Ingredients Element one: Chicken 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs 1 orange, zest and juice 2 tbsp juice from canned adobo ½ tbsp ground cumin 1 tsp salt 1 Tbsp neutral oil Element two: salsa roja 2 roma tomatoes ¼ white onion 4 cloves garlic, skin on ½ tin chipotle in adobo Element three: pico de gallo 2 roma tomatoes ¼ red onion 1 green jalapeno ¼ bunch Coriander Pinch of salt 1 tbsp olive oil 1 lime, juice Element four: Serving 12 Soft, wheat flour tortillas Step 1: Marinate chicken Preheat a charcoal grill for 15 minutes before cooking. Place the chicken thighs into a large bowl, along with the zest and juice of an orange, adobo juice, cumin, salt and oil. Mix well and set aside while you prepare the other components. Step 2: Make the salsa roja and pico de gallo Slice the tomatoes in half. Place the tomato, onion and garlic on a rack over the preheated coals for 10-15 minutes or until well charred. While they’re cooking, make the pico de gallo. Finely dice the tomato, onion and green chilli. Leave the seeds in the chilli if you like it hot, or remove them for a more mild flavour. Mix together well with some finely sliced coriander, salt, olive oil and lime juice. Set aside. Once the garlic has charred, remove it from the skin. To a blender, add the charred onion, tomato, chipotle in adobo, peeled garlic and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning then set aside. Step 3: Cook chicken and toast tortillas Place the thighs on the rack directly above the hot coals for 5-6 minutes, before turning over to grill on the other side until charred and cooked through (65°C) in the centre. Remove the thighs from the grill and rest on a tray fitted with a wire rack. In the meantime grill the tortillas over the charcoal for 20-30 seconds per side to warm through. Wrap the tortillas in a clean tea towel. Once rested, slice the thighs against the grain and serve with the pico de gallo, salsa and warm tortillas.

If you've ever bought a cell phone, an appliance, or any other high-value item, you've likely felt pressured to buy an extended warranty for peace of mind. However, these protection plans rarely pay off for most people. In this episode, Wirecutter senior writer Liam McCabe explains why extended warranties are generally a “terrible investment,” how incredibly profitable they are for warranty companies, and the very few instances when paying for extra coverage might actually be worth it. This episode covers:  • The difference between manufacturer and extended warranties: A manufacturer's warranty is automatically included for free as a promise against defects (usually for 30 days to a year). An extended warranty, on the other hand, is an optional, extra-cost protection plan that you have to actively choose to buy. • Why you probably won’t use an extended warranty: People tend to overestimate the failure rate of most products. And the likelihood that the product will fail during the extended warranty period is quite low. • How extended warranties mainly benefit warranty companies: Extended warranty companies generally only pay out around 25% of what they take in, keeping 75% of the money. By comparison, health insurance companies generally pay out 80% to 90% to policy holders. • When it’s worth getting an extended warranty anyway: Sometimes it’s worth getting one of these warranties, even if you’ll likely lose money. Of course, there is a disagreement on that vowel, one with an "e" and the other with an "i". Also, we have for some decades now rendered the three Arabic vowels as "a", "i", and "u", so there should have been no "e" in the first place. Recently historians and linguists have rectified the name of the region by writing "Khwarazm" (as the Wikipedia page reflects), so it is only reasonable to write "al-Khwārazmī" as well. The medieval person who transliterated our protagonist's name into Latin as "Algorizmi" did not know what name he was reading, since he substituted the letter khāʾ (our "kh") with a jīm ("g"). The two differ only by a dot, as you see here: ج خ [Ben's note: Prof. Oaks sent images of the characters as they would have appeared in the 9th century. These are the standalone characters that show the same dots] It is very common for copyists to leave off the dots, and sometimes a dot is misplaced. So our transliterator likely did not know that that letter should be a khāʾ. That means that he did not know what the name was, and so could not have known what the one short vowel should be, or even if there was a vowel there at all. The same confusion about the same letter is at play in whether we should write "al-Karajī" or "al-Karkhī". Some manuscripts have the dot above, and others have the dot below, and the vocalization changes from one reading to the other. So the first "i" in "Algorizmi" cannot be declared to be correct. Perhaps more important, short vowels were not all fixed in stone across the entire Islamicate world. For example, in a 1305 commentary al-Hawārī, working in (what is now) Morocco, related that the word jidhr ("root") is spoken with either an "i" or an "a", and that his teacher Ibn al-Bannāʾ thought that the "a" was more appropriate. Pronunciations were---and remain---fluid, and how we transliterate words and names from centuries ago often depends on the educated guesses of modern scholars. So if people want, they can go ahead and continue to write "al-Khwārizmī". The film captures personal views of the historic event including footage of French General Henri Gourfas. It begins with candid images of the group traveling aboard the liner RMS Mauretania for France changing over to Paris and the armistice celebrations. Veterans march down the Champs-Elysees for the Arc de Triomphe and a ceremony around the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb is home to an unidentified French soldier killed during WWI. It was installed in 1920 simultaneously as a British unknown soldier was buried with honors in Westminster Abbey. These are symbolic of those lost during WWI. Veterans, including the American 55th infantry regiment, perform drills and marches. The armistice was signed in a railroad car in the Compiegne Forest ceasing fighting on all fronts between France and Germany. The group tours various French small towns including Saint-Mesmes for the Chateau Nantouillet, Artonges, La Fosse, Maurepas, Courthiezy, and Charly. The middle includes evening party equipped with French booze, horns and 1920’s style. It is a blend of history and friendship. Intimate shots capture personalities of group members including tender and comical moments throughout. The trip began in May 1928 (:29). Footage sweeps the interior of RMS Mauretania. A man in a newsboy hat is the focus, a woman lounges on wooden chairs (:37). Two males are filmed relaying personality through facial expression (:49, 1:05). Wide shots show the exterior of the liner (2:04). Veterans march down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees (2:40) for armed drills (3:02). Flower wreaths are laid over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (3:45). Footage shows the Place de la Concorde in the background (3:56). A small battalion flag notes the 55th Infantry Regiment, a regular infantry of the US army formed in 1917 from the 17th infantry (4:16). The snare and brass portion of a marching band follows (4:56). Henri Gourard and military officials shake hands (5:49). He was a highly decorated WW1 French Commander of the French 4th Army in the Champagne region. His strategic planning earned him respect and a permanent mark in history. Close images capture stern expression (6:27). They tour small French communes including Saint-Mesmes (6:38) in the Seine-et-Marne department of northern France (6:44) for the Chateau Nantouillet (7:39). This is a ruined 16th century chateau considered a strong example of French renaissance style. Few portions of the structure, opened in 1250, remain. Antoine Duprat, French Cardinal and politician built the chateau taking residency there until his death in 1535. Panoramic shots highlight brick walls, mullioned windows (7:48), and a damaged tower (9:25). The group joins friends for a large party (9:30). Members smoke tobacco (9:52) in loose suits, women wear long tunic dresses and short haircuts. A woman with pearls entertains friends with dance (12:23). Another plays the accordion (12:35). The woman with pearls plays in large male shoes (12:49). Tobacco smoke, top hats and brass horns (13:09) fill the scene. They tour a canal near chateaus (13:59) and a bridge (14:01). In Artonges (14:26), footage captures a courtyard fountain and an advertisement for the popular wine Bryyh (15:13). Created in 1866, trademarked in 1873, it continued to sell in the 20th century. They play games on the grass (15:56) and around a tunnel (16:15). The group tours La Fosse (17:11), Maurepas (17:59) and Bois de Rougis (18:52) from St. Agnan, an area rich with WWI history. It was the site the Germans launched their final offensive from across the Marne River. Courthiezy, France (20:51) and the valley of the Marne (21:49) viewed from a French artillery outpost (21:56). Marne river appears (22:06). A traveler looks at bullets from a local (22:51). A hill north of Charly France concludes the film (23:09). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. Het is een terugkerend thema: wanneer de temperatuur oploopt, lijkt ook de hoeveelheid afval op straat en in de parken toe te nemen. Zo ook bij het Marineterrein, waar heel veel mensen verkoeling zoeken aan het water, maar daar dan ook heel veel troep achterlaten. Voor de zwemmers die vanmorgen vroeg al op pad waren naar een verkoelende duik, was het slalommen naar het water. Er lag nog veel afval op het Marineterrein, waar het gisteren hartstikke druk was. "Het viel me op dat er best wel veel troep lag op de grond", beschrijft een zwemmer.  Al snel is het eerste grasveld afvalvrij, de schoonmakers vullen tientallen vuilniszakken. De terreinbeheerder, Pieter van Dijk, complimenteert ze met hun harde werk. Achter een schuifdeur aan de rand van het veld, ligt de opbrengst. "Dit is de verzameling van én wat uit de bakken komt én wat op het terrein ligt", aldus Van Dijk. "Gelukkig ligt het nu op de plek waar het moet zijn." Glas Overigens was hij vanmorgen niet verrast, want al drie jaar is hij beheerder op het terrein en na zonnige dagen weet hij dat er veel afval achterblijft. Een ergernis, maar hij steekt liever de handen uit de mouwen. Verspilde energie om je er druk over te maken, vindt hij. Al is er wel een punt van zorg. "Ik denk dat iedereen lekker op zijn blote voetjes wil kunnen lopen zonder dat er een stuk glas in je voet zit", legt hij uit. "We merken hier vooral: glasafval is hier echt buitensporig veel. Dat is eigenlijk heel naar." De bezoekers van het terrein die vandaag voor verkoeling een duik komen nemen, begrijpen niets van het asociale gedrag van de bezoekers van een dag eerder. "Ik hoop dat mensen het gewoon schoon houden, zodat iedereen hier gebruik van kan maken", vertelt een man. Een groep vriendinnen is ook kritisch. "Neem mee wat je hebt gebracht. Of zeg er wat van, maar ja, ik denk dat heel veel mensen daar een soort van bang voor zijn." En of ze zelf ooit eens wat hebben achtergelaten? "Vast wel. Maar niet met opzet ofzo. Als het bijvoorbeeld wegwaait en je bent aan het zwemmen, ja, dan heb je het niet door en dat kan gebeuren." Voor de terreinbeheerder Pieter van Dijk is het herhalen van een eigenlijk al achterhaalde boodschap de enige optie. "Gooi dat glas in de glasbak, gooi je restafval in de restafvalbak. Is het vol? Neem het mee naar huis en gooi het onderweg in een bak waar wel ruimte is. Een keiharde knal, vlammen en heel veel rook. Een tuinhuisje in volkstuinpark Nieuwe Levenskracht in de Watergraafsmeer brandde gisteravond volledig af. De eigenaar van het huisje was op dat moment thuis. Ze raakte gewond en moest met brandwonden naar het ziekenhuis. Op het tuinpark kwamen we vandaag haar broer tegen. "Ik was thuis toen ik werd gebeld en er werd gezegd: het huisje van je zus staat in brand", vertelt Harrie Driel. "Het eerste wat ik vroeg, was: hoe is het met m'n zus?" Harrie komt snel naar het tuinpark en hoewel hij eerst nog wordt tegengehouden door de politie, kan Harrie daarna naar zijn zus toe. Ze blijkt brandwonden te hebben opgelopen. "Gisteravond lag ze in het ziekenhuis vanwege de pijn en nu is ze er weer. Dit keer voor haar wonden." Harde knal De brand waarbij de zus van Harrie gewond raakte, ontstond gisteravond rond 18.50 uur. Bewoners van het park hoorden dat er iets mis was. "Wij zaten in de tuin en er was een enorme knal. Echt niet normaal", zegt Fred Kuiper, bewoner van het tuinpark. "Toen hebben we meteen 112 gebeld, want we wisten gelijk dat er iets aan de hand was." Fred en Harrie vermoeden dat die knal door een gasfles komt. "Kijk, er liggen overal stukken van de ijskast. De boel is echt ontploft door die gasfles." De brandweer kan dat niet bevestigen. Het is ook nog niet duidelijk wat de oorzaak was van de brand. Het vuur was uiteindelijk binnen een half uur geblust. Het enige wat op dit moment belangrijk is voor Harrie, is of het goed gaat met zijn zus. "Zolang dat maar zo is. Het huisje is niet belangrijk. Nashville reporter Steven Hale attended the execution and describes his and fellow witnesses' confusion as they heard the sounds of what Carruthers's attorneys are calling "torture." Per Tennessee's lethal injection protocol, witnesses can only see inside the execution chamber once the injection process has begun. Carruthers, who has long struggled with mental health issues and represented himself in his trial, was convicted of triple homicide in 1996. He has always maintained his innocence, but courts have thus far blocked his requests for modern-day crime scene analysis that could lead to his exoneration.
