Bewoners van de Borneokade konden hun ogen vanochtend niet geloven: op een deel van hun favoriete steiger zijn hekken geplaatst door de gemeente om overlast tegen te gaan. Dat gebeurde na een uitspraak van de Raad van State.  Op warme zomerdagen is de steiger een populaire verzamelplek voor Amsterdammers die verkoeling zoeken. Ook omwonenden genieten van de zwemplek voor de deur, maar een stel dat op een woonboot naast de steiger woont, is de overlast van zwemmers zat. Door de uitspraak van de Raad van State, is de gemeente genoodzaakt om in te grijpen. "Dat is de reden dat we als gemeente hebben besloten om de stijger in te korten met hekken om recht te doen aan de uitspraak van de hoogste bestuursrechter", zegt Jan-Bert Vroege, stadsdeelbestuurder van Oost. Geen extra handhavers Gewoon extra handhavers inzetten om de overlast tegen te gaan, is volgens hem geen optie. "Handhaven is erg lastig in het water, bovendien hebben we dan heel veel handhavers nodig. Ook zijn we nu bezig met een langetermijnoplossing: namelijk het bestemmingsplan aan te pakken, maar dat gaat nog een jaar duren", zegt hij. Dat bestemmingsplan houdt  nu in dat intensieve reacratie niet is toegestaan. Het lijkt erop dat de gemeente hoopt dat, intensief gebruik bij een nieuw bestemmingsplan wel mag.  Onbegrip De buurtbewoners snappen niks van de actie van de gemeente. "Dit is zo ongelooflijk dom", vertelt een zwemmer en buurtbewoner. "Ik vind het echt absurd. Het is maar een paar dagen in het jaar", zegt een andere buurtbewoner. Terwijl de hekken worden geplaatst, komen er steeds meer buurtbewoners kijken. "Iedereen heeft er plezier van, behalve een woonboot", zegt een teleurgestelde woonbootbewoner. Maar de woonbootbewoners die last hebben van de overlast zien dat anders. "We zijn moe van alles en angstig over de sfeer in de buurt. Maar we hebben ook schoon genoeg van de niet constructieve benadering van dit probleem door het bestuur én omwonenden, en buurtbewoners en iedereen die zich ermee bemoeid", zeggen zij tegen ons in een schriftelijke reactie.  Jarenlange strijd Zij voeren al jarenlang een juridische strijd tegen de gemeente en eisen maatregelen tegen de overlast. Zo spanden ze in 2019 met succes een kort geding aan omdat ze last hadden van geluidsoverlast. De rechter gaf ze toen gelijk en besloot dat er niet meer gezwommen mocht worden én dat er verbodsborden geplaatst zouden worden. Hierop ging de gemeente weer in hoger beroep en nu na jaren kwam het eindoordeel van de Raad van State, de hoogste rechter. Die zegt nu: de gemeente moet er alles aan doen om de overlast te verminderen. De gemeente stopt per volgende week met het aanbieden van de tilservice voor mensen met een lichamelijke beperking. Uit onderzoek van arbodienst ArboNed blijkt dat het werk te zwaar is voor mensen van het tilteam, waarop de gemeente besloten heeft de dienst stop te zetten. Gebruikers zijn daarover begin april geïnformeerd en hebben van de gemeente hulp gekregen, maar niet iedereen is daar blij mee. De tildienst bestaat al circa vijfentwintig jaar in de stad en maakt onderdeel uit van het Aanvullend Openbaar Vervoer (AOV). De dienst is bedoeld voor mensen met een handicap die niet zelfstandig hun trap op of af kunnen. In totaal maakten 68 Amsterdammers dit jaar nog gebruik van de service. Medewerkers van het tilteam, die werken voor vervoerder RMC, tillen gebruikers maximaal drie verdiepingen van de trap af in een tilstoel. De service was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als tijdelijke maatregel, wanneer mensen bijvoorbeeld in afwachting waren van een traplift of een vervangende woning. Uit onderzoek van ArboNed is gebleken dat het werk alleen niet veilig kan worden uitgevoerd. Reden genoeg voor wethouder Zorg Alexander Scholtes om de dienst per 1 juni te schrappen. "Het is een moeilijke, maar onvermijdbare beslissing geweest", benadrukt Scholtes. "Maar het kan niet meer veilig, ook niet met aanpassingen." De wethouder baseert zich daarbij zowel op klachten van medewerkers van het tilteam, als het onderzoek van ArboNed. Gebruikers twee maanden geleden geïnformeerd De tientallen gebruikers van de dienst in de stad zijn begin april per brief geïnformeerd over het beëindigen van de tilservice. Adviesbureau Reade heeft contact met de groep opgenomen om hen alternatieve hulp aan te bieden, legt Scholtens uit. Zo zijn sommige woningen toegankelijker gemaakt, kregen mensen een traplift of werd gekeken naar een andere woning. "Het eerlijke feit is ook dat dit voor de mensen een hele impactvolle beslissing kon zijn", benadrukt Scholtens. Dat gold ook voor de 78-jarige Dolly Vonk. Zij maakt sinds twee jaar gebruik van de tilservice sinds zij twee beenprothesen heeft en blind is door de gevolgen van diabetes. Drie keer per week helpen medewerkers van het tilteam haar van de drie treden van haar portiektrap op en af, zodat ze voor dialyse naar het ziekenhuis kan. In april kreeg van de gemeente te horen dat de medewerkers vanaf volgende week niet meer langskomen. Sinds die tijd zit ze met haar handen in het haar. Ze heeft zicht op een nieuwe woning met alle benodigde zorg elders in de stad, maar die is pas in twee maanden beschikbaar. "De gemeente heeft mij een logeerhuis aangeboden", vertelt Dolly in haar woning op de eerste verdieping aan de Parnassusweg. "Maar dan moet ik twee maanden uit mijn eigen omgeving weg en alles opnieuw organiseren om van daaruit weer naar mijn nieuwe huis te gaan. Nou, dan kun je mij oprapen." 'Wie kan mij helpen' De 78-jarige Dolly die al zo'n vijftig jaar in haar woning in Zuid woont en dagelijks hulp krijgt, is dan ook radeloos. "Ik heb structurele hulp nodig om de komende tijd nog de trap af te komen", benadrukt ze. Haar buurman en dagelijkse hulp kunnen volgens haar wel helpen, maar die zijn er niet de hele dag. "Ik zit al sinds begin april onder de stress", legt Dolly uit. "En die stress wordt alleen maar erger." Vooralsnog heeft ze geen idee hoe ze de tijd tot haar nieuwe woning moet overbruggen om van de trap af te komen. Since Paz took office in November 2025, the country has been placed under austerity measures that have led to a surge in poverty rates for much of Bolivia’s rural and working-class population. We speak to Kathryn Ledebur, director of the Andean Information Network in Cochabamba, Bolivia, about the monthlong protests. “Bolivia is a country where, for 19 years, Indigenous people and social movements enjoyed equal rights and political inclusion,” she explains. “There’s a huge break between what Paz promised and what he’s done in practice, which is select a white, upper-middle-class Cabinet with only two women, reject any genuine dialogue, reject interaction with the Bolivian social movements, or even have any empathy for people and what they’re going through day to day.” Ledebur also discusses the Paz administration’s growing ties with the Trump administration as the U.S. seeks to expand its so-called war on drugs throughout Latin America. Stumo died aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in March 2019, just months after another 737 MAX jet, a recently introduced model at the time, crashed in Indonesia. “They knew that there was a malfunction with the plane. The plane crashed in Indonesia, and then somebody inside the company decided to keep flying the plane and did not fix whatever it is that was wrong,” says Stumo’s mother, Nadia Milleron. This sort of detective work is like CSI for the ocean and it lets them identify the exact animals that once passed through an environment, giving us a better picture of ocean ecosystems! New Jersey Congressmember Analilia Mejia recently toured the facility and spoke to people who described being arrested and detained after attending routine ICE check-ins, being held for months in appalling conditions even after signing voluntary deportation orders, and being hospitalized after they were beaten and pepper-sprayed by armed ICE agents. “What we need to understand is that this is a for-profit model, and they are failing human beings,” she says. “The reality is that this is a rogue administration that has handed undue power to agencies, to ICE agents and to entities like GEO Group [that] are now acting with impunity.” Meanwhile, says Li Adorno, a community organizer with the immigrant rights group Movimiento Cosecha, protests outside the facility in solidarity with the strike have grown increasingly contentious. Local investigative journalist Bob Hennelly explains that the Trump administration’s targeting of Newark for immigration enforcement has escalated since federal agents arrested and charged Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Congressmember LaMonica McIver with trespassing after inviting them into Delaney Hall last May. De nieuwe snackautomaten bij tramhaltes op IJburg zijn niet bij iedereen geliefd. Een van de bewoners daar is een petitie gestart en die is al ruim 460 keer ondertekend. Bovendien geeft het stadsbestuur aan de snackautomaten 'onwenselijk' te vinden. De automaten, waar naast chocoladerepen ook blikjes energiedrank en flesjes water in zitten, staan er sinds een aantal weken. "De automaat stimuleert ongezonde keuzes, juist op een plek waar dagelijks veel kinderen en jongeren langskomen", staat er in de petitie. Die gaat over de automaat bij halte Steigereiland. Over de automaat bij de halte Vennepluimstraat staat ook een petitie online, al is die veel minder vaak ondertekend. "Dan sta je bij een halte en ga je drinken of chips of chocola halen", zegt een tegenstander van de automaat. "Nee, onzin. Van mij mag die meteen weg, hoor." Toch zijn er ook veel IJburgers die de petitie nergens voor nodig vinden. "Ik heb gelezen dat ze de automaat weg willen hebben, maar laat hem maar staan. Want als je wat ongezonds wil, dan kies je daar zelf voor." Partij voor de Dieren In februari vroeg de Partij voor de Dieren vroeg in februari al om opheldering over een snackautomaat in Buitenveldert. De partij wees er daarbij op dat de ov-kaartautomaten juist verdwenen zijn. Deze week hebben wethouders Melanie van der Horst en Alexander Scholtes de vragen beantwoord. "Snackautomaten bij tramhaltes verleiden bewoners en bezoekers tot ongezonde keuzes" Melanie van der Horst en Alexander Scholtes - wethouders Beide wethouders zien geen verband met het verdwijnen van de ov-kaartautomaten, maar ze zeggen de zorgen van de Partij voor de Dieren wel te delen. "De beschikbaarheid van ongezonde voeding in de openbare ruimte draagt bij aan ongezonde eetgewoonten. Snackautomaten bij tramhaltes zijn laagdrempelig en verleiden bewoners en bezoekers tot ongezonde keuzes." Ze gaan daarom in gesprek met het GVB. Hittestress beperken Een woordvoerder van het GVB zegt tegen AT5 dat de automaten het reiscomfort moeten vergroten. "En in onze concessie-eisen staat ook iets over klimaatadaptatie. We moeten kijken hoe we de hittestress kunnen beperken en daarmee het reiscomfort. Niet alleen voor onze reizigers, maar ook voor het ons personeel. Een van de manieren waarop is met gekoelde dranken in een automaat." De woordvoerder benadrukt dat de komst van de automaten vooraf met opdrachtgever Vervoerregio is afgestemd. Vooralsnog wordt de inhoud van de snackautomaten niet aangepast, maar ze zegt dat het GVB wel in gesprek blijft met zowel de gemeente als buurtbewoners.
