Adesoji served as the Ooni (king) of Ife in Nigeria from 1930 to 1980. He was a Yoruba traditional ruler Adesoji and numerous other African chiefs would pay visits to the US during the 1960’s in order to foster post colonial relations. This is likely from his 1968 trip to New York to meet with UN Secretary-General U Thant. That same year, he also participated in cultural events in Houston and South Carolina representing the Nigerian and Yoruba culture. He became a symbol of unity and leadership among the Yoruba people and would be remembered for his role in education as well as his ability to bridge the the gap between traditional authority and modern governance. He was able to secure a pathway to wealth for indigenes especially in the agricultural industry. Oba Aderemi also founded the Oduduwa College as well as the University of Ife. He was knighted as the Knight Commander of the order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) and joined the Western House of Chiefs in 1948. Eastman Kodak released Super 8 in 1965 as an upgrade to the existing Standard 8mm film. It would remain popular until the advent of VHS in the 1980’s. Much of the footage shows the Chief in the traditional African Kufi and Agbada (:03) among western dressed civilians. He greets and speaks with various attendees (:27). Press snap photographs (1:08). Close shots highlight facial expressions (1:30). The camera pans over close allies; the man at 1;42 may very well be Edwin Ogebe Ogbu, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations. Sinds de eerste editie van Pride dertig jaar geleden is er heel wat veranderd. Waar het toen juist specifiek geen protest, maar een feest moest zijn, ligt de focus nu meer op activisme. Journalisten Michiel Klaassen en Menno Sedee schreven het boek Tussen feest en protest: het verhaal van de Amsterdamse Pride over hoe het feest is gevormd en veranderd. "Bij de eerste editie stonden er al tienduizend mensen te kijken langs de gracht", vertelt auteur Michiel Klaassen. We staan bij de Eenhoornsluis, tussen de Haarlemmerdijk en de Haarlemmerstraat. "Want hier gebeurde het allemaal voor de eerste keer. De organisator van de Gay Pride – die was bedoeld als feest en als manier om Amsterdam als homo-uitgaansstad te promoten – stond voorop de politieboot die hier de brug onder voer. En dat was spannend, want zou er aandacht voor zijn? Zouden mensen het accepteren?" Het was het begin van de botenparade in de stad, nog altijd een van de populairste elementen van Pride. "Mensen die op de boten staan vertellen altijd dat het zo'n bijzonder moment is. Elke keer als je onder een brug vaart en er duizenden mensen staan de schreeuwen en te juichen. Als ware je Lady Gaga herself bent", lacht Klaassen. Ook voor hem was het meemaken van de botenparade een doorslaggevende ervaring. "Ik dacht, dit kan dus gewoon!" Een aantal jaar geleden lag Pride Amsterdam nog onder vuur. Het zou te veel een feest en ook te veel voor een bepaalde groep zijn. "Een deel van de regenbooggemeenschap zei 'wacht eens even, er valt niet alleen wat te vieren, maar er is genoeg om voor te vechten voor bepaalde delen van onze gemeenschap'. Die strijd, over wat voor evenement het moet zijn, die is niet nieuw." Protest bestond ook al tientallen jaren voor de eerste Pride. Al in 1977 was het Amstelveld het toneel van een grote manifestatie tegen homofobie, vertelt Klaassen. "Vanuit de vrouwenbeweging die dan heel actief is in Amsterdam wordt er een mars georganiseerd. Die mars is uiteindelijk uitgegroeid tot de roze zaterdag die nog steeds wordt gehouden." Maar inmiddels groeit de weerstand tegen de regenbooggemeenschap helaas weer. Juist daarom is het belangrijk, vindt Klaassen, dat de Pride zoveel mogelijk verschillende soorten mensen trekt. "Wat heel erg belangrijk is, is dat Pride altijd zal proberen om de brug te slaan naar de heteromaatschappij, zo te zeggen. Want je bestaat als minderheid toch altijd bij de gratie van de meerderheid." Nietsvermoedend liep Sabine vorige week donderdag op de Bloemgracht toen er een groot blok foam, waarschijnlijk van een bank, op haar hoofd viel. Ze brak haar nek en dacht even dat haar leven voorbij was. Ondanks politieonderzoek, is het nog onduidelijk waar dat foamblok nu precies vandaan kwam. Waarschijnlijk kwam het uit een woning op de derde etage. De politie zei vorige week uit te gaan van een ongeluk, maar Sabine wil dat degene die hier verantwoordelijk voor is, wordt gevonden. "Ik wil erkenning voor wat me is overkomen". "Ik voelde een keiharde krak in mijn nek en toen wist ik: dit is helemaal fout." Volgens Sabine schoten omstanders direct te hulp. Terwijl zij op de grond lag, probeerden mensen te achterhalen waar het voorwerp vandaan was gekomen. "Ik hoorde mensen zeggen: dat komt bij die buurman vandaan. En ik hoorde een vrouw zeggen: "hij doet niet open", vertelt ze. "Ze gingen aan dat schuim voelen en toen kwamen ze erachter dat het echt wel vijftien kilo woog. Misschien was het een deel van een bank." De gevolgen voor Sabine zijn groot. Ze brak haar bovenste twee nekwervels, liep een zware hersenschudding op en kan naar verwachting drie maanden niet werken. "Ik ben vierenhalf jaar geleden heel ernstig ziek geweest en er eigenlijk niet meer zou zijn. Daar ben ik beter van geworden, ik ben weer gaan werken en heb mijn leven opgepakt. En dan gebeurt er dit." Politie onderzoekt zaak verder De politie concludeerde na het eerste onderzoek dat er waarschijnlijk sprake was van een ongeluk. Daarbij speelde mee dat er geen getuigenverklaringen waren die opzet of nalatigheid konden aantonen. Nu Sabine aangifte heeft gedaan van poging tot doodslag, wordt de zaak opnieuw bekeken en volgt aanvullend onderzoek. Ook haar partner Coen sluit niet uit dat het om een ongeluk gaat, maar vindt dat er meer duidelijkheid moet komen over wat er precies is gebeurd. "Het kan absoluut een ongeluk zijn. Waarschijnlijk is het ook wel een ongeluk", zegt hij. "Alleen, maak er dan geen misdaad van door dit alles te verzwijgen." Oproep aan getuigen Sabine hoopt dat mensen die die dag iets hebben gezien zich alsnog melden. Volgens haar kan zelfs het kleinste detail van belang zijn voor het onderzoek. "Kom alsjeblieft naar buiten met je verhaal en ook als je denkt, ik houd niet van de politie.
