Kinderen uit verschillende stadsdelen strijden om een plek in de finale van de Cruyff Street League. In Weesp, Zuidoost en Nieuw-West worden vandaag de halve finales gespeeld, in andere stadsdelen vonden deze al eerder plaats.  Het straatvoetbaltoernooi wordt georganiseerd door de gemeente Amsterdam en de Johan Cruyff Foundation. AT5 neemt een kijkje bij de wedstrijden op het Nouriplein in Nieuw-West.   "Veel plezier hebben met de meiden, dat het gezellig is en gewoon leuk voetballen”, vertelt een speelster over de deelname aan het toernooi. Al is deze ontspannend houding niet bij iedereen het geval. “Nu kunnen we nog lachen, maar straks als we op het veld staan, dan is er wel concurrentie,” vertelt een andere deelneemster. Ook de organisatie geniet zichtbaar van de wedstrijden. “Ik word persoonlijk heel blij”, zegt Desmond Post van de Cruyff Foundation: “Ik moet altijd denken aan een uitspraak van Cruijff zelf: 'Salid y disfrutar' ga naar buiten en geniet. Ik denk dat kinderen hier naar buiten gaan en ook genieten, dus in die zin ben ik heel tevreden.” De organisatie is er heel blij mee dat er veel meiden meedoen met het straatvoetbaltoernooi. Hoewel vrouwenvoetbal de afgelopen jaren flink is gegroeid, wordt straatvoetbal volgens de organisatie nog vaak gezien als iets voor jongens.  “Je merkt dat pleintjes heel erg door jongens worden gedomineerd en dat voetbal onbewust nog steeds als een jongenssport wordt gezien”, zegt Dounia el Ghayyati Fares, coördinator bij El Mazouni coaching.“Maar als we activiteiten organiseren, merk je dat meiden het heel leuk vinden. Ik denk dat het stigma er een beetje af moet.” “Ze zeggen vaak: voetbal is voor jongens. Maar uiteindelijk zie je hoeveel meisjes er zijn en hoe gezellig het is. Een groot tekort aan crisispleegouders zorgt ervoor dat kinderen soms op grote afstand van de stad terechtkomen of onnodig veel moeten verhuizen. Jeugdhulporganisatie Levvel roept Amsterdammers (en inwoners van andere gemeenten) daarom op om zich aan te melden als pleegouder. Vanwege het tekort wordt er ook opnieuw een beroep gedaan op mensen die nu al crisispleegouder zijn. Clemens en Caroline uit Zuid vangen al 27 jaar pleegkinderen op en hebben nu drie pleegdochters van 10, 19 en 20 jaar oud in huis. Een maand geleden kregen ze de vraag of ze daarnaast een baby op wilden vangen. Baby in je armen "Het is leuk, het went natuurlijk ook weer heel erg snel, want je wordt 's middags gebeld en 's avonds heb je een baby in je armen", vertelt Clemens. Hij noemt het tekort schrijnend. "Ik denk ook dat het niet nodig is. Ik denk dat heel veel mensen eigenlijk niet weten dat ze er geschikt voor zijn en er gelukkig van worden." Iedereen die 21 jaar of ouder is kan crisispleegouder worden. Daarna wordt gekeken door Levvel gekeken hij of zij geschikt is. "Je krijgt begeleiding van ons en moet ook begeleiding willen aanvaarden en met ons willen gaan samenwerken en met andere hulpverleners. Het is belangrijk dat je ook oog hebt voor ouders. Dus dat je daar contact mee hebt." Clemens en Caroline hebben de afgelopen jaren gemerkt dat veel mensen daar tegenop zien, maar dat is volgens hen niet terecht. "Bij ons komt een moeder nu een paar keer per week met haar kindje knuffelen, flesjes geven", legt Caroline uit. "En dat moet je ook vinden. En dat vinden wij allebei heel leuk." Volgens Clemens geven de bezoeken van ouders juist rust bij de kinderen. Voor de deur van het huis van Michelle staat een behoorlijke rij met mensen die een pakketje komen ophalen. En die rij wordt de hele dag niet minder. DPD, GLS of UPS. Noem het maar op, of bezorgbedrijven leveren hun pakketjes af bij Michelle thuis. De benedenverdieping van de woning is volledig omgetoverd tot een pakketpunt. "Ik woon hierboven. Nou ja, wonen, ik val er in slaap", zo grapt Michelle. Het is namelijk op de dagen dat ze open is een drukte van jewelste. "Mensen halen hun pakketjes op en er komt van alles binnen dat je moet verwerken. Ik moet daardoor regelmatig een nacht slaap skippen en dan weten ze me zelfs te vinden als ik dicht ben." It is a transmission that has an infinite number of speeds while at the same time being more compact and lightweight than any conventional transmission. It has virtually no wear parts, it never shifts and it has bulletproof reliability. The number of moving parts on my model is almost the same as in any actual Toyota hybrid car and is dramatically lower than the number of moving parts inside any conventional transmission. This car has no shift forks, no clutches or clutch packs, no pulley, no belts, no chains, no sleeves, no synchros, no valve bodies, no torque converters. No nothing. It’s literally just a bunch of gears. The only catch is that this transmission can only be operated by a hybrid, and that’s because it needs two inputs, an internal combustion engine alone cannot run this. At the heart of the transmission, we have this which is a planetary gear set aka power split device. It’s called a planetary gear set because the central green gear is sort of like the sun, the red gears are like planets because they rotate around it and the outer blue part is called the ring gear. On this side we have the motor generator 1 and motor generator 2. Motor generator 1 is connected to the sun gear. Motor generator 2 is connected to the ring gear. Now, both MG1 and MG2 are three phase AC permanent magnet motors which means that they can act both as a motor, in which case they turn electrical energy into motion or torque and they can do this in both directions, OR they can act as generators in which case they turn motion into electricity; this too they can do in both directions of rotation. On the other side we have the internal combustion engine which is as you can see connected to the planet gears. So let’s start in EV only mode. In this mode there is only one thing happening and that is that MG2 is consuming electricity stored in the battery in order to turn the the wheels, via the ring gear, that’s it. The engine is doing nothing, 0 rpm turned off. The planets gears simply freewheel on their shafts without any rotation of the engine itself. Ok now let’s imagine we are merging onto the highway and the EV mode alone is no longer able to provide sufficient power to attain highway speeds. In that case the engine starts and joins the party which means that we are now in hybrid mode. The first question we must ask is how does the engine even start? Because all Toyota and other hybrid vehicles using this anatomy have no starter motor. The duty of starting the engine is handled by MG1, which being a big three-phase AC motor is an extremely robust and reliable engine starting solution. But it’s not just reliable, it can spin up the engine to any required RPM, which builds the required oil pressure and then the ECU just fires the spark plugs and injects the fuel to start combustion at that particular RPM. At the same time the anatomy of the planetary gearset means that engine torque doesn’t just abruptly jump in like in other hybrid systems which are basically just electrified conventional automatics. In an e-cvt the engine torque is smoothly blended into the drivetrain. You will never actually feel the engine come on, you will only hear it. There is no jolt or drivetrain shock of any kind. But here’s the real magic. As we said this is a CVT. So let’s imagine that what my hand is doing right now is something like 2500 rpm, or peak efficiency RPM for the engine. Wheel speed will keep increasing while engine rpm will remain the same. This is the beauty of a planetary gearset. By changing the speed and direction of MG1 we can continuously and infinitely vary the gear ratio to change the wheel speed while engine rpm remains perfectly constant. The only downside is a disconnection between engine rpm and vehicle speed which feels strange to most people, leading to a somehwat boring and indirect driving experience. So, it's not fun but it is extremely well-engineered. Liefhebbers en buurtbewoners van tweedehands boekwinkel Sterre de Zee in de Kinkerbuurt strijden voor het voortbestaan van de winkel. Nadat eigenaar Jan van Eijk afgelopen februari overleed, werd ook het huurcontract met Stadgenoot beëindigd. Een groep vrijwilligers wil de zaak graag overnemen, maar onder andere een driedubbele huurverhoging staat dat in de weg. Tussen hoge stapels tweedehands boeken en overvolle kasten is nauwelijks nog plek in boekhandel Sterre der Zee in de Kinkerbuurt. Plots is het voortbestaan van de winkel na 35 jaar onzeker. Het huurcontract met verhuurder Stadgenoot is beëindigd na het overlijden van eigenaar Jan van Eijk. De afspraken die met hem zijn gemaakt, bijvoorbeeld een huurprijs op antikraakbasis en een terugkeer van de winkel na een grondige renovatie deze zomer, zijn automatisch vervallen. Verdriedubbeling En dus is een groep vrijwilligers opgestaan die de zaak wil overnemen. Stadgenoot staat open voor een nieuw huurcontract met de groep, maar wel met nieuwe voorwaarden. De huur zou bijna verdriedubbelen, en ook zouden er culturele activiteiten moeten plaatsvinden in het pand. "Met jullie hulp gaan we zorgen dat het blijft", zegt vrijwilliger Harrie Lindelauff door een microfoon bij een actie die vanmiddag wordt gehouden. Er volgt hard applaus van liefhebbers en buurtbewoners van de winkel die vanmiddag zijn gekomen om de winkel te steunen. "Wij hebben voorgesteld om de huur van Jan te verdubbelen, maar Stadgenoot wil eigenlijk drie keer zoveel. Wij denken dat we dat net niet redden. Je verdient niet veel met tweedehands boeken, en dat is ook de bedoeling", vertelt Harrie in een kamer die vol met boeken staat. Een petitie om de winkel te redden is al ruim 700 keer ondertekend. "Heel erg jammer", vertelt een buurtbewoner die vaste klant is. "Alles van dit soort dingen die verloren gaan, die komen niet meer terug. Alles is commercieel geworden." "Dat zou betekenen dat dit soort plekken in Amsterdam niet kunnen bestaan. Aangezien het al de een-na-laatste van zijn soort is", voegt een vrouw toe, die net in de winkel is gaan werken. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The voices are by Henry Jacobs and Chuck Levy. The dialogue centers on a man who claims he has quit smoking but immediately contradicts himself by taking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and explaining away every relapse as a test of self-control. The humor comes from his denial: he insists smoking is no longer a habit while lighting cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and even admitting he recently drank martinis after supposedly giving up drinking too. George plays the straight man, gently questioning him while the man keeps rationalizing his behavior. Harry Styles verblijft sinds twee weken in Amsterdam voor zijn concertreeks in de Arena. Zijn fans weten inmiddels precies waar de Britse popster graag uithangt. In en rondom het Vondelpark zitten ze al dagenlang op de uitkijk. Fans die Harry Styles willen zien, weten dat ze het beste naar het Vondelpark kunnen gaan. De zanger verblijft hier in de buurt en is er regelmatig te vinden als hij gaat hardlopen, of als hij een wandeling maakt met zijn verloofde Zoë Kravitz. Dat wordt allemaal vastgelegd door fans die hem spotten en hun filmpjes vervolgens op TikTok of instagram zetten. Op fanaccounts zoals deze wordt alles bijgehouden. En ja, bijna al die foto's en filmpjes zijn in - of in de buurt van - het Vondelpark gemaakt. Op veel van die filmpjes is te zien dat Harry benaderd wordt door fans die om een foto of handtekening vragen of hem alleen even begroeten. En ook deze middag zijn er overal plukjes fans te vinden - herkenbaar aan tassen of T-shirts die bedrukt zijn met het logo van de Together-tour, waarvan tien concerten deze maand in de Arena plaatsvinden. Praatje maken HvA-student Collin knoopte zelfs even een gesprekje aan toen hij de zanger tegenkwam op de Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat. "Nadat hij ons groette, liep hij in eerste instantie door en bleven wij staan van: 'wat de fuck gebeurt hier allemaal?' Net toen we van plan waren om weer weg te gaan, kwam hij weer teruglopen." Waar hij het over heeft gehad? "Over de tour, over Amsterdam, dat soort dingen eigenlijk. En met Zoë heb ik het even over haar vader (zanger Lenny Kravitz, red.) gehad. Mijn ouders zijn groot fan van hem." Collin ontmoette Harry in de buurt van een koffiezaak in de Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat, waar hij vaker gespot is. Maar ik zie op TikTok echt dat mensen echt achter hem aan gaan rennen en vervolgens helemaal gaan freaken dat ze hem gezien hebben." Ga gewoon ergens in het Vondelpark zitten en als je hem voorbij ziet rennen, zeg dan netjes hoi. Het is een wereldster, maar het is ook gewoon Harry.
