Airplane is an RAF : Lancaster. British warship (destroyer) sited, Brits jump from their decks to refugee ship. English and Hebrew sign "Haganah Ship Unafraid" and "Jewish" flag raised. De Amsterdamse ontwerper Joost Grootens is uit 1200 inzendingen gekozen tot een van de 10 finalisten om de nieuwe ontwerper van het eurobiljet te worden. Zijn favoriete biljet is het vijf eurobriefje met Maria Callas, vertelt hij in zijn kantoor op Groenhoedenveem in het Oostelijk Havengebied. Eigenlijk is Joost Grootens boekenmaker - hij ontwierp atlassen, bijbels en woordenboeken - maar toen hij vorig jaar op de prijsvraag stuitte om de nieuwe eurobiljetten te ontwerpen, besloot hij het gewoon te proberen. "Ik had niet gedacht dat zo'n klein object zoveel lastigheden in zich had." Zo moet je de waarde van het biljet altijd kunnen zien, ook als je hem dubbelvouwt. En dan stelde de Europese Centrale Bank ook nog allerlei veiligheidseisen, zoals een watermerk, een tactiele laag en een metallic strip. Op vakantie in Seoul kreeg hij een mailtje met een link naar een online vergadering. "Wat aardig dat ze iedereen persoonlijk afwijzen, dacht ik. Maar toen ik het opende, zaten er vijf mensen in een zaal in Frankfurt. Hier was misschien toch wat anders aan de hand." Het is voor het eerst in twintig jaar dat de euro een ander uiterlijk krijgt. Dat is vooral om te voorkomen dat geldvervalsers te goed worden in hun werk. Ook krijgen de biljetten extra beveiliging. Er zijn tien ontwerpen geselecteerd in twee categorieën: vogels en Europese iconen. Het werk van Grootens is geselecteerd in die laatste categorie. "Ik heb er geen helden van willen maken, maar ze menselijk laten zijn. Ik wil dat ze van nu zijn, gewoon als mens." Zo draagt Leonardo da Vinci op zijn honderd euro geen beroemde hoed, noch baard. "Het gaat om de ogen." En op zijn blauwe briefje van twintig prijkt Marie Curie. "Ik vind deze heel mooi, omdat je ziet dat het een oude vrouw is, met rimpels." Europeanen krijgen tot 21 september de tijd om te stemmen op hun favoriete ontwerp. Naar verwachting komen de nieuwe briefjes in 2030 in omloop. According to an internal government document, the plans to round up and deport Haitian immigrants could start this week. President Trump has long expressed animus toward Haitians in the United States. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he amplified false claims that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats and dogs. “The fear is so huge in our community,” says Vilès Dorsainvil, co-founder and executive director of the Haitian Support Center in Springfield, Ohio. Due to the risk of violence in Haiti, the U.S. government is warning American citizens not to travel to the country. The financial institution has faced significant pressure from protesters for providing more than $2.5 billion in financing to CoreCivic and the GEO Group, which work directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While the bank denied that activist pressure affected its decision, the De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition counted it as a victory. “It was absolutely thanks to the incredible work of the activists,” says Jake Ephros, a Democratic Socialist member of Jersey City Council, who helped push the municipality to pull over $200 million in city funds from the bank. We also speak with Rev. John Edgerton, senior minister of Old South Church in Boston and a board member of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization. This comes as OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, recently disclosed that one of its experimental AI agents went rogue and secretly hacked into the infrastructure of several other companies in what was supposed to be a controlled test. Over 1,100 scientists and senior employees at top AI firms have called on the U.S. government to back international efforts to “deliberately pace” the development of the world’s most advanced AI systems. “What we’re talking about now are AI systems that also have goals on their own that they can actively go out and pursue in the world,” says AI researcher Max Tegmark, a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Vervolgens ontstaat een confrontatie tussen de Palestijnse dorpelingen en de Israëlische kolonisten. Het gevolg: 6 doden, onder wie 4 Palestijnen en 2 Israëli’s. Op beelden die na de dodelijke clash gedeeld worden, is Benyahu Mellet te zien, een kolonist en lid van de 'veiligheidseenheid' van Havat Gilad. In de video slaat hij een Palestijn met de kolf van zijn geweer. Vervolgens weet de dorpeling Ramadan Farouk het geweer van Mellet vast te krijgen en schiet hij de Israëli dood. Daarop wordt Farouk doodgeschoten, en met hem ook 3 andere Palestijnen: de broer van Farouk, Ibrahim Ramadan, en hun 2 neven Jawad en Imran Ramadan. De politie is nog altijd op zoek naar de inzittenden van de auto die gistermiddag crashte in Nieuw-West. Het voertuig was betrokken bij een plofkraak in het Duitse dorpje Fürth in de deelstaat Hessen, waarna de auto gistermiddag werd gesignaleerd in Nederland. Na een achtervolging kwam de auto vol met explosieven tot stilstand in de Nierkerkestraat, waarna de inzittenden op de vlucht sloegen. Veel bewoners van de Nierkerkestraat en de Rengerskerkestraat in Nieuw-West zijn een dag na het incident nog altijd geschrokken. "Ik woon hier al zestien jaar en het wordt hier steeds crimineler", zegt een buurtbewoner die vandaag haar hond uitlaat. Omdat in het voertuig explosieven zaten, werd de omgeving in een straal van 100 meter ontruimd. Bewoners werden daardoor tijdelijk opgevangen in een buurthuis. "Ik had geluk, want ik mocht binnenblijven", legt een vrouw uit die schuin tegenover de plek woont waar de auto crashte. "Daarna vlogen er alleen maar drones en helikopters over." De Explosieven Opruimingsdienst Defensie (EOD) heeft de explosieven in de auto veiliggesteld. De politie heeft op de plek lang onderzoek gedaan. Kort na half tien mochten bewoners weer terugkeren naar huis. Inzittende auto nog voortvluchtig De inzittenden van de auto die in Nieuw-West tot stilstand kwam, sloegen daarna op de vlucht. Bewoners zeggen vandaag dat het ging om drie mannen die uit de auto kwamen. Een woordvoerder van de politie kan dat niet bevestigen en benadrukt dat er wordt gezocht naar meerdere verdachten. De inzittenden reden in een auto die betrokken was bij een plofkraak in het Duitse Fürth. Een journalist van de regionale krant Odenwälder Zeitung laat weten dat in 2024 ook al een plofkraak plaatsvond in het dorp, waarvoor Nederlandse verdachten werden aangehouden. Een buurtbewoner denkt dat de inzittenden van de auto die gisteren crashte uit de omgeving komen: "Volgens mij zijn het bekenden hier uit de buurt, dat gevoel heb ik". Since 7 July, all new cars in the EU must be equipped with an infrared camera designed to ensure that drivers are not distracted. The driver-assistance system, called ADDW (Advanced Driver Distraction Warning), monitors head position, gaze direction, and eye movements. In practical terms, this means: if you're driving at 20 to 50 km/h, just six seconds of looking away from the road can trigger a warning. At speeds above 50 km/h, the threshold drops to three and a half seconds. The system then starts beeping, flashing, or vibrating, much like the warning you get when you forget to fasten your seatbelt. Our colleagues in Poland have reported that the new feature is already being hotly debated there. For some, it is a valuable safety measure that could help prevent accidents. For others, it represents the first step toward increased surveillance in everyday life. However, there are clear data protection requirements that manufacturers must comply with when implementing the system.
