Op de binnenplaats van het Bushuis aan de Kloveniersburgwal is gisteren een bijenkolonie neergestreken. Het pand wordt gebruikt door de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). Docent Europese Studies Niels ten Oever zag de bijen recht tegenover zijn werkkamer landen. "Te gek. Dat geloof je toch niet?" Docent Niels Ten Oever zat gisteren op zijn werkkamer toen hij opeens een hoop kabaal hoorde. "Ik  hoor gezoem, en ik zie aan de overkant een hele zwerm bijen landen. Fantastisch." De bijen kozen een plekje boven een raam op de 2e verdieping. Het binnenplein grenst aan het Oost-Indisch Huis en het Bushuis, allebei in gebruik door de UvA. "Het is nu echt een 'Buzzzhuis'," grapt docent Europese Studies Krisztina Lajosi. "Ik vind het geweldig, zoiets heb ik nog nooit gezien. Ik vind het prachtig, zo midden in de stad." Wat de bijen komen doen durft Ten Oever niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Maar een idee heeft hij wel. "Ik denk dat deze zwerm zich aan het voortplanten is, en ze zijn op zoek naar een nieuwe plek. En ze hebben deze plek uitgezocht." En dat ze juist dit gebouw hebben uitgezocht kan Ten Oever wel waarderen. "Bijen zijn in heel veel culturen een symbool van wijsheid. Als die dan hier op de Universiteit landen, is dat toch echt een cadeautje." Bijenkolonie en de VOC Maar lang voordat deze plek een Universiteit was, huisde hier het administratieve hoofdkantoor van de Amsterdamse kamer van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC). Henry Ford didn’t just improve car manufacturing - he broke it into pieces. By reorganising the production of individual components into streamlined mini assembly lines, Ford slashed total build time from around 12 hours down to just 90 minutes. But there was still a bottleneck: final assembly. Cars were still being built at stationary workbenches, slowing everything down. The solution was the final moving assembly line which was fed by all those smaller production lines, where each completed part was mounted onto a moving chassis. The result was staggering: a car could now roll off the factory floor every 40 seconds, bringing motoring to the masses.

While the concept of molecules have long since been understood; the first molecule had not been seen by the human eye until 2009 through IBM’s innovative work (:37). Sinds een week woont hij in Loosdrecht in de noodopvanglocatie waar de afgelopen weken meerdere gewelddadige protesten waren. "Toen ik aankwam was ik bang. Maar inmiddels ben ik erachter dat er meer mensen zijn die ons welkom heten, dan mensen die protesteren. Kijk maar om je heen. Vandaag noem ik peace-day", lacht hij. En dat is volgens de organisatie precies het doel van deze avond. "Je ziet in het nieuws heel vaak dat er mensen op de barricade staan die zeggen dat er geen azc's mogen komen en dat de grenzen dicht moeten. Maar ik denk dat de mensen die wel gastvrij zijn verwelkomend zijn in de meerderheid zijn. And most of us think this profound inequality should be reduced. But some economists argue it is unknown whether striving for equality delivers better lives. In forty years China has lifted 770 million people out of poverty, while at the same time, according to the IMF becoming "one of the most unequal countries in the world". It is claimed that reducing inequality is the wrong goal, and eradicating absolute poverty, increasing social mobility or raising happiness levels, are better alternatives. In addition, a University College London study suggested that a focus on inequality increases feelings of unhappiness, envy and even raises levels of social violence. Should we conclude that focusing on reducing inequalities of wealth is a mistaken project? Should we focus instead on alternative goals such as social mobility? Or is a reduction in income and wealth inequality, beneficial to social cohesion and necessary if we wish to live in a just and fair society? #economics #politics #costofliving #redistribution Ingrid Robeyns is a philosopher and economist best known for developing limitarianism, the case for placing ethical limits on personal wealth. Jean Carroll, who successfully sued Donald Trump twice, for sexual abuse and defamation. In 2019, Carroll published a memoir describing an encounter in the 1990s when she says Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store. When Trump denied the account, Carroll sued him and won $5 million in damages, with a unanimous New York jury finding Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. After Trump made disparaging remarks about Carroll, she sued him again and won a second defamation judgment for over $83 million. (She has yet to collect any money pending appeals by Trump.) The group's investigation outlines how, since 2024, the Abu Dhabi-based security company Global Security Services Group hired hundreds of Colombian private military contractors, who were then deployed to Sudan to fight alongside the Rapid Support Forces. Human Rights Watch found evidence that the private military contractors were in El Fasher in October 2025, when the RSF seized the key city and committed widespread massacres and rape. The report adds to evidence of the UAE's involvement in the war in Sudan, despite the government's repeated denials.
