Op verschillende plekken in Amsterdam vieren moslims vandaag het Offerfeest. Dat is bij veel mensen bekend vanwege het slachten van schapen, maar het draait voor veel moslims vooral om het samenzijn van familie. Zo ook in Nieuw-West, waar we te gast waren bij een maaltijd die meerdere Turkse families georganiseerd hadden. Deze families komen oorspronkelijk uit hetzelfde dorp in Turkije. De eerste generatie mannen kwam eind jaren 60 gezamenlijk naar Nederland. Later volgden vrouwen en kinderen en inmiddels is de groep gegroeid naar zo'n 50 man. Normaal gesproken komen families bij elkaar thuis tijdens het Offerfeest, maar vanwege de grootte van deze groep wordt er al jaren een zaal van de Turkse moskee aan de Johannes Poststraat afgehuurd. Daar zijn de tafels al aan het einde van de ochtend gevuld met allerlei vleeswaren. Van oorsprong draait het feest ook om het slachten van dieren, maar voor veel moslims gaat het om meer dan dat. Het draait ook om opoffering, dankbaarheid en reflectie. Het Offerfeest valt op de 10e dag van de islamitische maand Dhu al-Hijjah, na de jaarlijkse bedevaart naar Mekka (Hadj). Het duurt drie tot vier dagen, afhankelijk van het land en de lokale kalender. In 2026 begint het feest officieel op dinsdagavond 26 mei en loopt tot vrijdag 29 mei. Het Offerfeest herdenkt het verhaal van profeet Ibrahim (Abraham). Volgens de Koran werd hij door God gevraagd zijn zoon Ismaël te offeren als teken van trouw en gehoorzaamheid. Op het laatste moment greep God in en werd een ram in plaats van zijn zoon geofferd, wat het symbool van het feest vormt. Het feest benadrukt vertrouwen, toewijding aan God en bereidheid tot opoffering. Hier is een lam slachten niet in de orde. "Dat heb ik wel een keer in Turkije gezien, maar ik bekijk dat liever niet", zegt een vrouw, "Dat laat ik aan andere mensen over." Het offerfeest gaat voornamelijk over delen met elkaar, dus ook aan mensen die het minder hebben. Net als veel andere families wordt hier een schaap gedoneerd aan een familie in het buitenland. Delen Dat delen gebeurt ook in de vorm van zakgeld geven aan de kinderen. Aan het einde van de bijeenkomst begroet iedereen elkaar nog één keer voordat ze vertrekken. De kinderen krijgen daarbij geld van de volwassenen. Het is een terugkerend thema: wanneer de temperatuur oploopt, lijkt ook de hoeveelheid afval op straat en in de parken toe te nemen. Zo ook bij het Marineterrein, waar heel veel mensen verkoeling zoeken aan het water, maar daar dan ook heel veel troep achterlaten. Voor de zwemmers die vanmorgen vroeg al op pad waren naar een verkoelende duik, was het slalommen naar het water. Er lag nog veel afval op het Marineterrein, waar het gisteren hartstikke druk was. "Het viel me op dat er best wel veel troep lag op de grond", beschrijft een zwemmer. Al snel is het eerste grasveld afvalvrij, de schoonmakers vullen tientallen vuilniszakken. De terreinbeheerder, Pieter van Dijk, complimenteert ze met hun harde werk. Achter een schuifdeur aan de rand van het veld, ligt de opbrengst. "Dit is de verzameling van én wat uit de bakken komt én wat op het terrein ligt", aldus Van Dijk. "Gelukkig ligt het nu op de plek waar het moet zijn." Glas Overigens was hij vanmorgen niet verrast, want al drie jaar is hij beheerder op het terrein en na zonnige dagen weet hij dat er veel afval achterblijft. Een ergernis, maar hij steekt liever de handen uit de mouwen. Verspilde energie om je er druk over te maken, vindt hij. Al is er wel een punt van zorg. "Ik denk dat iedereen lekker op zijn blote voetjes wil kunnen lopen zonder dat er een stuk glas in je voet zit", legt hij uit. "We merken hier vooral: glasafval is hier echt buitensporig veel. Dat is eigenlijk heel naar." De bezoekers van het terrein die vandaag voor verkoeling een duik komen nemen, begrijpen niets van het asociale gedrag van de bezoekers van een dag eerder. "Ik hoop dat mensen het gewoon schoon houden, zodat iedereen hier gebruik van kan maken", vertelt een man. Een groep vriendinnen is ook kritisch. "Neem mee wat je hebt gebracht. Of zeg er wat van, maar ja, ik denk dat heel veel mensen daar een soort van bang voor zijn." En of ze zelf ooit eens wat hebben achtergelaten? "Vast wel. Maar niet met opzet ofzo. ‘In februari 2022 ging ik voor het eerst naar Oekraïne. Na de Russische invasie keerde ik elf keer terug en bracht er meer dan anderhalf jaar door. Ondertussen zag ik thuis in Amsterdam de oorlog steeds meer uit het nieuws verdwijnen, en dat raakte me. Want nog altijd maakt de oorlog dagelijks zo’n duizend slachtoffers in het land. ‘De wreedheid van Poetins oorlog in Oekraïne is moeilijk te bevatten. Families worden verscheurd door Russische bommen en raketten. Een hele generatie jonge mannen aan het front raakt fysiek en mentaal volledig verminkt. Russische soldaten worden de dood in gestuurd, verleid door propaganda en de belofte van geld. ‘Burgers, soldaten, ouderen, kinderen – in Oekraïne leeft iedereen permanent op de rand van leven en dood, maar hoe kan het dat die werkelijkheid in Europa en de VS steeds verder uit beeld raakt? Vorige winter besloot ik samen met mijn vriend en veldproducent Andrii Zabolotnyi, in een ijskoud en donker Kyiv, dat dat onze missie zou worden: de dagelijkse realiteit van de oorlog weer zichtbaar maken. ‘We hadden toen drie jaar lang gewerkt aan mijn project Iron People, een serie over de oorlog door de ogen van Oekraïense spoorwegwerkers. Met de ervaring die we daarbij hadden opgedaan, besloten we een jaar lang door het land te reizen om de dagelijkse cost of war in beeld te brengen. Is European weather becoming too hot to handle? 🥵 🌡️ It’s only May but already, the continent is sizzling under an early heatwave. From Czechia to the UK, several countries have issued heat warnings as temperatures are soaring more than 10°C above seasonal averages. 🏭 And well, you guessed it, climate change is largely to blame. Scientists have long been warning that a hotter atmosphere turbocharged by human activities is leading to earlier, more frequent and intense heatwaves (as well as other extreme weather events). 💥 With 30°C in Utrecht, nearly 35°C in London and even 36°C in Nantes in the west of France, several cities even broke absolute records for May temperatures. 🇪🇺 According to a study, climate change is directly responsible for over half of heat-related deaths in the EU – more than 38 000 in 2022. Another one, analysing excess mortality for 2024, points out that summer heat kills three times more people than car crashes and 16 times more than murders. 🛡️ To protect its population and notably vulnerable workers, Italy’s Lazio region, which includes Rome, has for instance restricted outdoor work “with prolonged exposure to the sun” (farming, construction, delivery…) between 12:30 and 4pm. 👉 What about you, how are you faring with the heat? Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and Metropolitan Police Department officer Daniel Hodges are bringing the lawsuit because the fund could be used to compensate the Capitol rioters who attacked them and their colleagues. Both officers say they have faced continuous credible threats since that day. "This slush fund is going to be used to pay the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers," says Brendan Ballou, CEO of the Public Integrity Project, who is representing officers Dunn and Hodges. "It is going to give a presidential endorsement to these people, saying that not only … will they be put beyond the reach of the law, but they will actually be financially rewarded for doing so." Volgepropte afvalcontainers, stapels kartonnen dozen met rottend fruit en rondslingerend plastic. Niet alle ondernemers in winkelstraten in Oost voeren hun bedrijfsafval netjes af. Vaak gebruiken ze de ondergrondse vuilcontainers die juist bedoeld zijn voor huisvuil. Het is een grote ergernis van stadsdeelbestuurder Jan-Bert Vroege, die er keurig nette winkelstraten van wil maken. Maar hoe krijg je de ondernemers zo ver? Ondernemers in de Javastraat die meer dan 9 vuilniszakken afval per week hebben, moeten hun verpakkingsmaterialen en overschotten af laten voeren door een commercieel afvalbedrijf. Maar niet iedereen doet dat. Met als gevolg straten vol restafval en overvolle containers, die eigenlijk bedoeld zijn voor huisvuil. "Vooral de marktjes, ondernemers in groente en fruit", zegt een bewoner, "hebben veel bedrijfsafval en dat moeten ze weghalen." Er zijn mensen die dat niet zo erg vinden. "Het is een gezellige straat, ik erger me er niet echt aan." Maar een andere voorbijganger is duidelijk: "Als ik hier zou wonen, wil ik dat niet voor m'n deur hebben." Strenger handhaven Maar Jan-Bert Vroege, bestuurder van stadsdeel Oost, ergert zich bont en blauw. "Het is niet echt aantrekkelijk om hier boodschappen te doen met al dat afval op straat. We gaan strenger handhaven, want te lang hebben we de boel de boel gelaten." Daarom is de gemeente bij alle ondernemers langs geweest om te kijken of ze een commercieel bedrijf hebben ingeschakeld voor hun bedrijfsafval. Zo niet, dan krijgen ze een aanschrijving om dat alsnog te doen. Vroege: "We geven ze een paar weken de tijd om het te regelen. Dan komen we inspecteren." Het stadsdeel krijgt dagelijks meldingen binnen van afval dat verkeerd wordt aangeboden. "Maar mensen bellen ook vaak niet, omdat ze er gewend aan raken. Dat willen wij niet. We moeten een schone Javastraat hebben, en dat geldt ook voor andere winkelstraten in Oost, zoals de Eerste van Swindenstraat en de Eerste Oosterparkstraat." Eén partij voor bedrijfsafval Kelly Kruishaar, voorzitter van de ondernemersvereniging van de Javastraat, ziet het probleem ook, maar pleit voor een andere oplossing. Juist de gemeente die als enige partij, wel tegen betaling, al het bedrijfsaval ophaalt. "Dan verdient de gemeente er ook aan, en het is beter voor het milieu", zegt Kruishaar. "Nu zijn het wel een stuk of vijftien verschillende bedrijven. Het lijkt me de slimste oplossing en we kunnen ons daar allemaal bij aansluiten." Extra controles Maar voorlopig vaart de gemeente haar eigen koers. Over een paar weken moeten bedrijven met veel afval een contract hebben met een commercieel afvalbedrijf. Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Around 300 immigrants detained at the Delaney Hall ICE jail in Newark, New Jersey, have been on a hunger and work strike since Friday to protest inhumane conditions and due process violations. Delaney Hall is operated by the private prison company GEO Group. Since the hunger strike was launched, immigration advocates have been staging a solidarity protest outside Delaney Hall to promote the detainees' demands for freedom. Protesters and ICE agents have clashed outside the jail, and three people have been arrested. Tensions escalated on Sunday when ICE removed a hunger strike organizer, Martín Soto, prompting protesters outside the ICE jail to block a van being used to transport him. Masked ICE agents responded by firing tear gas and pushing people to the ground. Soto was ultimately transferred to an ICE jail in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is now facing criminal charges for allegedly assaulting an ICE officer. We speak to Gabriela Soto, Martín Soto's wife, and Li Adorno, an organizer with the group Movimiento Cosecha. Both have helped lead the protest outside Delaney Hall. Gabriela Soto says that she started the protest in conjunction with the detainees' strike so that the media could see how ICE is "destroying families and separating them." Soto says that when she was blocked from seeing her husband during visiting hours on Saturday, a guard asked her why she was "spreading lies" and talking to the press. "He said, 'Why are you telling people that we're feeding them worms? Why are you telling people that we don't give them medical care?' I said, 'Because it's true.'"
